First timer here!! The place is so big and pretty. I love love Love the interior decor! We ordered: Green Beans, Soup Dumplings Xiao Long Bao, Wonton in Chili Oil, Hong Kong style chow mein. I forgot what else we got. But it was a big order for our party of 5. Everything tasted DELICIOUS. I freaking LOVE the wonton in chili oil. I loved it. It tasted so good i wish i got more. I was definitely in a food coma after this. It was just so good.
We ordered the salt&pepper chicken which was crispy and juicy. The chili wonton was good and not spicy. The crab and pork soup dumpling was not as favorable as I thought it would be. The service was quick and everyone was so nice and attentive
Okay sooo I really thought my friend was exaggerating when she said this place easily eat another well known dumpling franchise for her...but uh she proved me wrong pretty easily. We went by on a Sunday around 12:30 and were able to join the yelp wait list as we parked and get a table for 3 easily. Fair warning if you are a larger group and come at peak times, join the waitlist early or be ready to wait a bit! The interior is bright, lively with a ton of bright light and decorations. There is a good amt of seating but let me tell you, it fills up FAST. The menu is EXPANSIVE with tons of options for omnivores and vegetarians alike. I will admit the impossible siu mai grabbed my attention pretty fast because I had never seen a vegetarian siu mai before sooo we had to order it. My friends shared the pork xlbs and we got the garlic green beans and the garlic noodles to share as well! Honestly, it was like being in a flow state between the garlic noodz and the green beans alone; highkey could eat multiple plates of just those two back to back to back l o l The siu mai was also delish but the other two dishes were somehow better. The soy/vinegar and chili oil they give for dipping is so good and hits that perfect note between salty/tangy/spicy. Prices are fair for the quality and I would love to go back and try more of their vegetarian options! I appreciate that this a spot that both vegetarians and their omnivore friends can go~ Have to go back to try their desserts including the egg tarts that sold out!
We arrived 30 minutes before the restaurant opened. A kind gentleman offered us to sit the patio until opening while providing drinks during the wait. That would be a great baseline for their level of service. Once allowed inside we were further greeted by kind faces and attentive staff. We ordered the garlic noodle, beef soup and xiao long bao(pork soup dumplings). We truly enjoyed the garlic noodle as it was the perfect amount of garlic that it didn't make the dish too sharp. The beef noodle soup broth was really flavorful, some of the beef pieces were a little too fatty but definitely doesn't ruin the dish. The dumplings were good as well paired nicely with the side sauces. We were able to see a number of families and those on dates gather for an early dinner. Definitely will come back to try a few other menu options. Last but not least Yingmei was a true delight as our server.
Over priced and UNDER quality food. 2 for lunch cost $80 at this place only 1 lemonade drink (no alcohol). I had water. As such, I was horrified by the check. What is going on with the pricing? Is this REALLY inflation or is it price gouging customers? Either way, a huge disappointment. Food was average, nothing special...did not match menu photos. Flavors bland. There needs to be price caps on lunch. It used to be easy to find lunch dishes in the $10 range. Now, hold onto your fork, friends, and check your wallet at the door!
I absolutely love this place! We have gone here many times and keep coming back for the pork soup dumpling & green beans. They have so many other good food items. We've had the duck here and enjoyed that as well. I like that they have a vegan item option , but this could be discouraging for vegans considering there's ducks hanging as soon as you walk in LOL. But overall the vibes are so cute with all the light up neon signs. When they get busy customer service is a little slow, but none the less we will continue to come! Also, portions for dishes like chow fun & rice are huge.
Journey to the dumpling is such an amazing family friendly spot for dumpling lovers. The staff is kind and the food came out in small rounds. I would come here again and again just due to the price and the taste of everything. My favorite was the salt and pepper calamari, but the steak and potatoes are phenomenal!
We visited on a Friday at 6:30pm. Luckily, we had put our name on the waitlist 45 minutes beforehand because the line was very long. We only waited about 10 minutes, but if we had not used the waitlist, I think it would've been over an hour. We ordered the Xiao Long Bao, Vegetable dumplings, garlic noodles, Ha Cao and spring onion pancake. All the food was very good. The Xiao long Bao were not as good when they cooled down because the skin thickened up so make sure you eat them when they're hot. The garlic noodles had a good garlic flavor to them. The outstanding dish was the vegetable dumplings. They were filled with mushrooms. When I visit again, I will definitely be ordering these. Service was friendly. We had a nice night out.
To-go order of Singapore Noodles, approx $18. Tasty dish, Plenty of shrimp and pork with veggies and curry noodles. Helpful, pleasant staff.
