Good local Chinese restaurant... China Wok isn't my favorite local Chinese restaurant, but it is good and close to home. We went there this evening for dinner, we had some appetizers... Fried wontons, BBQ spare ribs and chicken-lettuce wraps, all were pretty good, nothing that jumped out at me and said Wow! But good... For the main course I had the sizzling shrimp, that was even better... A bit sweet, but good. Very nice people, the service is good here, my glass of Iced Tea never got below half. The prices are reasonable... Not expensive. The atmosphere is average, clean and casual... Nothing special, nothing real negative. If I had anything negative to say, it would be this... I like to use Splenda or Equal in my Iced Tea and they only have sugar and Sweet-n-Low... That might be trivial to some but for me, I look at it as making the restaurant a bit outdated and cheapens the experience, especially with today's competition among restaurants... So, all in all... Very refreshing Chinese chicken salad! Fantastic lunch menu selection at reasonable prices and decent portions. Offers up a hot fresh pot of tea, wonton chips with dipping sauce, for free, right as you sit down. It's relaxed in here. No music playing. Just the hum drum of the kitchen. Other diners are not too loud and are very chill. The lady that waits on you is very nice and wears a uniform. It's a touch of professionalism I appreciate. I Just discovered this authentic Chinese restaurant. I have been trying to find chow mein with crispy noodles and not soft noodles. This is how I ate Chinese food growing up. It was delicious and just like I remember. They have a full lunch that includes steamed rice, salad, egg roll, wontons and a kettle of hot tea. All for $10. Cannot be beat. I like Chinese food, and I'm not talking about Panda Express. I came in during their lunch specials and ordered the Mongolian beef. It can with it soup, egg roll, wonton, salad, rice (steamed or fried), crispy wonton, fruit and hot tea. I love it when they serve you hot tea without asking. It all looked great, but then came the first bite. :/ Disappointment fell over my face. There was no life or robust flavor. The beef felt lifeless, the sauce barely flavorful. The green scallions minimal and the shoots plentiful. The rest of the meal was great, but I've had better and for less money. Think I'm gonna have to try another Chinese food place. read more

Sad how things can change from 5 stars to 1 star so fast. We arrived when they opened their doors at 4:30pm. We were the only dining customers in the restaurant. As we were seated, 3 to go orders and 2 phone orders were being taken. 15 minutes had gone by without acknowledgement from anyone. I finally had to wave someone down to assist us. The owner stated the waitress was late, she'd be in soon. No apologies, just business I guess. After the owner gathered herself, she finally took our order. The waitress finally arrived, she was 20 minutes late. Her time was now spent setting up a private table for her family. The waitress never once approached us to see how our meal was or to bring us our check. I now had to witness how bad this place really was. We finished our dinner and sat there for 20 minutes. NO ONE even bothered to see how we were doing or if we were ready to go. I had to wave her down. Another entitled waitress, I seemed to have bothered her by having to ask for my check. Visited with friends last month, and we were underwhelmed. Portions were small, the dishes we ordered seemed pretty bland and light on meat content. I realize food prices have gone up, so perhaps that explains both aspects of what we experienced. We ordered lemon chicken and a couple of other dishes, along with fried rice. The fried rice, unlike any I've eaten in ANY Chinese restaurant (or cooked myself from authentic Chinese cookbooks) had few, if any, vegetables. When the chicken dish arrived, we soon discovered it was orange chicken. When we explained this to the waitress, her response was something like, "Well, what I wrote down was orange chicken..." In other words, no admission of the error, even though our entire party heard the word "lemon" communicated quite clearly. We were in a hurry and didn't want to make a big deal out of it or wait for a correct dish to come out of the kitchen (not that our server offered to fix the mistake or even apologize!) So we ate the orange chicken. Probably won't be back. read more

Please read this review. I'm giving China Wok two stars ONLY because their food was actually really good. But unfortunately, their customer service isn't on par with their food. My family and I came here on Christmas Eve. They forgot to bring 3 entrees to the table which we ended up cancelling, we didn't get rice with any of our other entrees, my sister ordered fried rice, BUT got rice mixed with soy sauce instead. Nobody came by to refill our drinks, not once. To be fair it was a bit hectic, but how are you so under staffed on a holiday? The icing on the cake was the check. Nobody brought it to us so we got up and headed to the front desk to pay behind 4 other people waiting to pay their tab. BUT, the lady at the front desk kept taking phone orders which left us waiting for about 15 minutes. It got to the point where every time she picked up the phone people in line started laughing as she took down more phone orders. This place definitely puts $ over it's customer service which is a shame because again the food is actually good. Because of this experience we won't be back. If you want great food AND great customer service I suggest Gyromania right next door. read more

