This place is really close to where my work is currently located but I hadn't ever heard of it. A coworker wanted to eat here so we stopped by. I'm pleased to say everything was amazing! I loved the Thai Curry Shrimp Wontons but they aren't as shareable as I was expecting. I was thinking they'd be special dumplings but it was more like a dumpling soup. I really liked the Ma Po Tofu which was unexpected because I usually don't like tofu. But this tofu was super soft and decently flavorful. The Egg Drop Soup was very flavorful and doesn't have the weird aftertaste that some of them have. I wasn't as impressed with the Ma La chicken as I hoped so I wouldn't get that for myself again but everything else was delicious and I'd get it all again. The Vietnamese Coffee was really cool. It reminded me of one I'd read about recently in a book about Vietnamese restaurants. Surprise, I'm a nerd. It was cool to experience IRL something I'd just been reading about. I was excited to visit upon getting off the road from Texas and wish I'd chosen almost ANYWHERE else! I ordered the Singapore rice noodle dish like last time, the only dish I'd tried there, and got sweet sour sauce on the side. The waitress acted annoyed at my request for a clean glass and regular menu inquiries which was off putting but I stayed anyway. My wife and I have eaten at Asian Eatery at least 5 times. It's become our go-to place for lunch when we're in Memphis and don't have much time. Food is great, especially the hot-and-sour soup. However, we had an experience during our last visit that made us discuss whether or not to go back to this place. Apparently, there was some issue with a customer, who happened to be African American. The owner came out and told the server that "these kinds of people always do things like that," in a voice loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear. At the time, there were two African Americans in the restaurant, one of whom was my wife. Unfortunately, the owner knows almost no English, and I know even less Chinese, so I simply explained to the server how I saw things, asked her to communicate it to the owner, and decided to write this review. The bottom line is that the food is good for the area, but very basic Asian, and a good price. The problem is the owner's attitude, which is unfortunate. Even if the food were truly outstanding, we are unlikely to return to a place where the owner clearly doesn't really want my wife there (although heretofore always glad to accept our cash). read more

I've twice reviewed this restaurant and rated it very highly. Not this time. My wife and I visited for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Service was a little slow, rather perfunctory, and unsmiling. Not outright bad. But certainly not praiseworthy. The dishes we ordered were tasty, but I had the impression their portions have recently been made deliberately smaller. I'd never, till now, left the Asian Eatery with my hunger unsatisfied. I would hate to see this restaurant descend into the utter mediocrity heralded by the service we received this last time. Good service, this restaurant needs to grasp, means much more than merely bringing out the food the customer has ordered. But perhaps this was just an "off" day. Another update. Things have changed, and not for the better. I still love the fact that kids work the front of the house. I'll probably keep going back because of this. It's still convenient, quick, and courteously staffed. What it's not anymore: that good or a gem of a value. The food has become more bland, the portions smaller. The soups are still very good, but everything else is rather ho-hum. That's a double whammy that justifies the 3 star knock. And to be sure, experience allows reflection. Asian Eatery, when I first gave it 4 then 5 now 2 stars should have been 3.5, 4, 2. The experience mentioned above? I've been eating East Meets West more often. Urban Fusion is better by a bit. New Asia, despite the revamp, is a solid go-to (the dim sum is very, very good- they do quality where Dim Sum King has quantity and variety). I haven't eaten inside in awhile, and that might have something to do with it. They opened the extension awhile back for a roomier feel. Same decor as it ever was. But, if the difference is that the food is better when one eats inside (and I live 5 minutes away), then the lack of flavor in an order to go isn't an excuse. read more

