Petals of a Peony is one of the best restaurants in Memphis, and I wish I had tried it sooner. I…read moremade the mistake of assuming it's just another American Chinese takeout spot. It is not. It is a Michelin recognized (i.e., fancy) authentic Szechuanese restaurant. While I can't comment on the authenticity, the flavors are deeper and bolder than any Chinese cuisine I've ever had. My brother and I fight over which is better, the boiling fish or the dry pot. Really, everything we've had has been excellent. It's possible to go affordable here with something like a fried rice dish, but I recommend being adventurous and trying something new. Every dish is sharing size and a table of two could eat their fill with one or two dishes. They get busy during peak times but they're good at turning tables and I've never had a bad wait. I'll note that the food comes out suspiciously quick, seemingly regardless of what we order it takes around 5-10 minutes, even when we brought a larger party.

FAVORITE SPICY FOOD OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE…read more I legit am in love with this place. I LOVE how the food had spice but it isn't overwhelming. It adds to the flavor without being the only thing to the food. I just wish I had more people who liked spicy food to come eat here with me. I came back with some friends from out of town and it was still amazing. My fav thing is still on the Lunar New Year Menu: the Sichuan Mala Dry Pot. It had amazing flavor, good spice, and everything in it was just awesome. I've found a similar thing on the regular menu so I won't have withdrawals except for the fact that I genuinely want to eat here every week and can't hahah To try: Mapo Tofu Appetizer: Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce Edamame Beef Spicy Crispy Chicken Sichuan Style Fried Rice Dandan Noodles Spicy Dry Noodles Loved: - House Special Mala Xiang Guo Dry Pot - Lunar New Year: Sichuan Mala Dry Pot (ABSOLUTE FAV) - Peony Chicken Liked: - Beef and Broccoli - Fried Rice: Yangzhou Style - Lunar New Year: Homestyle Whole Fish - Lo Mein: chicken, shrimp, and extra spice - Twice Cooked Pork Ok: - Tea: Jasmine - Lunar New Year: Garlic Pork Ribs Disliked: - Lunar New Year: Four Happiness Meatball - Traditional Kung Pao Chicken

They even had cute little keychains for sale, which was such a fun touch. The staff were kind, attentive, and made the whole experience feel enjoyable without being overbearing. The highlight, though, was the Peking duck. We ordered the whole duck, and the portion was huge. There was more than enough to share, and every bite was packed with flavor. It was crispy, tender, and easily some of the best Peking duck I've ever had. Everything about the visit made me want to come back. Great food, friendly service, and a really pleasant atmosphere. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for amazing Peking duck.p

The rice came out first then we started with the braised tofu and bok choy. Next came the fragrant eggplant. It was tender and the sauce complimented the vegetable. The Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce was delish. The best dish of the night was the beef flat noodles. I have had this dish at other restaurants and tonight's version had an excellent flavor. The beef was velvetized and so tender. Service was great. Our server was very nice and helpful. The ambience is always pleasant. I was happy to see the restaurant with many customers and I saw many people pick up several take out orders. Food was super good tonight! I will return to try other dishes.

I loved the Thai Curry Shrimp Wontons but they aren't as shareable as I was expecting. I was thinking they'd be special dumplings but it was more like a dumpling soup. I really liked the Ma Po Tofu which was unexpected because I usually don't like tofu. But this tofu was super soft and decently flavorful. The Egg Drop Soup was very flavorful and doesn't have the weird aftertaste that some of them have. I wasn't as impressed with the Ma La chicken as I hoped so I wouldn't get that for myself again but everything else was delicious and I'd get it all again. The Vietnamese Coffee was really cool. It reminded me of one I'd read about recently in a book about Vietnamese restaurants. Surprise, I'm a nerd. It was cool to experience IRL something I'd just been reading about. The Thai Iced Tea though was not my thing. My friend who is into that specific type of tea said it was really good so please listen to her, not me since I am really weird about tea. I have been here multiple times and enjoyed all the menu items I have tried. I love the chicken wings. They are fried well and seasoned to perfection. I ordered the rice bowl this time. It was good but not my fav dish. The dumplings were tasty too. Service was very good. Our waitress was nice and helpful. Decor is very unique and pleasant to admire. I will return to get those chicken wings for sure.

When you walk in you'll check in with the host to be seated. The restaurant feels like a super cute, casual ramen shop vibe right in the heart of Memphis. For food we started by ordering the crawfish dumplings (crawfish, shrimp, cream cheese & togarashi). The dumplings were good, almost like a take on a Crab Rangoon but with shrimp and crawfish. For entrees my partner ordered the Big City Ramen (chicken broth, chicken thigh, ajitama, corn & menma) and I ordered the Spicy Pork Ramen (miso broth, pork chashu, soft egg, scallion, nori). The Big City ramen had a really good balance of flavors and wasn't too spicy. The spicy pork ramen was good but a bit like on the spicy side. For dessert we ordered the Thai tea dessert which was really well balanced and a perfect way to the end the meal. Highly recommend stopping by Good Fortune if you are in the Memphis area.

My go to order has to be the chicken w/zuchinni and mushrooms (extra chicken). If im super famished, I will add shrimp toast. Wangs is one of the few restaurants I know that serves shrimp toast, and they do a great version. It can be a little greasy at times, but I can usually just remedy that with some paper towels. The texture is amazing and the flavor is exactly what I want. Someone said the pan fried dumplings are a must have, and I will have to try those next time.

BEST FRIED DUMPLINGS!…read more I still love this place and drop by for their dumplings whenever I'm in the area. Their spring rolls are also yummy. The Dragon and Phoenix was just meh. The shrimp was good but there wasn't as much as I would've liked. But the breading on the chicken was too much for me and I just wouldn't get that again. I can confirm, having tried two more breaded chicken dishes, that I do not like the breaded chicken here. I will stick to the grilled chicken.