The Kung Pao chicken, all white meat is delish, bean curd (tofu) dishes are good. I've had shrimp , beef and pork dishes from this restaurant and all has been good. Soups are good. I like the Hot & Sour. Prices are quite fair for the quantity of food served. We do mostly take out and by the time we get home from picking the food up it's still hot. You'd be hard pressed to get a salad dressing drenched sandwich and organic kettle chips from Quiznos for that price! I was heading back home after buying some ridiculously expensive prescription cat food on the other side of town, and I realized I was hungry. I'd seen this place on my last trip from that-a-way and decided to finally stop and check it out. I pulled into the parking lot, and from there, I couldn't quite make out if the place was open or not. In the setting sun, their 'open' sign looked off, and their neighbors looked closed also. I sat for a moment in my car, and watched as another person parked in front, somebody ran out to check the door to see if they were open. She pulled on it and it swung open. I turned off my car and followed the other person in. Inside the place was dark an cool. An asian lady looked at me expectantly, and I asked for a seat. She quickly ushered me to a booth, and a menu was placed before me. I flipped through it and lots of stuff intrigued me. But I've discovered that my tradition for new Chinese restaurant is to try out the combination fried rice. A guy came over and put in front of me a basket of crispy chip-style things in front of me, a small bowl of sauce, and a pot of tea. I poured myself a cup of tea and tested out a chip, it was tasty. I tested a chip in the sauce. and it was really good. As I waited for my fried rice, I ate chips. I have a bad habit of doing that, I'll eat chips if they're in front of me. Even if I'm not hungry, I'll just keep eating the things. It's the reason a tube of pringles is a single serving if the movie is good enough. It's weird. My fried rice showed up before too long, and being the idiot I am, I said 'yes' for a second basket of chips when the guy asked. I dug into the fried rice, and found shrimp, pork, cow, and chicken. Everything was cooked well. and I enjoyed each part. I managed to get through about half of the plate before I was stuffed. I drank some more tea, and kept munching on the chips until the guy came over with a box. I took a moment to listen to the music that had been playing. It sounded like the demo button had been pushed on an electronic keyboard. It was entertaining. The check came, and it was $10.50 with tax & tip. Pretty cheap. It was good. I guess they also do takeout stuff. Good food, fairly cheap, and local dining. All good things. I might be back to check out their menu further. read more

I've been going to this place for years. More often than not I just get take-out which is always hot and ready when I get there. If they tell me to be there in 15 minutes to pick up I get there in 12 and it's just coming out of the kitchen. Ordered take-out tonight for the 200th time. Figured it was time to write about them. We always go with some staples, Fried Rice, Lo Mein. Personally I like their sweet and sour soup. The times that I have eaten there have always been enjoyable. It's generally quiet and they get you in and out quickly. It's right around the corner, it's quick and it's enough food. It won't blow you away but it will fill you up and keep you full for at least 45 minutes. 15 more than the average Chinese food. read more

Our favorites are the Three Flavor Kung Pao which is packed with delicious peanuts amidst the flavorful meats and mushrooms. The Shrimp with Cashews has a light creamy sauce and is full of cashews and crispy diced veggies. We usually get the Three flavor sizzling rice soup which features plenty of crackling sizzling rice poured into the soup, giving it a pleasing nutty taste. Ever since my family and I moved to SCV from VA almost 1.5 years ago, we've been on a quest. I am happy to say that, after visiting China Wok for the first time last night, our quest has finally come to an end. We ordered sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, kung pao chicken (my baseline comparison dish), wonton soup, hot and sour soup, fried shrimp, egg roll, fried wonton, and paper-wrapped chicken. Everything I listed was at or above our hopes and expectations. The most surprising hit was the paper-wrapped chicken. We'd never heard of it, but it was absolutely delicious! Anyway, here's the verdict: If you're unlucky enough to find yourself driving along this trailer-park-peppered stretch of Soledad Canyon, keep driving. Unless you're subsisting on a diet of pure vegetable oil, you won't find anything of nutritional value here. I was hoping this place might be a throwback to those Chinese American restaurants that served up fat egg rolls stuffed with ground pork, but all you get here is the same lame cabbage-filled spring rolls available at any Panda Express. The lo mein is good if you're starving, but Arby's curly fries are cheaper, and they're just two miles away. read more
