It feels like Chinese Canton Bakery is confused about it's own identity. From the outside, their signage leads you to believe you're about to enter a traditional Chinese bakery. Once you enter the store, you might think you entered the wrong storefront. When you walk in, the decor for the name of the place now says Canton Bakery by Meta Sweets in a more modern, whimsical font. Everything is pink. There's nothing wrong with pink but it doesn't match. The vibe inside feels like it wants to be a modern cake/bakery shop rather than a traditional Chinese bakery. Maybe it was or maybe it will be? There are also no actual pastries, cake, or other bakery items in any of the glass display cases where you would normally expect to see items you could order. Instead, they are filled with religious decor or empty. What you can order, you can see as large posters on the wall. A variety of char siu baos (BBQ Pork Buns - steamed or baked), coconut bread, chicken baos. No pricing which I'm not a fan of. We ordered 4 baked BBQ pork buns and 2 coconut bread and the price was more than the 1 order of wings we got next door at Royal Mandarin. The bbq pork buns were kind of dry, at least the bread was. The char siu was good though. I wish they came warm or they would ask if we wanted them warmed. The item to get though is the coconut bread. Soft fluffy bread, delicious filling. They could increase the filling for a better ratio. Come for the coconut bread! I was leaning towards 3 but am bumping to 4 stars. If you're in the area and getting some wings from Royal Mandarin, then stop by the bakery for some coconut bread. Otherwise, I wouldn't make a special trip just for the bakery. read more

One of my favorite bakery; I've been coming here since I was a kid. The inside of the bakery definitely changed; it was like a Mom and Pops bakery back then with fake cake displays, cakes displayed in the bigger fridge behind the counter, small pastries on the front display. I haven't been here as of lately and it's an upgrade. It has cute decors. Customer service is always excellent here. My go to favorite is their coconut bread and bbq pork bun. Since moving up North, it's been more than a decade since I've been back to this bakery. Found out that they're under new ownership but served the same baked goods. When I walked in, the bakery display cases were extremely sparse. Only a few baked goods and a bunch of bags of various potato chips. I asked if they had baked pork buns and the girl at the front had to go back to ask. Thankfully, they had some so I paid for them and waited. They were $3.00 a piece. I wanted to purchase steamed ones as well but they were sold out. I also bought a pack of coconut bread which had 4 pieces for $5.00. I was surprised that I had to wait as long as I did for the pork buns but when we got home and tried them I had a hunch that they had been reheated and not freshly made. Sadly, the taste was good but the bread even though they were still warm, was a bit hard & chewy. The coconut bread however, was the complete opposite. Absolutely delicious! It was soft & pillowy with just the right amount of filling. Unfortunately, it's not worth the 45 minute drive to get there from where I live. OMG just as good as I remember from 30 years ago! The coconut rolls (4 pack) are buttery and tasty. The ube cake was very flavorful and the frosting was nice and sweet. I was able to purchase the following... * Coconut Bread: This came as a pre-wrapped package of four. The bread was sweet, however more coconut filling was needed to balance the ratio. * Curried Beef Pie: Two of these were in my order. The pastry was quite flaky albeit a little dry. The beef filling did have an adequate amount of curry seasoning. * Baked Pork Bun (char siu bao): I also bought two of these buns which were the best of my items. The dough was soft and the minced barbeque pork was tasty. This place is currently open only on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Most people submit their orders online the evening before. That is when you can get the most available variety of baked goods. While the prices were decent, I do wish that they carried additional selections like egg tarts, red bean paste buns, pineapple buns, moon cake, etc. It would make them a more complete, traditional Cantonese bakery. read more

