We were turned away because they were at seating capacity. Are you telling me no tables would open in two hours. Awesome dinner. Who'd guess this little place in Mattawan would be so awesome? Got spring rolls for an appetizer, and even my boyfriend who isn't big on cabbage liked them. The Kung pao shrimp was really great. Good spice and nice flavor profile. Service was great, especially that they were willing to accommodate subbing rice for veggies as I don't eat rice. This pains me to write... as this place has been recommended to my by everyone since moving here. But some of the things I got were very underwhelming. My favorite things were by far the cold sesame noodles and the Pupu appetizer. I could eat those cold noodles all day everyday, I would recommend going there for these alone! Maybe I didn't order the right things or something but the three entrees weren't the greatest. Lemongrass steak- this was the best. Though slightly overdone, the flavor was good. Pad Thai- I am so confused why there was basil in there. That's all I could taste! It ruined the whole dish for me. No lime or sour taste. Noodles were mushy. Lemon chicken- the glaze was good but there was not nearly enough of it. It mostly just tasted like fried chicken. Overall, I want to go back and try different things as the dumplings in the pupu appetizer were so delicious and I feel like maybe I just didn't order the best things. Good asian restaurant- definitely better then the usual chinese restaurants that are not the best in the Portage/Kzoo area. On the expensive side but portions are huge!! 2 dishes and an appetizer will be enough for 4 people. I recommend the Pou Pou and Chicken Lollipop as appetizer. One thing they should fix is the location pr orientation of the mens room. From the dining room one can see the mens urinals every time someone goes in. read more

Amazing staff, first of all. Now for the food. This is my favorite asian restaurant period, and definitely in my top three restaurants I've ever been to in my life. I love love love the crispy tofu. I add veggies to it, but even if you don't it's still sooooo good. Their tempura and rangoons are also incredible. They have something for everyone. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I love that they can add more spice if you want it. They flavors in all the dishes I've had are just there. My all time favorite is the pad Thai. It comes with enough to split for two, but I rather take home the leftovers for myself. Peking is also at the top of my list. They always start you with crunches which comes with a sauce that is out of this world. Rangoons are always a must. We love a fusion restaurant as we could get variety of styles and dishes. It is hit and miss with this place. We have not been back in a long while, and we tried their food about a month ago, and it was delicious. We came back the 2nd time this weekend and everything was very salty! Very disappointing. Chicken Lollipops were slightly burned and oversalted, Beef Marsala was also very salty, we could not taste anything else. The Ben Pao Shrimp, however, was really good and on point. This person was not sure if we could be served. She went to ask a coworker (which took time) for advice. The coworker came over and said it was too late. She stated we needed to be here by 6:50 pm. The down side to traveling for business is most times you are eating alone. This place was jammed busy on a Tuesday night. I initially put my name on the wait list but realized that would be very awkward taking up an entire table for 1 with people waiting in line. I ordered the Mongolian beef to go. The waiting area has a wide open view to the kitchen. It was impressive to see 6 cooks working the woks and assembling the food with precision and speed. The cashier was very pleasant and even managed small talk in spite of how busy they were. My food was excellent. The beef was tangy and moist. Right down the road from our house is this little place that somehow is known by people as far away as Chicago. Located in the little tiny town of Mattawan is a place that is sure to blow your mind with the Asian fusion flavor they offer. The place is pretty cramped, with only 15 or so tables, but if you can manage to get a table, you can literally order anything off of the menu and be more than satisfied. Lunch is also a special treat because it's mostly locals and the prices are awesome too. BTW, don't miss their offshoot in Portage called Ziingo...it's just as good but only in takeout only. read more

Quirky American-Fusion restaurant with a unique twist and an unfortunate name. It was an interesting experience dining at Chin-chins. I wouldn't really call it Asian, just as much as throwing liquid cheese on tortillas and calling that "mexican food". However, the food wasn't bad, a few things actually looked relatively authentic, but regardless, it was tasty. They give mass quantities, but my preference is quality over quantity personally. It's incredibly expensive for what you get, but you can tell they actually put some effort in making their dishes unique. I'd recommend it if you want to try something new, just disregard the name if you're actually Japanese ( because it literally means the "Wee-Wee". ) read more

We ate here on a Friday night. There was a pretty long waiting list and the host could not give us an estimate on how long the wait would be. We were asked if we wanted to place a drink order. The wait went quickly, probably 30 minutes or so. They had menu's and magazines on the table to pass the time. Our server was Hannah and she was very friendly and took very good care of us. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any questions we had. She brought us crunchies and this amazing dipping sauce. I think we would have been happy to just eat this for dinner. Our meals came quickly and everything was amazing. The spring rolls were perfect and not greasy at all. The hot and sour soup had the right amount of heat. The Kung pao was amazing. We will definitely return. read more

