We have been coming here for years and we were extremely disappointed this time!! It has been probably a year since we were here last. You have to eat from paper plates and plastic forks/spoons. Service was ok for a buffet meal. The buffet is large with many varieties of food. Some of the items seemed frozen / heated and not actually prepared. Disappointing is an understatement. Tried this place for the first time with my family. I should have came alone and saved a lot of money to find out that I will never be here again. I could not believe they offered paper plates for you to get your food. Then they bring your drinks in plastic cups. This is ridiculous,... oh and to make it better over 50% of the food pans were either out of food or had just enough for one scraping of food. We took our time eating in hopes that they would bring more food out. They did not! With more than an hour left before they closed they just stopped. My daughters and I have eaten at this buffet many times over the years when we have gone to Iowa City. Sadly it is not the place it used to be. Today my daughter and I went and I was shocked to see plastic silverware on the table. Then we realized they no longer use proper plates or bowls - it's all paper. Red solo cups for your beverages. The main reason being that the $15 for this dinner buffet was disappointing. everything is served on paper plates, plastic cutlery, and red solo cups. A lot of the food trays were never re-stocked (I love hot and sour soup and it was empty my entire visit) and several trays that were stocked were lukewarm and visibly old. the Mongolian stir fry chef was rarely visible, and i wasn't even sure if it was open. My friend wanted to peeking buffet for dinner for her birthday. Hi however, have had several negative experiences going there. Basically I went up to the buffet and hardly anything is up there. It's like it's dried up and there's maybe one serving of that there so I decided not to take a plate and just not eat food like it wouldn't be good to eat, the lady brought us our drinks, sparkly. I took a sip and it was warm and flat, no carbonation so I went up to let them know and they argued with me telling me the machine was fine. My friend had eaten a piece of watermelon and decided she did not want to eat there because nothing looks good, we went up to the front and the girl demanded that I pay for my drink even though was flat and I only had one sip. All they had to drink it and they could tell it was bad but they didn't. They argued about it she demanded that my friend pay for her meal, even though she had just a piece of watermelon. First of all - not closed. Ate there today. That being said - their food has never been great, but they've swapped out some palatable options to make room for more inedible seafood. No more General Tso's chicken, for starters. The buffet now comes complete with paper plates, red (I can't believe they're not) Solo cups, and plastic tableware. No kids price. Hard to track anyone down for a refill on a drink, which was odd given that it's one of two primary responsibilities for anyone checking on tables at a buffet. None of this touches on the fact the food that was on the buffet was often out. Some was replaced fairly quickly, other times were out when we arrived and never refilled. All of this comes on top of the fact their price is significantly higher than it was previously. When it was time for ice cream at the end and I was putting it in the supplied styrofoam coffee cup I knew I'd never be back. I hate to shred a restaurant, but this place was never great. Now? Horrible, horrible, horrible. First it is HOT inside the restaurant, about 80-85 degrees. I asked someone if the A/C was broken and the person said "No it's just hot". The food was not fresh and not replenished frequently. The sushi bar was not filled out at all and not attended as with the hibachi. When I informed the hostess that the sushi bar was completely empty she replied "Tell me which one you want and I will have it made for you." Well the idea of a buffet is to have a selection of choices, not to order a specific item. I told her no thank you and went back to the buff but did not select anything. I am guessing their dishwasher mush of been broken or they were understaffed because to make matters worse we were eating on paper plates, drinking out of red solo cups, and using plastic utensils. The best thing that happened was the waitress noticed I didn't eat and did not charge me. None at my table went back for seconds except my wife who just got soup. Typical buffet options with several non-Chinese options available for those who prefer other cuisines. American Chinese all the way--sesame chicken, chicken with broccoli, egg rolls, etc. They do offer a seafood soup on the dinner buffet. In the sushi section, there were about three different variation of California Rolls sitting out. What did stand out was the service we received during the evening of December 4, 2017. They must have had their 'A-Team' working that night, as we had a server who was very attentive and even took our checks to the register for us (have never had that happen before). It was there, but was minus the peanut butter. It was just fried chicken. The white rice was so over cooked that it was almost like watered down rice pudding. The sushi bar was pretty much empty. The green beans had been out there waaaay too long. The only thing that was OK was the fish and meat on a stick. 90% sure it was chicken another one of my Chinese buffet favorites. I was not expecting to be eating out of paper plates with plastic silverware for $13.99 per person. A large percentage of the options were over cooked and dried out. The fried rice was very salty and did not taste homemade. Many of the dishes we used to enjoy were no longer on the menu. The egg rolls were over cooked and half the size they used to be. My wife used the restroom and could not believe how dirty it was. Hopefully the kitchen is not as dirty. It is unfortunate that this place has gone so far down hill. We will not be back. read more

For those who are in love with the food here, I think we need to have a talk. Having grown up in the buffet line, I'm a fan of places that serve food in hog trough style, but it's gotta be comida that's at least worth what you pay for. This was unfortunately not that case when we visited the Peking buffet. I've got nothing against places that have some grime going on or that are busy enough that some things are out, but when the food is truly not worth eating, that's my limit. We wandered in for a late dinner this past week after seeing 6 days of lines coming out of the place after the grand opening. The decor inside is actually very authentic and the servers were fantastic (they kept the place open late for a number of us who came in 20 minutes before closing) - extra star for service. That's where the good stuff ended. The buffets were nicely stocked, the chandelier (with a rotating colored light above it no less) adorned said buffets, and the place smelled of Chinese buffet. We counted about 12 different types of chicken and to be fair, these were decent - our favorite was the peanut butter chicken. Crab rangoons were solid as well. At that point however, things got rough. Our first hint that things may go south was when we saw the frog legs...yes frog legs at a Chinese buffet. They were interesting, not gross. The egg drop soup was pretty bad - may have been because it's made with Coralville water, but either way, I didn't finish it. The dim sum offerings were a chicken rice and a red bean roll - these were unfortunately sub par. The sushi bar was exciting until we tasted the sushi. Again, I'm glad the attempts are being made, but the sushi needs to be fresh - these tastes like old fish. Didn't have any of the Mongolian BBQ, but suspect it's okay as it's hard to mess up. The desserts were iced cream and a number of rolls. The ice cream was not real high quality (I know, it's a buffet) and left much to be desired. Getting a big bunch of store brand would be a step up. They do the standard fried Americanized Chinese food really well here, but you can grab that at a grocery store. The "real" Chinese dishes were really cheaply done and left way to much to be desired for even the $12 that the buffet cost. The positives included the service and the decor - you can tell they're excited about the place! Based on the lines, we were expecting to be blown away, but aside from the "insert location or ingredient here" chicken and other fried goods, the food was really sub-par. If we want fake Chinese (which we often do) we'll grab it at Hy-vee. read more
