Will not be going back. We have been before for the buffet and it has been ok. Our waitress made us feel rushed. The food was overcooked to the point of it not being edible. We did the $13 buffet on a Saturday night, around 5:00pm. The food was average, waitress not super attentive but very friendly when we asked her for recommendations of what to do around the area (since we are here from Nebraska). Sad parts: The lemon creme shrimp was subpar at best, sushi was halfway decent. The lo mein was over cooked and the fried rice was almost over cooked. Happy parts: seafood balls were great, loved the beef in mushroom sauce, sesame chicken, grilled chicken and spare ribs. The rest of the food was just average. But we enjoyed it. :) Definitely a good option, but if you are used to high quality Chinese fare, steer clear. read more

Pass on this place. The buffet is a complete waste of money because there is very little variety and the quality of what is served is quite poor. I ate what I could on my plate and left. It is almost $16 a person for two small rows of dehydrated fried food different types of brown slop that all tasted the same. After trying the hot selection I did not dare to try anything in the salad bar or tiny seafood section for fear of food poisoning. We live in the area and we love China Hill. It is not going to compete with top notch Chinese cuisine in, say, San Francisco or other cosmopolitan areas. But in Downeast Maine? It's pretty awesome. We normally order carry out, which is always consistently good. Last night we tried their buffet and we were impressed! The hot entrees were good and fresh, and there was even a small selection of sushi and excellent seaweed salad. Whenever we're seeking to satisfy our craving for Chinese food, China Hill is always our preferred choice. Service has always been friendly and skillful, too. Great value, great place. read more

I used to go here with my family at least every 2 weeks but they have changed the food so much that we don't like it anymore. We had high hopes, but the food left a lot to be desired. We decided to go with the buffet. The seafood tasted old, the fried beef wonton tricked us into thinking it was a crab Rangoon, but lo and behold there actually wasn't any crab Rangoon on the buffet. The tempura vegetables were cold, most of the Chinese dishes were baked under the light and drowning in sauce. The hot and sour soup was decent, but the egg drop was nothing like egg drop I'm used to anywhere else. What the......No. she escorted us to a booth in a large seating area. We decided to check out the buffet. Very interesting because the food was over baked by the heating lamp but the selection was large. It ranged from Easter cakes to sushi and numerous Chinese dishes I think. The most flavorless Chinese ever. Drink was okay, maybe a few more and I might have enjoyed lunch.

Price was not bad at 12.99$. However, the selection was not very good given the cost of the buffet: - Sunday Dinner did not include crab legs or a large amount of seafood. Only unpeeled shrimp were available with no prepared dishes with seafood. - Standard items were plentiful such as Chicken with Broccoli and Pepper Steak, however, other dishes such as Thai derivatives or Japanese chicken were not options. - Sushi was only 3 different rolls which were quite small. When I went up to get food there were only Vegetarian (cucumber) rolls and pork rolls. Not sure, but who puts pork into Sushi? Given this buffet is so close to the Atlantic Ocean and multiple fishing communities, the use of seafood in this buffet (or lack thereof) is appalling. Finally, the food looked slimy which is general of dishes with massive amounts of MSG dumped in. This was not advertised outside nor on the menu that they cook with MSG. Only noticed this after trying to get some Hot & Sour soup and noticed a sign warning this item contains MSG. Then walked around the buffet and noticed other items with MSG. Last time I checked the year is 2010 and most (if not all) Chinese restaurants are working on getting rid of MSG. The reason why restaurants use MSG is because its a neurotoxin which makes foods taste better, thus, its much easier to cook the food w/o spices or appropriate cooking knowledge. Now, my GF gets massive headaches when eating foods with MSG so this place cooking it was a grave concern as we still had to drive to NJ. We ended up just leaving and not eating or paying for our meal but not without the owner trying to convince us that some of the items do not use MSG, however, we are sure they used the same cooking utensils, etc thus there would still have been trace amounts. Do not recommend this place or any other (1) with high price and low quality/variety and (2) which cooks using MSG. read more

