a take out container of food

We live 35 minutes away and passed tons of sushi spots to get to our favorite! The service is always amazing and every time i go i leave stuffed and happy. Oishii Roll is the best sushi roll you'll ever eat! We went tonight and got pick up (they're closed for dining) and decided to eat at the picnic tables down a few shops. The staff is so incredibly friendly and the wait took about 15 minutes. Please go eat here and support a 17yr old restaurant! The food and staff are amazing!

This was my first trip to Oishii, and felt a little pressed for time because of a movie we wanted to catch in an hour... and rushed is no way to feel when you step into Oishii. Frankly, I'm relatively new to the world of sushi, and have a lot to learn. I was initially overwhelmed by the menu choices - and that's a good thing, I guess? I can talk about the wait staff - friendly, courteous, helpful, and willing to help us get to the movie on time. The restaurant was clean, and quickly filled up almost to capacity - it seems to be a favorite for the pre-movie crowd. I wound up selecting a wasabi-glazed sashimi that was just terrific. I'm looking forward to revisiting this place when I have more time, and can begin to expand my horizons.

This is by far the best sushi around. Nice atmosphere. Great little bar area! Service is also really good. Thanks Oishii! I will be back. This place is still great! Best sushi around. Only thing I would change is the no gun sign. Bad guys don't really care about a sign or laws. Only thing you did was keep me from possibly protecting you in a bad situation. Oh well.... maybe y'all have some swords or something back behind the bar. Love you guys!!!!

I've been going to Oishii sporadically since 2005 and it's not really changed much since then. The service is definitely hit or miss which is expected considering they almost exclusively hire college-age folks to be servers. As to the non-sushi food: I like the soba ok though the last time I got it the noodles were too al dente and the veggie tempura is fine if a bit over-breaded. The gyoza is also always good and the scallop fry is quite delicious. The seaweed salad is totally adequate and, unlike another sushi place in Durham (*cough* M Sushi *cough*), Oishii doesn't just give you a small serving of marinated seaweed on top of a bowl of filler greens. As to the sushi: the nigiri and sashimi are pretty much hit or miss, though the scallops are always top notch. For any non-maki sushi I would rather go to M or Sansui in Durham or City Market in downtown Raleigh. As to the 'fun' rolls, they definitely know how to layer on some eel, avocado or salmon and the chef has an adept hand with the fryer, so that's really the best strategy here. It's going to cost more than crappy BOGO places like Shiki or Sake Bomb, but honestly if you're looking for a sushi place just on that criterion, you're going to be just as happy eating it out of a grocery store as at Nobu.

    I 'heart' this platter

As far as Orange Country goes, this place has the most consistent service and solid offering of standard sushi. If someone can recommend a better place to get sushi in the triangle, please tell me - because I don't think it exists (but happy to check it out!). While I agree with the other reviewer regarding the sashimi, I don't believe that it is always 'precut'. My sashimi as I watched was cut from larger pieces right there in front of me. I would advise sitting at the sushi bar, order the chef's pick, and you will get some good stuff. One of the menu items that I do rather like is the bbq eel. Side items and appetizers are pretty standard, not so amazing, but then I don't go here for steamed dumplings or ramen (i wish there was a place for that). Service has always been great, and despite the weird location, over the past 2 years this place has been solidly consistent. Due to how close it is.. hard to beat.

Great prices! They don't hold back on the food! I'm a big fan of their lunch bento box! I can't wait to go back.

My office is near this shopping center and I was too hungry to even think what I wanted to eat. So my coworker asked if I wanted to eat sushi and she will pick it up. I decided to get the sashimi bento. I definitely made a mistake to order from here. When I opened the box, the sashimi did not look fresh at all; however, the presentation looks nice. If I trashed it, then it's a waste of money. I forced myself to finish this and it ridiculous how awful it was. It seems like it's been there for awhile. Good thing for the side salad to help me finish it off. I do not recommend this place at all.

Rising Sun roll missing eel and had double imitation crab, instead.
    Brooke R.

