Food is okay, but is nothing unique about it. You would expect that being the only Chinese restaurant on Mount Desert Island, the restaurant should at least hold itself to a higher standard and stand out from other generic Chinese restaurants. The decor and atmosphere need improvement. This restaurant charges extra for little things (i.e. tea). My recommendation is order off the regular menu and take a break from your lobster feast while you're at Bar Harbor. My overall recommendation is: unless you are desperate for Chinese/Asian food during your stay at Bar Harbor, you can afford to skip China Joy and move on. read more

This is a classic small family business. There are only two people to serve so service may be slow but they are nice. The food is good. They have authentic Chinese flavors. This place is terrible. The previous bad reviews are accurate. We had lobster pad Thai supposedly with meat from a whole lobster for market price. Really, where was tail meat? Meat was rubbery. The sauce was basic soy. No great flavor. No tea at the table. Then to make matters worse, two plates of the above was $65.00 plus tip. A totally unacceptable rip off. Do not eat here. read more

Ate here while on vacation. First impressions of the Chinese restaurant are disgusting. Dead flies every where (even to the public eye walking by) and not a very clean dining room. The overall atmosphere just seems kind of dull and dingy. We had the crab Rangoon's and General Gous chicken with pork fried rice. The crab Rangoon's were probably the best thing we had, although they were sort of bland. The General Gous chicken had a funny texture to it, almost mushy, and had a weird fishy taste to it. The pork fried rice was just strange, it wasn't like the pork fried rice I have grown accustomed to at other Chinese eateries. Overall I would probably give this restaurant a 1.5 out of 5. It is rare that I would not eat a meal that I paid for. It is doubly rare that both my wife and I would not eat a meal we paid for. It is extremely rare that our dog turned her nose up and was not begging for it. It is exceptionally rare that I would download an app just to write a negative review...which is kind of sad, really. It was my wife's birthday and she was craving Chinese Food. The broccoli was over-cooked and the chicken tasted old and dry. The flour on my wife's food was so thick that the food was doughy (which it should not be). The rice was ok...and the spring rolls were OK, too. If I could give them a '0,' I would have done so..:except the person who took the orders was incredibly kind. She double checked each of the sauces as one of us is a vegetarian to make sure that there was no fish sauce. We have eaten there before, and while not great, it was acceptable enough to go back...particularly as it is the only game in town for Chinese food that I know of. Whenever people ask me what's the worst restaurant you've ever been to, I always think of this one. The food was just oh-my-goodness-please-run-away-as-fast-as-you-can nasty. Bland, oily, water-soaked, and should I say, fake? We ordered some pork, which was chewy as leather. The fried rice had no taste. The worst were the egg rolls, which had some sort of imitation meat and red food coloring. I had a bite and couldn't take it anymore so I threw it away. And talk about stingy customer service! Me and my family of 3 ordered dinner to go, and the server didn't even give us any forks or napkins. When we asked him, he gave us 1 fork and 1 measly little napkin. A rip off place, it can spoil your travel experience if you are a visitor. They showed me the itemized bill and when the credit card was charged they hid a additional 15% tip (it was just 3 people) and the credit bill had additional entry for tips. (it was not mentioned that tip is included). When questioned they first said it was govt tax. On speaking further they redid the bill , but changed the tone saying if you are poor you dont have to pay the tip. In addition food quality is poor. Scallion pan cakes can with sprinkled scallions. We ordered schezwan Chicken and it was Gen Tsao Chicken with some added chilly. Please cross check your bill before you pay. read more

We are impressed and we live in NYC! The wonton's in the soup were fantastic. They are clearly home made and not overcooked like so many restaurants. The roast pork lomein is excellent too. When you max out on seafood in Bar Harbor, they are a good option. read more

We enjoyed it. The hot & sour soup was good and different but didn't really motivate us. For our entrees we had the Szechuan Beef and Chicken with Cashews. Both were a little different than we're used to but we also liked both of them. My one suggestion, offer brown rice. It's tastier and healthier than white rice. read more

I don't eve care about the service but this place was really dirty. Was on vacation in Bar Harbor and really wanted to have some Chinese food. Saw bad review but still neglected it and said whatever and tried it and I got what I deserved. The worst part was I was really hungry too blahhhhh. For me authentic or American style Chinese food really does not matter. However, there was flies everywhere and a big bee came and sat on my food. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. First experience can leave a bad remark or a very good remark. For me it was on the bad bad side. Service , food and cleanliness: all three were bad. Went here while on vacation this last weekend. It was some of the worst service I have ever had the misfortune of experiencing. My food was acceptable at best however my fiancés food had hair in it and her "hot chocolate" was essentially just warm water with absolute no flavor. When we went to tell the waitress just gave us this blank look like ok something is wrong that's to bad and then just left without making any effort to remidee the situation. She was like ok "so you are done" returned 10 minutes later with the check that on top of had full charges for everything it included a 15 percent manditory tip which was not stated anywhere. I will start with saying that if you are a foodie, you have to know what to order at China Joy and if you are a foodie who still enjoys the old school not really authentic 'Chinese Restaurant ' fare you will get good eats too. The wonton soup is as good as any I have found anywhere in the U.S. And it's a big bowl and worth more than they charge. Vegetarians will really enjoy the green beans, with or without tofu, in black bean sauce and also Eggplant in ginger garlic sauce (though I personally ask for low oil on that one). We visited this place for dinner. 5 minutes after our order, we were told the wait time is 30 minutes. When the for arrived, food looked ok. The cabbage in fried rice, lo mein, and soup tasted bitter. The server said if it doesn't taste good that's how it came from the company that supplies them veggies and if we didn't like it we should take it out before we eat. The teriyaki chicken was horrible, it looked like it was cooked, frozen and refried. It was hard, dry and looked really bad. When told the server about the same, she said she doesn't know and nothing she can do. Finally after reaching out to the manger she voided the charges for teriyaki chicken. By God, the interdimensional vampires have returned. After successfully evading their subterfuge in the great city of New York, I retreated far northward to this small hamlet, which I thought would surely throw the fell beasts' scent. I was grievously mistaken. While walking the street (the missus and I were again swathed in our colonial period-appropriate attire -- admittedly, not the wisest of decisions to avoid detection, but most of my modern garments were left in Manhattan), I caught a glimpse of two faces in the crowd that I had prayed never to lay eyes on again. It was the same slightly disheveled couple that had haunted us in New York, only now clad in hiking apparel! It appeared that they had not yet spotted us, so I seized the moment and pulled my lady through the door that we were passing by in that very moment. Indeed, it was with a great stroke of fortune that this door belonged to China Joy. The many days of flight had certainly left us famished, and the scent of Szechuan Lo Mein was too much to resist. Surely, this establishment would serve as a viable place to wait, until our devilish pursuers had moved elsewhere in their eternal hunt. I did indeed have the Szechuan Lo Mein, which was quite good, and my fair lady had the Crab Rangoon and Chicken Fingers Combination Platter, which she seemed to enjoy. After slightly overstaying our welcome in the restaurant, we departed to a new location which I cannot disclose. I fear that we may never find peace. read more

Not the best Chinese food I ever had, but, not completely terrible either. I ordered the Bacon Shrimp. The prawns were cooked perfectly and were a good size, but, the bacon part was overcooked-burnt on some of the shrimp and the dish lacked flavor.