Since under new ownership, the siopao is not even close to the original recipe. The bread is all wrong, and the pork filling is not only tiny, but definitely not the same. Since there are only 4 main items you can try everything for under $14, either a really filling breakfast or breakfast and lunch. The standouts are the coconut bun and beef pastry. Ordered Baked BBQ Pork Bun ($2.5) - the dough was more cakey than chewy and wraps around a balanced combination of sweet, porky, salty, fatty, rich filling. Coconut Bun ($4 for 4) - like a Hawaiian bun with the perfect amount of coconut filling in every bite. it's sweet with enough coconut flavor to balance out the sweetness. it will be the best bite of food you have in San Diego for $1 Beef Pastry ($3) - a perfect balance of beef and sweet onion filling oozes after you bite into the herby, buttery, and flaky crust. I'm amazed how little muskiness the beef flavor has. if this was a French bakery and not a Chinese bakery this beef pastry would be triple the price. Been coming here for over 30 years....im 42 now ...my parents used to take us here when i was 10 years old ...and their pork buns are the best....same the way the made it back when we used to come here 1991 ...buns are always soft and every bite you take always has the filling...our favorite are the pork buns ...we like the bake buns but next time we will try the steamed buns...they have other stuff but for sure next time we are gonna try it...not only that but we used to see a little girl back in the days...we found out she was the one taking orders...and we asked about her father and she told us he is the one still making the pork buns!!!! I can't believe that I've never reviewed this place! This bakery has been here since I was a child, and it still stands firm with the same layout and dessert display cases. The only difference? Everyone knows that their signature item is the Baked siopao. They are huge, fluffy buns of soft, sweet bread that encase chunks of red Chinese pork. It tastes the same every. single. time. and it never disappoints. One bun was 1.25 each when I remembered it and now its 2.50, which is still not bad considering the size. They still have the plexiglass counter right at the door, so you can't enter inside the bakery. Rather, you can look at their menu and order from the doorway. I was confused at first because there were signs on the windows that say For Sale. I asked the older Asian gentleman if this was true and he adamantly said they are open. My family and I have been getting the baked and steamed baos from here since I was a kid (so at least the past 30 years!). The steamed and baked baos are both great but, hands down, the baked pork bao has been my all-time fave. They also offer a 6-inch or 10-inch strawberry cake but I have not yet ordered that. Over the past year, the husband and I have been periodically and exclusively getting their baked pork bao, curried meat pie, and coconut bread here because nothing else compares in the South Bay. We are aware that the owners are planning to sell the space (with no plans to open another location), but the exact date of that is to be determined. It will be a sad day when they end up closing for good :( As of today (December 30, 2022), they are still up and running. The process now is that you place your order at the door and they pack up your goodies in the back. If you're anticipating placing a big order, you may want to order online and schedule when you want to pick up (online orders must be placed 24 hours in advance) to ensure you're able to get what you want. I needed to make a slight adjustment on picking up a fairly large online order, and they were so great about being responsive and accommodating over email! The following are my top three favorite items here that I will keep coming back for-- Baked Pork Bao: Roasted pork with Chinese BBQ sauce encased in dough, baked to a golden brown, and brushed with a sweet wash. So filling and addicting! The sweetness of the BBQ and the sweetness of the wash on the bun pair perfectly with the savoriness of the meat. I feel like they always have a perfect ratio of meat to bao and never feel like I'll just get multiple mouthfuls of bao with no meat. Curried Meat Pie: Curried Beef wrapped in a flaky pastry dough, brushed with an egg wash and baked to a golden brown. This was something that I recently started to get thanks to my husband! After I tried a bite of his, I was kicking myself for not trying it sooner. The pastry dough is deliciously flaky but doesn't have too much flavor. But this isn't an issue because the curried meat filling is flavorful enough on it's own! So good and definitely worth getting. Coconut Bread: Fluffy bread filled with a sweet buttery coconut center. You get four pieces of fluffy coconut bread all wrapped up. Also something I wouldn't normally get as a kid but now it's something that's normally part of my order. The sweetness levels are just right ("not too sweet") and it's sooo good with oolong tea! Like I said earlier, this place has been my family and my's go-to for baked pork baos and you can't find any other place like it in the South Bay. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll stick around for a good part of 2023 before I'm forced to look elsewhere to get my baked bao fix. read more

Came here because a friend told me about this chinese BBQ pork buns (char siu bao). They have both baked and steamed; chicken or pork. I got 6 pork and 2 chicken all baked. They were okay, the filling has chopped chicken or pork with some sauce. I wish there was a little more filling, the bread was also a little on the dry side. They are both good the chicken taste very similar to the pork, so if you're concerned with fat content go with the chicken its not much different. I also got the coconut bun which i read many reviews about, they are good, the bread has almost a hawaiian sweet bread roll texture to it and the coconut filling is tasty, but not enough for me to go out of my way for. If you have a craving for BBQ pork bun this is a good place to fill that need, I'd probably try the steamed one next time. read more

I opted to get a dozen baked pork buns to go, so that I was able to split amongst my family members. The staff quickly went to the back and got my buns, placed in a box, paid, and I was on my way. There were several other patrons also ordering the pork buns, so this place is super popular for this deliciousness. When I bit into the baked bun, the bun was super soft and fresh. The pork is tender, fatty, and ample. What I enjoyed most about the bun is that the filling is decent and didn't skimp. One bun is enough to satisfy one's appetite and meal. We called the phone number and found out that they have a website that they're referring everyone to because they're only open on the weekends right now. We went to the website which was convenient. Once we got there we were able to order what we wanted to pick up on Saturday or Sunday pay for it and check out. The good news is that they sent a confirmation email and receipt to you after you order on the website and all you have to do is on the day for pick up arrive at the time and they have your order hot and ready. The woman who helped me had excellent customer service was very very sweet and I appreciated her packing up my items quickly and I was able to go to the family event that I hosted.
