I am a frequent customer to China Chef and have learn that much like any other Chinese restaurant they have dishes they really knock out of the park and others ...well..not so much. When purchasing for my family we usually order the same things that through trial and error we can rely on being good. Sometimes we experiment with new items to try too. Shrimp lo mein- they have really good flavorful lo mein. It's not overly greasy and actually has flavor unlike some other Chinese options in the area. They give you a good amount of shrimp and it's always cooked perfectly. Wonton Soup- We always get two large wonton soups because it's family favorite and goes pretty quickly. Not overly salty and has a substantial amount of yummy meat in wontons. You get about 8-9 wontons per large soup. General Tsos Chicken- 9 out of 10 times it is cooked to perfection. Juicy large pieces in a very nice sauce. It may say spicy but I am a wimp and don't think it's spicy at all. Every once in a a while it will be overcooked and a bit too hard but it's super rare and usually a big hit! It's served with broccoli which is covered in that amazing sauce. Egg rolls- I usually get one egg roll per person. They are nothing to write home about but better than most places I have tried. For a short while we were also ordering sweet and sour chicken because my youngest loves breaded chicken of any kind. Lately and more often than not the chicken is overcooked and rubbery. It's an amazing dish if properly tended to but since it doesn't travel well and not sitting in sauce it gets dry and rubbery really fast so we stopped adding that to our take out orders in the last year or so. Overall they are fast and efficient, friendly, clean, and have a wide variety of classic American Chinese options to choose from. It's hit or miss but more hit than miss so I still go back. I still experiment and I would still recommend to anyone looking for good Chinese food. read more

Okay, I read reviews and thought the reviews were mixed, so we wanted to try China Chef. We were traveling and hungry! Husband ordered the pork with chinese vegetables. It came with pork fried rice and a drink. I ordered the steamed chicken and mixed vegetables with steamed rice. My husband's pork with Chinese vegetables was great! My steamed chicken with Chinese vegetables was SO disgusting, I couldn't eat the chicken. I am an avid cook. I understand about "velveting" meats. It tenderizes the meat, but you MUST only marinate it in the mixture for 30 minutes or less, otherwise it'll turn to a gross jelly like substance. This is what my "steamed" chicken tasted like. It was so gross tasting, I couldn't eat it. I tossed it aside, and ate the mixed veggies, which were very fresh and tasty! They just need to learn how to not over marinate the chicken. Maybe they need to Google it! The pork fried dumplings were pretty tasty. You could taste quite a bit of ginger mixed with the pork. Would I return? Ordered take out over the holidays in December and I was super pleased with the food from China Chef. Potstickers/dumplings were very flavorful. I asked for extra sauce, which was provided. The shrimp fried rice was the bomb and it was enough for about 3 meals! Same for the vegetable fried rice. I loved the veggies and they were PERFECTLY cooked! Stopped in here to grab dinner to go after travelling back from a Yankees Spring Training game in Tampa. We all had shrimp rolls. Two shrimps were found in each roll. Pretty good. I had the Young Chow Fried Rice. Excellent. Just as it would taste in New York. My better half had the Beef Lo Mien. No complaints from her. Our hosts' wife had the General Tso's Chicken. Found it to be okay. Our host had the House Special Chow Mein. He didn't complain, but at 4:00am he had bodily fluids coming out of both ends. Not good. read more

