Went back for a dinner a year after the big "under new management" change. Interesting findings. -- Egg Rolls: A little small, a little dry, but nicely crisp, old school celery filling, and VERY intense BBQ pork flavor inside. Almost like a pork bun. A little above average thanks to the flavor. -- Chinatown Ribs: Not available when they first did the new management thing, but their signature babybacks are back, at least as a special. A different cut from the spares, these are a little pricey at $28, and odd cutting-- some wide, some narrow-- but very thick (2" in spots) and very juicy. Just enough glaze, and thankfully not all over the cross sections, because these fresh-cooked ribs have nothing to hide and need no crutch (I'm looking at you, Jasmine Garden). Very pleasant flavor. Near-elite. -- Yu Hsiang Beef (on a combo): Yes, they do dinner combos. The beef was very tender, with pleasant spicy flavor and sweetness to balance it out. It seems the sweetness is a new twist; I preferred the version I had twice a year ago that was much more spicy and savory, but this was good. Nice assortment of peppers and wood ear mushrooms. Above average. -- Spareribs (on a combo): Had to try these too. These changed a little from a year ago (previously near-elite once and elite once)-- not as thick and no scoring of the surface. Delicious glaze, but dry and probably a reheat. Will definitely get these again, but as a full order, not as extras plopped onto a combo. A little below average, but still some good signs. -- Pork Fried Rice (on a combo): Dry. Muted flavor. Below average. -- General Gau's Chicken: Very crispy and staying crispy throughout the meal, these flattened, bumpy mini cutlets had quality chicken, good tenderness, and a complex sauce mixing heat into the sweet the way the General is supposed to but which most don't. Caramelly delicious. Near-elite to elite. Some bumps in the road still, but still plenty to like. read more

Chinatown on Cobbs Corner has taken a bold step for this area of the South Shore--and so far, it is succeeding. Chinatown now has dim sum--clearly, made fresh--on weekends. It even has a smaller dim sum menu on weekdays. Wow! The prices are not cheap, but certainly very reasonable for the quality. On a recent "solo" trip, my three choices were two dim sum classics: shumai, tofu skin rolls, and a fried offering of shrimp and chives in a wonton wrapper. I will start with the shumai, which were large and juicy and full of meat and large chunks of fresh shiitake mushrooms. Delicious, and better than any shumai I have had in New England. You get four large steamed shumai (in the bamboo steamer) for $7. That is not just fantastically tasty, but also is a serious bargain! My other steamed dish was also very good. The steamed tofu skin rolls are thicker (more pork) than one might find in traditional Boston dim sum halls(, and the traditional Cantonese in which they're served is not full of cornstarch (as so often is the case). The bamboo shoots in the rolls also have flavor. More like you might find in Hong Kong, and three large rolls for $7. This is a standard-sized dim sum order at established halls. Good job Chinatown! The people who serve you are kind and chatty (you won't find such people at the usual bustling halls!). They are happy to make suggestions, and to bring your dipping requests (soy, chili oil, hot mustard etc.). I believe 5 different people waited on me and/or stopped to chat. Very nice atmosphere. My third item was good, but nothing special. The fried shrimp and chives dumplings were small and tasty (called a "rangoon" on the dim sum menu, it's really a simple shrimp and chive deep fried dumpling. The shrimp and the chives were fresh, but at $7 for 3, it was the least stunning of my orders. The prices are generally $7. The menu is divided into steamed items, fried items, and weekends only. Their xiao longbao comes as 6 pieces (generous) for 6 buns. The weekend choices include stuffed eggplant and stuffed tofu ($7). I will note that they have chicken feet, steamed spareribs and tripe steamed with ginger EVERY DAY (all at $7). As I had (wrongly) believed their dim sum offerings would be frozen (as is the case with most dim sum restaurants) I didn't order the har gow, as the frozen ones have thicker and chewier wrappers. When I was assured that they were indeed homemade har gow, I promised myself I would return soon! It's a very clean and airy restaurant, like many of the Chinese restaurants in America during my childhood (but no tiki torches!). With a proper sushi bar, it's a great place to take out of town guests. read more

Chinatown Stoughton has a lot of posters indicating they are trying a lot of new stuff, dim sum, lobster I got the hand made noodles dish from their summer specials and it was good. My husband got ma po tofu and he was very very happy with it. Chinatown Stoughton is in the Cobbs corner complex. It looks and feels like it's had a long tenure there as in it feels like one of the Chinese restaurants I would have gone to with my parents 30 years ago. Familiar and pleasant. No tea, but the food came right out and we got our fortune cookies. Will definitely be back. Haven't had dim sum in ages. read more

Wow, that was the worst lunch I've ever had from a Chinese restaurant. I'm sorry, but it was that bad. Rice was gross too. How can you mess up pork fried rice?! Plus it wasn't cheap. Went here for their new menu Dim Sum. Service was a bit slow but the restaurant was clean and had ample space. They charged $2/pp for hot tea. Dim Sum was decent, fairly priced. I forgot to snap a photo of the soup dumplings. My dumpling didn't have soup (maybe it leaked). I would go back for more dimsum since it's the closest spot for it in the south shore area from where we live. Note: Dim sum is only served on the weekend. read more