Super disappointed in the food quality. 3 days ago, we drove over an hour for some good sushi and instead got sub-par, dry, "stale" tasting sushi. The nigiri was okay but definitely not fresh. The salmon skin was tasteless with the texture feeling like it had been fried a few days prior and then left out. The viagra, NC, and super duper rolls were also just okay- definitely not worth the prices ($16-$17 each). The worst part was the rising sun roll that was completely botched. The description said it had crab meat and eel. However, my roll had imitation crab inside and outside, without any eel. I emailed them that evening and haven't gotten a response. Yes, it's difficult right now with quarantine and craziness, but if I'm paying for something and trying to support local businesses, I expect the quality to match the price. Hopefully this review will be seen and I can get either a replacement or refund asap.

Presentation is always on point at Oishii

My first two rolls took a while to come out, but I think that was because one of the rolls I ordered was fried. My last two rolls came out much quicker and I ordered those one at a time. AYCE dinner was $26.99, and I felt like I got my moneys worth with 26 pieces of sushi (10 of those pieces were HUGE pieces of sushi too). Appa Roll (5): This roll was pretty, green, and tasty! I loved the shrimp tempura and avocado combination. Even though this was a 5 piece roll, the pieces were big, so it was just as filling as the standard 8 piece. TNT Roll (5): I enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't get this one again because it is fried and has cream cheese (too filling when you are trying to do AYCE). I really liked the mango in the roll, so I want to try their other rolls with mango! The pieces were huge, this roll was more filling than the standard 8 piece. Chapel Hill Roll (8): My favorite roll of the night, I loved the different fish on top and the avocado was delicious. Salmon Lover Roll (8): If you like salmon and avocado, this roll is for you! A lot of other salmon forward rolls have cream cheese, so I loved that this one had avocado instead. Delicious! I look forward to coming back with a friend or my husband so we can share rolls and try even more varieties!

It was mostly rice mixed with sad iceberg lettuce ( mixed greens ) and the toppings were skimpy. For $18 this was disappointing. It was supposed to have three proteins. I added radish, crunchy onion and edamame. It was sad. In addition to the toppings I ordered there was a bunch of ginger and a marble-sized glob of wasabi hiding in the mix. Glad I avoided being surprised by that. I took the photo after I'd eaten so you can see how much rice was still in the bowl. The waiter was super sweet. He'd do better at another job. I'll stick to Zen Fish. There everything is fresh and vibrant and the choices are more exciting. Plus, their mixed greens are actually 'mixed greens'.

While the restaurant was clean…read morewith pleasant background music, the overall experience was poor, especially given the prices. The Food We ordered the Shrimp Katsu ($16) with rice and the Beef Teriyaki ($18), since they were out of the Salmon Teriyaki. A major red flag was hearing a series of loud microwave beeps immediately after placing our order. The food came out after 10-15 minutes. The Positive: Both of our meals came with excellent rice that was fluffy and fragrant, and a small side salad with a standard ginger dressing. The Disappointment: My Shrimp Katsu was highly disappointing. It tasted nothing like shrimp and resembled processed meat, similar to imitation crab, but shaped like mozzarella sticks drizzled with sweet mayo. The texture and flavor were clearly not fresh shrimp. My wife's Beef Teriyaki was also underwhelming. The beef was chewy and served over soggy lettuce, with a very basic, overly sweet teriyaki glaze. The Service The lone waitress was polite but demonstrated poor customer service skills. The most jarring part of the meal was when she began to hover near our table while we were eating, making us feel rushed. At 8:20 PM, she told us they were closing at 8:30 PM, pressuring us to finish quickly. Their Google listing clearly states a 9:00 PM closing time. As someone who tries to support local Asian cuisine, I was genuinely disappointed by both the low quality of the food and the pushy, rushed service. We will not be returning. Too expensive for low quality food.

