i think out of all the Valerio's, this location is my favorite. I haven't visited in awhile and came here on a Thursday morning at 645AM and it was busy. I was also surprised to see that they expanded their space that offers seating and a coffee shop! They use beans sourced from Philippines for their coffee. Good move on their end if you want to enjoy your filipino pastry with coffee or tea! My go to items rotate between the Spanish bread, pizza pandesal, and regular pandesal fresh from the oven. For my most recent visit, I was surprised to see they had the ilocos empanada available. Like i mentioned, its been a minute since coming here so not sure how long they've been making them. The last time i had an ilocos empanada was when visited Vigan Philippines in 2017! I ordered on in addition to a chicken empanada and pizza pandesal. I decided to check out the coffee shop and what made me backtrack was that they make calamansi tea (with either black or jasmine tea). Decided to order that and eat the ilocos empanada at the cafe while it was still warm. The ilocos empanada: big portion ($6). You can order with or without cheese ($7 with cheese). I opted without cheese because this is how i remember eating it. It also comes with a vinegar sauce. It was delicious. Perfect crunch. Perfect ratios of papaya, mung beans, meat and egg. Calamansi black tea - yummy as well. Not too sweet. Tasted good with the empanada. I will definitely be coming back for the ilocos empanada. They make them daily and often replenished throughout the day (according to the employee). Parking here may be tight if coming durinf busy hours since it shares the spaces with titas kitchenette (also delicious) and island pacific market as well as other small businesses in the strip mall. read more

Very disappointing experiences. I stopped by a few weeks ago after getting food next door and purchased some stuffed filled breads. I walked up to pay with no one up front and the cashier ignores me and then begins to help another customer that walked up behind me. I had two items and was already waiting to pay. Not saying anything to me the cashier continues to help the other customer and takes about 10 minutes. Figure I'll be nice and wait. The bread was okay. Nothing special. Today, I decided to stopped by again after getting food next door. This time there was a different cashier and no one is paying. I quickly grabbed one item and walked up to pay. Again the cashier ignores me and helps someone else that walks from behind me. While helping me, the cashier gives back my change and it falls all over the place. No word from the cashier. I don't get it. Do these cashiers have no manners or being rude is their way of customer service. The first time they ignored me to help an old Filipino man. The second time they ignored me and helped an old Filipino woman. Very rude in my opinion. I was going to walk out but decided to stay. I even kept my mouth shut even after the cashier spilled my change. I bought their pineapple cheese bread. Figure I'll give it a try. Got home and noticed it was half soggy. Chunks of cream cheese and pineapple spread. Not good at all. I will not be going back to this place. Rude cashiers who think they can just ignore people and give favors to other customers. When you give money back to customers especially coins, why not put it in their hands instead of dropping it into their hands. Better yet, why not take off your stupid gloves when dealing with money. Whoever the owners are, I hope you address this with your staff. Better yet, get rid of them. Your bakery won't last long with this type of customer service and mediocre food. read more

This is for the café portion of the bakery.. For me, the café was just okay. I had been looking forward to trying it after seeing the signs and announcements leading up to the opening. The drinks weren't bad, but they also didn't leave much of an impression. There was a $0.75 upcharge for a milk substitute, which I understand is fairly common. However, when combined with the overall pricing, it made me question the overall value. With so many other café options in the area, I found the prices a little high for what was offered. I was hoping for something that felt a bit more memorable or unique. Hopefully they'll continue to grow and refine things over time, because it's always nice to see a new local café succeed. read more