I'm so happy that I don't have to go all the way to Elk Grove for Journey to the Dumpling. I've been a fan for many years at their Elk Grove location. I often worry when I go to second locations of great restaurants because I wonder if it will be as good as the original. Journey to the dumpling in Midtown did not disappoint. We came on a random Tuesday and it was packed. We had the beef chow fun, eggplant with flounder, brussels sprouts, and beef chow fun. The last dish is our favorite at Elk Grove and the quality was just as good. The only dish we didn't like was the flounder which was too salty to our liking. Service was good. We had a team of folks taking care of us. However, we still had to flag down staff down for drink refills, boxes and the check. It was a busy night so It was understandable. Parking can be a challenge depending on when and what time you get there. Since it was a Tuesday, we got a great spot nearby. I am eager for more meals here especially since they're closer to home.
Late Post - Visit was 1.29.26 .. Good - food - for the love of dumplings - their vegan options are also great and big servings, love their tofu and pan fried noodles. The place is clean and inviting to the eyes. Here's something to work on - service - not sure if just the server (lady) there was a mistake on the orders made - she admitted it and offered but not clarified that the offer to serve was still charged to the card, until we verified the receipts... And she after explaining, mentioned something like " next time, you need to tell us if you're taking it.." sort of consuming it like a teacher preaching to a student. We were shocked, after a bunch of orders we did!
I appreciate finding a good tasting vegan friendly Chinese restaurant. I brought guest to here since it's Sacramento restaurant. There is a small free 1 hr street parking section near, but parking might be slightly hard to find (and having time limit, it's not a sit down for long kind of place). It worked for us since we wanted to explore old Sac and they served pretty quickly even with many customers. One less star since it's pretty expensive for Chinese food but great place to treat guests and being near old Sac.
Downtown parking is always a pain cause you have to pay, but this day we went, there were plenty of parking. Upon walking to the restaurant, we were greeted properly, the decor was what was expected, modern with a reflection of the food that was going to be served. The food was very good, nice clean, plated just perfectly to complement the taste. The garlic green beans were cooked perfectly, light, somewhat garlicky, and crisp. The cucumber salad was very refreshing, crispy, tasty, with peanuts, and cilantro. The wonton in spicy oil was great, fresh tasting, perfectly cooked, and good texture. The Xiao Long Bao is a definite try, cannot NOT order this if you go here. It's a must try. I'm looking forward to going back to try the Biang Biang Noodle Soup. Their side sauce definitely make everything better if you're not satisfied with just the dishes themselves.

Love the interior design of this place. There is a huge menu selection and portions are big! Did family style and ended up with lots of leftovers. I ordered pork soup dumplings, green beans, friend shrimp ball, black bean noodles, and beef rolls. Food was great. I would come back to try the other dishes. Parking here isn't too bad. If it's a busy day, parking would be hard. read more

Wow! So so yummy! An excellent dim sum place with fantastic vegan options. We got the seasonable veggies in a black bean sauce (incredible), mushroom bao (they looked like mushrooms!), and impossible meat dumplings. All were great, but I especially loved the seasonal veggies and the dumplings. We shared all three plates, and still had some veggies left over to bring home. Service was fast & attentive, even though they were pretty busy. They had a range of vegan options, and I wish we'd been able to try more! Highly recommended. read more
Overall, good experience. All of the food was delicious (or I was just really hungry), service was decent, and the facility was clean. We had a reservation for a Friday night right at the beginning of what I would consider dinnertime. It was good that we did because there was already a crowd of people waiting outside for a table. We were sat fairly quickly, but the follow-up service lagged a bit. It was understandable though considering how many tables I'm sure our server was tending to. Food is all family style, which was perfect for our party of six. We initially ordered seven dishes and thought we would be done after that but enjoyed the food so much we added three more. Starting with the veggie dishes, the green beans and seasonal veggies came in strong with some bold flavors. It's the level where the smell can come off a bit funky, but the taste is oh so good. The garlic noodles are a bit heavy, so while they were delicious, I wouldn't recommend starting with that if you have ambitions for the rest of the menu. I didn't try the duck (not a huge duck fan) but my friends seemed to really enjoy using it to build wraps (deconstructed dumplings?). The potstickers had a unique presentation that requires you to break them apart. While I'm sure they aren't any more or less freshly cooked, that part of the experience made them feel more so. I don't have anything particular I'd like to say about the dumplings or honey walnut shrimp other than they were quintessentially those dishes. The wings came out super-hot, but once I got past that I could enjoy the crispy exterior and moist interior. For the pork buns, I highly recommend poking holes in them first so they can cool down and there's less pressure when you bite into it (some of the filling shot out and got on my shorts). The green onion pancake was good too with a bigger portion than I was expecting, but we probably could've gone without it considering how much flavor the rest of the meal had. Would come again, need to let my food cool down next time, and must avoid ordering with my stomach. read more
