I'm heartbroken. This is a sad loss for the locals and island. Ching Tao is the last of the 3 great Chinese restaurants this island had. Hong Kong being the best and my friends family restaurant The Canton being a very close second. This is the second time I've eaten Ching Tao since it changed ownership and the second time I've seen a drastic change in the quality of their food. The difference is night and day. The new owner did what all stupid people do when they buy a great restaurant and trade what made it so great for more money. Such a stupid, STUPID move. He dropped the ball big time and if he doesn't change back right now, it's the beginning of the end for this once outstanding restaurant. I'm sorry. I've eaten this food since I was a kid and I'm 55 now. Trust me when I say what I say. The egg rolls are smaller and pre- cooked or pre cooked even more so when you get them now they're almost burnt and crusty. Not only that they're considerably smaller. I've ordered them on both occasions and they were exactly the same. The best egg rolls on the island by far are close to mall food quality now. I also got the General Tso's chicken. It's half breading now and falls apart on the fork before you can get it into your mouth. I was blown away at the reduction in size of the chicken, the change from chicken breast to thigh meat and doesn't taste half as good as it did. That's all I got the last two times I've eaten there so thats all I can give an opinion on but I'll guarantee everything's changed there in one way or another in the name of the all mighty dollar. I won't be going there again and it makes me genuinely sad. I'm going to miss that place. read more

My husband and I enjoyed a great dinner at Ching Tao in Middletown. After driving 5 hours to Rhode Island from Jersey, we were famished. The restaurant was close to the hotel where we were staying. (If you need a visual landmark, it shares the same lot as the Planet Fitness on Main). Here's what we ordered: - Scallion pancakes - Wings - Steamed Vegetables (snow peas, broccoli, and string beans) - Mapo Tofu - Fried Rice Good food for a great price, and the food also stays well the next day. Plus, there's a bar inside (we did not expect to see that) and they have a whole page of Polynesian Cocktails in their menu! We loved the old school charm of the spot, too. This is my favorite Chinese food spot. It's a combination of the high quality comfort food and the nostalgia of this place. If I need Chinese food that will remind me of good memories and I know will taste great, this is the place to go. Whether taking out or sitting in, the service is good. It's not overly fancy, but it's perfect in my book. I've been going for over twenty years and will continue to get Chinese from here. read more

My favorite is Yang Chow fried rice. I more traditional style of fried rice. Add soy at your table if you want. BUT, it tastes great as it comes out of the kitchen. Cant wait to try the Peking Duck. The staff is very friendly and make you feel like a valued customer and friend. read more

I am originally a New Yorker, so most Chinese food here doesn't make it for me. Ching Tao's food is ok, but what makes the place special is the staff headed by Wanda and the old school atmosphere which reminds me of a typical neighborhood Szechuan place in New York. THE CRAB RANGOONS OMG. How can something be so perfect? I consider myself a crab rangoon connoisseur having sampled some good ones while in Boston's Chinatown during college, but the ones at Ching Tao really take the cake. The storefront and dining area is no frills, but that's okay when the food is this yummy! But yes, back to the Crab Rangoons. The filling manages to be sweet, savory, and umami all rolled into one crisp, perfect bite. Run, don't walk. The rest of the menu serves up your standard Chinese-American cuisine. I love the Steamed Pork Potstickers, and they turn out a respectable Spareribs as well. As other reviewers have mentioned, they do have a liquor license, and the Tiki Drinks (especially the Mai Tai!) are a great accompaniment to the cuisine. Ching Tao is family owned, and the proprietors are present in the operation, serving up food with a smile. The takeout and delivery is also on point, with food arriving hot and fresh every time. With the temps dropping and staying at home for meals sounding better every day, Ching Tao is a great spot to add to the repertoire! read more

I have lived on Aquidneck Island for 55 years, just recently revisited Ching Tao, staff is very friendly. Crab Rangoon very tasty and cooked fresh, hot and sour soup and egg drop soup also very tasty. Yang Chow fried rice "chinese style" was very good. Looking forward to Peiking Duck I like traditional chinese food, so I always as for "Chinese Style". read more

