What can I say - I've been going to Taste of china since the beginning when I was 5 with my parents. They've moved locations from Main Street EG to another spot to now here where they've been for years. Mindy and family are a staple to this establishment. We live 2,500 miles away now and no matter how long or short the stay is in Rhode Island - it's always on our list to go without fail. Chinese like this is hard to come by - it's the real deal Americanized Chinese food we all dream about and seldom find - it's the place we use to compare any place we go wherever we are in the country. Went here for first time and had off -menu soup- chicken tang mein because I had seen that it was a winner-that was no lie. Noodles tasted homemade + perfectly cooked, as were fresh vegetables. Broth was fragrant, & chicken perfectly velveted. Great dish if you have cold or flu. I saw too late that you can also Oder it with other proteins: I will try beef tang mein next time. Chili sauce is available so ask for some. Partner enjoyed his sweet and sour shrimp. Note that it is deep-fried shrimp with just rice and sauce on the side. Shrimp tasted fresh. Fried pork dumplings were also very nicely seasoned -subtle hit of ginger. Afraid I can't recommend egg rolls -no protein that I could detect. Just cabbage & sprouts (?) in small wrap. It is difficult to write a negative review for any business, but especially one that you have chosen as your go-to for many years. We depend upon the opinions of others when making our choices for so many things... we have to these days! The past 3 times we have ordered from Taste of China have NOT been a good experience; the food has been less than quality and certainly HAD to be noticeable by whomever cooked/prepared it - and whomever packaged it. Our pupu platter items were ALL so deeply fried that such were like ROCKS. There was not one portion that we could eat or enjoy. Nada. None. The beef Lomein (sp) had, and I did count, 3 peapods, a few carrots, 3 strips of peppers and that was it. The general tsaos was tasty as it most often is, but was packed so poorly that it had leaked into the bag over other things and, well, that was a mess. We are sad to have to make the choice NOT to order from Taste of China from hereon. We will miss the friendly owners and the quiet enjoyed when we eat inside, rather than take-out at home. Overall good Chinese takeout. Always piping hot. Portions seem a little smaller post Covid though. Teriyaki beef is always tender as are the bbq boneless spare ribs. Wonton soup is very good. My only disappointment is the crab rangoons. There was barely a trace of filling in them. This is the second time this has happened to us. While it won't stop us from visiting we just won't order them again which is unfortunate because they used to be our favorite rangoons. read more

I really want to like this place. The owners are very nice and from NYC Chinatown. Food is tasty and they will serve, if given advanced notice, more authentic Chinese dishes for special occasions. Reasons why I am disappointed: Take out time is always late. late by 40-1hr. Just a couple orders, it shouldn't take that long and if it does you need to tell the customer when they are ordering. I've been coming here since they moved from there location in North Kingstown. Over that time I've tried most of the items on the menu and haven't been disappointed yet. As far as Chinese food goes in the area they are definitely the top spot! The owners are very nice and always very accommodating. The inside of the restaurant is very clean. We love taste of China! The woman is so friendly in person and seems to remember me (doesn't seem it on the phone, but she's just in a rush.) Like some of the other reviewers, i've visited Taste of China for lunches and take-outs over the years when they were in North Kingstown and now in Exeter. The owners are friendly and personable and i've seen their children grow up from babies to teenagers! The food is typical American Chinese fare, nothing super special, but IMO it is a little better than most of this type: the wonton soup has a good broth, the Tung Ting Lake shrimp is reasonably good, and our kids enjoy their chicken lo mein and pork fried rice. A reliable staple for Chinese take-out whenever you're too tired to cook or too busy. However, what makes it special to me - other than nostalgia and loyalty - is their off-menu items; they're sometimes willing to make special requests for you. In particular, they have a great off-menu noodle soup dish: Chicken Tang Mein (also can make with shrimp, beef, etc). This alone is worth the visit! Big, hot, brimming bowl full of flavorful broth, a generous amount of sliced vegetables, noodles, and tender chicken breast. Garnish this with hot pepper oil (layou) to your taste (I happen to like a lot) and this becomes a heavenly fiery and filling meal. A bowl of this on a cold winter's day will give you plenty of cheer! I always need extra napkins to tuck into my shirt, otherwise it will become covered with soup stains. read more