I was shocked by this place. It looks like nothing from the outside, but was actually really nice. They do have the crappy sweet and sour styrofoam chicken, but the soup & other chicken dishes were good. Service was kinda crappy, but it wasn't on the server. She was working her butt off, it's the lack of workers. The wonderful server was serving, hosting, and answering the phone while still doing a decent job. Hubby wanted Thai food tonight, but we didn't want to trek to Bartlett or Cordova from Collierville. Also didn't want to pay the high prices of Bangkok Alley. We tried out Asian Eatery in Germantown and everything was delicious!! All was served hot and fresh, very flavorful and they had stuff the little kids liked too. The ease of ordering our food Togo was great. When we arrived to get our food, the checkout/pickup process was great and customer service was excellent. Now for the food, AMAZING!! We got the Summer Rolls, Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Egg Drop Soup, and Chicken Lomein. The summer rolls were very refreshing with a great peanut sauce. The chicken lettuce wraps were really good with fresh crunchy lettuce (serving of the chicken filling could have been a little bigger). The Egg drop soup was the best I've had in Memphis. On a recent take out order, our soup croutons were missing. The manager/ owner was rude. Said she packed it in the bag. Not!!! Thought I was lying. Maybe it's just me not being from Memphis but the food handling is just not sanitary at all I left my un eaten pad Thai because the girl serving my boyfriend and I touched the food on the plate when handing the plate to me anyone who's worked food knows that's not acceptable and on top of it her fingernails were extremely dirty, there was definitely dirt under them and she wreaked of BO. This place must have changed management or something because the last time I went was horrible. I'm a regular and have been here several times. Lately the staff and service has been super bad. To sum it up my last experience was a 1.5 hour wait. When I noticed that the ppl that walked in after me had already finished dinner and were leaving.... I got up and paid for my summer rolls and left. The staff weren't giving any attention and actually were laughing when I was trying to address my issue. I did occasionally ask about how much longer the food would take because I have a 1 year old and they kept repeating that the food is being made and needs 5 mins. They said this like 4 times!! After seeing some yelp reviews, I came here for the first time in second week of January '18. And that was enough to keep me glued to this amazing Asian restaurant. What have I tried here: 1) Generally tso's chicken Recommended-Yes If you like a bit sweet taste in your chicken, you would love it. 2) Sesame chicken Recommended-Yes Although I felt sesame and general tso's Chicken to be almost similar. 3) Mango chicken Okay. You have to try this. It's very different and a but similar to orange chicken, but not totally. If you don't like too sweet, you can ask them for making it extra spicy for you. I have done that and it tastes amazing. 4) Spring rolls They we're okay. Nothing too awesome that I would recommend. But not a bad option for an appetizer. 5) Singapore noodles Recommended- Hell yes!!! If you like spicy tell them to make it extra spicy for you. You would love it!!! 6) Pad thai noodles Recommended-Yes But if given a option between Singapore and pad Thai, I would opt for Singapore. 7) Thai curry red Recommended-Definitely This has more gravy/curry to it if you don't like dry chicken. It's base is I guess coconut milk and it tastes quite amazing. 8) Chicken dumplings They we're okay. Nothing too awesome that I would recommend. But not a bas option for an appetizer. 9) Coconut yellow Curry chicken Recommended-Definitely This has more thicker curry than the red curry. And if you like Indian food, you would love this one. Infact next time I am going to have this!! 10) Thai basil chicken Recommended-Yes I felt this to be a bit similar to Thai red curry. You can customize almost everything with beef, shrimp and chicken. Also, you can customize the spice level in every dish. I love their portions. And the menu is priced decently. I am definitely going back again to try their other dishes. I love this place! The service CAN be slow at times, but the food is awesome. The shrimp pad Thai is my personal favorite, as cliché as it is, but they season the noodles just right, and leave the lime on the side so it tastes as fresh as possible. The seafood is consistently cooked to the right texture, and always tastes fresh. We always go out for Asian food on Christmas as our Jewish family tradition. This year, I wanted to find somewhere new and asked around. We live in Memphis and don't get out of the "loop" much, but I took a good friend's advice and gave Asian Eatery a try. Am I so glad I did!!! The place is quaint and lovely and super clean. Everyone was more than helpful and attentive. It was relatively quiet when we first got there (we were very early for dinner) but it soon picked up with phone orders and many more customers. We ordered crab wontons and edamame to start. The crab wontons were perfect. Extra delicious, fried perfectly, and presented beautifully. Even my 6 and 7 year olds ate them up! My son had