Visiting from Seattle and thought Chinese food in Montana little hesitant but we were very surprised. We started with "C" dinner combo egg drop soup egg rolls BBQ pork. Mains were almond chicken deep fried prawns sweet and sour pork bbq pork fried rice stir fried vegetables with beef. Eggs rolls are delicious and I'm fairly certain made in house. Chow Mein was true Hong Kong style! Almond chicken had a rich flavour. Place is very popular with locals it seems everyone knows everyone Service was busy wait staff attentive. We ordered crab rangoons, pork low mein and general chicken. We got the rangoons but they had no crab in them. Next came some spaghetti with pieces of pork in it. Why use spaghetti or vermicelli noodles? No veggies. Not much flavor. She brought the general chicken out. We used to go here regularly with our large family, but we just can't afford to eat here anymore as the prices have reached "ridiculous" levels. We've watched it creep up over the years, but now it's just a ripoff. It's mediocre Chinese food at best, and every dish on the menu is practically $20 each. The portions are average to on the smaller side. The last thing I want to see paying these prices is dry sweet an sour pork because I was skimped 5 cents on the sauce. This place used to be my favorite chinese place in missoula! But tonight is the last time i eat here! Just spent $125 for some bland flavorless slop. The fried rice was just white rice with a few pieces of pork in it. The lo mein which use to be my favorite thing to order tasted like ramen noodles with no flavor pack! So gross. China Garden used to be really good but our order we had tonight was poor. We had 2 orders of sweet and sour pork and one order of sweet and sour chicken and only received one half of a container of sauce. Barely enough for one order. The pork lo mein didn't taste like it was seasoned at all and the same was true of the pork fried rice. We ended up throwing most of it away. We paid over $100 for food that was inedible. I am accustomed to Americanized Asian food. The food itself was decent but highly overpriced for the quality of food. $17/per person is pretty steep for food of this caliber. This is the first Asian buffet that I've seen serve food on styrofoam plates. The forks were metal. The tables were bare. None of the usual accoutrements- soy sauce, salt and pepper were in packets. I previously lived in Helena, Montana for 30 years and the Chinese food was fantastic. This is freaking awful! The crab puffs are all puff and no crab. ALL SHRIMP PRODUCTS ARE NOT DEVEINED. EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE SEASONED AND BREADED. It's pointless to season and bread if the legs and veins are still intact. I would pay more if they would just do the same. Mostly? This is by far, the worst Chinese food I have ever had the misfortune of consuming. As a former Food Network employee and Events Director from Napa, I've had tremendous experience in food and hospitality. I understand the difficulties we are facing in times when staffing is a challenge and food costs are increasing. There is no explanation for the unreasonable cost of the poor quality of food and service we received. The pot stickers were undercooked, stuck together, and flat, so it was evident that they were previously frozen and not handmade. Both were cold when we got them so probably sat while the other entrees were being prepared. The general tsao chicken was also undercooked and over breaded. The beef in the lo menu was gray and dried out while the lo mein noodles were stuck together. The fried rice had little flavor to it. $72 for these dishes total. We normally spend around $50 with tip for the same in CA. Did not provide soy sauce or utensils. PFortune cookies are an extra $1 if you want them. Wow. This is not a high end place. It's in a run down strip mall with tiny parking spots and the restaurant needs a massive face lift. I was told my food would take 25 minutes but it was closer to 35. Multiple parties were helped before me and provided with silverware, sauces and fortune cookies. When I inquired about my order, I was given attitude by staff. Completely uncalled for. I show a lot of grace given I worked in hospitality and I know customers can be seemingly rude to people who work in the industry. But this place is just flat out terrible. Average food at best. It's probably good for montana, but that's a low bar. The server was great, very friendly, and very attentive. The hostess who took our check, however? Might be one of the rudest people I've ever encountered. We literally just asked for chili oil for our leftovers, and you'd have thought I'd asked for her firstborn or to pay my mortgage. She actually thru the container at me and then shoved the CC across the counter at me. Her childish and HIGHLY unprofessional behavior didn't affect my gratuity for the server. But we spent (for 2 of us) $110.00 on average food and then catch the wicked which of Zootown on our way out. I'll never go back. Hostess is a terrible example of customer service. read more

