Outside and inside was ghetto and shady but don't let that steer you away. The amount/quality of food you get here for a very inexpensive price is an excellent deal. I recommend the salt and pepper shrimp and fish. It's basically fried shrimp and fish in crispy batter topped with stir fried jalapenos and tiny bits of garlic. Those crispy morsels of fried garlic is the best part imo. I tried their kungpao chicken and beef/broccoli dish as well and it was alright (kinda like Panda Express). Owner is cool. He really packs on the food for sure! Waiting may take awhile though. I only see two chefs in the back so if you're ordering instead of just picking from the warmers, expect some wait time. Better yet, call ahead and you can just pick your orders up. They added some new item menus like honey fries as well, which sure sounds interesting. I LOVE CHINA EXPRESS!! If you love lots of food at a cheap price then this is also the place for you! Chinese takeaway containers are always bursting at the seams when you leave here and your wallet will not take a dent at all. At 4.19$ for a one item with rice and noodle you will leave happy and full! Food: I ALWAYS get the salt and pepper fish, even if I want something else, I always at least get a side order of it. The batter that the fish is deep fried in is always crispy and never oily. The fish tastes fresh and the sliced, uncooked jalapenos are always a nice touch of spice that I really enjoy. I also liked the rib n black bean sauce but I don't think they have that anymore as it was't on the menu and I haven't seen it put out in a long while. I'm also the type of person who never gets rice with my meal and only get noodles because I have a fancy rice cooker always out on the counter and will usually make my own rice at home. With my added rice, the amount of food that they give you will give you two feasts to enjoy, or even three if you are like me. I have tried almost everything on the menu and have never had any complaints. I even got food last night at 9:30pm and they were still busy with customers. They orange chicken I got wasn't fresh but I didn't expect it to be since I got there just a half hour before closing, it was still very good. The fish is ALWAYS fresh and made to order. BF got beef and broccoli, and they also cooked that made to order and the broccoli was so bright green and looked perfectly cooked that I instantly got jealous and wished I had gotten that too. I love their food, even if it is very Americanized, its delicious (and cheap!) Service: I am used to a lot of bad service at some Chinese or Viet restaurants, and I always accept this as normal behavior. But at China express, they really do love your business and smile at you when you come in. The older woman that is always working is so sweet, she smiles and talks as sweet as if you were her own family, it is always appreciated by me. Last night it was a young girl who I have seen a few times, she is nice but my favorite lady was on her break chatting on the phone seated in one of the booths, and she still smiled at me when I walked in. While I am not a regular that they see everyday or even once a month, I assume she smiles at everyone and that I appreciate as a customer. Service with a smile =). Decor: None, so don't expect any. The booths are always clean and there is siracha on every table. There is a TV in the corner but it is locked up and I have never seen it on in the years I have been here. This place also gets pretty hot during busy times, I suppose because the kitchen is pretty open and the steam tables make it hot and I don't think there is an air condition system in place. But that's okay, this place is defiantly more of a take out place anyway. My experience here was not great. First sight it's in a small little plaza, not to bad looking. The food is not good in my opinion. I can say it is cheap for a plate to be around 5 dollars. I might have higher standards for Fast Chinese food. This place did not meet my standards. I had the chow mien, fried rice, and broccoli with beef. The fried was hard. It was like the rice wasn't cook thoroughly and it was flavorless. It was basically colored hard rice with vegetable added to it. The chow mien hard some dried strands in it, it was oily and very orange. It was okay. The broccoli with beef was inconsistence. I had pieces that were very mushy and over cooked broccoli and some crunchy still a bit raw broccoli. I didn't even eat half of it. I was very much rather disappointed with the food. The lady behind the counter runs the place with an amazing place. If you walk in and noticed that some of her hot containers are emptied. There is a reason. Beyond the normal cooking experience. I came on a busy Friday night but let me tell you. When we received our food after about ten minutes of waiting: it was well worth the wait. I found my children trying to figure out which delicious aroma drifting out to us was our meal cooking. It was heavenly to see your food being made and know it's going to be hot off the