the egg drop soup and oooed and awed over it. My daughter split sweet and sour chicken with him and they nearly ate the whole dish despite both taking about how full they were. I had the Cantonese Fried Rice. Oh my GOODNESS! I typically wouldn't just order fried rice as a main but I was intrigued by the spice level noted and vegetables I added chicken. It was incredible. It felt like a little explosion of the best savory and spice mix with just the right heat. Husband ordered the Devil's Nest soup. I could tell it's spice level lived up to its description as I found him coughing and wincing a little (he likes things HOT!). Our family LOVES this place. We eat here at least three times a month. The food is consistently fresh tasting and delicious. We've sampled just about everything on the menu, but our favorites are: Chicken Pannang (all white meat chicken and super fresh veggies) String bean beef (quality beef and crunchy green beans) General Tso's chicken (sweet, spicy, and fried perfectly) Egg rolls (delicious) Tom Khai soup (save the left-overs because it's even better the next day for lunch) Keep in mind that it can take a little time to get your food if there is a large crowd, but it is WELL worth the wait. You will not be disappointed! Tip: If you get take-out, ask for the freshly made sauces (hot mustard and duck sauce) to be added in place of the standard to-go packs. It makes all the difference. Decent Asian food in Memphis? Seriously? I am a bit of a food snob especially when it comes to Asian food but I was pleasantly surprised while dining at Asian Eatery.  Asian Eatery does a good job of representing pan Asian cuisine by delivering dishes from China, Vietnam, and Thailand. We ordered spring rolls, pho, General Tso's chicken, Kung pao chicken, chicken satay, and wonton noodle soup. Everything was flavorful and cooked well. Not to say that everything was 100% authentic but the food was still good. It hit the spot since I had been eating mostly BBQ and fried chicken during my trip. I was expecting to pay more but was glad to see that the average plate was around $9.  This wasn't the best Asian food that I've had but given the area, I would go back again. SUPER ASIAN This is the best Asian place in Germantown! Worth the wait! Visited on 9/27! Coconut shrimp They were great! I like the sauce to go on the shrimp! Took a lot of time for one meal. Lettuce wraps They were okay because they fell apart. You need a sturdy structure for lettuce wraps, but the filling was great! Lettuce tasted fresh. You put chicken mix on the wrap with hoisin sauce. Crab wontons Great! But they were basically cream cheese in a pasta pocket, no crab. Next time, put more crab! They're called crab wontons for a reason. Singapore noodles Good but too spicy. It was okay. I got beef with mine. You can get chicken, tofu, or shrimp too. The beef was well done and so were the noodles and the sauce and the veggies. If you want more food, get pad Thai. Tom Yum Soup (Thai Gumbo) Okay, but really spicy. The noodles never end. Neither do the veggies or the meat. A bit more like Tom Yuck soup! Don't do that much spice anymore. Yellow Curry Didn't try it, but Dad got it. Hot and Spicy Soup Bit spicy, but okay. This Asian Eatery (otherwise known as Tao 2 Asian Eatery) is basically the sweeter version of Tycoon. The Tum Yum is too sweet, the Devil's Nest is too sweet, and the Mala Noodles is still sweet despite its spicy and numbing characteristic. Despite their sweetness, I still find myself gravitated toward these spicy noodle soups. Hey at least they are WAY better than Noodles Bistro Germantown! (This is an understatement!) The lunch combo includes a very small cup of soup. It's kind of ridiculous. It's like two shot glasses amount of soup. They might as well go get the double shot glasses if they're going to do it this way. To start with, the Fried Tofu is excellent. The Orange Peel Shrimp is good. The double pan fried noodles is alright. Thai Basil Fried Rice is good. Sauteed String Beans with Black Bean Sauce is great. It's been a while since I had the General Tso's Chicken here, so I must come back again. Adam H is accusing them of using factory breaded chicken. So let me get on it to fill my best General Tso's Chicken list. Update: I gotten to tried their General Tso's for lunch. And honestly, the sauce itself was alright, but the chicken isn't what I had expected to find. First, it is chicken breast meat, so the flavors aren't there. The pieces were cut rather small. It is a little bit crispy, so that's a plus, but it's lightly breaded with hardly any seasoning. It's very bland. I suppose they thought the sauce will cover all that up, but it doesn't. While I'm not confident enough to suggest that this is factory-breaded frozen chicken, but I can tell you that due to using breast meat, the little chicken pieces aren't very flavorful. I don't think I'll be added this place to my best GTC list. The service is good, so I will likely come back to this place once in a while. read more

