We came for dinner on a Sunday evening, and had no problem getting a table or timely service. I ordered the Seco de Pollo and my friend ordered the Vegetariano Saltado. What I love about this place is that the food is more on the simple side; they're not trying too hard to be trendy, they're just delivering great flavor. I have no idea how the white rice is prepared, but it's surprisingly flavorful (I could have eaten an entire plate of just rice). My friend and I both enjoyed our meals and ate every last crumb off the plate. This place is very affordable. My meal (after 20% tip) was $16.39. Pro-tip if you've never been here: This restaurant is pretty small and it does get busy. I wouldn't recommend this place for large groups (that's not to say they won't seat you, but it might take a while). read more

So a little back story on my experience with Chimborazo. Before I moved to Minneapolis I was visiting from out of state to get some interviews done and scope the area out. I stopped in a shop in NE and the owner told me that this was her favorite place and when I moved here I just had to try it. She wrote it down on a post-it note for me and I kept it in my purse for probably close to a year. One day my partner and I both had the day off and I found the post-it note (yeah, I know I should clean my purse out more often) and we decided to get brunch here. We sat outside on the patio and I ordered some dish with steak, rice, beans, and an egg over top of it. It was the most wonderful thing I have ever tasted. I mean...the green sauce.....what is it even? I don't know....other than PURE MAGIC IN MY MOUTH. Earlier this week we stopped back in for round #2 because it was Wednesday and they have a fabulous date night special. The special includes a bottle of wine and two entrees for 35.00. the place can get a little packed especially on Wednesday (we tried to do the date night special another time but the wait was too long for our hungry bellies). so I suggest getting there a little early or preparing for a wait. This place was okay. This was my first time trying Ecuadorian food so I wasn't sure what to expect. Because of COVID they are doing dine in differently --customers have to go through the back and hands get sprayed with hand sanitizer. You can either sit in the patio or inside. Came here for Mother's Day. Walked in and about half of the room we were in was empty, the back part looked busier. One of the 3 waitresses said she'd be right with us. We stood in the middle of the restaurant for almost 7 minutes until someone finally sat us. Clearly they were understaffed I thought. We get seated and the waitress takes our order. I notice that people that came after us got our food. This was probably 25 minutes of waiting until our waitress finally came back and apologized and said she will check on our order. As I watch her go to the kitchen, I notice she gets upset with the kitchen...they forgot to make our food. The food was excellent. For the price honestly it's 5 stars. The waitress apologized and gave us free desert which was good customer service, I wish it didn't take 25 minutes to realize we still didn't have our food, but still good job on doing the right thing. 4 stars. The way the kitchen and what looked like head chef reacted. 1 star. They were emotionless. I didn't see any of them say anything after they got told they forgot our food. I'll be back for sure, as the food was delicious. Had the kitchen staff apologized to the waitress. It would be 4 stars, but I was a server once and I know how hard of a job it is. When I had the kitchen make a mistake, they apologized. This kitchen didn't, at least not when I was watching this all go down. read more

Never had Ecuadorian cuisine so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, overall I was quite pleased with my experience here. We ordered the saltado and chaulafan as our main dish. The saltado was quite flavorful but had a little too much sauce than what I'd prefer; the avocado was a nice touch. The chaulafan was well balanced and tasty. I love this place. I discovered it at a Twin Cities supper club a few months ago and have been back 2-3 times since then. How have I missed out on this place? Bummed I haven't discovered this place earlier! Chimborazo's limeade, chicha morada, and encocado (shrimp) are my GO to drinks/dishes there. Even their yuca frita (fried cassava) are amazingly fresh. A lot of the dishes have an amazing herb or onion/tomato side, which are simple but delicious. Having spent a few weeks in Peru before, I can vouch that this place is legit and authentic! Also, awesome customer service and really friendly wait staff. They are really efficient at moving tables and getting everyone in. What an awesome find. I stumbled across this place after desperately searching Yelp for "arroz con pollo." You see, I was fresh off a visit to Costa Rica and craving the country's signature meal that's basically their take on fried rice. Made my hopeful trek out to Northeast, and was surprised to see a line out the door on a Friday night! Obviously my "secret" find was extremely popular in the neighborhood. Luckily, the staff was hustling and we were seated in no time. We ordered the Chaulafan, aka Equador's take on the amazing arroz con pollo I had in Costa Rica, and it hit the spot! There were subtle differences - namely a ton more meat - but it was absolutely delicious. So awesome to find an authentic take on something I'd never imagined being able to get in the states. Sometimes I worry that when I go to a place that's so highly rated, it will skew my expectations, or I'll be that one unlucky sap that gets the hair in my food that day. But Chimborazo, wowowowow. It exceeeeeded expectations!! Someone recently recommended that I get the shrimp ceviche here, and I'm a