This is definitely a great spot. However, this is not an inexpensive spot. I think I posted the prices of each dish next to the photo, long story, short for an appetizer, an entrée, and some baos, a beer and a Martinelli's we got out for lunch at $75 which is simply not sustainable. it's a great spot. If you want one dish, the ambience is clean, a bit sterile. The staff was very friendly. I just think there are less expensive options that will satisfy your need for Chinese. Their menu is extensive however, and I would say they probably have a lot of dishes that no one else does. read more
This restaurant has a fun ambiance and delicious food! The service was quick and space was clean. It is a bit pricey for some of the menu items compared to other similar spots in the area. However, the beautiful, large pot of tea for $2 was amazing! If you're looking for great Chinese with a fun ambiance this is for you! read more

Journey to Dumpling provides big portions with solid Chinese food to match. On a recent trip to Sacramento, I had heard several people I follow on Instagram talk about Journey to the Dumpling so I was naturally curious to check it out. They have two locations: one in Elk Grove and one here in Sacramento. This location was pretty conveniently located in the Sacramento downtown area. It is spacious with plenty of seating yet the whole place was packed. Definitely a good sign! For an early Saturday dinner (around 5:00 PM), there was a slight wait but it was not too long before we got seated. They have a huge selection of typical Chinese restaurant fair but given the name did end up getting two dumpling dishes. Here is what we ordered: Beef Roll (4/5): Huge! These were filled with a good amount of beef with crispy cucumber with some cilantro and green onion to add a bit of texture and freshness. The wrap was warm and toasted. I wish there was a little bit more flavor to the beef, but I would get again. Xiao Long Bao (4.5/5): Also huge! They had a nice soupy center that was super comforting. If I come back, would definitely get this again. Pork Dumpling Noodle Soup (3/5): Compared to the others, this was a let down. The soup was on the bland side and the dumplings also were not as flavorful as the xiao long bao. Would not get again. In terms of service, they were pretty fast and efficient despite how busy it was. In terms of parking, it does appear like there is some street parking available, but may need to circle around before finding a spot. Overall, Journey to the Dumpling has great food worth checking out if you are in the midtown area. read more
I've been to the Elk Grove location multiple times, but this is my second time at this location, been a while since my first. Parking is now free for customers, there's a sign with QR code at the front to get a free pass. We were seated right away around 11:45 am on a Saturday afternoon, but shortly after that, the restaurant was filled. Food: 1) Half order of salt & pepper tofu with extra seasoning: so delicious! I guaranteed this is the best place to get this. I do recommend getting extra seasoning for more flavor. 2) Wontons in chili oil: a hard skip, I'm not sure what happened to this dish because I used to get it a lot. Now, it is so bland and not spicy at all. 3) Spicy beef noodle soup: I would also skip on this dish. The flavor is there, but it's on the blander side. The noodles are so good and chewy, but there's no flavor. The only thing I liked in this dish was the beef. It also wasn't spicy at all. 4) Chow Mein with steak cubes: a must get! The noodles are so perfectly chewy, and everything complements each other so well. Super flavorful compared to the other dishes. This is my new favorite and I will definitely be back for this! Service: The staff are great. They work as a team, bringing out food, and clearing table. They are all very outgoing. read more
A very solid 4 1/2 stars. I had wanted to come here for sometime, but I had forgotten about it, until I saw it mentioned on Yelp today. I was in town, so I decided to head over to Midtown for lunch. If you are going to check in on the Yelp app, watch the location. I checked in, but when I got to the restaurant, I wasn't on the list. It turns out I accidentally checked into their elk Grove location. They were able to get me right in, but not too long after I got there, there were more people waiting to get into the restaurant. Parking is primarily street parking, street parking is relatively inexpensive, but do remember that Sacramento enforces parking every day of the year, including Sundays and holidays. There is also a garage just around the corner from the restaurant, but I'm not sure what they charge for parking. They do offer both indoor seating, and a small outdoor seating section. I come in, and I like the vibe of the restaurant. Bright and airy, with Chinese decorations on the walls. The menu is extremely large. Everything from dumplings, as is their name, rice dishes,soups, noodles, and other items as well. From the appetizer menu, I chose the Chinese beef burgers, and then from the main menu, I was interested in the eggplant with flounder. However, there