Everything mochi bagel 5/5: so fluffy and light yet still tastes like a bagel. Can be a lil salty on the top where the salt is but contrast with parts that dont have it. Egg sando 5/5: yummy and filling, has cucumber and the milk bread is thick and so fluffy! Chicken katsu sando 5/5: my favorite. I love the spicy mustardy sauce not sure if it's in the actual brown katsu sauce or separate mustard. My bf didnt like it but i loved it! Chicken also juicy and soft. Friend wanted to check this place out in San Diego. The pastry case looked very promising as the presentation of each individual pastry was very detailed. There were about 12 people ahead of me but it didn't take too long to order. I was eyeing the garlic butter croissant but the couple in front of me took the last one :( so make sure you come early if you're trying to get the popular pastries! First off tried the matcha croissant. I love matcha but wasn't really a fan of the croissant. I rarely tasted any matcha flavor, and did not really like the addition of the cream..but to each their own! I really liked the roe baguette , savory and crispy made a perfect snack. Food/drinks 3/5: We got a strawberry matcha, truffle fries, the egg sando, and chicken katsu sando. The matcha was unfortunately super watery and you could barely taste any matcha. As a truffle lover, I was super excited for the fries, but both my friend and I agreed that we couldn't taste any truffle. The sandwiches although did save this meal. The curry bun is to die for! Get it toasted. Biting into this was like biting into warm fluffy goodness... the flakes on top of the bread really made it. The filling made this really hard to put down Nagoya karage sando. Their milk bread is amazing! It's my favorite part of the sando. It is so soft like a cloud. The marinade/glaze on the chicken is sweet and savory. Overall, we got tired of the mayo but that's just a personal preference. This was my second visit here, and I have to say I left with mixed feelings. Both times I came on a weekend, so I was fully expecting crowds and a bit of a wait. My first visit was definitely a better experience than my second.This time, there was a huge line outside, and I ended up waiting over 25 minutes. What was frustrating, though, was that the line was only to place an order. There were plenty of empty tables inside, so it seemed like the bottleneck was the ordering process rather than a lack of seating. I completely understand waiting if the café is full, but seeing so many open tables while everyone stood in line to order made the process feel pretty inefficient. They also got my order wrong. I ordered a hot latte but was given a different iced drink instead, and I later realized I had actually been charged more because the iced drink cost more than the latte I ordered. Mistakes happen, but I hope they can improve the ordering process and double-check orders before they're handed out. That said, the pastries were excellent. One thing I really appreciate is that they're not overly sweet. They have just the right amount of sweetness, which makes them easy to enjoy without feeling too heavy.I still like this place and would come back for the pastries. Got to ASA Bakery about 5-10 mins before opening and were already third in line... definitely a good sign! Tried a mix of savory and sweet: the Curry Pan was good but didn't totally wow me, while the chocolate, strawberry ribbon, and matcha croissants were all really solid -- especially because they weren't overly sweet. The surprise favorite was the caviar bread: salty, fishy, briny topping on crusty bread that somehow just worked SO well. We also split a croque monsieur which was warm, cheesy, and perfect to balance out all the pastries. I wish they had real cutlery (vs only plastic disposables) for dine in customers. Quality of their food is superb. I've tried their cafe latte and matcha latte and it's nothing out of the ordinary. Their omelette beef hayashi was ok. After a Padres game we decided to walk over to this cafe. The space is nice and roomy with lots of tables and counter for working or just hanging out. We arrived later in the day so there weren't many baked goods left. That's okay, we only wanted some drinks. We ordered an iced strawberry matcha and a iced hojicha latte. The matcha was good but tasted like Nesquik strawberry milk, but it wasn't bad just not traditional matcha tasting. On the other hand, the Hojicha latte was delicious. Such a super cool Japanese bakery. First off, there are so many interesting pastries to choose from. Everything looks so delicious. I have had quite a few different ones and every single one has been fantastic. The last croissant I had had a strawberry buttercream that was rich without being too sweet. They've also got savory stuff pastries as well like curry bun kinda things which are also really good. I can't possibly describe everything you'll just have to go and check it out. They've got a full cafe menu as well with sandwiches and plates. I really love the hayashi rice which has this beefy sauce over it. You can get it with chicken katsu which is just so crispy and