After my four year adventure in Boston, I have decided to move my palette to Brooklyn, NY. Tucked away on Franklin Street in Clinton Hill is the best damn tacos I have found in brooklyn. Don't be confused when you show up. The front is a bar with solid frozen margs that give you an awesome brain freeze. Keep on walking out back and you'll find a stationary food truck with picnic tables littered in front. (If you want to skip the bar part, just go through the back entrance). The beauty of chilo's is both the price point ($3/4/5 depending on the taco) and the OPTIONS. You have the standards: chicken, beef, chorizo) and then stuff you've never knew you wanted like duck and cactus. And there is a multitude of toppings and sauces you can choose from to even further excite your mouth. The only thing I could wish they had was a dance space and Chilo's would get a full legit five stars. Really I'm giving it 4.5, but let me tell you why this place is AMAZING!!!! So I was first brought here on weds, 6/28/16. It was sometime around 11pm. Soooo, as a friend and I made a left turn off Bedford Ave. onto Clifton Pl. and half way up the block this heavenly smokey seasoned Mexican grill aroma is flowing down the street as you get closer. The first thing you'll see is this large black slide gate and a lot of people outside just chillin at tables. Then the food truck is against the back wall and it's being manned by two cooks and one person in the register......and they take charge cards too. So we continued walking to the corner of Franklin Ave and the door is on the left. The door handle on the second door is Theodore Roosevelt I believe lol. So we walk inside and it's busy. Not like, square dancing leaning side to side all the time to get where you're going busy but it's quite full. It's not huge space but it's long. There's plenty of seats in there. If you walk in and see no seats just give it time you won't be standing long. The liquor choices are pretty extensive but the ultimate drink you must try are any of their frozen drinks, more specifically "The Hemingway". It's pretty sweet for my tastebuds but I'm not gonna lie, it's sweet for a good reason......it sneaks up on you and it's only $12 and worth every cent. It's smooth not crunchy or have bits of ice floating around. It's a perfect consistency. There may be whiskey in it......a lot of whiskey which is why it's so sweet. All of the bartenders are super chill. This dude Johnny is cool as hell. I've had every single taco on that mutha f'n truck here and here are the prices, names, ratings 1-5 off the top of my head: $3-carnitas (pork butt) 4.5, chicken 4, nopales (cactus) 3.5...$3.50-chorizo 5, cochinita (pork shoulder) 5, smoked beef 5...$4-huitlachoce (mushrooms from corn or corn smut) 4...$4.50-shrimp 4...$5-duck 5, pork belly 4.5, fish 4. There's 8 different sauces you can add to your taco yourself. Now let me tell you, it's Sunday July 3rd right now...I've been there 5-6x over the last 3 days. They offer tortas and vegetarian tostadas but I haven't bought any yet. I tried a piece of one of the ground beef and chorizo with cheese tortas and it's now marked for death in my book lol. That sandwich is f'n baller. My absolute favorite tacos though, the mutha f'n duck and smoked beef. The duck is sweet, smokey, savory and tender. The beef has a mild spice with intense flavor and a perfectly seasoned salty smoke slow roast flavor. Honestly, there's nothing on the menu that you have to be stuck chewing for a while. Everything is cooked to a perfection-ate tenderness. You don't need a fork, you need a spoon lol. It's good to find something like this in my old hood (well it's not my old hood anymore....starting to look like Williamsburg lol). Everything you eat here is filling. The one taco I wish I could give a 5 is the pork belly. It's one half inch slice of pork belly but that sh!t is good as f*** lmao. I just wish maybe they presented it in the taco differently because when you go in for the bite you get quite a bit of the veggies and taco, then somewhere as you're chewing you get the pork belly flavor. At one time I found myself taking the pork out the taco and breaking it into pieces and hand tossing it so I get the flavor all over. After that I'M GOOOOOD. The bar closes @2am sun-thurs, 4am fri and sat. The truck during the weekday closes at 12am and weekends (fri and sat) at 2am. I mean really though, the ambiance is great. The music is colorful and plays something everyone can like. I've seen parents come in and eat with