We were hungry. We were excited. We loaded up plates and then my boyfriend noticed a tiny sign above one of the serving tables "caution, some food contains MSG.". We left. Sad and still hungry. Explaining that my physical reaction to this neurotoxin is particularly horrific. I really do not like to write bad reviews. If I have a bad experience, I bring it to the attention of the restaurant and then come back again to see if things have improved. So I went to China Hill for the first time last year and had a decent meal (Moo Goo Gai Pan, my fallback dish - also usually the first dish I order at a new restaurant.) I would have rated that dish 2 and a half to 3 stars. I didn't like the fact that there was so much broccoli in it (The Moo Goo I am used to has no Broccoli) so the next time I asked them if they could hold the broccoli and just add more of the other ingredients. They obliged me, and the Moo Goo ended up maybe a 3.5..close to 4 stars. On the strength of these experiences, I ordered 6 subsequent 1-star meals from them. Every time I have gone since I have gotten vile, disgusting, inedible food. I've taken a few bites and thrown it away. The dishes I have had since ranged from Ho Fun (Chow Fun) Noodles to Curry Chicken. They even made poor Moo goo since. I will then call up and tell them why I felt it was poor quality., They do offer me a refund, but I don't feel like going back. I keep thinking, "Maybe this is the time that will be similar to the first 2 experiences." and it never is. It NEVER is! The people in there are nice enough but I really don't go in there for the nice people. I want good food and it just isn't there. I don't really like buffets so I cannot comment on their buffet, but there is a big sign on to top of each buffet food-holder-thingy that says "Some dishes may contain MSG" which essentially means all dishes contain MSG. Here's the thing that gets me about this: MSG is supposed to enhance flavor, yet their food still tastes like an improperly-wiped rectal cavity. And this is the only Chinese restaurant I have ever been in that puts peas in egg drop soup. Blech. Do yourself a favor: if you really want good Chinese, hop in the car, go to 123 franklin Street in Bangor. Panda Garden (check out my Yelp review on them) is the best Chinese in the area hands down. read more

My wife and I went here for dinner on 7/29/17 (Sat.) and ordered the so-called "Hot Delight," described as breaded scallops and chicken in sauce. It turned out to be utterly tasteless, with half the dish being just fried spatters of breading by itself. There was no seasoning, and the sauce was a small cup of red syrup that seemed to be just sugar with red dye. We were pretty tired from hiking in Acadia, and had it not been 8:30 pm, we would have left the food uneaten and gone elsewhere. To add insult to injury, the service was awful. read more

I've had their buffet before and like that better, it has some good options. My dad did recently order a hamburger that came out pink in the middle and felt awful the rest of the day. I think, my friend & I came at the wrong time... That time after lunch & before dinner, when the dishes don't turn over as fast as when it's busy, so some of the pans of food were drying out or over cooked. For the price of the buffet, $12.95, there wasn't a wide selection to choose from. The staff was friendly and attentive, but that doesn't make up for the lack of quality in the food. I'm not sure where to start. I'll begin on a positive note. The dining area seems clean and the staff was nice. The hot tea was good. Maybe they should rethink running any kind of restaurant that serves food and open a tea shop. I ordered shrimp with lobster sauce and I think they served me spoiled pork gravy (ground pork in a slimy gray colored sauce) with a few shrimp in it were not what I'd consider fresh and the sauce smelled and tasted like dirty mop water. The pork fried rice was just brown rice with soy sauce and cubes of pork in it. Even the egg roll smelled a little funky. I had no problem with the service so this review is not biased based on bad service. My mom had sesame chicken and said the sauce was not bad but it wasn't what she was hoping for when we decided to have Chinese food for lunch. After eating lobster and lots of other delicious seafood on my visit to Maine, I guess I can truthfully say that Ellsworth Maine is not, and never will be known for their Chinese food. read more

The service was very fast I enjoyed that greatly. This was my second time here and I ordered the same thing as before. Crab Rangoons, shrimp fried rice and shrimp in a lemon sauce. I found the broccoli a little under done but it was still good. Crab Rangoons were light and fluffy not a lot of crab though. I've had better Chinese food but this wasn't bad. We came from Northern VA, guess we have too much of expectation here. The buffet is all take-out type of food...There were 10 choices max, and all old and salty. I guess for a small town like this, the restaurant cant afford to cook much food for each night if there are not many customers. $12.95 is not much for a buffet dinner, but definitely is way too much for what we got tonight...
