Good food. Fun place, especially for kids. They do charge for every refill of sodapop. $3.00/each (full price for refill too). I feel the waitress should tell people this when they order another (as most places are free refills), had we had known this, the whole table probably would not have all got refills, we would have had water. A good server would let you know it will be an extra charge. We paid $18 I'm just sodas to start with...then with all having 1 refill and some having 2, we had $45 JUST IN POP/SODA, that is fountain pop in a SMALL glass, that cost them pennies. This was my first time at a Mongolian Grill and I am pleasantly surprised. I wasn't sure what to expect when coming here, but I'm glad I gave it a try! So here you pay a price for and "all you can eat" meal. It depends on the time of day as well as day of the week. If you don't actually eat a ton of food, this can be pricey. You can also order appetizers or salads or desserts, etc on the side if you'd like. Then you go up to a kind of buffet line of different things to put in your stir fry such as meat, noodles and vegetables. I enjoyed the rice noodles the best. They have all kinds of vegetables available from mushrooms to baby corn to water chestnuts to spinach, you name it! Everything is really fresh and neatly separated. Then you get to the part where you choose your sauce and there are so many options from sweet to salty to spicy. I really liked the Black Thai Peanut. It's recommended to have at least 5 scoops of sauce. After that, you bring it up to the large circular grill and the fry it up for you. Awesome! read more

This is a good place if you have a big group (10+ people). I used to frequent huhot in large high school groups several years ago and nothing about the experience has changed. The seating area is nothing special, but they can accommodate large parties easily. The fun part is you can make your own creation. They have a bar with frozen meats, seafoods (crab, squid, scallops, mussels), 3 different noddle options and the veggie section is solid. There are sauces you can choose from to create your own flavors or sauce recipes you can follow. Pro tip: I always find my bowl over following by the end so you can grab two bowls- one for meat + noddles and another bowl for veggies. If you are vegetarian there is tofu and the cooks will clean off a section of the grill and try to separate your food so your neighbors' meat doesn't accidentally fall in. Don't forget to add toppings when your plate is finished! I always find my food tastes pretty similar no matter what sauce creation I make. Dinner is about $15 plus tip. I don't love coming here, but it's a different experience if someone in your group is new to Mongolian grill and you are looking for a chill spot to have a large group meal. read more

We got in right away, even amid the homecoming night rush. Our server was delightful and quick to refill our beverages and clear used plates. The buffet was well stocked with meat, fish and fresh veggie options, as well as three types of noodles. You choose from about 15 different sauce and vinegar options before passing your bowl off to the grill warriors :) You are master of your own destiny here, so you can't really blame anyone for not liking your own concoction. I will say that I found most of the sauces (even the spicy ones) to be a little too syrupy sweet for my personal taste. Same goes for the dressing on the otherwise well made Asian salad that came as a side dish. By the end of the night, we had found our winning combination- a garlic rice wine vinegar and good old fashioned soy sauce. A fun spot for teens and families with young children. read more

If you have not been to a HuHot it is much like the Genghis Grill in Cedar Rapids and TX. You pick your stir fry ingredients from a buffet of fresh meats and vegetables and they cook it up for you on a large grill. There is plenty of meats to choose from along with sea food and just about any vegetable you can think of including cilantro and 3 types of noodles. There are several oils and wet spices to choose from to add to your dish. No dry spices. To accompany your stir fry, you get a choice of white rice or a wrap delivered to your table. I think that is all but we normally just get the white rice. I have been here many times with vegetarian friends and they never go away hungry. About this location: It is clean and the staff are courteous and helpful. I am not sure if all HuHots have all the meats this locations has but besides for the traditional chicken, pork and beef there is two kinds of sausage, meatballs, shrimp, calamari and imitation crab meat. I am pretty sure there is tofu too if you desire. I do believe the meat choices change based on if you come in for lunch or dinner. For drinks I believe they have one of those newer soda dispensing machines with all Coke flavors, all fanta flavors, Hi-C lemon aid etc. A few times now I asked the server to just mix up a few of the various flavored sodas and I have never had a bad drink. There is also a bar on one end for alcoholic beverages, I have never used so I cannot speak to and I do know they have desert but with the bottomless bowl I have never had room for desert. read more

I am a huge fan of Mongolian barbeques. The only other one I am aware of and can compare this to is Khan's back in Minnesota, which I have been to scores of times. HuHot is way better across the board: * very nice decor. It has the classic food bar to select what proteins, veggies and sauces you want. There is a humongous circular cooking table with one cook (Khan's has two tables and two cooks per table, able to handle a higher volume). Maybe they bring out a second cook if a line forms. Ample, comfortable seating, nice art work. * very good wait staff. Our waiter was awesome, 5 stars, very attentive. I normally give a low tip at Khan's because the waitress may show up once, and is pretty much useless. Here, the waiter showed up with a carafe of water, got us our salads, cleared the table. No problem giving a 20% tip. * two salad choices to go with the main course. Again, I can only compare to Khan's, which does not offer a salad. Salad was large and fresh.. * the quality and variety of meat and seafood. I only got seafood. Very good. * tons of different vegetables and noodles. * great sauve bar, including one very hot sauce. My nose was running, which is a good thing. Price was $76.80 for five of us. I am used to paying around $100 for the five of us at meals, so the price seems fair. They also allow going up multiple times, which my three kids did. My daughter is just starting her freshman year at UI, so we will definitely be back. read more

