Definitely my go-to place when I have to have some Chinese food when I don't order in, not necessarily because it's all you can eat, which is rarely what I do. But I like to buy by weight from the buffet bar which on the weekends for lunch and dinner includes dim sum, not a lot of choices but very well prepared. The buffet bar in general has all kinds of food, the sushi bar has an excellent reputation to be located in a Chinese restaurant! Came here to eat on Tuesday afternoon around 2pm. I was back at my hotel within the hour and spent the next 14 hours with things spewing from both ends. TERRIBLE. I cannot say which dish, as I had samples of several chicken recipes, two seafood recipes, and two types of eggroll/springroll. Also had fountain drink, Dr. Pepper. This is wildly unacceptable for foodservice. I ate Chinese buffets a lot when attending JWU in Miami for...Culinary School!!! Never had an issue. Really great buffet for the price. The have sushi and soup stations. It's best to go early because it seems once the "good" sushi is picked through, they don't replace it. I don't eat imitation crab so I'm picky with lower tier sushi. The soup is decent for a chinese buffet, I like the duck ramen but the broth is nothing spectacular and the meat is a lot of bone and fat. They offer a choice of various noodles though and that part is pretty cool. The actual buffet area has a lot of variety, from your typical sesame chicken to chicken feet. However, where they REALLY shine is on their sushi bar and "soup" bar. At the soup bar, you can place an order for one of 6-7 soups choosing your broth, noodles, and meat choices. Some of these are pretty darn impressive considering they are all all you can eat--one of my favorites is the duck soup with pho noodles. All are made fresh. Quality of food is pretty good for a chinese buffet. Their sushi selection was more than most, but a lot of it was very heavy rice based. The hibachi was very good and the server who made the food was very efficient. In regards to their buffet food, it is what you expect from a chinese buffet- a little salty and heavy The atmosphere is very nice and the facility is clean. The waiters are excellent and very friendly. Price wise, we went on a weekend for dinner so it was 11.59; a little on the expensive end but not too outrageous for what you get. Yep. I gave a Chinese buffet named China Buffet five freakin' stars. But let's be clear - my ratings are based on context. Does China Buffet's quality compare with that of fine dining establishment? The China Buffet is home to the Mile Long Buffet Bar. And they are serious! There's four food buffets, a sushi bar, and a hibachi bar. And both the sushi & hibachi bars are manned by people who know how to cook! I was amazed at the various types of sushi available and my friend was delighted with her vegetable hibachi. But, unfortunately, the food itself didn't look that appetizing. We showed up around an acceptable eating hour (it's been awhile, but I'm sure it was between 6-7pm on a weekday) so I expected the food to be a bit "fresher" than it was. I had some soup, noodles and fruit from the regular food bar, and even then I wasn't swayed by it. I still went back to the sushi bar a few times because it was the best (freshest) thing out there. The chicken dishes looked congealed, the vegetables were mainly covered or drowning in oil, and the soup had very little flavor. But, for the price you pay the sushi & hibachi bar make up for it all. And, I'm sure what I saw was because it was slow or just an off day. I'm more than willing to try it again if I go with a non-vegetarian :) Quick tip: The place is hard to find with all the construction going on in the strip mall behind it. But, it's located across the street from where Sitar USED to be. Turn at the street next to the Original Mattress Factory and it's down the road on the left. Before the office park. After a recent trip to China Buffet, I decided once and for all that I had to grant this place the final star. What pushed me over the line? The sushi, in fact. China Buffet's sushi quality, while never bad, has improved noticeably. I was extremely pleased with the quality and flavor of the rolls and nigiri - as good as any I've had in the area. The shrimp tempura roll was superb, as was another roll that I believe was a spicy tuna & salmon roll. The white tuna nigiri was absolutely amazing; I'm talking melt-in-your-mouth good. I ate every piece of it that was available... I've always liked China Buffet, but thought two things would make it perfect: offering traditional "chicken on a stick" style teriyaki chicken, and improve the sushi. Underwhelming. If I'm going to do my best impression of a competitive eater on some fatty, oily, MSG laden food, I want to enjoy it. With that in mind, I did not enjoy my trip to China Buffet. Maybe I thought it would be better based on all the great reviews or maybe it was just the time of night I dined there (it was a bit after 8pm and the food seemed a little short of fresh). Whatever it was, I probably should have stuck with the sushi (which was pretty good, but not spectacular) or hit up the hibachi area (there was nothing out at the time and I didn't want to bother the chef manning the hibachi station) rather than delving into the typical Chinese menu options that had been left to get some sun under the intense heating lamps. But what was I supposed to do? I had to go all out at a buffet! Regardless, the typical menu options were pretty bland and oily. Also, there were very few vegetarian options. Now I'm no vegetarian, but I do enjoy many of the tofu/vegetable options typically available on a Chinese restaurant menu, and these options were sadly lacking at China buffet. You would think they'd be able to squeeze in more vegetarian options somewhere in their "mile-long" buffet. Ultimately, it seems as though China Buffet is a solid and reasonably priced option if you're going to fill up on sushi and hibachi. Excellent environment, except for a couple at the next table thinking that China only has one language for the entire country and were telling the waitress that they were speaking to her in Chinese. "Morons, if she's even from China, I think she knows