We were in the neighborhood that day and decided to give Chinatown a try as it was previously recommended by a local. I was surprised to see a restaurant in Stoughton serving Dim Sum so we were excited to try! We were given menus to mark and order off of, I'm not sure if they have dim sum carts. I think it is a little expensive compared to other dim sum restaurants closer to Boston, however, if you're nearby and want to avoid traffic or a long wait, it'll satisfy the craving. Bonus, you can also order sushi and other Chinese dishes at the same time. For dim sum (4/5), we ordered chicken feet, steamed salted egg buns, steamed rice roll, and siu mai. The siu mai are actual house-made siu mai and not the little frozen ones that some places serve. Chinese food and sushi were standard, no complaints there. Never got to try the food here. I was promptly seated, then waited for 10 minutes and they basically empty restaurant for lunch, and no server came to take my order. I politely said goodbye to the hostess in Chinese and then left. This used to be a great place, but I don't know what happened. This restaurant is terrific and I am going to make it my life's mission to eat here whenever possible! My mom brought my toddler last week and raved to me. My mom generally refuses to get Chinese because she says it never tastes good like when she was a kid, and it's never worth the disappointment. They got pork fried rice, beef with broccoli, and chicken wings. She told me the beef with broccoli was terrific, the pork fried rice was incredible and the pork was actually soft and nice "like it should be" (lol). She said the chicken wings could be crispier, which is a fair point. That said, I tore into those leftovers when we got home, and they were perfectly delicious cold straight out of the fridge. Of course we had to go back the next night. We got general gau's, which was terrific, scads better than I've ever had before. I was craving sushi so I got the belt meal, and the sushi was fresh and delicious with fabulous fish and rice. We also got wonton soup, one of my all time favorite foods. The broth is so flavorful and the wontons are perfection. I was floored, and frankly I struggled to share with my daughter, who also loved everything she ate. Also important to note the staff were so kind to us and sweet with my daughter! I will be back, and I plan to order wonton soup for takeout every time I pass through Cobbs Corner. Went with a few friends on a recommendation and it was "meh". I got Moo Goo Gai Pan and it was decent, though it could have used a few more pieces of chicken. The Pork Fried rice was barely warm and VERY dry, and the Chicken Fingers came out of the breading when you took a bite. The waiter was totally stressed as if this is not his usual job there. I will say that the place was clean and presentable, which was good. Overall, not a place I would go back to given that there are so many better places around. read more

Went here with a friend. I ordered chicken and broccoli. The chicken was cooked fine but the broccoli was raw and the florets were large enough to need a sharp knife or a steak knife to cut into bite size pieces. Seemed nearly impossible to cut the raw broccoli with table knife without struggling. The server was attentive and came to our table often to check on us. Been meaning to post about this business. The original owners are back as the son who was running it has since moved on. Their nephew Kevin is taking the helmet. They have been working on the recipes and adding new items. Kevin and the team really want to know what's good and bad and why so that he can let the kitchen know how to correct any issues. They are now using a 16/20 shrimp in most of the dishes, the product has no additives and tastes great!! Salt and pepper shrimp, ginger and scallions, can't go wrong. They have a hand pulled noodles now as well, made in house, your choice of protein. Had never been to this restaurant before but thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake. I ordered vegetable fried rice, & chicken teriyaki. The fried rice had almost NO taste. It was if it had been watered down and was just prepared in the usual brown fried rice manner. This order had a couple of hunks of green and red pepper in it with water chestnuts! Yuck! The chicken teriyaki had a very strange taste to it. It tasted as though someone just sprinkled some ginger powder on it. That's it for me! read more

Tried today for first time now that you can eat here. They don't bring tea anymore charge $2 per cup and no more crunchy noodle $2 for those. Slight musty smell when walked in because nothing is updated and still has carpet on floor. Food was okay. Not much flavor for pork fried rice. Decent food. Decent prices. RUDE ABRASIVE SERVICE!!!! We went as a family of 8 to eat there. Our server was a very rude and abrasive man. We would ask a simple question about the numbered plates and he would be be extremely rude and say things like "just pick a number!" in a loud annoyed tone. My elderly mother asked about a menu item, and he would yell "just read the menu!". What a jerk!!!! We have been here before and a nice waitress, but this guy was horrible. Why is he a server? There were several other examples of his complete rudeness. Also, some of us got our food immediately some of us had to wait 30 minutes. Poorly managed food delivery. But, the food was good. If I could give this restaraunt a worse review I would. I went with a friend and the place had three tables with patrons. The server placed the bill on the table and then checked on us about 16 times in the course of 10 minutes. I tried to complain to the manager and I got told to "shut up". My thought is if you're looking to enjoy your meal I would go someplace else. We order takeout from here regularly. Our favorites are the crab rangoons, sesame chicken, HK sweet and sour chicken, and several maki rolls. Tonight, for the first time, we were disappointed.
