    Takoyaki

Crunch Toba Roll (5/5): I REALLY liked this roll. The shrimp was fantastic and the sauces added just the right amount of sweetness. The crunchy tempura flakes also added some great texture. One of the best tasting rolls I've had. Takoyaki (5/5): I haven't had a lot of takoyaki, but this was by far my favorite. The outside was nicely fried and the inside was gooey. I liked how many little chunks of octopus there were inside too. The sauce was also very good. Spicy Salmon Roll (4/5): Very fresh, but not at all spicy which was a little disappointing. Crunch Bomb Roll (4/5): Pretty standard for a deep fried roll. Fun presentation on the plate though! Gyoza (4/5): Pretty standard gyoza. Edamame (4/5): Pretty standard edamame. Bang Oh Roll (2/5): Might've been a decent roll, but it was kinda drowned in ponzu sauce (which I wasn't a big fan of). RATING SYSTEM 5 - Great (Need to get this again) 4 - Good (Would get this again) 3 - Ok (Might give this another shot) 2 - Not Good (Won't get this again) 1 - Bad (Telling people to avoid this)

After reading the reviews for this newer establishment in the Kalamazoo area, I was very excited to give this a try. Now, for part of the backstory, I used to live here about three years ago, and this is new since I've moved away. When I moved away, there weren't a lot of Japanese offerings. As a lover of Japanese food culture in the country itself I'm always on the search for good Japanese food here in the states. We walked in with my son. There was two of us dining. My son had eaten here in the past and had stated that the sushi bento was something he had tried in the past. It was quite good. After reading the menu and seeing that they offered a Katsu Bento I had now found my meal. Jack opted to get the sweet and spicy grilled pork, which is similar to a pork Bulgogi if you will. We also ordered a spider roll. Which, if you don't know is a softshell crab roll. One marker to Jorge Japanese restaurant is by the quality of their tempura. At least that's what I found in my experience. Temporary in Japan is an art and they take it very seriously. So, when the spider roll came out and I noticed how thick and Brady the batter on the softshell crab was. I knew right away that we were in trouble for tonight's meal. And, as I predicted when our Bentos came out. The shrimp and vegetable tempura in the bento followed suit. Thick ready batter that overpowered the protein and vegetables that were cooked in what looked to be over.m temperature oil were an expected disappointment at this point. The Katsu also had a thicker than expected breading. While it did have a Panko crust, it wasn't really that bad. What set it over the top of bad was the fact that they poured some type of curry that was not a traditional Japanese curry it was more like an orange Thai based curry that was thin and frankly tasted disgusting. I've never seen this type of sauce served with a pork Katsu. When I asked the server about this, she was clueless. And did not have any good answers. I asked her for some Tonkatsu sauce which should be served standard with this type of dish and once again, she had no idea what I was talking about. I asked her if any of the workers in the back cooking were Japanese and she replied no. To her credit she did find some Tom Katsu sauce and brought some to the table. Unfortunately, since the Katsu was drowning in this orange curry type of sauce/gravy, the death of the dish had already occurred. Well, I can't recommend that you visit this establishment due to the poor quality of the food offerings. I will know that the service was very friendly, the ambience of the restaurant was comfortable and did remind me of a small Japanese style diner. I will give this restaurant a full one star for that the food zero out of five stars. Very disappointing. I will not return. And I would not recommend this whatsoever.

It's a small-ish restaurant, with friendly and helpful staff. The food was good, plenty of it, too. The music is turned up, but that didn't interfere with talking at our table - it did muffle others conversations with us nice.

My fish had multiple bones like this!! Stabbed my gums and was irritating considering how good the sushi from here normally is! :(

Those sushi burrito invention is sooooooo good!!! It tastes like a Big huge sushi and fills up your belly with satisfaction! I ordered toba burrito, it contains shrimp tempura and crap salad with yum yum sauce on the side. I asked them to replace spicy stuff with non spicy. They were very cooperative, polite and attentive. I love this place! I am coming here for more!

Really my go-to for sushi in the area. I like getting simple rolls, miso soup, edamame, and egg-fried rice. Enjoyed their veggie roll quite a bit as well. The ambiance is charming in my eyes, and I have never had a complaint about their service. Food quality has sometimes varied from 3 to 5 stars in tastiness, but is generally pretty consistent. Can't say anything about the sushi burritos as they don't interest me, but certainly a unique draw to the place. Plus, a friend of mine liked their kimchi.

Food is good, got two house rolls and miso soup. Great vibe in restaurant, can see where sushi is prepared. Service is pretty good as well.

Small pieces of fish. Very tasteless. Unidentifiable pieces of something in the dish. I was not impressed

Their sushi burrito was delicious. Adding toba sauce to it made it even better. A very filling amount for a great price.

Great sushi and service. An awesome spot for a good lunch. Prices are reasonable but can add up quickly depending on what you get.

Such a cool spot!…read more We visited Toba on a recent Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by this cute little spot! The menu is lengthy with so many options to choose from! We were a little overwhelmed by the choices at first, but we quickly decided to try several different things to get a better idea of the flavors and what we might like best! We started with a house salad, which was so delicious! Fresh, yummy ingredients with a truly delightful ginger dressing! Hugh flavor! Next we ordered the Gyoza - this dish was AMAZING! The dumplings were perfectly cooked and served with a delicious traditional dipping sauce. Also included was a garnish slaw with a spicy mayo dressing - this complimented the dish SO well. This dish was honestly our favorite part of our entire visit and we highly recommend!! Of course we had to try a sushi burrito which is possibly their most unique offering! I've never heard of sushi in a burrito form before Toba, what a great idea!! It's basically a giant, handheld, wrapped up piece of sushi! We chose the Toba Burrito with steamed shrimp, shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, avocado, tempura flakes, eel sauce, and spicy mayo. This was a delicious combination! Because it's in a burrito the ingredients are thicker compared to sushi, and you can taste each addition better, but my husband and I both agreed that while this was a very fun item to try, we prefer the regular sushi rolls to the burrito. Smaller bites of each combo of flavors is our preference. :) We also got a K-zoo sushi roll which was delicious but not as chilled as I expected it to be. These pieces were large, (bigger than a one bite piece of sushi) but packed with quality, fresh ingredients with really great flavors!! My husband and I both ordered a cup of tea, both were delicious and perfect for a cloudy, rainy day!! There are several options to choose from, we asked our waiter for further explanation and recommendations. :) There are so many more options to try at Toba - we will definitely be back to try more things, the ramen for one! :) The service at Toba was excellent! Our server was very attentive and helpful! Our order arrived very quickly and in perfect stages since we tried so many different things! The atmosphere is modern and seating is consolidated to a fairly small area. We were seated in the cutest front booth, right in the window. Best seat in the house, I'd say! Kalamazoo is beaming with great foodie spots! Toba is a great addition to the downtown scene!! :)
