This is such an amazing event! There's a surprising amount of street parking available within walking distance to the hill. I love the addition of food trucks to this event so that there are more food and drinks available if you run out of your own carry-ins. It was particularly hot so I wish I would have brought an umbrella and/or chair, but I only had a blanket this time. The MSO is my favorite night, it's the perfect balance of classical and contemporary recognizable tunes. Definitely recommend to anyone who is a music lover! read more

tl;dr - Chill music vibes and you spend most of your time lounging, snacking and catching up with friends on summer Tuesdays. Chill on the Hill is hosted in Humboldt Park by the Bay View Neighborhood Association on Tuesdays in June through August. Never has there been a more free and enjoyable way to spend a weeknight (and work night for some) with music and friends while drinking and snacking the night away without getting too wild. You can bring everything with you, we usually use lots of blankets (good for sitting on and eventually covering up with on some of the "chillier" June Tuesday nights) some tailgating chairs and I've even seen people put tailgating tents up! You can also bring your own (adult if applicable) beverages and food. There are a fair amount of food trucks that stay busy pretty much all night (Streetza Pizza, Gouda Girls, Hue and GTO to name a few.) Special shout out to Gouda Girls, where my boyfriend got "the best cheese steak sandwich of his life." Sponsors line the side of the venue with little tents and you can also pick up an official Chill on the Hill T-shirt or hoodie there, as well as donation/volunteer tables. Chill on the Hill in the Bay VIEW neighborhood is good for: - Chilling (natch) - Kids (so many kids gettin' their "Free Range" on, which is awesome) - Families (See above) - Drink Locally (Grab a Lakefront Brewery beer near the stage, or grab a St. Francis Brewery pint at the Humboldt Park Beer garden, you can grab 'n' go!) - Eats (Tenuta's has a few good sandwiches, or there's tacos, etc.) - Carry In the above and save your scratch! - Music (Rock bands, brass bands, jazz bands, it's all here) Bring a blanket, or a couple low chairs, and post up on the Hill. Chill on the Hill is basically a huge bowl on a hill, so if you're hill-averse, just sit lower towards the bandstand. Handicap parking spots are limited behind the band shell. This is one of my favorite places to be in Milwaukee in the summertime. There is a huge variety of musical styles and the audiences vary based on who playing. But the constant seems to be a tremendous feeling of community when all of Bay View gathers to enjoy the sunshine, and let their kids run around on the hill. In fact, much of the time, the music is simply a backdrop for the gathering of friends, neighbors and classmates from the area who come to enjoy each others' company. You can bring your own food or drink (including alcohol, which is also available on-site). A thick blanket or folding chair is a must, because the grass can be scratchy early in the year. Chill was packed because of a special show by the MSO. ckily we found our friend Lori L. She had a space all decked out. Parking is is extremly hard to come by. The parking checker was having an awesome day! We parked several blocks away and walked. There were a variety of vendors such as Tenuta's, Hue, and The Gouda Girls. The MSO was a treat to watch. They played everything from the "Star Spangled Banner" to some of its movie soundtracks like "Jurassic Park" to introduce upcoming events. It was a nice pre 4th family event. read more

Chill on the Hill keeps getting better every year. I remember years ago when only a few hundred people attended the event...now it averages over 2,500 every Tuesday! However, don't be concerned about too many long lines or lack of space like Jazz in the Park. Here are some tips for enjoying Chill: 1) If you absolutely need to park there is a lot where you can pay $3. Otherwise plan to get there early and park on the northeast corner and walk a little bit or better yet ride your bike there. 2) The only line that can get crazy are the bathrooms. The bandshell bathroom is the smallest one so your best bet is to walk to the pavilion. 3) Popular food options can sell out so don't wait until the bitter end to your grub on. Also, if you are a coffee drinker you won't find any at Chill. StreetZa, Gouda Girls, Hue, Babe's, and GTO have been staples the last few years. Also, you can buy beer and sausages from the county parks stands. 4) If you are trying to find people, make sure you stake out the same area every week. There aren't a ton of landmarks so it is not easy to find everyone. 5) Fill out the freebie drawings. At intermission they draw for prizes from the sponsors and others. 6) Be prepared to deal with tons of kids and dogs. This is a family friendly event so kids and dogs WILL be running around. 7) You can bring in your own food and beverages; however, sometimes it is cool to support the local vendors and buy some goodies from them. 8) Definitely bring a blanket or chair or both because unfortunately June in Milwaukee can still be cold :( 9) If you have lived in Bay View for any period of time, be prepared to see tons of people you know. It is like going to the South Shore Farmer's Market! 10) Now sit back, kick back, grab a libation, and watch some awesome music! read more