Let me start by saying that I know my fried tofu as a southern gal knows her fried chicken. When I first moved to Memphis, I came across Blake P's review and was somewhat skeptical about his high opinion of the fried tofu. But he was right. So I was busy exploring the city and did not make it back here for months. It would not surprise me if the fried tofu was removed from the menu due to low popularity (come on, how many of you would think about ordering tofu if you are not a vegetarian). But I was wrong. Panko (Japanese-style breadcrumb) gives these deep fried tofu cubes a thin, light and crunchy crust, a great contrast in texture to the soft creaminess on the inside. In addition to the ginger soy dipping sauce, we also got some house chili paste to give it a kick. A great way to start your meal. To put it this way, if you must have fried food, how about something containing zero cholesterol, few carbs and minimal saturated fat? Armed with two heat-resistant friends, I felt confident enough to tackle the Devil's Nest Soup. It was a sweet spicy bowl of goodness with dumplings and noodles. Though not the fieriest soup I've ever had, I would suggest that you proceed with caution, and share with someone to avoid regret and carb overload. We also tried the (not-so) Spicy Garlic Shrimp and Pannang Beef. I would not classify either one as authentic anything, as I consider this establishment a true Asian fusion restaurant (simply lumping together exotic items on the menu with no sign of real understanding doesn't count). They were still a bit on the sweet side for me, but not as cloyingly so as many Americanized Asian fares have become. What's important to me is that the clean-tasting food here is prepared with care. It's also worth noting that restraint was exercised against liberal use of cooking oil, which is not always easy when cooking in a wok. When I start raving about edamame and tofu, chances are roughly 100 percent that the chef in charge has done something extraordinary. Sure, I'll eat either, but I've raved exactly once, and that was last week at Tao Too Asian Eatery in Germantown. Lime juice, in addition to the standard sprinkling of salt, is all it takes to elevate edamame to heights previously unknown to the addictive green soybean (frequently eaten as a snack with beer in Japan). Tofu is given special treatment by lightly breading cubes of it, frying it until the center is warm and creamy, scattering slivers of crisp jalapeno peppers on top and serving a ginger-soy sauce for dipping. No MSG is used at Tao Too, so the kitchen makes good use of peppers, herbs and spices to enhance the flavor of the Chinese, Taiwanese and Thai dishes. The Devil's Nest noodle bowl is possibly the fieriest soup I've ever eaten. As high as my tolerance is, I don't believe I could eat anything hotter; I know I couldn't do so pleasurably. "Too hot to have names," is what our efficient and friendly server told me when I asked her which three chilies give the soup its heat. Attack this monster in stages: First sample the noodles and the dumplings. Move on to the mushrooms or pieces of chicken, taking in just a little liquid. If you start with the broth -- red with chilies and glistening with chili oil -- you risk defeat. And if you are too timid with the soup, taking tiny sips, you will choke. Those tentative slurps are how you end up coughing, throat burning, tears streaming, looking like a little baby. This is a gutsy soup; be worthy. Tackle with purpose, and add a squeeze of lime. For all its might, it needs a little lift. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Tao Too is that each dish I tasted was truly distinctive from the others. While not at all meager, the menu is on the smallish side for an Asian restaurant -- seven specialties, seven traditional dishes, four selections of fried rice and so on. It's carefully considered, though. The Thai Basil with Shrimp tastes nothing like the Spicy Garlic Shrimp. The Singapore Fried Rice, with just a touch of heat from the curry and full of crunchy sprouts and onions, is quite different from the Coconut Curry Chicken. So even when the base ingredients or the predominant spice are the same, creative use of flavors makes for variety. Lunch specials, served daily, are reasonably portioned. A soup and your choice of fried rice or steamed rice come with the entree, along with a small serving of pickled vegetable relish. My favorite selection was the Coconut Curry Chicken, slightly spicy sliced chicken breast served with potatoes and onion in a curry sauce lightly sweetened with brown sugar and coconut. The General Tsao's Chicken is just barely breaded and sauteed, nothing like the typical version that's deep fried and drowned in a sticky sauce.