perfect. Also got an omlette on top which is fluffy and a nice bit of added protein. Lots of coffee and drink options here as well. I haven't had the coffee yet but the matcha is great. You can even get it with cheese foam which is one of my favorite milk tea toppings. Options here are seriously endless. Definitely a popular place and I usually have to wait in line for 15-30 minutes on the weekend, but I think it's definitely worth it. There is also an incredible and well hidden speakeasy here called bar Kamon. The vibe is a lot of fun, and the drinks are very unique and Japanese inspired. Such a cute bakery/cafe! Came here for lunch for the first time and tried out the sandos, picked up some pastries, and had their limited Hokkaido soft serve. The staff are all so nice, service was quick, and everything tasted delicious. The sandos are a great value because they're filling and taste amazing! I got the katsu sando, but I got to try the egg and Italian sandos from others in my party. I opted to get the truffle fries combo, and even though the fries didn't taste very truffle-y, they still tasted good. My favorite pastry I tried was the everything mochi bagel, it was chewy but still nice and airy, and it went well with cream cheese. The curry pan was also delicious, but I think I'd like to try it fresh the next time I don't order a sando. The strawberry cream ribbon croissant was also so good! Love this bakery! They have a great space in East Village with a nice interior seating area (and speakeasy) and a patio seating. They have a great variety of pastries, drinks and food. I only wish I had gone earlier in the day for the most variety of pastries. While the line to order took a few minutes, you could tell that they put a lot of care into making the drinks and providing great customer service. For today's visit I got the hojicha latte for a little pick me up and probably one of the better ones that I've had. Excellent flavor that balanced out the espresso. I also ordered the chicken katsu hayashi - I typically only liked katsu sauce or curry on top but this one was good! Asa has been sitting in my Collections for so long and I'm grateful that I was finally able to try it on a recent trip to San Diego. Parking around is mostly street parking. We arrived on a Wednesday mid-morning and were able to snag a table to sit and cowork while we enjoyed our goodies. Wifi is solid and the tables are spacious enough to spread out with laptops and pastries. We sampled the strawberry cream ribbon croissant (so stinking cute), the cinnamon rolls and the melon and early grey pan. This was my favorite. It was so fluffy and just slightly sweet. After some focused work, I fueled up with the egg sando with lemon pepper salad. I only wish I knew there was wasabi on the sandwich (not my fave, but it wasn't so overpowering that I couldn't enjoy the yummy combination of fluffy eggs and fluffy bread). This cafe had all things that catered to my taste, so I had to stop by while in San Diego. Who doesn't like some unique pastries and equally unique caffeinated drink to start your day? Service here was great- the cashier was super sweet and made friendly conversation. I got the Tiramisu matcha latte while my boyfriend got the Tokyo Banana latte and both were delicious. We got 6 pastries to share (saved some for later) but our favorites were the mentaiko baguette and the matcha croissant. (~15 minutes) Food and drinks are ordered at the counter and seating is self service. Staff warmly greeted us and patiently answered our questions. They have both indoor and outdoor seating which made it very convenient. We opted to eat in as it was a bit of a windy day. My husband and I ended up sharing the Omelette Beef Hayashi and Egg Sando. I wasn't sure what to expect only having eaten the Hayashi rice that comes in the S&B box. The beef was a bit chewy but the egg was luxuriously creamy and the Hayashi sauce was rich and homey. It made for a very hearty dish. The Egg Sando was my husband's favorite. The bread in the Egg Sando was soft and fluffy while the egg salad filling was perfectly seasoned and spot on delicious. The miso really shined through, but I was unsure if it was balanced and well-rounded. * Lime Tart: Probably our favorite thing here, actually! The brightness of the citrus stood out but was not overpowering. It had a light, custardy flavor. * Berry Melon Pan: Standard classic melon pan with a subtle berry filling. It is more of a coagulated consistency rather than a jammy interior like we initially thought, but not bad. * Chicken Katsu Sandwich: The shokupan had a nice bounce, and their chicken was nice and juicy. * Matcha Tiramisu: Even though I am an avid lover of matcha, this might have been too much. My son and I came in to work our first time here and needed up having an enjoyable time. The food is pretty delicious. We both had the chicken katsu sandos with side salads. I had an iced green tea and he he a matcha latte. Everything was flavorful and cooked really well. I wish that substitutions and modifications could be done on the food. I wanted to get the montecristo sando but don't eat ham