Another spot if you're craving Ilocos Empanada and looking for Filipino pastries and breads. I bought (to-go) the last two (2) empanadas at around 9:15 a.m. An easy option with no pre-order needed and no limited days availability. Crunchy and full of delicious fillings. Stopped by because we searched for Ilocos Empanadas and since we used to come here in the past when we lived in San Diego, we figured we'd give them a try. The lines can get long so be patient. We ordered the Ilocano Empanada and it was huge. But, yup there's the BUT... There was no flavor and I ran out of vinegar. One whole container (that they give) was not enough. This was a huge disappointment to me. I asked my friend how she liked it and she said the one she had in Hawaii was much better. Everyone in my party said the same thing. They just opened a coffee shop, so I wanted to give them a try. I ordered the iced ube latte with oat milk. It was good, but for $8.25 for a 16 oz (their largest size), I don't think it was worth the price. The small is only 12 oz, so the portions are definitely on the smaller side. One thing to be aware of--I paid with a $10 bill, so my change should have been $1.75, but I was accidentally given $3.10. I returned the extra, but it's something they may want to keep an eye on as they're getting started. I'll definitely be back to give the Milo Mocha a try. Hopefully that one wins me over! read more

This was our second time to visit this place and because we just had lunch a couple of doors down we could have done more damage here... like our first time here! So, if you never had a pandesal and you love bread, you must try this! Get them warm and fresh, with butter, OMG! But, they have so many other desserts and food bites to try. We specifically came for the fresh pandesal, which I was craving and my husband, the best, searched for a place to enjoy some fresh pandesal. I laughed because after waiting in line in front of me, an older Filipino Lola in line got to the front and asked for Chicken Empanadas. If you're looking for authentic Filipino breads, Valerio's is the spot to go. They have posters up front explaining their legacy and how long they've been a part of this community (and for good reason). I tried two pastries from here: starting with the Pan de Ube (5/5), which was an incredibly soft bread, packed with a generous serving of ube. I also tried a pack of the ​Mini Ube Ensaymada, which came with nine pieces. These were so soft and creamy (and a bit dangerous to have around, as they're so addicting!). Their is a mix of ube paste and cream cheese inside and topped with an interesting take of cheddar cheese. ​The prices are super reasonable, but take note they are takeout only. Would I drive over 40 minutes to come here? Absolutely yes. And I did. Multiple times. My top three favorites are the Ube cheese roll, the regular classic cheese roll, and the ube pandesal. literally the absolute best. Super fresh. Still really great the next day if it lasts that long in your household because it barely lasts that long in mine. DELICIOUS CARBS (5 stars) You aren't Filipino unless you've had a fresh warm pan de sal from the streets of the Philippines. Valerio's comes second best when you from the states. I grew up having to escort my Lola or parents to (different) Filipino bakeries since i could remember. Although I didn't grow up in SD, Valerio's is everywhere and I use to buy my pastries with them in SF all the time. I've reduced my carb intake but occasionally I'll crave a hot pan de Sal. This is actually my first time in a Valerio's in SD (and I've been here approaching a decade). It's in a plaza I frequently shop at. This is also the smallest Valerio's I've walked into, it's literally a shoe box with one Tita running the register. They are cash only if your purchase is less than $6. To not be wasteful I asked if they sell individual pan de sal and was told YES. Tita went to the back and got me a pipping warm fresh pan de sal. I also ordered a cream cheese pastry. My total was only $1.45 and I only had card. Tita told me she will pay for me even though I offered to run to an ATM. So sweet! I did come back and paid her back which she didn't expect and didn't want me to. Thanks for taking care of me like that! Bakeries like this will also be a sense of home to me. Been coming here for as long as I can remember, 20+ years. I love how they renovated and made the bakery more modern. They even have a rewards program. They have always been consistent with quality and quantity. The cheese rolls are my families absolute favorite, they do not skimp on cream cheese, they are fully loaded, every bite is heaven. I love coming in here and seeing all of the new items. They always keep up with trends. Mochi donuts, Dubai chocolate ensaymada's, Ube ensaymadas, Spanish bread, Ube crumble cookies, turon, pandesal, cheese balls etc. Everything you get here is so so good. They definitely bake with love. They do get pretty busy, so if you have a big order, I recommend you preorder. This bakery is located off Plaza Blvd, in National City. My wife and I randomly went here craving some ensaymadas. As I was in line, I suddenly noticed