Some of the best Northern Chinese food I've had, and probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in Sac overall. Starting with an appetizer, the lamb skewers taste stellar. Juicy and easily slides off the stick. They're relatively saltier than other restaurants but in a good way. Ask for extra cumin and thank me later. At 2 for $5, it's a no-brainer. The clay pot ribs with black bean sauce carries a strong savory aroma. It comes with some soy sauce on the side but it doesn't even need it. The crispy rice at the bottom tastes well-seasoned. Hard to go wrong with this dish if you're unsure what to order, and it can be shared with someone else. I recommend visiting with a group of 4 or less. This restaurant could potentially combine tables to accommodate larger crowds, but seating is limited to begin with. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a long time but for some reason I kept missing the opportunity and forgot about the place. Well, I'm really glad I met my friend for lunch here today. It was delicious! The space is small inside with wooden picnic style table and benches giving this place a hole in the wall feel. We were given two menus and an ordering sheet to check off the items we want. I love self-ordering like this because I can take my time. I hate feel rushing and end up ordering too much food! Thanks to other fellow Yelper's reviews. I knew I wanted to try the Clay Pot Rice. We got the Medium Ribs with Black Bean Sauce. It's enough for 2 or 3 people to share. Scooping out the burned and crunchy rice on the bottom of the pot was the best part. So satisfying when you get a spoonful of the really crunchy part. I wish there were more meat/ribs but I remember you can add additional items for few extra bucks. I'll keep that in mind the next time. Yes, I plan to bring my boys here soon. We order 7 different barbeque skewers and they were all delicious and flavorful. You can tell the meat has been well marinated. You can select spicy or non-spicy. Each order comes in two pieces. It was the perfect amount of food for two of us. I recommend and will likely order again are Chicken Gizzards, Sausages, Beef an definitely Bacon Shrimp. If I had to pick only one, it would be the Bacon Shrimp. The bacon is securely wrapped around the shrimp and making the shrimp very juicy and flavorful. Finally got around to trying this place out for a later lunch and every table was full, so we sat outside. Some tables opened up later and they let us move inside! The claypots are pretty good, a little too much rice to protein ratio. Surprisingly I liked the fish clay pot a lot more than the ribs. It was much more tender. But the flavor for both were perfect. Be forewarned, seating sucks as the interior is very small & not the best for large groups. We opted to sit outside due to this (not a problem). The waiter came by with some cups of water and a water pitcher. After some time we changed our minds to have our orders to go. The waiter came back and gave our water and cups to the customer sitting in front of us which was very odd. Anyways the food. We ordered three servings of the clay pot meals and three drinks. We ordered the clay pot first since it takes awhile to make. Da Fei Ge is authentic and is legit comfort food, where soups are stewed forever and dishes are packed with flavor from hours of marinating. You leave feeling satisfied, warm and fuzzy like a grandma just fed you a home cooked meal. Capelin 5/5* Bite sized fried fish on a stick. Who wouldn't love that. The fish was plump, meaty and juicy despite the small size. Prawns Skewers 5/5* Salted to perfection with a crispy shell. Shrimps were a nice size. Simple delicious appetizer. Lamb Skewers 5/5* So juicy and tender!! It barely had that gamey taste. I regretted not ordering more. Salted Fish and Pork Clay Pot 5/5* This clay pot had the best balanced taste when eaten together. The saltiness of the fish, fattiness of the pork, and crisp green onions paired well with a heaping spoon of rice for that savory experience. The crispy rice at the bottom was the best part. Preserved Meat Clay Pot 5/5* The Preserved meats were so savory and gave that satisfying mouth feel. They don't skimp out on the meats and you'll have plenty for that good meat to rice ratio. It could use some mustard greens to balance it out though. Eel Clay Pot 4/5* It definitely left a lacking feeling after eating this since the protein to rice ratio was way off. There should have been more protein or veggies to balance out the salty flavor. Next time, I'll be sure to add the egg and sausage for more substance. Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings 5/5* Came out so hot it burned my fingers! It's definitely battered but the batter was so crispy and the salty sweet flavor of the green onions and fried garlic blew me away. Oysters 3/5* Too much garlic for me. Recently, I've been checking out the Freeport Blvd area for authentic Chinese food, and Da Fei Ge is high on my list of new favorite places to dine at. My husband and I just visited last weekend. It is a small establishment, with only 7 tables. We were seated immediately and handed the menu--one to browse, and one to mark our orders on. I had already scoured the various reviews for Da Fei Ge, so we knew what we wanted. We immediately put in our order for a clay pot rice, since it would take about 20 min to cook. We went with the special preserved meat clay pot rice, since we were going to order skewers, and for $9.99 that price was hard to beat. Each skewer order comes with 2 pieces of whatever protein you order, and is so reasonably priced. We were especially excited for the abalone, which came with a mouth-watering garlic chili sauce. We ordered a small variety of skewers, from quail eggs to pork belly to squid. All the skewers were so flavorful and there was extra chili powder if you wanted to add some more. You have the option to mark down if you want it spicy or non-spicy on the ordering sheet. We of course went with the spicy option. The meats were tender and the sauce on the squid was delightful. Da Fei Ge is quiet and cozy, and the majority of patrons are Chinese. The staff speaks Mandarin as well. I also love that you get free cold herbal tea. It's self-serve so you can drink as much as you'd like. It was very refreshing and paired perfectly with our meal. The clay pot rice was delicious! The crispy rice on the bottom was sooo crunchy and there was a good amount of meat. It came with a side of sauce that you pour on right after it's served to your table. You can let it sit or mix right away. We waited for about 15 seconds and then mixed ours. The meat was thinly-sliced, but