ASA Bakery is a Japanese-inspired bakery that focuses on fresh baked goods, pastries, and café-style items with a mix of traditional favorites and creative flavors. We walked into a modern space with a clean, inviting layout that makes it easy to stop by for a quick pastry or pick up a few things to share. The selection is one of the biggest draws, with everything from classic Japanese breads to savory items that make it feel like more than just a dessert stop. The display cases are well organized, and the visual appeal of the baked goods adds to the experience before you even order. The pastries are where ASA Bakery really stands out. The curry pan is one of the highlights, with a crisp exterior and a savory filling that makes it a satisfying snack rather than just a bakery item. The croissants are also worth trying, especially the matcha croissant, which has a buttery flaky texture with a matcha filling that adds a slightly earthy flavor without becoming overly sweet. The matcha comes through clearly, and the croissant itself is well laminated, with the right amount of crispness on the outside and a soft, airy interior. The melon pan is another classic option that delivers the soft bread interior and lightly sweet cookie-like topping that makes it a staple in Japanese bakeries, staying true to the traditional version while feeling freshly made. The savory menu adds another reason to visit, especially the katsu sandos. The cutlet sandwiches have a nice balance between the crispy fried filling and the soft bread, making them one of the more memorable items on the menu. The bread stays soft and pillowy, and the cutlet holds its crunch even against the sauce, which is a detail that often gets overlooked. Items like the hojicha latte and other drinks pair naturally with the pastries, making ASA Bakery feel like a place where you can sit down and enjoy a full café break rather than just grab something quickly. The drink menu is thoughtfully curated and complements the baked goods without competing for attention. Service is friendly and the bakery has a welcoming atmosphere, although popular items can sell out depending on when you visit. The staff are knowledgeable about the offerings and happy to guide you through the selection, which is helpful given the range of choices. The shop gets busy, especially during peak hours, so going earlier gives you the best chance to see the full selection. The pace of the visit stays comfortable even when the line forms, and the team handles the flow efficiently. ASA Bakery is a great spot for anyone looking for Japanese-style baked goods with a mix of sweet and savory options. The combination of quality pastries, unique flavors, and a comfortable café setting makes it a place worth returning to, whether you are picking up a quick snack or settling in for a longer break. It delivers on both the familiar classics and the more creative offerings, leaving you with the sense that you have found a bakery that takes its craft seriously.

12/10 !! Super delicious, clean & lots of places to sit, friendly service. Will definitely be back for a matcha!

Oh my bagel!!!!!!! If I lived closer, I would have this bagel everyday. So doughy, soft, light. The selection of baked goods here is top notch. The croissants, donuts, pastries were just toooooooo good. I could see myself working here everyday if I were closer. It's a cute coffee shop setting where you can catch up with friends or get some productive work done. The onllllly drawback is parking. Needs more loading zone parking so you can get your goodies and go!!!

I had really high hopes for this place but it unfortunately did not live up to the hype. Came here for dinner with a friend and it was pretty empty. Food/drinks 3/5: We got a strawberry matcha, truffle fries, the egg sando, and chicken katsu sando. The matcha was unfortunately super watery and you could barely taste any matcha. As a truffle lover, I was super excited for the fries, but both my friend and I agreed that we couldn't taste any truffle. The sandwiches although did save this meal. I did enjoy the egg one much more as the katsu one had a strong vinegary sauce that was overpowering the whole sando. Service/Ambiance 4/5: There was plenty of seating and the workers were nice. We were really hoping to try the shrimp sando but they were out. Don't think I will be coming back to try it though.

The curry bun is to die for! Get it toasted. Biting into this was like biting into warm fluffy goodness... the flakes on top of the bread really made it. The filling made this really hard to put down Nagoya karage sando. Their milk bread is amazing! It's my favorite part of the sando. It is so soft like a cloud. The marinade/glaze on the chicken is sweet and savory. Overall, we got tired of the mayo but that's just a personal preference. It has a strong wasabi-like tasting undertone We came at 1:30pm on a Monday (Holiday) and most pastries were already sold out! Highly recommend coming in the morning. It's pretty spacious inside and I like how there's outdoor seating as well

This was my second visit here, and I have to say I left with mixed feelings. Both times I came on a weekend, so I was fully expecting crowds and a bit of a wait. My first visit was definitely a better experience than my second. This time, there was a huge line outside, and I ended up waiting over 25 minutes. What was frustrating, though, was that the line was only to place an order. There were plenty of empty tables inside, so it seemed like the bottleneck was the ordering process rather than a lack of seating. I completely understand waiting if the café is full, but seeing so many open tables while everyone stood in line to order made the process feel pretty inefficient. They also got my order wrong. I ordered a hot latte but was given a different iced drink instead, and I later realized I had actually been charged more because the iced drink cost more than the latte I ordered. Mistakes happen, but I hope they can improve the ordering process and double-check orders before they're handed out. That said, the pastries were excellent. One thing I really appreciate is that they're not overly sweet. They have just the right amount of sweetness, which makes them easy to enjoy without feeling too heavy.I still like this place and would come back for the pastries. I just hope they can smooth out the ordering process because I think it would make a big difference to the overall experience.