My second trip to HuH0t and I will say the first time I was not impressed at all. This time I was pleasantly surprised. They've upgraded their ingredients and it was actually very good. The service was fair. Not great but not horrible. Bad thing was...i paid and got one bowl, but was informed I was not supposed to take the leftovers home. I think that's a crock. HuHot is the best. We got seated right away which was surprising for a group of six in a Saturday night. Our waiter(David) was over right away and made sure everyone knew how getting the food worked and made sure to keep on refilling the drinks and rice all night. You get to chose what goes on your food and can keep on going up as many times as you want. Love the descriptions that are by the sauces so you know what is what. It has been a few years since I went to a HuHot. Now I remember why. The good first. The master grillers are good. These guys were not as fun as some of the others I have seen in the past but still fun to watch. The selection of sauces was good. The veggies was diverse although some of it was canned and not fresh. If you are a carnivore, then you will find a diverse selection of tasty bits. I was really surprised that the spicy sausage was actually spicy and flavorful. The bad. And there are a few since I only gave this 2 stars. It started with the interior. The tables and chairs had a sticky feel to them. Part of it is the open kitchen format but it is also from a lack of cleaning. I know this having worked at a few restaurants over the years. On the same topic of cleanliness, the sauce and veggie and meat areas were just not kept clean. Yes the restaurant was busy. And the staff did a great job of keeping things stocked. Unfortunately, keeping those area clean was not part of their job. The last thing that helped to make this just a three star was the weird service that another table received. The family of 4 had been there through their first plate. Then they went up for another plate. While they were gone, the staff cleared their table completely and gave it to another family. The waitress never gave them a check or anything. When they came back, they were surprised and asked the hostess what happened. Instead of apologizing, they were pointed (not lead) to another table. The family was really cool about it and laughed it off. The waitress apologized but the hostess and manager never came over to apologize for giving away their table. Very poor management. read more

Huhot is a great alternative to a buffet for a belly busting meal. During busy times it's not the best quality on the grill side of the line due to the sheer volume of people being cooked for. The new zucchini noodles don't soak up the flavor and will leave your plate a bit watery. The best time to visit Huhot is during less popular meal times to ensure the plate is cooked very well. I dont recommend the premium options like squid or fish that are available on busy weekend dinners, they're always a bit fishy. Overall, Huhot is an outstanding place to get a truly nutritions meal. After doing the math, it turns out that there are tens of thousands of ways you can have your plate prepared. It's all up to you. Experimenting with the sauces is fun and the veggies are my favorite part. read more

I've been a satisfied enough customer for many years until today. Service was great today. Food was good today. They changed their child age policy. Instead of kids prices up to age 12, like before and most restaurants, it's now only 10. So my 11 year old only ate half what I did, but was still charged $15. It's a stupid policy. They just lost my business until my son eats like an adult, so probably two years. My daughter is 7, so she'll hit the end in three years, so they might lose our business until she can eat like an adult. After all, she'll be charged that way. This HuHot is like every other franchise HuHot. Same Mongolian theme decor, create your own meal, and watch the cooks flip your meal as it cooks. Meat selection: steak, chicken, pork, sausage, imitation crab. Noodle selection: pad tai, yakisoba noddles, Chinese noodles. Veggie selection: carrots, green beans, broccoli, cilantro, red potatoes, tofu, etc. Sauces: mix and match 5-6 ladles of sauce into your bowl. Take your bowl to the grill and watch as your meal is cooked on a large grill. I've been to this restaurant many times, and each time rate it 3-5 stars. Tonight was a 3 because the food station was not very organized. Meats were intermingled with other meats, veggies scattered around the top of other veggies, sauces slopped around the sauce station. I have been at this restaurant and have SEEN workers who work diligently to keep these areas clean. Just not tonight. Our server was fantastic. The food bars are well stocked if a bit messy at times. The food is always fresh. Be careful around the sauces as it can be slippery. GOOD: Decor is great. Even on a packed night with noisy college kids, conversation isn't difficult. Overall selection is sold -- many sauces, 3 choices of noodles, decent meat selection, etc. Veggies were fresh. Even on a busy night with tons of people, they managed to keep the food stations and grill area clean. Price is decent, assuming you get at least two plates. Otherwise, stick to mall food. Items were restocked quickly. They claim no MSG. BAD: The chefs didn't quite cook everything. Meat was fine, but veggies were barely touched. The broccoli seemed like it wasn't cooked at all. The chefs also didn't mix ingredients well. Meat and noodles ended up together, and often there was no mixing until placing the ingredients in the bowl. When there was mixing, it was after the sauce has boiled off. Putting noodles before veggies can make bowls difficult to stack. Waitress was quite disappointing. Not interested in being helpful or making the experience nice -- minimum attention and effort was given. GENERAL INFO and TIPS: White rice is provided with the meal. Dinner also comes with soup or salad (salad wasn't impressive). Waiters will take menus with them when they take your order, so if you want to know what sauces are available and what their relative hotness is, you'll want to ask to keep a menu. Don't be terrified if you show up on a busy night. If you're willing to wait 15 minutes or so, your experience will probably be quite smooth once you get seated, and the large crowd won't be prohibitive to getting your plate made. I suggest piling noodles onto one half of the bowl and then putting veggies on the other half. Makes stacking ingredients much easier. I suggest using more than the recommended 5-6 ladles of sauce to achieve optimal food experience. i suggest going for less quantity and more variety when filling your bowl. Getting another plate made is easy and quick, so the important thing is to make each plate worthwhile. OVERALL: Recommended. Bring out-of-town friends here, come here for a date night, bring family here, make it a regular visit. As long as you get more than one plate, it's worthwhile. Solid experience. Recently my wife and I went to the Hu-Hot restaurant in Iowa City. We were met at the door by a male greeter dressed in a white shirt and black slacks and apron. He led us to our table and our waitress came nearly immediately. She was very attentive to detail in both explaining the dining experience as well as offering suggestions and her personal choices. The food was wonderfully full of color and taste and cooked to perfection in front of us with flair on their grill. The waitress checked back regularly but not too often.