the ratio of meat to rice was just fine. Honestly, it was the perfect amount of rice to share while having skewers on the side. I noticed a few other tables had ordered the larger size and that would have been too much to finish in one go. Quite honestly, I feel that clay pot rice should be enjoyed at the restaurant and not taken to go. As we enjoyed our meal, I also noticed the staff in the back chopping up various cuts of meat. Presumably this was for the clay pot rice and skewers. I really loved how everything was fresh and made to order here. Nothing beats an authentic experience like this, especially when it's hard to find good clay pot rice and skewers these days. There are about six types of clay pot rice, around $15, with two that are on special for $9.99 for a small - enough for two or three if you are ordering other items, or one with hearty appetite. They make it from scratch - cooking the raw rice and ingredients inside the pot, not just finishing in it, with a nice layer of charred rice as proof. The cucumber salad at this place has been on my mind for the last 4 days. In a desperate attempt to recreate it, I used too much garlic and made a giant mess in my kitchen. So I'm planning my next trip here this week so I can enjoy the amazing cucumber salad (so fresh, crunchy and garlicky), their pepper beef clay pot (sizzling rice at the bottom for the win and big portions), their spicy tofu (umm what?!? So crispy) and their awesome skewers (the pork belly is my favorite). The space is small, so if you're planning on dining in during peak times, you may want a back up or take it to go as they only have a handful of tables inside and a few tables outside. There is parking but it is shared with other business so can get busy. The service is wonderful! The hostess/waitress was very friendly and everything came out relatively quick. The clay pot does take some time (they need to cook up the rice to get that awesome crunchy bottom) so place your order for that first, and then look at the appetizers and skewers as they come out fast. The clay pots were delicious, also pretty good portions for both sizes as well. My favorite was the cucumber salad. It was really cheap for a plate of this, the flavor was so good, and the cucumber was crunchy. I also enjoyed their fried tofu too. It was perfectly spicy and crispy. The restaurant is pretty small inside, so it seemed a little cramped. Its rare to find regional chinese places like this in the Sac area. Being from the Bay and from Orange County, I'm a but snobby when it comes to Chinese food, but this place was definitely on par with the best of them! Its a small hole-in-the-wall place with good ambience in a small plaza with other diverse food options. We went on Friday night and had no wait time. We got two claypot rice (order these right when you come in since they take 20 minutes), a variety of skewers and spicy chicken wings. All were amazing quality! The highlight is definitely the rice which had plenty of flavor and was crispy at the bottom. We will definitely come back again to try other flavors and other skewers. We flew in from San Jose just for this. It's a small shop with ~6 tables inside and a couple outside. They have free sweet chinese tea :-) The skewers are very good overall. My favorite is the pork belly and chicken stomach. The beef and lamb skewers are a bit dry (overcooked). We also tried the lamb kidney (too gamy for me) and oysters (too raw for me). The rice pots are pretty good but not exceptional. Price is not cheap, but reasonable. Overall a good experience. read more

I was craving claypot rice and came around 5pm on a Saturday - there was only one other party here at the time, but an hour later when we were done with our meal the place was pretty busy. The place is relatively small but clean, with a mix of larger tables for groups and smaller ones. I came with a friend who had been before, and we ordered the clay pot rice first since it takes time to get ready. We also got the cucumber salad and an assortment of skewers to eat while waiting. The cucumber salad was crisp, refreshing and super garlicky - perfect to clean your palate between the skewers and the claypot rice, which were relatively oily. We got the quail egg, lamb, corn, gizzard and pork belly skewers - they were all good quality, and there seasonings at each table for you to add as you'd like to the skewers. We got the claypot rice with preserved meat and added on ribs - the rice was nice and crispy, a bit on the oilier side, and the meat was fragrant and flavorful, though I would've preferred a bit more meat given we added on the ribs. I came here before on a weekday and it was mostly empty. The food was good and even though you could tell it was a mostly chinese-speaking restaurant, it wasnt too difficult to order. It was nice enough that I tried to come here on a weekend night and it was packed full of families which is great but probably where I should have thought about it more. We went up to the counter and were told to wait a few minutes. I saw that a large table was clearing up so I didn't mind waiting. During this time a group came up behind us and I thought they were after us. One of the server waved in our general direction after cleaning up and splitting the table, so I thought they were gesturing to us since it has already been 10 minutes of waiting. Wrong, it was to the group behind us. Maybe it was communicated in mandarin that they had a reservation, I'm not sure. I waited for the next empty table, which was also taken by yet another group that magically appeared behind us as if they knew they were in line. I decided to leave after this. My issue is that I looked and talked to the staff multiple times and at no point, did they indicate there was a waitlist, nor did they take my name, or anything about people in front of us. It was really frustrating because being told it would be a few minutes set the wrong expectation. I've been hearing good things about this spot. It's about time I gave it a try. I believe this restaurant is popular for their Chinese style skewers and rice with meat cooked in clay pots so thats what the majority of the things we ate. Do be aware it is a little bit oily but that's nothing to fret about. For the skewers, we went with beef, lamb, pork belly, and chicken gizzards. They all have nice flavor and smoke to it and it wasn't oily or dry. On each table comes with chili powder if you want to add more spice to it. Do be aware the beef was a little salty that day, but overall I still enjoyed everything. Lastly with the clay pot with rice we went with the preserved meat and the beef with ginger and scallions.