Got to ASA Bakery about 5-10 mins before opening and were already third in line... definitely a good sign! Tried a mix of savory and sweet: the Curry Pan was good but didn't totally wow me, while the chocolate, strawberry ribbon, and matcha croissants were all really solid -- especially because they weren't overly sweet. The surprise favorite was the caviar bread: salty, fishy, briny topping on crusty bread that somehow just worked SO well. We also split a croque monsieur which was warm, cheesy, and perfect to balance out all the pastries. I wish they had real cutlery (vs only plastic disposables) for dine in customers. Our family shared all these goodies and a plastic knife was no match for some of them. Overall, really good quality pastries and breads, worth the early lineup. I'd definitely come back to try the sandos (served started 11:30)

Stopped in on their seasonal drink event day for a Tokyo Banana Latte and it was delicious! Walked in stood in line while looking into their baked goods case so much to choose from. Menu from breakfast items and at lunch & Dinner they do have Sandos & Hayashi Rice plates Everything I ordered was very tasty and good specially the Lemon Cream Brioche Bun and Matcha Kinako Donuts . The Shiso bacon epi was good but too tart & sour flavor from the umeboshi . Don't forget if you love Japanese style milk bread pick up their Shoku Pan yummy! Inside space open and good seating area with outdoor patio , logo merch and more Excellent Service !!

Came here a few times for pastries and have not been disappointed. My go to are the curry bun (so flavorful!), Almond croissant, matcha croissant, and the everything mochi bagel. Quality of their food is superb. I've tried their cafe latte and matcha latte and it's nothing out of the ordinary. Their omelette beef hayashi was ok. The beef was thin long strips , kinda hard to eat, and the sauce was a bit salty for my taste. Def love their pastries more. (Hence the 5*) Staff here are nice and helpful. They provide wifi but not many outlets. Only street parking avail so that can get tough sometimes.

This was sadly such a miss for me. Portions were small, the parfaits lacked flavor and uniqueness. They were pretty to look at but that's about it. We also ordered the egg salad sando and that was extremely disappointing. Both the texture and flavor were extremely off. Parking was also difficult and the surrounding area is very unsafe. Would not recommend.

After a Padres game we decided to walk over to this cafe. The space is nice and roomy with lots of tables and counter for working or just hanging out. We arrived later in the day so there weren't many baked goods left. That's okay, we only wanted some drinks. We ordered an iced strawberry matcha and a iced hojicha latte. The matcha was good but tasted like Nesquik strawberry milk, but it wasn't bad just not traditional matcha tasting. On the other hand, the Hojicha latte was delicious. This latte has quickly become my go-to whenever I see it available. I'm going to come back after the Padre game.

Not a whole lot to choose from here. What they said was a mochi bagel was really just bread. Honestly it was quite gummy and off putting with no semblance of mochi at all. It didn't resemble a bagel in taste or texture. I purchased 3 pastries here and, unfortunately, all 3 were a disappointment. Service was fast. It was actually nice to have outdoor tables to sit at. Inside was rather small.

Such a super cool Japanese bakery. First off, there are so many interesting pastries to choose from. Everything looks so delicious. I have had quite a few different ones and every single one has been fantastic. The last croissant I had had a strawberry buttercream that was rich without being too sweet. They've also got savory stuff pastries as well like curry bun kinda things which are also really good. I can't possibly describe everything you'll just have to go and check it out. They've got a full cafe menu as well with sandwiches and plates. I really love the hayashi rice which has this beefy sauce over it. You can get it with chicken katsu which is just so crispy and perfect. Also got an omlette on top which is fluffy and a nice bit of added protein. Lots of coffee and drink options here as well. I haven't had the coffee yet but the matcha is great. You can even get it with cheese foam which is one of my favorite milk tea toppings. Options here are seriously endless. Definitely a popular place and I usually have to wait in line for 15-30 minutes on the weekend, but I think it's definitely worth it. There is also an incredible and well hidden speakeasy here called bar Kamon. The vibe is a lot of fun, and the drinks are very unique and Japanese inspired. So glad to have a place like this in SD, don't miss out.

The matcha was creamy, rich, and not overly sweet, which I really appreciated. One thing to know if you're ordering matcha or a latte--they only offer oat milk, not almond milk. My husband loved his coffee and said the espresso was smooth, flavorful, and let the coffee shine without being overcomplicated. The shop itself is really cool too. Wait outside on the sidewalk (no exterior seating) and someone will come to take you inside. Do not ring the door bell. The theme is to take it slow. Each customer typically waits 20-30 minutes to enter as part of how they do things, even if there is open seating inside. Not sure if they use a timer to space entries but it seems consistent. They take one group in at a time. Interior: A few tables around the wall and then bar seating. Would not recommend for parties greater than 2, there just isn't the space. They welcome service animals, babies/children and strollers from what I observed. The music was very, very loud. It was difficult to hold a conversation. I did not see a bathroom. Ordering process: After seating you wait for a little bit for them to bring small water cups and a QR menu with a table number and a set of rules. They do not have a physical menu, you must use your phone to order. Cell phone reception was dicey and took a long time to load. They have an interesting concept where you have a digital 'tab' open on their toast website. Unfortunately you must provide your full name, email and phone number. They have pour over drinks (note these can take 15-20 minutes), matcha, Hojicha and others. You may only order one drink per person at a time. They have a small snack menu with rotating foods. They use oat milk only. No substitutions allowed. After mobile ordering, drinks take 20-30 minutes as part of their take it slow vibe. Matcha $8 is from Paru tea and was very good. Hojicha $8 was too milky and didn't have a strong enough flavor. When you are done you walk to the register by the door and wait to be checked out. If they are making a drink you wait until they are finished. I wasn't really a fan. Staff were brusque. Music was too loud to converse.