Best Chinese food in Missoula. Have tried several dishes on multiple occasions, and always good. Lots of vegetables (onions, cabbage, etc.), meat is good (not deep fried, except is certain dishes), not too greasy (but enough oil that it is a little bit oily and tastes good). Spicy dishes have some heat but not too much. Overall good experience. However, as others have noted, the dishes have relatively little amount of meat, and the prices are extremely high. For the amount of meat in each dish, I would generally expect to pay somewhere around $12 per dish rather than the $18 per dish that they charge. The food is really more like vegetarian Chinese with a little bit of meat added for protein. If you like veggies (which I do), and don't mind paying the high prices, this is a pretty good spot especially given the lack of other options in Missoula. read more

High price, bad food. I got an order to go with my wife. From the start in the packaging it had an odd smell and once we got home to eat it the smell got worse. My wife got the shrimp fried rice which smelled like it was picked up off of a barn floor and tasted exactly like it smelled. I got the sesame chicken which was wet, and not just from the sauce. It tasted very bland and had a weird after taste to it. We paid $36 (plus tip) for these two things and the food was just awful. Came here for lunch while visiting family in Missoula. Food and experience were definitely not great, so won't revisit. Details below: Service & Menu: 1.5/5. I came here about 11:30 and it was moderately busy but was seated right away which was good. My waitress was having an off day as was apparent on her face, but that's o.k. we all have those. I was excited for a lunch special I had seen online but when seated I found out that they were no longer allowing the lunch specials. Why??? Is this temporary? This was really the whole reason I came. They were not running the lunch special but you did have the option of one of two combos. I ordered the combo with sweet and sour pork, pork fried rice and chow mein and soup for $12. Not too bad a deal. Waitress asked what type of soup and I asked for wonton. She said no problem. About a minute later she brought me egg drop soup (which was quick, just not the right order). About 5-6 minutes later I was finally able to get her attention to switch the soups. The only other time I saw her was when she brought my plate with the lunch combo. She was nowhere to be seen again and I had to get the check and pay with a different waitress unfortunately. The other waitress seemed fantastic though. Food: 2.5/5. Food was hit or miss so I think it depends on what you get. The wonton soup was delicious and I would order again. The sweet and sour pork was good, very americanized but this place doesn't hide that they are americanizing their dishes. Pork fried rice was also fine. Not great but o.k. The real negative was the chow mein which was AWFUL! I really cannot understand this dish they served as part of the combo. It was the main part of the combo and covered about half the plate so it really soured the rest of the experience since to me it was inedible. It looks like the chow mein at this restaurant started with some chow mein noddles (the crispy kind you buy at the store) on the bottom layer and then a tiny amount of bean sprouts with the tiniest amount of pork. Then the whole dish is COVERED in copious amounts of celery. Like at first I thought they just brought me a plate of chopped celery. SO...MUCH...Celery. It was so unappetizing and dreadful. All together, having to order off of the combination specials was disheartening as I would have never ordered that awful chow mein otherwise and the experience would have been different. read more

A Missoula staple. China Garden has been here for 20+ years and the consistency is amazing. As a child, this was my favorite Chinese restaurant. Coming back here some 15 years later, it doesn't dissapoint! Service is wonderful. We we're served by one of the owners I think. He was really funny and entertaining. Dressed in a nice Asian shirt with Mandarin collar. The restaurant has been newly rennovated and is quite classy. There is a lot of room for banquets and large groups. Food was just as I had remembered. Perfectly fried pieces of battered chicken and pork, dipped in either an Almond Gravy (Almond Chicken) or a gooey Sweet N Sour. We chose individual combo plates but I think the best deal is actually the Family Meals. Plenty of Chinese-American food.
