Another great night at Soba. It somehow manages to stay effortlessly cool while the rest of us are just trying to make it through a Wednesday. The funky vibe never disappoints, and the servers were friendly and attentive without hovering. My husband and I kicked things off with the Spicy Pork Lettuce Wraps, which disappeared way too quickly. I ordered the Tuna Crispy Rice with spicy tuna, crispy fried sushi rice, jalapeño, and avocado. It was the perfect balance of crunch, spice, and freshness. My husband went with the Chirashi Bowl, packed with tuna, salmon, hamachi, roe, seaweed salad, avocado, shiso, chives, and sushi rice. We wrapped things up with the Chocolate Maki, because apparently "we'll just skip dessert" is something people say but never actually do. The dark chocolate mousse, chocolate pistachio crêpe, and pistachio cream were rich, decadent, and worth every bite. Soba continues to prove that even a random Wednesday can feel like a night out. Guess we'll have to keep coming back for quality control. read more

Very nice ambiance, loved the vibe immediately upon walking in! We got the crab fried rice and the korean-style red snapper. The portion size was bigger than we thought it would be for both dishes! Unfortunately, we did find both dishes to be too salty though :( They were really generous with the crab in the fried rice & I really liked the addition of corn, chili, and cilantro! The red snapper was cooked pretty well, it wasn't dry at all. However, the pork belly that came with it was mostly fat :/ If I came back, I'd definitely ask for less salt in my dishes. We were able to walk in on a Thursday dinner & get seated right away without a reservation :) Server was nice! We booked our anniversary dinner at Soba, and they did not disappoint. We had a great table close to the opening with fresh air and seats to see the dining area and bar. Our server was very sweet and helped us around the menu. We started with the spicy tuna roll and dumplings. The dumplings tasted fresh. The spicy tuna rolls was huge and could almost be your whole meal. The rare tuna had a nice char on the sesame crust. The branzino was served in a delicious panang curry. We left very full. Well this was my first time and it did not disappoint! We got lucky and got street parking very close by - the restaurant was not very crowded tonight - but mad e reservation just in case (highly recommended). We started with the crispy tofu and kimchi pancakes - while I don't eat tofu on a regular basis - I have to say theirs was sooo good! When I needed to adjust the reservation, the staff did a great job of responding promptly online via the OpenTable app. The ambiance is on the darker side and cozy inside. However, the service was still super slow; it took us almost an hour to get our food (2/5), and they accidentally brought us the check before our food. The soft shell crab dish I got was incredible - with lobster red curry and ginger fried rice. I did ask about spice level and they said it was spicy but that you couldn't request for lower spice, which is understandable. Gorgeous restaurant with a water installation, cool rocks to set your chopsticks on, and dim lighting. The service was prompt and attentive. I asked our waiter if the portion size of chirashi was good and he said it's a good size and that they have carry out boxes if I don't finish. Tell me why this was the smallest chirashi I have ever seen anywhere. The slices of fish were thinner than the sliced ginger. If you stacked all of the slices, it would make a normal size of one piece of nigiri. The slice of tuna was so thin, you could see through it, much less taste it. I was still starving after and got the fried chicken nuggets which were a good portion, with good crunch. The sauce on the chicken was devoid of flavor except for the SALT. They were even able to take the chicken flavor away from the meat which is kind of an accomplishment in itself. My friend got the Sichuan pork dumplings and the dumplings were drowning in soy sauce so much so that you couldn't taste the Sichuan spice (if there was any). There's a sushi restaurant nearby that gives me food poisoning every time I eat there and I would have much rather have eaten there than Soba. I would definitely recommend this place to my enemies because they'll leave broke and still hungry. read more