their kids outside and inside (before 8pm). I literally had a dope a$$ great time here Friday. I came in by myself at 1:40pm. By the time all my friends came in and we chilled, ate, drank, played games and so forth, we left around midnight in a group of five lmao. Plus I made a new foodie friend. Easily I spent $200 that day lmao in that one bar and nothing is expensive. Drink prices are great. Food is great, lighting has this purplish blue setting. I mean there's nothing more I can say but just come. Oh yeah......the bathroom is AMAZING. For one it's clean. If you go in there during the evening, you're not going to want to leave. It's like being in space because of this light system they have and these green stars are everywhere. This bar is literally a hook up central lmao. Fine women and guys for the ladies lol. I love this place. The frozen margs taste of fresh lime juice and are potent. The tequilas and mezcals are all legit. No caramel color added if you catch my drift. But the tacos are the star. Cochinita is insane. Smoked beef is like a hug from your adorable chain-smoking abuelita in the best way. The nopales are also treated with respect and enthusiasm. The tacos each come with their own accoutrement which makes me very happy. This isn't the kind of cook who puts cotija and guac on everything because Mexican. There's a great array of salsas for you to sample, along with fresh chopped limes and other fixings. Value was pretty on par for the price. Service: we did not wait long for either food or drink. All staff members were attentive and friendly. Drinks: A handful of good beers for $7 (including my favorite for summer: Bell's Oberon), the margs were tasty and there were some affordable can beers as well (Tecate/Modelo). A very good value. Ambiance: I really liked the back yard, outdoor taco truck set up. We met with some rain and were able to quickly transition indoors which is more of a typical long barroom setup. Tacos are a little bit overpriced in my opinion. Flavors are good, but the amount of meat/protein in them just isn't enough. You can get tacos somewhere closeby (Bushwick/Fort Greene) for roughly the same price - heck, they may even be cheaper but still taste great. Only thing I like coming to this bar is their homemade cocktail, Painkiller which is amazing. I have high hopes for this place. Solid tacos at great prices and the drinks are also on point. My only complaint is that it took at least 10 minutes each time I tried to order at the bar (on fairly quiet weeknights, mind you). Each time, the bartender would repeatedly serve people who arrived after me. I've never experienced standing patiently at a bar, money in hand, making eye contact with the bartender, and still having to say, "Hey! Can I place an order?" Yet every time, it's been the same scenario. As soon as there's a better groove with the bar service, this place will be my go-to in the neighborhood. I got 2 beef tacos and one chicken taco and they were probably the worst tacos I've ever had in my entire life (even worst than summer camp tacos). The soft shell was very hard, almost stale like. And the beef tacos were extremely dry. The chicken was ground chicken tacos and that was very dry and left more to be desired from. Underwhelming for me, and I'm sad because I so wanted to like this place. Maybe I'm being extra picky because I just had amazing tacos in LA recently, but either way I was disappointed. I got three tacos: cochinita, fish, and pork belly. The cochinita flavor was pretty good but the pork was dry for me. When I had cochinita pibil in LA, there was a lot more of the marinade/sauce, which kind of made it for me. The cochinita at Chilo's just wasn't that satisfying sopping pile of shredded achiote pork that I was looking for. The fish taco consisted of fried fish and the batter was just wayyyy too thick and greasy. The fish itself was still tender and yummy in the batter but it felt like there was a 1:1 ratio of batter to fish. It just felt so heavy and kinda didn't sit well. Like... it felt like my throat was coated in oil. The sauce, however, tasted pretty good. The last taco I had was the pork belly. Dry and hard. I couldn't really finish it. I was really looking forward to a tender juicy pork belly and this was not that. Salsas and sauces and picked peppers to dress all of the tacos were all good (at least what I tried). I got the spicy margarita and this too was ok but not stellar. I'd probably give this place another shot though -- maybe it was just an off day?