ceviche freak. However, I usually am drawn to white fish and scallop ceviche, as I've found that shrimp can get too tough. Well Chimborazo says, "NAH!" and serves up a mouth-watering-ly tender and citrusy bowl of heaven's tears, perfectly seasoned and dappled with fried corn and plantains for additional texture and flavor. I was able to build my own plate during my last visit = flank steak, mote, and llapingachos. I think most of the meals come with this "green sauce", and I don't know what's in it but you will be missing out if you're not drinking this with your pinky up. I chose the mote to trick myself into thinking I was eating a healthy vegetable, and the llapingachos because they are freaking perfection - a savory potato patty filled with cheese. The flank steak was marinated so well - the flavor was so good I wanted to keep chewing and never swallow it. Ok that sounded gross. Get your ass to Chimborazo if you've never been. This place is amazing!!! I've lived down the street for 5 yrs and never been since it looks a little like a hole in the wall. However, inside is quaint but you will only be here for the food. We started out sharing each of the empanadas on the appetizer menu. Both delicious but the beef one was by far my fave. For our entrees I got the mahi econcados. The coconut sauce on this dish had me salivating for days. It was unbelievable! I stopped eating everything else on the plate (rice) that was "wasting my time" so I could finish all of the fish. My bf ordered the llapingachos com chorizo. This dish literally had it all. He was so confused on where to start, but don't worry he got a rhythm going and cleaned his plate. Be sure to order a side of aji Verdi to dip everything in because this sauce is fantastic! Someone in another post said they had every intention of eating one of the best tres leches but were just too full to do it. Appetizers: Empanda De Carne- Packed with beef, raisins and other delightful toppings. You get two which are perfect for sharing with a group of four. Whatever the (aji crillo)sauce is that is served with them I could have ate a gallon of it. Plantano Maduro- Fried sweet plantains with cheese. Also served with the tasty aji crillo sauce. This is a small little place, tucked in on the corner of Central and 29th Ave NE. Parking in the back is limited, but we were able to find an open spot. I'm feeling super silly for not coming here sooner! I can't believe I lived in this neighborhood for 3 years and only dined at Chimborazo today. We arrived at 11:40am for brunch, and it was getting really busy. At the height of the lunch hour they were filled to capacity and I could easily see why: this food is incredible. Hornado con Papas, the juiciest roasted pulled pork I've ever eaten. Comes with these little potato fritters, and a tomato, onion and cilantro salad that tastes so good. That green sauce they serve is absolutely delicious, I couldn't get enough so I asked for another cup. My sister had the Churrasco with perfectly grilled flank steak, yucca (cassava) fries and sweet plantains. Came with a little mound of rice with a fried egg on top, and some pinto beans. Seriously good brunch. Both of these dishes were $11.50 and I think that's a great deal for some real grub that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Their Ecuadorian coffee is also very good, they kept our refills coming. We shared the empanadas con queso and beef. My only issue with them is I thought they looked bigger from the other pictures on Yelp. Could probably have done with a few more of them on the side, they were extremely flavorful and crispy. We also shared the Tres Leches cake which was sweet and milky, just the way it should be. I'm so glad they have it here, we used to go to ALM Corner Cafe (Venezuelan) up the road for Tres Leches but then they closed down in early 2013 which made me terribly sad. I felt like reciting Hamlet's soliloquy whilst my mouth was experiencing the joy of Ecuadorian pork. To eat, or not to eat at Chimborazo. Unlike Hamlet, I didn't have such a hard struggle. It looked like there was only one server on over lunch today on President's Day, so it took over an hour and a half start to finish for our meal, which is ridiculous. They should have had someone else working with her. At times a guy came out of the back and helped the poor girl bus tables or bring out food, but they should have anticipated the holiday and planned for it. She was nice enough, and apologetic, but still it was torturously slow and painful. I got the pork plate with llapingachos, mote, and salad. The mote was mediocre but the pork and the llapingachos were money. Salad was good too. The spicy green sauce and peanut sauce are the things dreams are made of. My kiddo got a chicken sandwich with fries and like it a lot too, and he's very picky. I had a bite and it was delish. Fries were good too. I wanted to try about 6 other things on the menu too. Chimborazo is a shining example of the food being so good, you don't even care if it took your server 15 minutes to stop by long enough to fill up your water glass, and then walk away without taking your order. Sometimes things are worth your patience - and Chimborazo is. If you're looking for fast and friendly service here, you might be looking in the wrong place. Be ready for a wait, both to get seated - this tiny space fills up quickly! - and to put in an order. I'd highly recommend the yuca frita as an appetizer (fried cassava with garlic and served with green sauce), the caldo de bolas de verde (a peanut broth soup with starchy vegetables and a green plantain dumpling filled with meat and more veggies), the saltado (chicken or beef with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, served with rice and avocado), and the sweet plantains for dessert. So this