was one word... "Szechuan." I asked if they could make it non-spicy, and she said no problem. The food comes, and it's very large portions. The beef burgers, were made with a shredded beef, that had so much flavor to it. I'm not sure what the marinade or spices were, but it just had such a wonderful flavor. It also had scallions, which provided a nice pop of freshness, as well as a little crunch. The Chinese style buns were perfect for the Dish. The eggplant with flounder was very good. It did not come with rice. If you want rice, you have to order it separately. I didn't think about that, I do know that some places bring rice, some places don't. It was still extremely good. The eggplant was tender and flavorful, and the flounder was just melt-in-your- mouth tender. It was mild, just a little bit sweet, and it also took on the flavor of the sauce. The sauce was just the right consistency, and it also had a very complex flavor. The dish was very good. The only reason I'm taking off a half star, is because it was a bit oily. I'm not sure where the oil came from, but it was just oily enough that I noticed it. I could feel it on my lips a little bit The dish was still very good. There was enough food, that I had enough to take Home for two more meals. I also had a sweet tea, which was very good, and the price for two items and a sweet tea was very reasonable for what I got, plus, they also offer a military/veterans discount. Had a festive holiday feast at Journey to the Dumpling and it is as good as I expected. The bright neon signs and the hustle and bustle of the restaurant creates an authentic dim sum atmosphere. Arrived on a rainy evening, with people waiting outside. I was nervous thinking the wait would be long, but I was seated right away! Clean tables, clean chairs and clean menus. Metal cups and plastic chop sticks await on the table, along with napkins. Ordering was easy and the wait staff is fast and efficient. My favorite dishes were the Beef Chow Fun with black bean sauce, the Peking spare ribs, and shrimp siu mai. The chicken and ginger dumplings were also delicious! I would definitely come back soon, so good and highly recommend. read more

FYI dogs are allowed on the patio Yelp info is incorrect and I submitted a correction request. I try every dumpling place I can get to but Journey To The Dumpling is still the best by far. We ordered Garlic Green beans, Har Gow, Pork XLB, Siu mei, custards, and Steak Chow Fun. Everything we had was hands down the best in Sacramento. Midtown's food was actually better than the Elk Grove location. Thank You for being so good JTD! read more
Ok so I was really excited to try this place. The atmosphere is amazing, really friendly and helpful staff, and the food looks amazing. The chili oil is awesome- tangy from the fermented bean paste, salty and spicy. We ordered the Wontons with chili oil, Roujimou burger, Garlic Noodles with Shrimp and the Eggplant with Flounder. The eggplant was the biggest star and was mind blowingly good, but the rou burger was at the opposite end of the spectrum and just ho hum and kinda bland. The dumplings were good but needed a little more salt and sweet. Shrimp noodles were good, but were under seasoned and we added a little sauce from the eggplant to bring it up a notch. After thinking about why the difference in dishes, I want to say it is more a consistency in execution issue because my Shirley Temple had almost no syrup in the first one, but the second was great. For sure you should try it and if they get all the dishes seasoned consistently, this would be a 5 star place. read more
We went here for our work holiday lunch and it was really good. We have different dietary preferences but they have a lot of dishes to meet everyone's taste. The food came out quickly and steaming hot - even for a big group. Service was friendly and accommodated our various group picture requests. :) read more
Paid Street parking only. We went on Sunday and they open at 4pm. We got there at 3:45 and people were waiting. At soon as they open, they were packed. We weren't that hungry so we only got two items. The porridge and soup dumplings. Both were very favorable. Decor is pretty and detailed. Average noise level. The vibe of the restaurant was lively, decor was amazing, and staff were attentive and kind. The best thing we ordered was definitely the salt and pepper tofu. The rest of the food was just okay but that may be because we ordered dishes with chicken. read more
One of my favorite places for vegan friendly dim sum, and the only place I know of around here offering vegan siu mai! Service can be kinda hectic, but as long as you arrive early and/or put in a reservation (there's a yelp option for this lol would you believe I've still never used this yelp function?), your journey to scrumptious eats will happen. We like to hit up Benny's to pregame while we wait for a table to open up. The ambiance is striking. Good for the instabook or whatever you have. Bright neon lights in gold and red, crimson lanterns, and cozy booths. It's a very cool look to go with great eats. Prices are kinda steep but I think that's ok for the quality of the food. Dishes are made to share family style. We usually pick an appetizer and main to share. Or two dim sum items. Plus whatever meat thing my love wants to have to himself. My favorite items on the menu are the vegan siu mai with impossible pork, mushroom baos, impossible dumpling soup, impossible dumplings, vegetarian green dumplings (tofu, egg, black mushroom, cilantro with spinach wrapper), vegan dumplings (fennel, kale, mushroom), and