I haven't been to Sunrise Chinese Restaurant on Mack Road since Covid, and stopped by today to check their catering menu. This restaurant is a to-go only restaurant, and gets plenty of traffic from the area. I went midday (3:00pm) and there were at least 4 customers in and out during the time I was there. While I was checking their menu, I decided to order, since I remember how good their chicken wings are. I ordered the chicken wings, and a lunch combo with chicken with black bean sauce. The combo comes with chow mein and fried rice and an egg roll for $13.99 but I asked for steam rice instead of fried rice. Unfortunately, I didn't check my plate before leaving the restaurant because they gave me all steam rice and no chow mein. Despite the error, their chicken wings are still the best, and the chicken with black bean sauce was very good. I would've like to have tried the chow mein. Also, I didn't notice that they charged $16.99 for the plate, which was a little steep considering I got no chow mein. Some of the condiments are extra, like the hot mustard, so ask for it before they ring up your bill. Tried this hidden gem for lunch today. I was impressed. The place only does take out. If you pay in cash you can avoid the 4% credit card fee. Don't ask for hot sauce, chili oil, or anything extra because they say no. They do have hot mustard and sweet and sour sauce for sale. This place has no frills, just good, fresh and generous portions. My new go to spot if you want good Chinese food. I ordered the sesame chicken lunch special, $14.25. The space is dark, the counter is cluttered and the workers are closed off from the clientele, suggesting security fears. The fried fish container was overfilled, with a rubber band to prevent food escaping, but the top lid was raised about 2 inches. The fish was perfectly fried, but lacked some seasoning. The eggplant was cut in thick pieces with an unusual, but tasty sauce. The eggplant was sort of dense. The mapo tofu was bland, but plenty of it. I drove quite a distance to try this place. Fairly crispy. Wished the chef was more aggressive with the salt and pepper though. Tender fish meat but some of the pieces have a slight metallic taste (fish isn't the best quality but I shouldn't be expecting too much lol). - Orange chicken: tasty! Deep fried to oblivion but in a good way so that the sauce can adhere to all of the nooks and crannies of the crust of each chicken piece. No skimping on the sauce sweetness but the sweetness isn't overbearing either. - Chow mein: very bouncy noodles but surprisingly quite bland. Usually I don't reach for the soy sauce packets when eating Chinese takeout but this would be one of the rare occasions where I would use them. --------------- Generous portions!! A recent YouTube video gave the salt and pepper spareribs and fish high reviews. The reviews are far from the truth. Mainly the quality of meat is lacking. There was hardly any rib meat and the fish was not flaky. Although the serving amount looks large, it's mostly flour batter. The fish is most likely only Tilapia. read more

The main thing this place offers is large portion size with great selection. Peking spare ribs- could be a be a bit more meaty but still delicious would recommend Salt and pepper Fish-great texture so wish the salt and pepper flavor came through more. Actual fish pieces inside the was not as large so mainly getting batter(which is crispy and delicious) Salt and pepper pork- pork could be a little more meaty and salt and Pepper flavor could be stronger. There were a few people in front of me, and it took about 15-20 minutes. I noticed several people came in to pick-up their phone orders. I'll keep that in mind the next time if I'm in a rush. Salt and Pepper Fried Fish A tad bit more dough than I like but very good. It wasn't overly salty, super crispy and holy - the portion is huge for $16.95. They also do S&P fried chicken and shrimp. House Chow Mein Chow Mein with cabbage, beef, chicken and shrimp. Nothing worth raving about but good. General Tso's Chicken It's similar to orange chicken without the tangy/citrus flavor. Again, big portion and savory sauce. I ate it with Trader Joe's frozen brown rice and it hit the spot! It reminded me the days I used to work at an office in Brooklyn. It is very easy to eat, and you can't stop eating it. It is everything that you would want. It's so crispy that you don't even need the walnuts. It stays crispy for a long time. I had such hi hopes for this place as we live somewhat nearby but unfortunately the food just wasn't up to par. We ordered the pork chow-mein, orange chicken, combination fried rice, and pepper and salt shrimp and paid about $73.00. The portions are hefty and at first glance the food looks delectable, but once you start eating it you'll realize it's flavorless. The fried rice had way too much soy sauce, the shrimp was over cooked, and the orange chicken was hard. I'm not sure if they combined older orange chicken with a few pieces of new chicken, but something was clearly off. I kept trying pieces of the orange chicken hoping I'd find a piece that was softer...but nope, every single piece was hard, chewy, and had wayyyy to much citrus flavor and will more than likely end up in the trash. If you like your battered dishes hard fried, this is the spot. My favorite is their honey shrimp - perfectly crispy and coated with sauce, no sogginess to be found. Their house chow mein is good quality and even gives notes of ginger but as others have mentioned, can be a bit bland. For us, it's nothing a few splashes of soy sauce can't fix. While their food is delicious, it's consistently a struggle to get in a phone order. We called multiple times and the line was either busy or would ring for a while then hang up. We assumed the reason they weren't picking up was because they were slammed but when we arrived, the restaurant was empty. Hoping that this is something that can be improved. read more

While I was waiting, 3 other people ordered the fish as well, and it gets good reviews here on Yelp, so I made the trip to Mack Rd at night once again. The good - my order was prepared quickly, and the amount of fish was very generous. The fish was tasty and spicy. The house chow mein that I also ordered had decent (read below) flavor. The bad - the salt and pepper fish had a great batter, but I feel they're battered too much, and the actual fish piece inside is tiny. My house chow mein didn't have a single shrimp in it. Lots of beef, which was good, but the char smell from the beef was the only thing you could taste on the noodles. It's almost like the chef cooked the noodles on whatever the beef was cooked on. The noodles we had ordered from here a month ago had very good flavor, but not a one note beef flavor. There was a lot of beef and chicken in the house chow mein, but zero shrimp means the cook either forgot or they didn't have them and thought it would be ok to add more beef. The food isn't bad -- I'd say it's average to slightly above average in flavor -- but the prices are way too high for what it is. I was shocked to pay $17 per plate for basic Chinese takeout, especially in the Mack Rd area. On top of that, they don't let you mix two sides on one plate like most places do. The portions are decent, but I personally don't think any takeout spot should be charging more than $13 per plate.