Used to come all the time last time I went got chicken with broccoli our usual and the entire thing tasted of shrimp! No taste of anything else of it! This is the one chinese dish I get for my mom who has a bad shrimp and shellfish allergy! When I called freaking out I was told "Oh? Oh really? Wow so sorry." I understand things get busy, taking orders on the phone, the hustle of getting people in and out can take a toll, however... I ordered a meal for one, in person, at register. There were two very young kids (teens) running register. Male and female. The female had bangs hanging in her eyes, and looked unkempt and agitated with everything. Her mannerisms showed that she was very impatient from the moment I placed my order to the time she threw the bag of my items on the counter. Her eye rolling was a complete insult as I repeated my order because she didn't listen to me the first time , as she was mad because the other kid on the phone was in her way. Several more angry moves later.. I couldn't help myself. I said to her, "you really seem angry" . She said what? I repeated. She looked at me , and again the eye roll and death stare. From there, she retaliated by taking her time giving the cooks my order. I will tell you, I understand that empathy is a lovely thing. I understand servers get the brunt of cranky customers. I am always the one to eat luke warm soup, because I don't want servers to feel bad. I tip very well, sometimes for so-so service. But Wow. This was tough to turn the other cheek, and stay silent as this was just that rude. My single order took 40 minutes. There were several of those minutes where she just stood and stared at me , with no phone ringing, no customers... just me and her. I won't be back. I ordered take out from here by mistake on Friday, meaning to order from China Palace. I should have canceled right away when I realized the mistake but the hubby said "why don't we give it a try?" I was told 20 mins when I placed the order. We got there, saw at least ten people waiting for their orders, and realized Ted & Christopher hit the nail right on the head. Do not ever go by the time they tell you. You will always be waiting. We finally walked out 45 mins after I placed the order with our subpar Chinese, it was no better than any other chinese, just average food. The price is cheap, but the wait is too long to handle. I will not be ordering again. With the number of people in the kitchen cooking, they should not have been that far behind. read more

Just moved here from Cali and damn do I miss the food. My mom picked up some Chinese food from China Chef and we've eaten here a few times. Never really liked it, but we can't find much around here. I was eating my slimy noodles, dry chicken, & terrible 'beef' and broccoli(I only liked the broccoli) and as I'm taking bites and swallowing I feel a sharp object about to go down my throat. I quickly spit out the 'food' and grapped this metal bent wire object out and just stared at it. Wondering why I even decided to eat here again. This is not okay. This is too big of an object that could have punctured my gums or hurt something else in my body. And the wanton soup is not wanton soup. I seriously have never tasted anything so bland and it looks like it's frozen store bought food! My mom also mentioned when she's been in there a few times it was very very dirty. The staff had dirty clothes & weren't acting appropriate like one should in a restaurant business. Handling food is supposed to be in a clean environment. China Chef is Toledo Blade Blvd and Price Blvd in Price Crossings plaza. After trying it I noticed that they categorized themselves as New York Style Chinese. Not quite sure what that means as NY style, it is what I was used to growing up in Ct. crab Rangoon, Hot and Sour soup and Wonton soup are great. I am partial to the spring rolls. They have a great version of Lemon chicken. Portions are always big. Very good at what they do. Wide variety menu. Friendly people with a passion for cooking Chinese food. read more

The food here is average for chinese. It taste good and you would probably eat from here again if you tried it. I have it about once a week. The biggest issue (and the reason they don't get 4 stars) is when you call in your order it doesn't matter what time they tell you it's never ready. After a while I got used to this and just started coming later then they say. If they say 15 I come in 25, and if they say 20 I come in 30, etc. It doesn't matter how long you wait, they don't start making it until you show up and tell them your phone number. Others may have a different experience but I have this happen about 80% of the time I order here. It could be they want their food to be as fresh as possible and just put it together at the last moment for that sake, but I prefer food that's been in a container for 5-10 mins already then waiting 5-10 mins when I get there for it. The service is friendly though and I will continue to order from here, but if another place opened nearby with equal food quality that got their order out on time I'd switch to them. If they improve their timing I'll change my review. EDIT: Ordered there on Saturday night, was told 15 mins, showed up in 15 mins and it was already set to go, happy about that, if it happens a few more times I'll change my entire review read more

This is literally the worst food I've ever tasted. I am shocked this place stays in business. We were heading from hospital and wanted to pick up something quick. We knew we were getting strip mall food, but holy hell! The chicken is processed meat, the General tso's and sesame chicken was either 90-100% dough (no exaggeration) or was a thin strip that resembled shoe leather, but harder.