Chin Chin should not have tables setup outside, they are really only doing take out, which is ok. But putting tables out as if you can eat there, says you will have what you need to eat a meal. You get your food in a bag with no plates or plastic cutlery (and no I can't eat rice with chop sticks). We had to use the lid of the container as plates, and ripped pieces of the rice container to scope up the food. Yuck! Food was also, way below their standards. Staff seems worn and frazzled. I don't have high standards for service unless it's the sort of place where that service is expected. And by the look of it, Chinn Chinn is a casual restaurant, so I went in just looking for good food. The hostess that night probably needs a bit of training in being a bit more polite. It made me think that as customers, we were not appreciated. That's just bad practice, but I excused it. My server was quite negligent, and I know we were just a 2-top, but my minimum requirement for service is having something to drink. My glass remained empty for the majority of my meal, and I was really *really* thirsty. The server didn't come around our table for us to ask her for water, but we did get one refill... when we were about to ask for the check. I could point out a bunch of other unpleasant things about the experience, but I'll hold off. Bottom line was the food was very unimpressive. It wasn't inedible by any means, but it definitely wasn't as delicious as I was hoping it'd be. A solid 5 out of 10 for me. So, reading these favorable reviews, I'm honestly somewhat dumbfounded. It's led me to decide to give Chinn Chinn a couple more chances until I write it off. Maybe it was an off-night for the kitchen or I didn't order their best dish? Well I couldn't have been more impressed with this gem on exit 66 in Mattawan. I grew up in Kalamazoo and now live in Chicago. I come back to my hometown maybe twice a year and we always hit Food Dance for good food, but then are left a little lacking with other restaurants. That was until now. I've had good asian food in Chicago, but nothing, and I repeat, nothing, like the experience and quality of cuisine like here. Both my wife and I agreed that this is by far the best restaurant in the Kalamazoo area, and is simply stunning. We started with hot & sour soup that was out of this world good. Super fresh, great taste, and good spice. I was told to order the specials so I got the "Loco Moco" which was a braised pork shoulder cooked over 18hrs. in a sous vide machine. Served over brown rice, and with a fried egg, it was stunning. My wife had the lemongrass prawns and it was equally amazing. Perfect balance of spice and flavor, and the prawns were cooked to perfection. Even the deserts were incredible! The waitress we had was fun and enjoyable. Very enthusiastic. She made the experience fun. We even said hi to John (the owner). He is a very nice and humble person. We wanted to let him know how incredible his food was! This is a must go.... even if you are not staying in Kalamazoo and passing through to somewhere else. Get off on exit 66 and eat at Chinn Chinn's. We are looking forward to going back again knowing that we can dine here again and again. Thanks for the exceptional experience. Have you ever had Asian fusion like this, especially in mattawan michigan...nope! When they opened several years ago it seemed that the fad might wear out but it simply hang so far. For lunch you can typically get right in and maybe you will wait for just a few minutes. The seating area is a little small but seemingly adequate for this little town; but don't let that fool you... The place is jamming all day in the kitchen! Every morsel on the menu is fantastic and you're sure to walk out saying that you will be back! For dinner; plan to wait awhile while smelling all the tasty aromas. Beer by the bottle is a bit over the top as far as price goes at $8 or so...and nothing special...but this is not their claim to fame. Don't get me started on why it takes literally houuuuuurrrrs to get a to-go order but it's always been this way and although itnis worth the wait, don't plan on ordering at 1130 and picking it up within the hour... It's more like a 2 hour wait. At 2pm, the wait for pick up might easily be 6 or 7pm. Plan ahead and you won't be disappointed but if you don't; you may likely be out of luck. read more

This has to be one of the most unlikely places to uncover a brilliant Asian fusion experience...a small strip mall storefront in a small town in western Michigan! My first time in the door at Chinn Chinn was memorable...very memorable! We spent the obligatory 35 minutes waiting for a table at 6:00 pm on a Thursday night in early August. While waiting in line, we enjoyed chatting with a few gregarious foodies about the offerings at the house of Chinn. Their enthusiasm for this place was downright contagious! Once seated, we were courteously greeted by an attentive waitress who recounted the specials. We opened with the multi-tiered pu-pu appetizer containing a delectable selection of no less than 6 or 7 different type of bite size goodies and several tasty sauces. Our group sampled three different entrees including going "off menu" for one of the daily "specials" called Ja Ja Mein. The Kung Pao came through big time on the recommendation of our waitress with flavorful goodness, plenty of wok-flashed veggies and nuts and just the right touch of inviting Asian spices. This is the best, freshest tasting Chinese food I've ever had. No question. The positives about this restaurant far outweigh the negatives. If you want food here, you need to plan ahead! Order your carryout hours before you want to pick it up. When you call, they will give you a pickup time that is often several hours later in the day. The restaurant is small and has had a wait every time I have tried to eat there. With those negatives out of the way, let's get to the food! Everything I've tried here is delicious, but I most often order Kung Pao Chicken or Pad Thai. I've experimented with some of the tofu dishes and the the tofu is prepared very well. The spice level of most dishes can be adjusted to your taste on a scale of 1-10. I love that you can see right into the kitchen here. My go to place when we go out for dinner. Love the specials, and Orange Beef is my fav. A must try is the fresh Cucumber & Chicken salad. We always get at least one to go and snack on it later. And for dessert the best is Lemon Berry Cake w/ fresh berry sauce & Chantilly whip cream. Perfect! Everyone is friendly, & knowledgeable.