Decided to get takeout from here Friday night and got it right away after calling it in. sesame chicken: average tasting sweet and savory, well fried and sauced boneless pork ribs: essentially char shu pork, tasted sweet as expected but did have a background porky taste that was mildly unpleasant pork fried rice: rice with boneless port ribs, looked extremely brown but was milder in flavor compared to its looks, with minimal veggies and no egg added egg roll: huge, appeared to be ground beef with shredded cabbage and carrot, veggies tasted more on the crunchy raw side, I think pre-salting the veg, letting it sit out to marinate, and adding sesame oil before eggroll assembly would enhance the flavor and texture, most disappointing crab ragoons: mostly cream cheese, crispy For $38 this meal didn't quite hit the Chinese take-out cravings due to the quality of the ingredients. It is definitely time to update my Ching Tao review. We have gone there three times during COVID and all three have been flawless! It is interesting how several local restaurants seemed to have drastically improve with the pandemic. Their takeout game is spot on; you walk in the entrance and give your phone number, they hand you your food, and away you go! They even have a propane heater going while you wait outside. As for their food, their crab Rangoon have to be among the best, and their house made duck sauce (the dark kind), is really amazing. The vegetables were all fresh and crisp and the rest of the flavors on point. Definitely the best Chinese on the island! read more

I ordered take out at Ching Tao. Please please don't use fake "lobster" in your seafood items. Either take it off the ingredient list or use the real thing ( most likely cost prohibitive). Also the steamed dumplings dough was way too thick, but they were tasty. read more

Ok I am glad to report that I have now upped it to 5 stars with Chong Tao after two recent takeout orders that were beyond perfect! This is what I consider "authentic, old school" Chinese. It's so hard to find that around here anymore. Last night I started with wonton soup... Always so delicious!!! Also, we started with Crab Rangoons and they are definitely one of the best in the area, hands down! For dinner I had combination C18 which was General Tsao Chicken with Pork Fried Rice and an Egg Roll (freshly made). Everything was SO good!!! I love their homemade duck sauce as well! I really have no idea how people can say this is the best Chinese on the island. Each time I give it a try we are really disappointed. We got takeout recently and my son who loves Chinese food could barely eat it. Lots of fat in the meat and the crab rangoons really taste like just wontons with sweetened cream cheese. I have no idea where the crab comes in. Just a really unappetizing meal. I just have to remember not to waste my money here and come up with another idea if our regular places are closed. read more

I go there for lunch from time to time, white tablecloth, Chinese food. Food has always been good, a little on the pricey side for lunch. I enjoy the eggroll, chow mein, fried rice... But they have any combination you want. More food than your reasonably need to eat, of course. read more

I really want to like this place, the flavor was nice... been twice now and portions were rather small both times... today I got egg fu young and unfortunately there were hard black burnt pieces in the omelet which I thought were egg shells at first... at $13 dollars for egg fu young dinner, it only came with 1 omelet about 6" in diameter... I get egg fu young everywhere across the country for years when I'm traveling and it always comes with 2 to 3 omelets... just seems skimpy... my wife got Generals chicken which seemed to be a fairly normal sized portion. I got a subgum pan fried noodle. It was $19. Five bucks more than my local place. The pan fried noodles wreaked of fry grease, and they were raw like sphagetti inside. I tossed them. The stir fry smelled of shrimp. A lot like shrimp. One bite, and, they were spoiled, old, bad. I picked out 4 of them, and tossed them. I made my own fried noodles and ate the rest. A solid, typical Chinese restaurant with a LOT of takeout traffic. There are few Chinese restaurants on the island; this one has been heralded by the press as "best". Plenty of parking. Good and amazingly quick service. Immense menu. We had a pot of tea, sweet and sour soups, and entrees of Hunan chicken and moo goo gai pan. Large portions with LOTS of fried rice. Only downside was the egg roll (a very fried, hard mess) and although the one dish was highlighted as "hot" - it was not requiring the addition of very spicy mustard. A real bargain at $30 including tip. We'll be back. We went to this place 2 nights consecutively as it was very close to our hotel. On the first visit, we ordered General chicken and hot and sour soup. The chicken dish was very good but the soup was bland and lack of flavour. The next day we decided to have the chicken again. However, the owner persuaded us to try something supposedly more authentically Chinese (All Family dish). We went with his suggestion and he also recommended a mixed vegetable dish. Well it turned out the 2 dishes were identical- one with meat as protein and the other was the exact same vegetable combo without the protein cooked the exact same style. We would have enjoyed the meal if we followed our original order. It does seem like the owner was capitalising on our ignorance by not only recommending the pricer menu item BUT 2 of the same dish. A real disappointment. I totally will Not recommend this place for the poor customer service. read more