her own countries national language. How about ask her if she speaks Mandarin or maybe Cantonese?" This Buffet is not actually a whole mile long. I loved the sushi and the lo mein bar looked like it would be nice, but I didn't try it this time around. I did get the chance to try the sushi bar. WONDERFUL. This place definitely is a great value. It was 8.50 for the lunch buffet and there was an immense selection. However, with some of the selection you miss out on quality. Need to update my review based on my last visit here. Came in on Sunday evening near 9 pm. Although they're closed at 10 pm, the noodle, hibachi, and sushi stations all already closed when I got there! Really disappointed because those are basically the only good food here. Forced to pick food from the buffet, and they all looked sad and soggy, swimming in the sauce. They cleaned all of the food around 9.40 pm while we're still there. Lots of noises and banging stuff from the process, like we're basically asked to go right away. The experience was really really bad. Bad enough to make me swear to never again come back to this place. The 1 star only goes to the ice cream station. (None for the rest of the food). FYI, even though most of the stations are closed and the food in the buffet was not refilled while I was there, they still charge my group for the full price! Never again! The name China Buffet restaurant in Durham would make you think it's a car wash or something, but it's actually a China Buffet! (Wow, I was totally fooled there). So anyway, I am being silly, but they weren't too creative in their name. The restaurant and the area it is in are pretty dated looking as other reviewers have suggested (When it comes to buffets though it's more about the food and not the décor). In terms of selection I think China Buffet delivers. Plenty of the typical items to choose from and some more obscure items as well (fried sushi anyone?) The taste of the items I tried recently for lunch was just decent, but nothing knocked my socks off. The egg roll was bland, the fried shrimp small and the egg drop soup had a weird thickness to it. The price point wasn't bad for an AYCE lunch buffet (just over $10). I was full at the end, just not fully satisfied. I may come back to China Buffet if I can remember to save one of those coupons that they send often in the mail. I definitely won't be a regular though. read more

Update: I've been to this place about three times. For the first time I tried their hibachi grill bar. Actually, they also serve noodle soup there and that's what I had. It's probably the healthiest portion of the buffet. I had fish ball noodle soup and everything was quite fresh, light, and not oily! I'm a fan! I came here on a Sunday evening with my brother. We came close to closing time, so I wasn't surprised that they were almost out of sushi. The place is clean and as the name suggests, it is a buffet. I enjoy buffets because I like being able to try a variety of foods and eat until I'm full. However, I was disappointed by the selection here. Perhaps it was because it was the end of the night, but if you didn't want something that was fried, there wasn't much to choose from. I ordered a sweet tea, and found it way too sweet. The waitstaff were to-the-point, so I can't say that they were friendly or warm. The restrooms were clean, which is a plus. It isn't in an ideal spot and could be easily missed if you didn't already know it existed. The service is usually great no matter how busy. The servers are quick to refill your glasses and are usually very quick to get you the check when you are done. Sometimes the food selection is lacking during busy times as there is only one sushi chef. That being said, the sushi is great, especially for the price. You could find better sushi but you will NOT find sushi or a Chinese buffet that tastes better in this price range; not in Raleigh/Durham area at least. If you do, then please let me know! For a buffet, this place is definitely worth it. I would suggest only hitting the sushi section, the soup section and the hibachi section. There is a pretty good variety of sushi with salmon, tuna, eel, octopus, yellow fin, etc (just make sure that you take out the cream cheese) and usually the sushi chef can keep up with the crowds. The soup section is great because you can choose your soup and everything that goes into it (including duck soup). I love the hibachi section because you get to choose your ingredients (beef, chicken, shrimp, broccoli, mushrooms, noodles, etc) and a sauce flavoring (garlic sauce, etc) and they will stir fry it right there in front of you. I usually don't get a sauce just shrimp and veggies. The main buffet is okay, just the usual Chinese Buffet, but I would definitely stick to the sushi, soup and hibachi sections. read more

We went for lunch around noon assuming that the food would be fresh and delicious because it's lunch time! However, we were sadly mistaken. The pork egg roll had undercooked looking pork in it. The chicken in every single dish we tried was over cooked and hard. The hibachi grill didn't cook my food long enough so the vegetables didn't even taste sautéed, they were hard and undercooked. Monday night treat...well, where to start? Maybe the apparently homeless fellow near the front door soliciting patrons as they leave the place. Or the mushroom chicken station with plenty of mushrooms but ZERO chicken. Other items just plain cold. Is 7:40 an appropriate time to vacuum the place? Apparently so at the China Buffet. I thought I may have just tried the wrong selections...it happens, right? So in the interest of fair play, I made a 2nd pass. Teriyaki chicken was overcooked and tasteless. Chicken and broccoli- ice cold. I thought the chicken drumsticks were interesting: all were wings and an interesting almost orange color...and ice cold. Want the sushi? You'll have to get the attention of the staff member who was watching his smart phone. For the record, it's not like the place was empty. I counted about 25 other poor saps in the place. Is the place clean? It should be as an employee just cleaned the divider in my booth with me still seated. That must be "last call for cold fake Chinese food" signal.