I go to Chill On The Hill during the summer to just relax and enjoy the weather & music. (I try to make it to at least one a year) The first one of the 2015 Chill on the Hill season was fantastic. The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra performed and it was great. I enjoy classical music and to hear MSO, for free, in the park on a nice summer day was fun (although I would recommend spending some money to support the arts in Milwaukee). I know last year (2014), my husband and I went to see the Five Card Studs and it was a fun show to watch as well. (But I can't remember if we to any other ones....ha!) It's always nice to have a variety of food (food truck or stands) to buy from if you are hungry. Or bring your own food and have a picnic. Make sure you bring your own blanket or chair to sit on...otherwise you'll be sitting on grass (unless you like that sort of thing). read more

I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars because I think Chill on the Hill is better than the other "music in the park" events I've been to, BUT I haven't been to them all, so I'll hold off for now. First you should know that the event takes place Tuesday nights in the summer at Humboldt Park in Bay View (check the Bay View Neighborhood Association website http://www.bayviewneighborhood.org/ for the schedule). What I like most is the vibe. It really is "chill." There is a large age range, including some kids, but not too many running around ruining the relaxing atmosphere. You can dance if you want or you can just sit and listen to the music or chat with a friend with the music in the background. I have varying tastes in music and usually enjoy the genre being played. They will often have an opening act and a headliner. Last night, there were three or four different acts. Tents with vendors line up along the southeast paved path and food trucks and food tents are set up along the road behind the stage on the south side of the stage. Beer is sold, and I think wine too, but I see lots of people bring their own and no one harasses then about it. Again, it's very chill. You can look for parking on the street or pay a few bucks and park right in the park behind the hill. BTW, this park has a beer garden to the south of the hill, so that's another entertainment option. read more

Tuesday nights from roughly Memorial Day - Labor Day the bandshell in Humboldt Park is host to a very diverse selection of mostly local music performers. Sponsors pitch their tents/tables on the perimeter and the streets are lined with a variety of food trucks that change from week to week. And on the hill the neighborhood is well represented. Bring a blanket or chair, snack tables and coolers and sit back and enjoy the show. read more

Last night was my first Chill on the Hill and a ridiculous amount of fun was had! The music was lively, the food was great, tons of dogs everywhere, and really friendly families! (Those of you who don't like children or dogs might as well stay home because there were TONS of both!) There were about 6 food vendors including Street Za, GTO's, Hue, and the Gouda Girls Cheese Truck. We ended up with a taco platter from GTO's and a delicious bean burger from the Gouda Girls. We came prepared with our own cans of beer, and I saw plenty of folks with bottles (and boxes) of wine. Everyone we encountered was really friendly and happy to chat or give our dog bits of their picnic food. The music itself was really good and the hill is a great venue for it! We sat directly on the grass but I saw plenty of people with blankets, fold able chairs, or even picnic tables. Things you should keep in mind before going: -Parking sucks. Everybody and their mother and brother and sister and aunt takes their car. Instead of parking in the park, try a side street. -The food lines get busier as the night goes on. Getting their early (5:45) allowed us no waits and food within 5 minutes. -Again, there are a ton of kids. Running everywhere. It got a little much sometimes (like when these jerk 8 year olds nearly ran over our dog on their bikes) but alcohol helped calm our annoyance. Overall, great fun and a really cheap way to spend a Tuesday night during the summer! read more

Imagine Jazz in the park, but with a diverse group of bands and a bigger crowd sitting in a huge bowl enjoying good music. This is what you get with the relatively new "Chill on the Hill". I went there for the first time yesterday, and was thoroughly impressed by the music selection and how big the event was. I would estimate at least 1000 people were in the park listening to the band.. This event is definitely more family friendly, in that there is relatively no "big crowds" near the concession stands or really any standing around. Everyone is sitting and enjoying the music while most people BYOB. Very few vendors selling any type of alcohol. Almost encouraged to bring your own booze. I highly recommend this for Tuesday nights. This is really the best thing to do on Tuesdays. And of course its FREE! read more

It just feels good to get out and be a part of the neighborhood and Humboldt park is the perfect setting for the occasion. A key word here is CHILL. Be prepared to dress warmer in the beginning of the season. Once that sun gets behind the trees - it cools down quite a bit! I can't review anything on Yelp anymore without sounding like a Bay View spokesperson coming here to talk the neighborhood up. But seriously. I could not have landed in a better spot in Milwaukee, and Chill on the Hill is another bonus of living in the neighborhood. Stopped by last week to see De La Buena. Lots of good local food trucks and people camped out on picnic blankets and folding chairs with coolers and food galore; like a more laid back (and more free) Ravinia Festival. Family friendly but also a great time for a childless 20-something heathen like myself. I'm impressed that they pull this off every week, all summer long, and I'll be back--next time with my cooler in tow. read more

