I grew up eating 'the good stuff' ... opined not being able to find anything close in Los Angeles and have tried no less than a half dozen mediocre and not worth it Chinese restaurants since spending some time in RI. Seven Moons is the closest I've found to what I grew up eating. That is to say ... I am not looking for quality, freshness or organic anything when I am about to tear into some white cartons of Chinese food. I don't care if it's frozen, de-thawed and due to the Chinese writing on the cardboard boxes in the back, I can only imagine what wet market horrors the food was derived from. However,.if it tastes good and nostalgic, I am happy, despite the fact that if caught in China, the shrimp under the breading may glow in the dark or have multiple heads. Here is my box score: - Crab Rangoons ... 10 out of 10. This is where the wheels usually come off on Chinese restaurants. Not enough filling ... too much garlic ... bland taste ... funny shapes. These are exactly what you want in a crab Rangood. Triangles of crispy golden brown fried dough with sweet cream cheese filling. A touch of crab flavour ... but mostly sweet and slightly garlicy. I've not had better in RI and only Yong Shing in MA can compare. - Chicken Fingers ... 8.5 out of 10. Could have been a little plumper with more white meat inside. However the rice flour breading is the star of the show. Almost a tempura breading it's so light and airy. They had a good flavour and were perfectly complimented by duck sauce. A tad on the greasy side but I think this was an anomaly and the person taking them out of the frier probably forget to dab the grease off. - Beef Teriyaki ... 8.5 out of 10. A little fatty ... and it's a bit skimpy that the pu pu platter only comes with one of them. (Who likes Chicken Teriyaki?) The star of the show is the marinade. It's very sweet but also has a little soy sauce taste to it. Umami for sure ... it reminds me of the extreme favour of the ones we grew up eating in the 80's with slightly charred edges but juicy beef. - Egg Roll ... 5 out of 10 In fairness, eggroll quality has dropped everywhere lately. It used to be there was smoky BBQ pork inside. Now, mostly cabbage. Kind of bland. I'd eat it with hot mustard, if they actually gave me any (more on this later) ... but kind of a waste of calories. - Spring Roll ... 1 out of 5 This item should exit the menu ... it's nasty. Slimy old-tasting Bok Choy or cabbage inside and a bland, too thick wrapper..I don't know anyone who would want both an egg roll and spring roll in a pu pu platter. They are pretty accommodating with substitutions, so not a huge issue ... I'll know to swap it out for more chicken fingers or crab Rangoon next time. - BBQ pork strips ... 4 out of 10 I got more small pieces vs. strips. They almost looked like bacon bits. Surprisingly different than the beef teriyaki, the marinade did these no favors as it was bland and not the sweet and smoky combo of flavors that I am used to. Also swimming in grease. They could do much better on these ... maybe I got the end of the night batch of almost gone pork strips. Sauces ... They forgot to give me hot mustard. This may be unforgivable other places ... but since the crab Rangoon were so good, I'll let it slide. The duck sauce was what you'd get anywhere else. The pu pu platter for one set me back $14.25. Most of the combo meals were around $15. Not a bad value given these insanely frustrating inflationary times we live in. I really wanted to try the pan fried Peking Ravioli but at $12/appetizer, I didn't. Next time I'll invite someone over and do the crab Rangoon, chicken fingers, beef teriyaki and Peking ravioli to split. I am so happy to find a spot that serves great crab Rangoon and chicken fingers. Even if a lot of the other stuff is less than ideal ... 5 stars because I thought good Chinese food doesn't exist in RI.

Turns out, no spot at all, its in a hidden location inside the Midtown Oyster Bar, and they're doing takeout right from the Midtown Oyster hostess stand. I'm not kidding about the hidden part. There is no signage. No menus. No order window. Not one thing. You can order online, or by phone, and you need to ask the hostess for your food when you arrive. The whole operation has only been open for a week now, and there are a couple of bugs. Including the online menu not rendering correctly, the online orders not being announced to the hostess and staff, the online and telephone wait times being entirely different, and an extended wait for food. Not one of these is super surprising, its all brand new, there are bound to be bumps in the road. The good news, the food was pretty darn good. Even better, its not really anything like the Chinese take-out you might be use to. First off, everything was really fresh. Fresh produce, and handmade dishes are not exactly commonplace with this kind of menu. To see it here was a welcome delight. Especially good were the hand crimped Pork Dumplings. The steamed dough wrapper was soft and tender, the pork filling seasoned and mixed with crisp bright greens. The Szechuan Chili Sauce was so tart and delicious that I put the cap back on the remainder, and saved it in my fridge. Similarly, a new take on Egg Rolls, with Sausage and Mushroom so utterly successful. The crispy fried shell holding in a earthy, rich, umami bomb and the sauce a piquant spice. I didn't love everything, an order of the Pork Fried Rice felt a little bit like they had thrown everthing but the kitchen sink in, and forgot to add the rice. The flavors muddled together, kind of mushy and not great. I go and wait outside, mind you it is raining out. I start talking to some of the others waiting who were telling me that they has pick up times for 7pm and it was now almost 8pm and they were still waiting for their food. This is not looking good. I stand outside waiting till around 9:10pm when I see them bring some bags up to the host area, and I decided to take it upon myself to see if it is my bag since the host was nowhere to be found. One was mine so I took it and left. No offer for compensation or anything, not even a sorry your order took so long. From the time I ordered till the time I got my food was 3 hours and 10 minutes... and an 1 hour and 25 minutes of that time was spent waiting in the cold rain. Not cool. Now on to the food. The food itself was pretty good. Not a three hour wait good, but definitely better than your average Chinese food. We loved the shirmp wonton soup. The broth was amazing and had so much flavor to it. I could have had that on its own. Our other favorite was the General Thames Chicken. The flavor was great and definitely different than any other Chinese food I've had before. I will say they could be a little more generous with the side portion of rice they provide. It was very small for two people sharing the dish (this was not the combo platter). The wings and the lo mein were good, probably a step up from your typical Chinese takeout spot.