We dine frequently at Soba and have always found the experience to be rewarding. This could be a five star restaurant if they could just tone down the spice levels of some of their tastiest dishes. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere pleasant. You are surrounded by muted lights and soft music. It is just plain comfortable. My favorite is the shiitake mushroom egg roll appetizer albeit too spicy tonight. The tiramisu was a good ending to our family dinner on the upper level. Excellent menu. Usually quite good except for one off night. We have been several times. Their food is quite good. Their edamame is, for some reason way better than what you get at many other places. I do however ask them to go easy on the sea salt. The tuna tartare with taro chips was particularly good because the taro chips were great. I also liked the seared tuna large plate. Soba really brings chic date night vibes right to Shadyside. Soba really is the kind of place you could bring a date too, celebrate a special occasion with, or really just get a bite to eat and good cocktail with the girls. We love a versatile queen. Our server Skyler was lovely and attentive the whole night- adding to the experience. I started with the Guava Margarita and boy did she set the tone. Perfectly tart, sweet, and refreshing. All I needed was a beach cabana or an infinity pool and I would've been set. Edamame and tuna tartare came next. Fun fact: I used to sneak edamame into movie theaters in lieu of popcorn. The tuna tartare is not for me, but everyone else at the table devoured it with 0 complaints- so imma take that as a GOUD thing. I ordered the Sichuan Pork Dumplings as my meal and I will say- while they were delicious- I was pretty bummed it only came with 4. It didn't specify on the menu and I didn't think to ask. I was tempted to order another order though, because they were that yummy. Noa got the Thai Chicken Curry which was delightful. It was a hefty portion, the chicken throughout were big ole pieces that were juicy and tender. Mom got the branzino which does come out as the full fishy. She said it was really good. We tried Soba for Valentine's day and were pleasantly surprised. It was easy to find parking nearby and they do offer complimentary valet. We had a reservation and were seated upstairs. I'm not gonna lie, this space is dark. Really dark. So older folks make sure you can take a pic of the menu to enlarge or use your light. It's a great romantic vibe but hella hard to see what the food preparation even looks like. We had to ask our server what herbs were in one dish. We tried the spicy pork lettuce cups that came with crisp little romaine leaves and a dish of the pork that you could add to each leaf yourself. It was not overly spicy and very delicious. We also tried the pork dumplings that came in a really yummy five spice ginger soy sauce. The pork was a denser grind and nicely flavored. For entrees, we had the short rib over mashed potatoes with tempura mushrooms that was very tender and flavorful. The drunken noodles with filet pieces was truly divine. Every time we go, we order the crispy tofu and crispy rice tuna for appetizers. They are excellent! For dinner, my hubby gets the burger and says it's one of his favorite preparations! I usually alternate between the corn chowder soup (amazing), Chilean sea bass or the lettuce wraps. They have such a delicious sampling of food, you can't go wrong. I hate to give a 1 star review, but that's the only way to describe my experience at Soba. The biggest issue was the food. Although the presentation was there, each dish had issues. Most notably the pad Thai noodles were very overcooked and mushy, and the dumplings were not hot. Additional cons that wouldn't be a big deal if the food had been ok: -We were seated in the front corner of the deck, and the water from the rain or condensation was dripping onto the seats. -Bottled beer was served room temperature -The service started off good but the staff did not check on drinks throughout the meal. We had to flag staff down for the check. -I've never had this tough of seaweed on sushi before. It was so chewy that it ruined the roll. The roe was an overpowering flavor too. read more

After many years of visiting Soba, and many good memories and experiences (pre-pandemic) I have to say that the last couple of times we visited were just not good. Pre-pandemic we came here several times a year. Birthdays, anniversaries, friend's birthdays. It was always a great celebrating spot. The last time we came was one of the worst experiences we've had, and I proclaimed I would not be interested in a return visit. I made reservations for my husband's birthday. I made it for 7pm on a Thursday and we were early (6:45ish). I assumed we would be done and on our way in 40-45 minutes. We arrived and were seated in the bar area along the wall, with a mostly empty bar and scarcely seated dining area. Our server came to get our drink orders. We both only wanted waters, but I said I would also like to order an appetizer and went with the tofu lettuce wraps. He left and we chatted for a bit. What I couldn't see since it was behind me, but what my husband saw was our server at another table for about 10-15 minutes socializing with the people there. We continue to wait and wait and still did not see him again. About 20 minutes goes by and he shows back up, no food in hand, and apologies and says he got the order in late. I mention to my husband that I was getting the feeling we were forgot about because we didn't order drinks. And now he hasn't even entered the app order. That's when he says he's witnessed him talking at length to another patron, (who appeared to be a friend) so he is clearly behind. The general theme of the night. Another 10-15 minutes passes and finally our app comes out. So, we waited about 35 minutes from time of order to receive our app and he only stopped over once to let us know the app was delayed. He tried the whole drop and run routine, but I was not having that I said we'd like to order. He seemed a little surprised, like oh ok, and pulls out a pad. I kept my cool, and let it slide and we ordered. My husband got the salmon, and I ordered the Vegetable Dolsot Bi Bim Bap, no egg. We waited for about 15-20 more minutes before our entrees arrived. I wanted to be gone by this time and if we were waiting on appropriately, we should have. When my food came, and I started eating it I found it to be so overwhelmingly vinegary. It had kim chi but this was so one note and consuming, just not good. I picked around the bowl and decided I was done with it but would take the rest home thinking I could maybe pull out the remaining tofu, which was the best part, and add to my own rice and veggies. My husband was also a disappointed in his dish. He looks forward to salmon for his birthday but the overall quaintly wasn't there. We wait a while more as I was birddogging the room on the look out for our once again MAI waiter. I saw him and flagged him down, he saw me and turned around to go out of the room. I was just holding my tongue because I didn't want to upset my husband on his birthday. He finally came back and brought over a couple caramels and some chocolate on a small plate that said happy birthday for my husband. Before he had a chance to split again, I asked for my leftovers to be boxed and the check. Took another 5-7 minutes when he came back with the check. I quickly signed it and said let's go. He never brought the leftovers out and I said I am not waiting any longer. Can't imagine another return this was a very unpleasant experience from start to end. read more