Chill out with friends and family on a Tuesday night. I think 2013 marks my 3rd or 4th year as a regular here. I can't really remember since I tend to indulge in libations of all flavors and shapes. We actually "closed" the park on occasion... but didn't get a bumper sticker. I guess I'll have to hit up Wolski's for another one of those. The bottomline: Chill on the Hill is a good time. Currently, it is EXTREMELY family friendly - lots of kids, and animals as well. Although, seeing how the crowd has increased in size over the years, I question if it will stay that way. Once in a while, I spot a few rotten eggs. Hopefully, they don't grow in number... or stench. The food vendors serve nothing to write home to momma about. Some is average, some is below average. I also tend to bring my own food, so I haven't tried it all. Guanajatos serves some Mexican fare, and Streetza Pizza serves... well... pizza. There is also a snack truck, and a vendor serving up some SE Asian cuisine (Vietnamese, if I recall correctly. But I haven't tried this one yet). There is a small choice of adult beverages to choose from including Miller and Lakefront products. BYOB is where it's at! And I can't forget Babe's Ice Cream. They definitely lead the pack in tastiness with their oh-so-creamy-goodness! The music is eclectic and sometimes follows a theme (The American Legion Band always plays the 4th of July week, and an Irish band and step dancers come in the week of Irish Fest). You can get the whole summer's lineup on the Bay View Neighborhood Association Website, or in local papers. Some nights have an opening act that could be anything from a band, to a high school drumline, to dancers. Music starts at 6:00pm if there is an opening act. Otherwise they start at 6:30pm. The music acts are good and the sound quality is professional. The one complaint I have is the volume level. It doesn't seem to bother most people, so it might just be me. But sometimes I would like to be able to sit in the FAR BACK and just chat with the folks I'm with. But no matter how far back you are, you find yourself straining to hear the people with whom you're talking. With the size of the area, I don't think taking it down a couple notches is unreasonable. I mean, it's not Summerfest. *shrug* Parking can get pretty rough. Bathroom lines get longer as the night goes on. And forget about getting in and out during intermission. The audience faces east, so you're never looking into the setting sun. While there are times we have to deal with the obnoxiousness of mosquitoes, they don't seem to be at their worst on the hill. The lagoon is just across the parkway, and I assume they prefer to mingle over there. Eat lots of garlic, curry, and onion the morning of, and they'll probably pester the other 2000 people instead of you. Sorry, I can't help if your significant-other makes you sleep on the couch. I can only suggest solutions to one problem at a time. Watch out for duck poo. There isn't a lot on the hill, but once in a while I come across a couple golden nuggets. There are ample garbage & recycle bins. I don't remember seeing any of them overflowing... which can be unsightly. There are a total of 2 picnic benches on the hill. If you want one, you'll probably have to get there 3 days early. Finally, it's Humboldt Park. In my opinion, one of Milwaukee's finest parks. But admittedly, I'm biased. read more

I'm hoping on the review bandwagon - 5 Stars. Love this venue/event that happens every Tuesday night during summer. Moving down to the area halfway through this season, I haven't missed a Tuesday yet. There are food trucks, community tents, craft beer, pet hydration stations, and much more. I've always walk here yet when it comes to parking it does seem like they have a good amount of parking since they open up the grass for people to park on. The atmosphere here is really nice and chill (see what I did there). You are never really packed together like other city music series so you can enjoy your space and spread out. I'll be hitting this music series up many more times this year and years to come. read more

Definitely my favorite local summer concert series. Great line up of artists and local talent. Love to see the kids drum line, batton twirlers, Irish dancers, and other random opening acts. Very community focused and family friendly. Even on the busiest of summer nights, parking is never a real issue, there is always plenty of space on the aforementioned hill, and it never gets crazy. For the gal on a budget, it's a great free Tuesday night activity. BYOB if you catch my drift. I rarely even look at who's playing. I go almost every week to support my neighborhood and the local music scene no matter what the genre. With plenty of food trucks at the park, the new Beer Garden, and the great local restaurants and bars near by, it makes for a perfect night out! read more

Great event with good music and lots of food trucks.. But severe shortage of bathroom facilities. The porta potties were disgusting and the lines were long. No place to wash your hands. Given the numbers of people and the food and beverages being consumed the lack of wash room facilities is appalling. read more