My wife and I enjoyed our dinner at Elements in Chapel Hill. This restaurant serves what I'd…read moredescribe as both modern Asian fusion (with a mostly Vietnamese influence) and New American cuisine. If you're seeking more straightforward or "authentic" Asian cuisine, this is not the place. I read Elements served sushi at one point, but not anymore. The vibe of this place is contemporary American, on the finer dining side. If you're looking for a nice meal out in Chapel Hill, then Elements fits the bill. We liked this place better than Jujube, which also serves "elevated" Asian fusion, across the street. Owner and chef, Michael Chuong, previously worked at ãn in Cary. ãn opened in 2006 and closed in 2017. kō*än opened in ãn's place in 2019. My wife and I weren't in the Triangle when ãn was around, but we have been to kō*än and are fans. At first, I thought ãn and kō*än might be related, but I don't think they are. I'm not sure. Chuong left ãn years before it closed. Chuong opened Elements in 2012 in Chapel Hill's East 54 mixed-use development on 54. It's the same development that has Brenz Pizza Co. (another place we're a fan of), First Watch, and Hawthorne & Wood (outstanding restaurant). Parking can get a bit tight here, but we've ultimately never had a problem finding a spot. We visited on a Friday night and the restaurant was moderately busy. On this particular night, the clientele was mostly late middle age and older. Perhaps not too surprising for this part of town, and the menu appeared to appropriately reflect the tastes of the immediate area's demographic. I appreciated the simple menu, with six small plate options priced at $7-16 per plate and seven main plate options priced at $26-40 per plate. There were six items on the dessert menu ($10 each) and a decent selection of alcoholic beverages (full bar). I believe some menu items change frequently/daily. Here's what we got: Specialty Cocktails * Elementini ($13) - Absolut, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, lemon juice, club soda Small Plates * Hydro Bibb Wedge ($14) - Hydro Bibb, hard-boiled farm egg, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, buttermilk blue cheese dressing, sweet-n-salty lardons, crispy onions, and carrot ribbons * Kale Caesar ($13) - Tuscan kale, wasabi Caesar dressing, anchovy, panko soft-boiled egg, Parmigiano-Reggiano Main Plates * Fresh Catch - North Carolina Trout (market price - $36) - Viet style with stir-fried vegetables, crispy shallots, nuoc cham, peanuts, and rice * Bo Luc Lac ($40) - wok filet mignon, hydro Bibb, buttermilk blue cheese dressing, cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, house truffle fries Dessert * Elements Pie ($10) - dark Belgian chocolate mousse, Oreo crust, Chantilly cream, berry coulis Overall, the food and drink were delicious and presented beautifully. We liked everything. The Elementini was tasty, well balanced, and not too sweet. It was a good cocktail. My wife and I disagreed on the salads. My wife preferred the Kale Caesar while I preferred the Hydro Bibb Wedge. I do agree with my wife that the Kale Caesar was more creative. It had a hint of wasabi, which provided a nice little kick. The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny yolk. The Bibb was crisp and satisfying. I liked the small touches such as the crispy, rich lardons (bacon) and the way the egg was sliced. Both salads were hearty (not something I really say about salads) and filling, especially the Kale Caesar. The "Fresh Catch" NC Trout was indeed fresh with generous, meaty portions of fish. Again, I like the details like the thinly sliced purple carrots. Nuoc cham is the same thing as nuoc mam, a yummy Vietnamese fish sauce. The Bo Luc Lac filet mignon was another item that was cooked perfectly. The steak was super tender. However, it was also too salty. The house truffle fries were awesome. They were more like steak fries or potato wedges - thick. I will say though, as someone who has ordered a lot of shaking beef (Bo Luc Lac), $40 is pricey. Then again, it is quality filet mignon. The Elements Pie was terrific. It had lots of different textures. The dessert was creamy but not heavy, smooth, and had a delectable crust. I recommend everything listed above if they're still available when you visit. The food here is high quality. The restaurant space is deceivingly large because of multiple rooms, at least one of which was closed during our visit. There's a wraparound bar and a pleasant, mostly-covered, outdoor patio. Service was excellent. Joseph, an undergrad at UNC, was our server. He was great; very friendly and he worked hard. He was running around so much that he was visibly sweating. When my wife had to leave the table, a manager (I believe one of Michael's daughters) folded my wife's napkin.