a pack of Dubai Chocolate Ensaymadas that I've never seen before. I had to try them out. I was here just for Thanksgiving and it wasn't here then. The guy behind in line asked if the chocolate ensaymadas were any good. I told him I've never had them before. Come early to get the good stuff! Coming from out of town we always like to buy bread and pastries to take home. I arrived just alittle after 830am and there was already a line of people paying and the shelves were looking empty. I was planning on getting some mini pan de sals and some cheese bread. They didn't have anymore mini pan de sal nor did they have any of the cheese bread. They only had the regular sized pan de sal so I grabbed 4 bags and they had other pastries but the cheese bread was the only other thing I wanted. I'm addicted to their cheese rolls, back in my hometown there's a Filipino bakery that makes something similar but smaller and they call them lady fingers but these cheese rolls are basically the size of a maple bar donut and are a load of cream cheese filled sugar topped goodness. Perfect ratio of bread, cheese, and sugar I've tried the ube version as well and it's good but I love me some valerio's cheese rolls. The turon is better on some days than others from my experience, the first time I ever got it it had this perfectly crunchy sugar coating on the outside it's almost like the turon was encapsulated in a layer of caramelized sugar and was hands down the best turon I've ever had because of that, however, another day I got the turon and it didn't really have this coating and was a bit soggy. So if it looks solid/dense and super encapsulated in the sugar it's a good turon day but if it looks a little floppy then maybe not, it's still good but I'm telling you with that solid sugar coating it's a next level turon! The first time I actually got it from the smaller cash only location down the street next to Manila seafood but I don't like that location as much bc they run out of some of the items some days then the second time I got it at this location so I'm not sure if it was just the day or if it's location specific since I've only been to each location once. I'm curious to try their karioka/cascaron next time and they had a trendy item the Dubai chocolate ensaymada that sounded interesting. Typically bakery queue system. There are prepackaged items around the store and at the front register that you can grab then there's the case with the trays of baked goods that they'll put in bags for you. Feels like home with the Titas working behind the counter of this casual bakery. I'll definitely be coming here again! This location is great because you can make it a whole lunch by going to Tita's kitchenette next door and getting a plate of Filipino food! First timer here. Wowowowowow. I moved in down the street and drove past thinking "this place looks good, I'll stop in and try it". Silly me didn't know I was stumbling upon such a historical gem! One word. Incredible. I came in early morning with my toddler and as a very pregnant woman, this was my absolute heaven. I came in for the pandesal with ham and cheese and ended up leaving with a little bit of everything. (Pandesal, cheese roll, Bavarian cream pastry, pandesal with ham and cheese, chicken empanada) Every employee was so kind and patient with me as they helped me navigate the pastries that were all new to me- you can tell they are a well oiled machine. When I shared that it was my first time, one of the kind gentlemen looked at my receipt to make sure I got the best things and even threw in a fresh warm empanada on the house! So kind and thoughtful, truly made my day. I took a bite of the cheese roll when I got home and almost got in my car to head back and buy more. They are known for their Pandesal breads and Malasadas but the only item I ever seem to walk out with are the Ube Crinkle Cookies. Sometimes they have a more intense nutty Ube flavor than the last batch; however, this last time they were very bland and chewy like mochi, rather than cookies. Came here to try your Mango and Pandan Cheese rolls. I was highly disappointed, thinking it would be as good or even better than your original cheese rolls. Firstly, there was no butter on top. And no sugar but covered in powdered sugar which made it so messy to eat and handle. May I suggest using Sugar in the raw to add a subtle crunch. Secondly, NO CREAM CHEESE?! I found a mediocre slice of cheese in both my rolls. Bring back the cream cheese!! And may I also suggest adding perhaps a mango jam to the mango roll or macapuno strips to the pandan roll? Because i honestly didnt taste any mango or pandan in any of the rolls, to me it was just the color. You guys are totally onto something. And there's always room for improvement. Other than that.