the veggie egg rolls. The mushroom bao is the star with its chopped king oyster, white mushroom, shiitake mushroom, and onion filling. Sooooooo mouth-watering. I crave them. There's also all kinds of things for meat eaters to have, or for your friend who isn't much into Chinese cuisine. You can order fries, steak n taters, curry prawns, and lots of different soups if that's what you're in the mood for. They have tan tan men with egg noodles, rice and noodle dishes, and a separate veggie menu to choose from. For dessert they have ice cream, egg tarts, and sesame balls, but I've always been too stuffed to order any. Yuzu, sake, wine, beer, and NA beverages are available. Such a crazy menu. I recommend looking at it before coming so you know what you're in the mood for. There's still so many more dishes I would love to try. Those mushroom baos, vegan dumpling soup, and impossible pork siu mai are sure incredible though, wow. Makes me overlook the sometimes chaotic ! but patient and friendly! service. Just give yourself plenty of time if you plan to eat here and it'll be great. Come hungry. They do have a to go option and I also recommend that, but same deal, give it time. The online ordering interface needs work though. Choosing which soup and broth online is a little annoying, so I prefer calling an order in. Parking: the usual midtown scene, but due to the old sac bee building being vacant, there's usually metered parking along Q street after you pass 21st. Showed up with a friend for dinner on a weeknight. There was a line to be seated, but it went quickly. My friend and I ordered three dishes - the vegetarian egg rolls, the cucumber salad, and the vegetarian chow mein. I also got an order of the Thai tea. Something I liked about the tea was that it was very customizable. Our server informed me that if it was not sweet enough or strong enough for me, then she could go and fix it, which I had never experienced before. The cucumber salad and chow mein were both super delicious, with fresh vegetables and a good balance of flavor that kept it from getting boring. However, the egg rolls were a little disappointing since they did not have much flavor and were a bit bland. The restaurant has a lot to look at and lots of flashing lights, so I would recommend being aware of that if you are sensitive to light or noise. Overall, a very fun experience! read more
I recently ate at here for a friends party and we had a wonderful time! The food was amazing. They had a large menu with a selection of different dumplings and entrees to choose from including full ducks that they prepare daily. The food did take longer than expected to come out (one of our party members didn't get his food until about halfway through dinner) but they were very busy and there were a lot of us so that was to be expected. Just an all around incredible meal. Came for lunch with a buddy and ordered a ton of food. Honey walnut shrimp, chicken chow fun, Peking spare ribs, bbq pork Baos, and siu mai. I will admit, the pork Baos weren't what I expected, though still good! (I'm still on the hunt for best bbq pork boas in sac). Everything was just perfect. The portions were large and the food was fresh and so flavorful. The chow fun did not skimp on the meat which was also great. I'd have to say this is far and away some of the best Chinese food I've had in Sacramento. I had been wanting to go for so long in Elk Grove and when they opened a spot in midtown I finally made it (I know they've been open for a while). I would 1000% come back, the service was quick, the restaurant was clean (I know it's brand new, but nice they keep it so clean). If you like Chinese food then you have to come. Fish with eggplant 3/5 - this was good but it was pretty salty so we had to order white rice to eat it with. Even eating the fish and eggplant with garlic noodles, it was too saucy and salty Pan fried bao 4/5 - these were pretty good and they came out super hot. Juice was good but the skin of the buns were a bit too thick in my opinion. There was corn inside which was new for me but it gave it a nice sweetness that I enjoyed Garlic noodles with beef 3/5 - this was just ok. Garlic noodles were overcooked so it was too soft. Do people get traumatized for sitting in the area with the dead roasted ducks hanging in the clear window? Why did you have to sit there? Why is the restaurant showcasing this - to gross people out? Bad behavior?
That is very typical for an Asian restaurant. You go to Chinatown San Francisco, or any other such neighborhood, and you will see it everywhere. If it makes you uncomfortable, sit elsewhere.
Is there any non pork or halal options? And do they cross contaminate the other meats with pork?
They have several plant based options including beyond pork. I do not know what if any items are halal. I do not know about the cross contamination but I would hope not for plant-based items.
Are there gluten free options?
Yes, but only vegetable dishes (green beans, mixed veggies).
Do you do separate checks for large parties?
Yes, you can ask your server about splitting the check before you order.
How's the parking like in the evening?
Free parking after 6pm on the metered one within the vicinity. Or otherwise, park in a public parking garage and call Uber/lyft to dine in. Same like all restaurants within midtown where most don't have a parking lot but just metered street parking.
When will the patio be open for seating and are dogs allowed?
Hi Alisa! Unfortunately, we won't be opening our patio until at least spring time and when we do, dogs will be more than welcome!
