We were excited to eat here for dinner as we are a family of several vegetarian and latin fusion food lovers. I wanted to really love this place but unfortunately the flavors just weren't there. The restaurant is fun decor and service is friendly and efficient; they do an excellent job. Our granddaughters ordered mango, passionfruit, citrus, rhubarb drinks, soda. The drinks were thick and overwhelmingly sweet. Adding some sparkling water to it did help. As far as food; The food came promptly, but the flavors were not there. The Brussel sprouts came with a caramelized onion jam which was way too sweet and overpowered all the other flavors. Very disappointing. The shrimp aguachile was extremely soupy with overpowered spice, making it unable to taste the shrimp. The plantain chips were thick and hard, rather tasteless. The arepas were a little more flavorful but really wouldn't recommend any particular one that we tried. A fun spot! We came here for my friend's bachelorette party and even though it was raining we were still able to sit "outside". There is something for everyone here as they can accommodate a lot of diets and you can customize your dishes. They also have a lot of fun drink options, even for those who don't drink alcohol. Served on a warm cornmeal griddle cake and some Yuca fries to go along with it, it is full of flavor. All of the Arepas looked delicious and you cannot go wrong with what you pick. After hearing so much hype about Hola Arepa, I was excited to finally give it a try. The food was good and definitely flavorful, but it didn't quite live up to the expectations I had going in. While I enjoyed my meal, I found myself having a hard time justifying the prices for what you get. I find myself here often to enjoy their expansive menu of Latin inspired dishes and fun cocktails. They also play into fun themes around the holidays and throughout the year with themed drinks. The hallmark of Hola Arepa is of course their stuffed Arepas, which are Venezuelan style. Arepas are made in house every day using cornmeal dough (which is gluten free!). The Arepas are stuffed with various meats, veggies and toppings, and surely there is one for everyone on their menu. My favorites are the Cuban Arepa and the Shredded Beef and Sweet Plantain Arepa. They have both an aoli and a chimmichurri sauce to choose from for dipping. Lastly, their Yuca fries deserve a special call out- they are the best Yuca I've found in the twin cities. I had the Black Bean and Queso Fresco Arepa and the fillings were spot-on: flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and the sauces were vibrant. Made my way to one of my favorite places for their Halloween pop up. Made some reservations for inside, but I think the patio might have been a little better for the moody lighting. Parking here isnt always the best cause they have a small parking lot and then its street parking. This place stays busy but this time they actually seated me as soon as we got there. I love this place! The ambiance and cocktails are on fire! Some how Hola Arepa's patio makes you feel like you're not on the busy corner of 35 and Nicollet. They have a small parking lot and despite the corner being chaotic I usually find street parking pretty easily. My group started with the chips and four salsa appetizers, add queso. The middle two green ones were our favorite. My friend commented the cheese was salty, I however gobbled it right up! Arepas were everyone's choice. I stopped by hola arepa for their Halloween themed cursed Cove. They had wonderful Halloween cocktails. Seriously they were so fun! We started with a nachos which my partner labeled as his favorite nachos he's ever had. I got the steak chimichurri Arepa and he got the burger. We both loved our meals. The food is familiar enough to be approachable for shy eaters but there is absolutely nothing boring about these dishes. Personally, I'm obsessed with fried chicken and cachapa. I've branched out with the hot honey chicken arepa (also insane), and have had bites of almost every other arepa on the menu but I always go back to my one true love. Service is good, usually nothing over the top and the servers can get busy at times but I've never been stuck waiting and who wants to bug a server when you have yucca fries to eat. They have a small variety on the menu (also a kids menu), with most items beings gluten free. Since this was my first time here I felt like I had to try the arepa. There were so many kinds to choose from! And your choice of yuca fries or mixed greens that come with the arepa. I tried the black bean and sweet potato arepa with the mixed green salad. The arepa reminded me of a taco to be honest but with a little fluffier breading. I really enjoyed mine and it had really nice flavors. I wasn't a big fan of the mint in there but I bet some people love it. The mixed greens had an amazing fresh dressing that I could eat everyday. We also enjoyed the chips and salsa. it comes with four different kinds of salsas in shallow dishes, so there isn't a ton of salsa, but it was enough for the table. They have some great happy hour deals if you're into that! It also appears they have brunch on the weekends. We had no issues with service. Parking can be challenging in this busy area. I haven't reviewed a restaurant in a while but after I ate here I came running to yelp. I was recommended this place by my cousin since I've been living out of state for 6 years. First of all, I had no idea it was reservation only or at least they said every table had been reserved. I have never heard of a place that didn't have any tables available for walk in other than maybe an overpriced steakhouse. Maybe I should have done more research but that was surprising. The place was so packed that we had to wait for the bar in the tiny entry way along with those who were waiting for their reservation. When we finally got a spot they were so busy that they didn't help us out or say hello for over 10 minutes. The only menu they gave us was their egregiously priced holiday drinks. It was only after we got our waters and overpriced drinks that they gave us their regular menu, which had their regular drinks. Their water cups had a horrible smoky burnt plastic smell, I had to hold my breath while drinking my water. I eventually grabbed a straw because I couldn't stand the smell. Again maybe I should have done more research but you can't tell me this isn't all intentional. I ordered the pork belly arepas but I had no idea I'd be getting a vegetarian arepa. Other than the 6 teeny tiny pieces of incredibly fatty pork belly it was mainly sweet potatoes. I didn't come here to eat corn and sweet potatoes. I decided against the yuca fries because again, I didn't come here to just eat heavy starches. The salad, banana peppers and onions were the best parts. Even then I couldn't eat more than half of the food given to me. I should have waited the extra thirty minutes to get the regular menu so I wouldn't have wasted money on that expensive holiday drink but you live and you learn. We also never got refills on our waters even though we were at the bar. My husband really loved his arepa, it was the shredded beef and plantain one. I don't understand how his arepa was stacked fat with meat and mine was basically vegetarian. Either way, he had a great experience haha. He also loved the yuca fries and the sauce that came with it. If you want drinks and a cute Hawaiian atmosphere in a Latin style restaurant I guess this place would be a fun vibe. If I came back, I'd get something else and something off their regular drink menu. Edit: had to mention a group came to the bar and the bartender was so rude to them and asked if they had a reservation, if they didn't they needed to wait in the front. One of the women mentioned they had a reservation and were told to go to the bar if they wanted drinks.