so tried to sub it out for turkey or chicken but was unable. The service as good as was the ambiance. The only thing was the bathroom. I am so happy I got to try this bakery! I've been eyeing it for over a year! I came here with my friend and we were so excited to try one of everytime but we limited it to our top picks. When we walked in, it was so pretty inside, still decorated from Christmas which was nice and the line wasn't long at all. We got there around 10 am. The employees there were very patient while we decided what we wanted and even offered to toast some of our baked goods for us. We ordered a Miso Croque Monsieur, a Shiso Bacon Epi, a Cinnamon Roll, a Strawberry Cream Ribbon Croissant, a Chiffon Fruit Sando, Chocolate Naruto Croissant and for drinks I got an Ube Latte which was caffeine free and I'm not quite sure what my friend got but it looked pretty good. The Miso Croque Monsieur was amazing! It eas two sliced of milk bread with ham ans cheese in the middle and then topped with cheese and toasted. It was such a good choice! The Shiso Bacon Epi was very hard and salty. I'm not sure if this is normal but we took one bite and decided against eating any more of it.. The Cinnamon Roll was very nice, hence and good flavor but did feel a little heavy. The cream on top was very well made and complimented the Cinnamon Roll nicely. The Strawberry Cream Ribbon Croissant was amazing! So light and flaky and yet filled inside with strawberry cream in a delicate way not making you feel heavy or bloated after. It was probably my favorite thing we got! The Chiffon Fruit Salad was so light with airy cream and the bread was very bouncy but also had some structure to it. Idk how they do that! The strawberries inside were fresh and it was such a nice choice. The Chocolate Naruto Croissant was a little too from, the chocolate broke off the croissant when I took a bite but thats okay, and to be honest jt didnt really impress me unfortunately.. i think I've had better rolled croissant. This was one block away from another bakery on the same street so 7 of us girls decided to try it because the 2 nd bakery we wanted to try was closed on Mondays. The pastries looked good. We decided to take it home to eat. I ate mine that night the strawberry bow shaped one, has a strawberry cream filling. Great spot although a lil sketchy area or at least where I parked and walked a couple blocks to the cafe (I was visiting for a work trip so not familiar with the area). Food and drink though were great!! I got the chicken katsu sando and oat milk matcha latte. Simple and delicious, just how I like it. I came in on a Friday just before lunch. There were people with their laptops which looks like a nice spot to work if needed. Loved the vibes here! Lots of light inside and cute decor. I also thought the pastries all looked really pretty! I came sunday morning and luckily the line wasn't too long, I waited about 20 minutes. I ordered a vanilla latte, matcha latte, curry pan, fruit danish, honey toast and a ham, cheese and avocado croissant. All of the pastries were really good except for the honey toast. I think since it wasn't warm anymore the honey made the bread too hard and a little stale. Next time I would ask them to re-toast it. The matcha latte was also a little too light for my taste but not bad and the vanilla latte was standard. So happy I left my N. County bubble to come indulge in your tasty delights! This little East Village bakery has built quite a reputation for its phenomenal food. Even at 3 pm on a weekend, your long lines and crowded tables show that you're not a "hidden" gem anymore. Although you were out of many bakery items (must go earlier!), there was still the popular curry pan, which is understandably popular...yum!! Also tried your egg sando...wow, the soft milk bread holding the creamy egg mix was the perfect combo. My only small complaint is your customers' restroom, which is located in the very back area next to your storage closet. It looked like it was shared between customers and employees. Overall, I can definitely overlook my tiny complaint for the delicious culinary baked treats you share. It brings up wonderful memories of my Japan trip! read more

I came in for breakfast with a friend on Sunday and stayed awhile for lunch with my boyfriend. The line is still outside the door but goes pretty quickly. I chose some pastries to go, a Monte Cristo sandwich, and later had the hayashi. All the food was great! I got the tiramisu matcha, but preferred my boyfriend's hojicha. I chose to sit outside, but inside is so spacious as well. Cute spot! Coming back because there's so much to try. read more

It was my last day in San Diego and I wanted to bring home some bakery treats, so I stopped by this Japanese bakery. Everything was freshly baked and delicious. My favorites were the Naruto and the French toast--both were so good. I also tried the matcha tiramisu, which was a bit disappointing since it mostly tasted like regular matcha. I went around 9:30 AM and there was a short line, but it moved quickly. Overall, a great spot for fresh Japanese baked goods! read more
