I ordered the Lunch portion of General Gau's Chicken with white rice for $7.25, and was able to eat it for 3 portions: dinner, the next day lunch, and the next day's lunch. Delicious, and I usually am not a fan of asian food. I'd rather go for pizza. But this place is good, for takeout or delivery. This was my first visit to China River on Rantoul Street in Beverly. I had some time to kill while waiting for the battery in my MacBook to be replaced at Marconi Radio, so I decided to stop in for lunch. Maybe it was just an off day, but unfortunately I came away disappointed. I ordered three of my favorite American Chinese dishes. Hot & sour soup (extra spicy), pan fried dumplings, and shrimp with lobster sauce. The food wasn't terrible, but nothing really hit the mark for me. The hot & sour soup tasted like the extra heat came from hot sauce rather than traditional Asian spices, which gave it a bitter flavor that just didn't work. The pan fried dumplings were noticeably greasy, both inside and out, making them difficult to enjoy. The shrimp with lobster sauce was probably the best of the three dishes, but even that was just okay rather than memorable. I almost never waste food, but this was one of those rare meals where I ended up throwing away well over half of it. Every restaurant has an off day, so I'm hoping that's all this was, but based on this first experience I don't see myself rushing back. read more

don't! The lo mein is not lo mein it's linguine and it's covered in so much salt and sauce. You can barely eat it. We decided to give this local Beverly restaurant a chance, even after reading some of the dismal reviews, but we're happy to report the food and service were excellent today! We placed a delivery order (for a group of 7 business people) in advance and for a specified time. The order was delivered on-time and complete with all expected items. Included in the order was shrimp lo mein, pork fried rice, beef/chicken teriyaki, crab rangoon, and dumplings... accompanied by plenty of the usual sauces and fortune cookies. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. We couldn't have asked for more. The only slight criticism was that the lo mein may have had too much dark soy or oyster sauce. The group was very pleased, and the vote for 5-stars was unanimous! Maybe we caught them on a good day, but we will order again, if the opportunity arises. Thank you, China River!! read more

So dry and bad tasting were the pork rounds my husband said since those were his thing. Garbage right away. Egg rolls ...lame. beef teriyaki sticks? I have been going to China River for what seems like a lifetime. However recently the quality of food is at best subpar. The pork fried rice has zero taste, little to no pork, and the price has gone way up. Tonight after dinner, we all opened up our fortune cookies, and 3 of the 5 cookies had no fortune, and every one of the cookies were stale. I get the cost of everything has gone up, but quality of taste should not drop. Up your game before you lose a lot of lifetime customers. One star is entirely too many. read more

I was a longtime customer but not after tonight, the food is awful now I had to throw it all away it doesnt even look like Chinese food anymore, Yhey put all my food in one container a whole pupu platter just in one big box with these nasty boneless spare rib that's had this weird sauce all over it, The chicken wings were white like just wings you make at home in the oven not brown how they usually were, The rice has undercooked pieces of pork in it and was flavorless rice, The chicken fingers and crab rangoon seemed like it was from the freezer not freshly cooked, I threw it all away paid $52 dollars and ended up eating a ham sandwich for dinner instead was so disappointed. They will not make it if this is the food they are selling now they wont make it! Their going out of business by years end or have to sell it. I didn't have high expectations from this place. Went it for a quick takeout since it's close to my place. It was very hot inside the restaurant, I don't advise anyone to dine-in. They have an open kitchen if you want to watch. There's quite a variety in their menu including some szechuan dishes. I opted for C9 which includes fried rice, chicken wings, boneless spareribs and pepper steak. Wings was quite flavorful and the spareribs was average. The pepper steak was different from what I thought. Their version comes with big slices of green peppers. Serving was big enough for two meals. read more

China River not a place in which one eats ( unless one is inebriated or incapable of being shamed); it reeks of cooking oils and light griddle smoke. Of all the Chinese joints in Beverly, this place offers the best value for each menu item [especially the numbered combo platters that can be ordered for cheap money during the lengthy lunch period to 4pm). Delivery generally is accurate and completed within a reasonable time period. Overall, you can get fancier and better dishes in a high end Chinese or Taiwanese restaurant; however, for its relatively wide menu range, speed of preparation, accurate delivery, great value and generous portions, China River cannot be surpassed in this neck of the woods. read more

I used to live around the corner from the China River. Certainly not the worst Chinese food but definitely not the best. It's sub-standard. A great fix on a Friday/Saturday night when no one else is serving food downtown and you want to feed that stomach to prevent a hang over....only you wake up the next day to a hang over and an upset stomach. It's a bit sketchy in the summer time when the back/side door on Pond Street is open and you can see the cooks making the food and I must say it doesn't look very clean back there. China River gets a bad rap. I've been eating here for years and I can understand why. It's kind of like the Chappelle Show skit where ODB is renamed the Ol' Dirty Chinese Restaurant. It's not dirty in here, but it's in a hundred year-old building and nothing is done to make the join look anything close to pretty. There are four or five tables opposite the counter. The only people I've ever seen eating at the tables were people who looked like they were more interested in having a roof over their head for a half hour than they were in eating their meal, if ya dig. Here's my take on the place. If someone says "Chinese food" and you think of crab rangoons and chicken wings, China River is for you. If you think Moo Goo Gai Pan and crisp stir fry, go somewhere else. The fancier you get at China River, the less you'll like your food. If you want fried, American-Chinese food in little take-out cartons, China River is for you. If you want some noodle-ginger-scallion-sesame-wasabi-ahi-mahi mahi dish, go to PF Chang's. read more

What a surprise to find this wonderful Chinese restaurant in Beverly! The chicken wings were plump and juicy. Spear ribs were meaty. Crab Rangoon's and egg rolls were crispy and filled with deliciousness! Excellent beef and broccoli and the bread...what Chinese place serves fresh delicious bread? China River does! Worlds best General Tso's (Gau's) chicken, just ask for them to cook it extra crispy, and spicey. They define good Hot and Sour Soup if you prefer alot of variety in it. I like all their apps, lunch specials, fried rice, noodles, egg foo young, and it's the best price for chinese in town. Don't dine in... it's not ventilated, and the bathroom is sketchy. I'm giving china river 4 stars because it's 5 stars when i'm drunk on a Friday or Saturday, but it's only really 3 stars when I'm sober. Honestly nothing special just solid Americanized Chinese food! Seriously, the BEST take out Chinese in the area. Obviously we're not talking about authentic stuff here... Americanized takeout is the deal. And in that regard, its definitely five stars. Many claim this but this place just is so. Don't let the appearance fool you. I'll take this place's food over any of the "better" looking places around. The fried shrimp are massive and crispy, generals chicken to die for, and about everything else I have ever ordered is damn near perfection. Once again, for Americanized junkfood Chinese! Seriously. Portions on combination plates are massive. They take it easy on the MSG (if they even use it); you're not dying for water as if you were in the Sahara for days after eating their food. Phone service is friendly and easy to communicate with, and its generally friendly at the pickup counter.