grill..So to speak. It's not all Americanize there. She will tell you that if you want vegetable fried rice you should call her first. She will tell you there are no take out menus. I would recommend the combo plate with three items included. We had broccoli beef, teriyaki chicken and Mongolian beef with fried rice. Coming home with our dinner was torture. The aromas alone tortured us. But I wanted to eat the meal at home. Just the way it was prepared gave way to eating it at the site. WE wanted to savory the first bite. We were not let down. The first bite of Mongolian beef reminded me of the older days when the entire families got together to have meals. Not the artificial flavors of Chinese food we are so used too. So... I was craving some soup and passed by this place and ordered a large hot and sour soup togo. It was in a huge container (3-4 servings) and was super delish!! It is the best I have tried by far.... its a tad spicier than sour and thats how I like it.. It doesnt really come with chicken but I'm sure you can add it for an additional buck or something like that.. But I like it how it is for only 3.89!! Unbelievable!! Horrible food! Horrible experience and I will NEVER return. The food was over cooked, Kung pao and teriyaki chicken! The orange chicken looked like sweet and sour because it had red sauce, and they won't even let you sample before u buy. Big mistake buyin without trying it! I use to work at a Chinese restaurant in San Jose and it's one of the best. I just moved to Sacramento finally since my BF lives out here. He took me here many times. He knows the owner. Such a great lady! This is my go to Chinese place. They give you such a big portion and it's well worth it for the price! You could feed 10 people if u wanted too. I remember in high school, I order Chinese food for my lunch from my restaurant and it was a lot of food. Fed 6 people. But here, they give u lots! It's so much that the box is hard to close. I was referred here by Google voice. If you value cleanliness and good service, do not come here. As either of those concepts are totally alien at this establishment. I stood in line for what seemed to be going on an eternity. I'm certain the short pudgy lady behind the counter was helping others way before she would take my order. I found this to be unprofessional. I wait mainly because I was faint with hunger and truthfully, I was just too lazy to drive anywhere else. I wanted to get home to spend time with my mate. Finally, after getting the food, I hurriedly paid the short pudgy woman and split.. Soon as I got home I washed up and went to examine my food. I ordered egg foo young. The food was edible, but just barely . The white plastic containers witch held my order had egg foo young sauce every where. I was a bit repulsed but decided to try it anyway as I had foolishly spent good money on this unappetizing dish. I did regret it! However, tonight I took my daugher here for dinner and it was FLITHY...DISGUSTING...UNBEARABLE...STALEL... shall I continue? The chicken in the chicken and broccoli was GRAYISH. The teriyaki chicken was HARD AS CARDBOARD. The sauce was super salty. I took my plate to the counter to exchange for the mixed vegetable entre. 4 minutes later we received veggies soaked in sauce mixed with good ole HAIR!!! I miss the old owners. Regardless if they were busy I always had awesome service. The new guy owner is really nice but the fat, dark lady needs to learn how to give better customer service. When I walked in they were looking at me so all I said was "I called in for pick up?" And the rude prude already had a stank face on and goes it's not ready, it takes time. Like damn I know it takes time, but was I just suppose to go in and sit down and expect them to know I called in an order? I said no worries and sat down to wait. The other girl rings me up for my order and I pay for it before it's done. When it was done the big lady brought it to me and was like did you pay for this already? And before I could answer she turns to the other girl and was like did she pay for this? How much did she pay? Did you charge her for a large? The girl looks at the menu and says I charged her 3.89 cuz that was the only price up there for the soup and the b*tch gives her a death stare and goes this a large. I told her I can pay the difference it's no big deal and then she proceeds to converse in a Vietnamese with the guy on how much to charge for a large (like wth? How do you not know your own prices?) then since I only had my card I was charged twice for the credit card fee. I'm not upset over 50 cents, but I am upset that the lady was so rude throughout the whole situation. On top of that she left her phone in the dining area which I kindly point out and gave to her and no thank you or anything. I love supporting my local small businesses especially this place since I've been going to China Express when it was opened in Florin Mall but I will not be going back especially now that Michelle is no longer there to make it feel like home.
