China Gourmet has been in Huntsville for so long! My Birthday Club frequented China Gourmet in the late 1980s, when we first started celebrating our small group's birthdays three times every year. This location was convenient for everyone and the prices were so reasonable! The staff were always kind and friendly and we could relax, visit, and open gifts and cards for a couple of hours with no issues. We never felt rushed. The interior is cozy and the building is aging; however it still has charm especially with the endless modern, flat roofed, urban restaurants popping up all over Madison County. We typically got the buffet. I enjoyed their Moo Goo Gai Pan, Beef with Broccoli, dumplings, and hot and sour soup. The buffet always had something for everyone and our non-MSG Birthday Club members never experienced headaches or other MSG related issues here. The place was clean. The service was great. They kept glasses full. They kept the dirty plates pulled off the table but it was a Chinese food buffet. Pricing was affordable and that was probably one of the best things about it. Would I eat there again? First time diner. Chose this restaurant based on reviews. Big mistake. This was a Delivery order, not dine in. Order process was a little confusing but Ok. $50 order consisting of Crab Rangoon, Happy Family, House Special Fried Rice and 3 Spring Rolls. Delivery service (Beyond Menu) was excellent as food was delivered as soon as it was picked up and was hot & smelled delicious. It was all downhill after that. My friend & I both found long black hairs in the Spring Rolls and Happy Family. I almost threw up. I've never been so disgusted and grossed out over food before. We immediately threw out the food and ended up eating out at another restaurant. I wasn't going to complain to the restaurant and was going to forget about the experience and move on but my friend reminded me that I paid $50 for food I could not eat & had to throw in the garbage. I'm certainly entitled to a full refund & did end up contacting the delivery service & restaurant but am doubtful they will handle this appropriately. Needless to say, I will never order food from this place again nor recommend it to anyone I know. I've attached photos of the "hairs", for what it's worth. I don't usually write reviews, but after this experience I had to. This is hands down the best Chinese food in Huntsville, AL. I've tried nearly every Chinese restaurant in the city and I'm always left disappointed--until now. China Gourmet is appropriately named, because the quality and flavor profile of their food truly stands out. I visited during lunch and tried the buffet right as they opened. It was excellent. I sampled most of the proteins on the buffet, and every single dish was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. I've finally found my go-to spot for Chinese food in Huntsville. This by far is the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Ordered Moo goo gai pan and Chinese vegetables. Moo goo gai pan was mostly mushrooms with a few pieces of chicken in a dark brown sauce. A smaller selection than most buffets, but the food is always hot and fresh and the price is unbeatable. My favorite is their egg drop soup. It's one of the best I ever had. I added the request that they replace the fried rice that automatically comes with those dishes for beef lo mein and shrimp fried rice. $34.00 and an hour wait later I received cold fried rice on BOTH dishes, accompanied by stone cold crab wontons and greasy honey chicken. This is a hole in the wall small Chinese buffet that is consistently the same each and every time. They have a small selection of "traditional' buffet items, including soups at one heck of a price. The family greets you every time, misses you wen you stay away too long and expresses their appreciation for your business. It's an eclectic crowd that frequents here, too...a hodge podge of culture, class and age mix easily in the small dining room. The selection was extremely limited, a lot of the sauces on the chicken tasted too similar and the "waitstaff" if you could call them that, were very unfriendly. Based on the reviews I went here. The staff were all very nice, unfortunately nothing they had on the bar had been replaced in a while, and was cold including the soup, even the crunchy noodles that go with the soup were very stale. I feel if they would replace the items on the buffet every 1 - 1 1/2 hours the food would most likely be very good. I will give them a second chance and hopefully it will be better. read more

You serve yourself at the buffet, so you get what you desire. My favorite is the honey chicken. I had to go back for more! Nothing fancy or ostentatious here at China Gourmet, but I keep going back because it's cleqn, the service is very good, the food is consistently good (I love the hot'n'sour soup), and the price very easy on my budget. The little Chinese lady who runs the place is cute and friendly, and she knows how to appreciate her customers. She greets everyone and remembers you after you go there a few times, and will already know your choice of drink before you order and where you like to be seated.