is not my normal choice for cuisine, but I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. A friend chose the place and we met up for an early brunch. I started with a mimosa, lured in by the options that extended beyond the traditional orange juice. I chose a mango mimosa, and it was really pretty decent. A nice way to start a meal. For food, there were lots of options that were explained well on the menu. We did find the staff's menu knowledge to be a bit average. One server had to ask another what the special was, the question of what was in the offered tamale seemed to perplex them for a few minutes. But overall I did not have any trouble figuring out what was being offered and choosing an option. I went with the llapingachos, which were described as cheese-stuffed potato pancakes. They were actually more like pillowy potato cakes in the way of like a crab cake... not potato pancakes like latkes. They were griddled and really delicious. Add thick smoky bacon and two eggs, plus a side of generously buttered toast, and it was really very good. There was also an accompanying cup of green sauce that was SUPER spicy. I only tasted a bit and then put it aside but I liked the option for any spice lovers out there. It was really a pretty satisfying and different brunch. The people I was with all reported positive reviews for their items -- I was a bit too consumed with my own food, but the chorizo is more like kielbasa sausage format than chopped up and crumbly, and my buddy said the omelet was really good. That's what I know. Service, as I alluded to above, was kind of hit or miss. Everyone was very nice, but things took a long time and seemed a bit disorganized. We were told by our friends who had been there before that they had never experienced bad service before, so maybe it was just an off day. We arrived at 10 and by the time we left, there were people lined up in the hallway waiting for a table. Seems very popular on the weekends. All in all though, it was not a fancy place but serves up some really good eats and (from all I can tell) some pretty authentic food. Really great. I can't wait to come back and try dinner. I stand by the fact that the hornado is amazing, however my last couple experiences have not been as shining as the first. It breaks my heart, but I have to demote Chimborazo one star. The main reason is that the service can be VERY slow. One server in particular seems to be the culprit. Last time I was there, it felt as if the other server was unsuccessfully trying to pick up her slack. Both of them seem nice enough (and one was apologetic on behalf of the other), but it seemed like we were just being ignored for the first 15 minutes after we sat down and that's not cool. In addition to the service issues, there was an unfortunate llapingachos incident. I'm hoping this was just a fluke because they are usually so good, but my llapingachos were dry and lukewarm during that same visit. Really, that trip alone would probably garner a 2 or 3 star experience, but every other time I've been here has been a 4 or a 5 so I remain hopeful. Let's work this out, Chimborazo. Chimborazzo. Wow. You have been good to me. After just two visits, I am hooked on this place. Walking in to Chimborazzo feels like walking into a friend's kitchen for a leisurely meal. In each of my visits, we ended up sitting and chatting for 2 or 3 hours. A cozy environment - perfect lighting, friendly service, and soothing Ecuadorian music. And the food! A plate full of so many diverse flavors. Each dish has a slew of ingredients that come together to create a cohesive flavor profile. My first visit was with a group of 10, and EVERYONE loved their food. You can't go wrong on their menu. And it's so affordable - you can easily get out of there for 10 or 12 bucks. Took man friend here for quick lunch break for his birthday. First, be aware that the service here is a bit slower (one waitress serving the whole lunch time). We came within the last hour it was open for lunch (around 2:15pm) and it still took little over an hour to order, scarf food down, and pay. That being said, the service was good and she came to our times multiple times in between to check on us. Second, Yucca fries are good -- crunchy but a bit tart. It comes with salsa on top and a bit of lime/lemon juice on bottom, and a dipping sauce on the side. The lemon and salsa reminded me of ceviche and while my boyfriend liked it; i prefer yucca fries american style like Muddy waters. Again, he loved it, but just not my kinda thing. Third, croquettes are delicious and bit sweeter. This was little surprising to us as we typically have croquettes that are more savory. Fourth, Cerdo sandwich is amaze-balls. If you like carnitas or roast pork, this bad boy is for you. The savory pork was perfectly matched with the sweet plantains and the bread was lightly toasted with butter. I drool as I type about my lunch order. I ordered it with side of quinoa veggie soup which was also delicious. I typically am not a fan of quinoa but this soup was more of a vegetable soup than quinoa. Definitely definitely recommend. Fifth, churrasco (flank steak with plantains, fried egg, rice, beans, and fries) was delicious. Steak was chewier than we typically like (medium done) but seasoning was on point. Everything was good although I am not a huge fan of the beans (just seem bland relative to everything else we had). Finally, Tres Leches cake. I love Tres Leches and this place did not disappoint. The portion is perfect for two people to share. The pound cake is actually more dense than other tres leches I had but I kind of prefer it this way because it holds the sauce better. Will definitely order this again. Parking was easy (private lot and decent street parking). Will be coming back to try other items! read more