Considering that there is a huge lack of good restaurants in North Kingstown, this Chinese restaurant is an example of how one should operate. Being in North Kingstown definitely has its pluses and minuses. A big minus is the fact that I have a hard time finding places to eat. My fiancee and I were in the mood for Chinese, but Seven Moons has been less than spectacular lately, and Kon has been getting a bit stale. Enter Taste of China. The first time I called here, I could barely understand the woman on the phone. I placed an order for Gen Tsos combo, and a sweet and sour chicken combo. I had asked to swap the fried rice in the S&S chix for chicken lo-mein and she found no problem doing so. I was very happy with this seeing how other Chinese restaurants will not substitute. Anyway, she tells me 15 minutes. I hop in the car, drive over, and walk in. The restaurant is pretty spacious, and they actually could add more tables if they wanted to. I walk to the counter where I was greeted promptly. They leave out condiments on the counter, so you can grab as many as you need. Awesome! I was in and out in 3 minutes. I get home and open my bag to find everything as promised. The food was super hot, so I know it just got cooked. The general's chicken was delicious and a little different than other places I've had it. The rice was fresh and delicious. The sweet and sour chicken was big and plump. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the amount of soy sauce on the lo-mein. Don't get me wrong, it is really good, but when you finish eating, it leaves a very salty taste in your mouth. Intend on drinking lots of fluids afterward. Eating there, it appears that they haven't gotten a bar set up yet, but I did see some patrons drinking beers, so that is a good sign. I'm so thankful this place opened up as I live down the street. It's by far the best Chinese food I've ever had and I've lived in cities with Chinatowns. The owner is sweet. The portions are huge and the food is fresh, it has no msg, and it's delicious! They just recently got their liquor license, so I encourage people to go and dine in! Spacious enough space for a Chinese restaurant. There's even a bar area. Food tastes just like any other Chinese food. Waitress is very friendly and helpful. She'll talk to you like you're an old friend, though it's hard to understand at times because of her heavy accent. I tried to order Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Not good. Ordered at 5pm. Two hour wait. Not the end of the world since it was New Years Eve. Showed up at 715. Guy says not ready, 20 more minutes. 30 mins later I ask about it. Not ready. When my husband arrived, 50 minutes later, they said they didn't have beef for the beef and broccoli we ordered. What they DID have was our phone number... so why did they wait until he got there to tell him they ran out of our order? He had to wait another 30 minutes for the food to be ready. I've been coming here for at least 10-12 years now. No Chinese place will ever compare. The owners are kind, and very honest people. I am greeted with a huge hug each time I'm in! The crab rangoons are the very best! She makes them at the bar when she is not taking care of customers. They come out perfect and steaming hot every time. Meh. I've experienced better. The inside dining is very nice and simple, good atmosphere and bar to drink at if you wish. The staff is polite and prompt. The issue is the food, the chicken came in a huge portion (+), but the chicken was 90% breading for my General TSO's (-). The egg roll was the size of a roll of dimes (-). Very good quality Chinese food. Everything I have had here has been flavorful and well proportioned (think meat:veggie:starch ratio) This is the place to go if you want something other than the greasy, only good when you're drunk meal that normally happens with Chinese food. The portions are very large when you dine in the restaurant (I have never gotten take-out to know if they match in size). My only complaint has been their timing. Each experience I had there consisted of everyone's plates coming out at different times, as if they only had one pan to cook every dish in. We even asked for extra side dishes to share the meals that did make it out with those who didn't have theirs yet. This happened with me and only one other guest as well as a group.
