I agree with other locals this is the best Chinese food in North Port. We bought a lot of items and I would say I liked them all. There is one minor exception. There's a hint of some spice I can't determine in some of the dishes that I think would be better left out but overall everything was very good. I order fairly regularly from this restaurant for take out. Portions are large, food is pretty good, prices are inexpensive. They are friendly and always busy. My order is always ready when I get there. Been going here for several years and so far have never been disappointed. I you want good take out Chinese food, this restaurant is good. Standard American style Chinese fare, a bit on the bland side and, unfortunately, served in styrofoam take out containers that melt a bit on contact with hot food. Lunch specials are a way to try the many dishes, but the lunch entrees only come with fried rice and a can of soda, no egg roll or soup option and they don't even include a fortune cookie. Staff was friendly enough but not very communicative when questions were asked of them, they're apparently not good at estimating when your takeout order will be ready, and they round up the bill to the nearest dollar instead of calculating tax accurately. When speaking English failed to elicit a response to my questions I spoke Mandarin to the young woman at the counter but she didn't even acknowledge it, so I'm not sure what languages the staff here prefer. If you want entrees with a more typical level of spice, when you order you have to emphasize that you want extra spicy. The menu advertises that this is New York style Chinese food, but even the supposedly spicy dishes are quite mild. No major deficits found here, but nothing to brag about, either. read more

3 star review but 4 stars if you compare it to other Chinese places in this area. I love Chinese food but because I've had it so often I'm really picky about it. I don't know what it is about Chinese food south of the Mason-Dixon line, but finding even semi-edible Chinese can be difficult. Most places rank a 1 or a 2. China Chef isn't going to win any awards. It's the same type of take-out Chinese food you'd get most anywhere. They don't have bold flavors or interesting dishes. You're not getting Peking Duck here. BUT...for what it is, it's consistently good. It's mediocre food done well. For instance, their Sweet and Sour chicken is always fried perfectly, giving you tasty, crunchy morsels rather than over breaded soggy ones. Their crispy beef was very crispy and very tasty. The roast pork with snow peas had a lot of good roast pork rather than skimpy portions buried in vegetables. So compared to much of the other Chinese food in this area, China Chef is head-and-shoulders above many other restaurants. It's easy become our go-to spot for decent, tasty takeout. read more

Best Chinese food around!! Tried several things. We pick up about every other week. Never had anything that was sub-par. Only reason they don't get 5stars is service. When you call to order they always say 20 minutes. Just double whatever time they say or you'll be sitting there quite a while. read more

My wife and I love good Chinese food. When we moved to North Port seven years ago, we tried every Chinese restaurant within a reasonable distance. China Chef is the place we settled on. Chinese food in the North Port Area, generally speaking, is not particularly good when compared to what's available in big cities. While China Chef is no exception, we do think it is the best of the local places. I agree with most of the reviewers comments. While they try to be friendly, it seems no one speaks English. It's as if they just arrived. Sometimes the food is ready, sometimes I have to wait. Overall, not a biggie. The best thing about China Chef is their lunch specials. We usually order four lunches, costing about twenty dollars. I separate the fried rice, doctor is up with Chinese vegetables and a mix of sauces and make another two meals. So, in summary, the food is the best around North Port and the lunch specials are a great way to go! read more

Not sure what makes the food so different compared to up north, but I find most little chinese places leave much to be desired. This is the best chinese I have found in the state of Florida. I would only give 3 stars, but seeing as though it far exceeds the local competition, it gets 4. this is the best china food i have ever eaten. i DIDNT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH COMMUNICATION. THE FOOD WAS READY WHEN I ARRIVED.