Five different matcha drinks were offered along with hot and cold coffees and lattes. The top three matcha choices were priced at $8 each. I chose the Ordinary Pleasure which was the first one. Pandan sticky rice milk and mango puree were added to the matcha and topped with a salted coconut foam. I wasn't a fan of the foam, but the matcha flavor was intense and contrasted by the fruity puree on the bottom of the cup. The baristas were very focused with measuring the exact amounts for each ingredient in the drinks they were preparing. The matcha quality seemed to be very good based on what I tasted so maybe it's why the price was $1 higher than what I have tried elsewhere.

I honestly expected this drink to be very gimmicky and too sweet but was surprised when it seemed to strike the perfect balance. I could taste both the matcha AND the mango puree AND the salted coconut foam without one overpowering the other! What delicious witchcraft is this? The mango was subtle but there. The drink was creamy and thick. Such a refreshing summer drink! The cafe itself is super cute and quaint with a trendy, boho chic vibe. Baristas were super friendly. I would come back again!

This summer we made it a mission to find the best example of a "mango sticky rice" drink and we…read morewere fortunate enough to find Its Cafe Thai. The drink exhibited every core to the classic Thai dessert and there was really little room for improvement other than the ratio of rice to coconut blend could be evened out. However, sipping the cocosmoothie with bits of rice made up my mind as I can confidently say this is #1. If you're looking for something different and tired of the conventional smoothie or milk tea, come experience this. Give some patience as orders are made fresh from this small hole in the wall. I plan on returning from LA as soon as possible.

I questioned about the taro in the Taro Thai…read morecoffee & it seems that it's not fresh taro but a power that they use in their taro milk tea. The barista mentioned that it is on the sweeter side. When this was mentioned I felt like it would be a good pairing because the Thai coffees that I am used to having are typically on the strong side. I also heard from another customer that the Thai coffee had a slight mocha taste to it which I thought was interesting. I'm indifferent to powdered taro milk teas, although this one in particular, I did not enjoy. It was thick and sludgy, with an undertone of medicine reminding me of pepto bismol. The color was lovely, but not the taste. I wouldn't order this particular drink again. The drink I chose was medium size and it was only $5.38 (or 5.83, I can't remember & I don't think I got a receipt) ish which I can appreciate! The top portion of the drink was the Thai coffee and I really did like the flavor. Next time I'll get a different drink for sure! My friend tried the Green Thai Tea for the first time and really enjoyed the flavor of it. It had a floral jasmine + vanilla taste, a little bit on the sweet side-- but refreshing and delicious. The prices are pretty good (coffee and milk teas) and they also have smoothies (which can be on the more expensive side $9-12). Water cup is free upon request. They also have only a handful of seatings, but it's a nice area to walk around. They have umbrellas as well, but they do need a heavier stand for windy days as I've witnessed it fall into a car several times. Other than that, I recommend checking out It's Cafe Thai in Barrio Logan!

Sadly the ice cream shop was closed when I came back around 2pm. I found that to be odd, or perhaps it was open~ it was dark and doors were closed. But anyways, thankfully, Dark Horse Coffee Roasters was still open till I believe 3:30pm! (I went on a Sunday). They have indoor seating and a big space outdoor for seating. We found parking on the street, no paying needed. They also have a bathroom, which is nice, but most people don't ask for the key (since it's essentially open, only locked when in use). The door is frosted and you can see the outline of someone as they stand near it. I think it could be a little more frosty! There were a lot of workers the day I went and they were nice. The prices were good for specialty lattes and the guy informed us that both sizes use the same amount of shots (2), the only difference is quantity of milk! I got a classic, $6, 12 oz Iced Salted Maple (S'Maple) Latte. It was good, but I wouldn't mind if the salted maple was more flavorful. It's quite subtle! The outdoor space is really great for meet ups with large groups of family/friends/work. I think this location is really lovely and would recommend people to come check it out!

Solid coffee recommendation…read more I've tried their hot oat milk latte and their iced vanilla oat milk latte and actually finished both before going cold/melting, respectively. They only have two breakfast sandwiches and two bagel options. They make for a nice light breakfast but emphasis on the LIGHT. For $10, it leaves you wanting/needing more for sure. Nice outdoor seating areas and they keep a clean bathroom. No frills service inside. Just a counter with some warm smiles behind it - you order and you walk back up to pick up when it's ready.