Soba is (was) our go-to restaurant for the Big Burrito Group when it comes time to celebrate a special occasion and we are typically never disappointed. Alas, some good things have come to an end. At Soba, we typically try and get the booth opposite of the giant wall fountain. How absolutely disappointed we were when our waitress informed us that it was not working. Oh well,...on to the food - I started with the Thai Corn Chowder which was SUPPOSED to have super lump crab meat in it along with roasted corn. I found about 5 corn kernels in the soup, and absolutely no lumps of crab,...only strands. For $12, I expected more,...a lot more. Then I ordered what I didn't know was a chicken sandwich called the Soba Chicken Sando. The word "Sando" refers to a Japanese-style sandwich, short for "sandoitchi." It is supposed to be served on soft, crustless white milk bread called "shokupan". When I read the description on the menu (the item isn't on their online menu), nowhere is it mentioned that it is served on any kind of bread, let alone what it was served on (a Giant Eagle-like bun). If I knew it was a sandwich I would've never ordered it (guess I better brush-up on my Japanese). The chicken was flavorful and moist,...I will give kudos for that. I took half of it home; big mistake as the bottom of the bun got so soggy I had to flip it over and eat the rest of it as an open-face chicken sandwich. The sandwich was supposed to have come with tater tots; the waitress asked if I wanted the tots or a salad. I opted for the salad which was basically iceberg lettuce with some chopped peanuts on it (glad I don't have a peanut allergy because the waitress didn't ask). The salad I'm guessing also had little chunks of papaya, mango, and daikon with just enough miso dressing (which was actually pretty tasty). The other thing the waitress didn't tell me was that there was a $2 upcharge for the salad. So, my new policy is that if I see an upcharge on my bill and I'm not informed of it beforehand, it's coming out of the server's tip. We'll probably head to another Big Burrito restaurant for our next special occassion. read more

Our waitress did an amazing job, no mix ups, everything was out in a timely manner The space and ambiance is beautiful. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the bar area, the outdoor seating AND indoor seating. Such a spacious place. Free valet parking outside also. The food was good. We shared a bunch of apps. I think I liked the apps better than some of the entrees. The Scottish Salmon entree was a star. It was stellar. My favorite entree. Pad thai was just okay, the salad was just okay, the tuna tartare might be one of my favorites in all of Pittsburgh! So there were items that definitely stood out and some that I would sub next time. I brought my husband here for his birthday and it was so special to be welcomed with a birthday card signed by the staff! We were early for our 5:30 reservation, but were seated immediately and actually were the only people in the dining room for quite a while. Service was friendly and quick, but our meal was nicely and intentionally paced. The entire experience was relaxing, with warm decor, and a great soundtrack. We started with the Short Rib Bao Buns, which featured juicy and flavorful meat. Then, we selected a daily special Szechuan dumpling - my favorite item of the night. Absolutely LOVE this place! I've gone at least twice and gotten takeout before too and it never disappoints. It's modern Asian fusion, and the menu consists of a mix of unique and classic small plates and really hearty, comforting big plates. Out of all the dishes I've tried, some standout ones would be the chirashi bowl, chicken bao buns, korean style miso halibut, and thai chicken curry. Chefs kiss. Also -- you have to save room for dessert. They have really fun and creative Asian inspired options like black sesame creme brûlée (to die for). Inside ambiance is gorgeous -- it's dimly lit so super intimate and romantic, and decorated beautifully. Would be perfect for a date night, a fancier dinner with friends, or taking your parents when they're in town. Service is always exceptional and makes you feel really well taken care of. I'm allergic to shellfish and our waitress was super accommodating and warned me about a few dishes that weren't advertised anywhere as having shellfish. She made some fantastic recommendations for shellfish free dishes that were amazing. We had the spicy tuna roll, the double salmon roll and the yellow chicken curry noodles.
