We went here at peak dining time a couple of days after Christmas so it was pretty busy. Our server was pleasant and got our order right however we had to wait at least 10 minutes to have her come back so we could ask for water for the table. By far the best sushi restaurant in Kalamazoo. My husband and I have tried many sushi restaurants throughout Michigan but this one definitely adds to the top of the list. To get started we ordered gyoza as an appetizer My husband asked asked the waitress for her recommendations She recommended the tornado in the firecracker along with the 911 for spice. I got the special California roll along with the Michigan roll and I loved every single bite! The gyoza was also phenomenal. Our waitress was super friendly and on point at all times we spent 67$ for 4 rolls of sushi. The owner (Tony) is usually also working there and being hands on with his staff which is fantastic to see such a supportive boss. It was a busy night for them and they were always on point we waited about 20-25 minutes which isn't bad considering the amount of people there. We will being going back. read more

Sometimes good and sometimes great... but tried out the katsu bento Togo and they now just shove everything on top of one another in a styrofoam box. There was no mention of sauce being served on the katsu but it was, so now the entire box is soggy-- dumplings, tempura, and all. Disappointing bc there's so much food and it's not able to be saved. Crunch Toba Roll (5/5): I REALLY liked this roll. The shrimp was fantastic and the sauces added just the right amount of sweetness. The crunchy tempura flakes also added some great texture. One of the best tasting rolls I've had. Takoyaki (5/5): I haven't had a lot of takoyaki, but this was by far my favorite. The outside was nicely fried and the inside was gooey. I liked how many little chunks of octopus there were inside too. The sauce was also very good. Spicy Salmon Roll (4/5): Very fresh, but not at all spicy which was a little disappointing. Crunch Bomb Roll (4/5): Pretty standard for a deep fried roll. Fun presentation on the plate though! Gyoza (4/5): Pretty standard gyoza. Edamame (4/5): Pretty standard edamame. After reading the reviews for this newer establishment in the Kalamazoo area, I was very excited to give this a try. Now, for part of the backstory, I used to live here about three years ago, and this is new since I've moved away. When I moved away, there weren't a lot of Japanese offerings. As a lover of Japanese food culture in the country itself I'm always on the search for good Japanese food here in the states. We walked in with my son. There was two of us dining. My son had eaten here in the past and had stated that the sushi bento was something he had tried in the past. It was quite good. After reading the menu and seeing that they offered a Katsu Bento I had now found my meal. Jack opted to get the sweet and spicy grilled pork, which is similar to a pork Bulgogi if you will. We also ordered a spider roll. Which, if you don't know is a softshell crab roll. One marker to Jorge Japanese restaurant is by the quality of their tempura. At least that's what I found in my experience. Temporary in Japan is an art and they take it very seriously. So, when the spider roll came out and I noticed how thick and Brady the batter on the softshell crab was. I knew right away that we were in trouble for tonight's meal. And, as I predicted when our Bentos came out. The shrimp and vegetable tempura in the bento followed suit. Thick ready batter that overpowered the protein and vegetables that were cooked in what looked to be over.m temperature oil were an expected disappointment at this point. The Katsu also had a thicker than expected breading. While it did have a Panko crust, it wasn't really that bad. What set it over the top of bad was the fact that they poured some type of curry that was not a traditional Japanese curry it was more like an orange Thai based curry that was thin and frankly tasted disgusting. I've never seen this type of sauce served with a pork Katsu. When I asked the server about this, she was clueless. And did not have any good answers. I asked her for some Tonkatsu sauce which should be served standard with this type of dish and once again, she had no idea what I was talking about. I asked her if any of the workers in the back cooking were Japanese and she replied no. To her credit she did find some Tom Katsu sauce and brought some to the table. Unfortunately, since the Katsu was drowning in this orange curry type of sauce/gravy, the death of the dish had already occurred. Well, I can't recommend that you visit this establishment due to the poor quality of the food offerings. I will know that the service was very friendly, the ambience of the restaurant was comfortable and did remind me of a small Japanese style diner. I will give this restaurant a full one star for that the food zero out of five stars. Very disappointing. I will not return. And I would not recommend this whatsoever. read more

Really my go-to for sushi in the area. I like getting simple rolls, miso soup, edamame, and egg-fried rice. Enjoyed their veggie roll quite a bit as well. The ambiance is charming in my eyes, and I have never had a complaint about their service. Food quality has sometimes varied from 3 to 5 stars in tastiness, but is generally pretty consistent. Can't say anything about the sushi burritos as they don't interest me, but certainly a unique draw to the place. Plus, a friend of mine liked their kimchi. read more

For dinner, we selected the Philadelphia Burrito, spicy combination rice, deep fried crab & mushroom ball, wontons and shrimp fried rice. The combo rice was my favorite. It was the right amount of heat and not too fried. The well chopped veges and egg were an added bonus! I hate it when a restaurant puts hunks of veges in my food. A good place to go in SW Michigan for nearly authentic Japanese food. My wife and I have visited Toba four times now. In the beginning I was impressed by the service and close to authentic preparation of the menu items. Especially the bento boxes, which provide a variety of items that you might also be served in a restaurant in Japan. That said, the restaurant is becoming somewhat run down in appearance and some of the food quality is starting to drift off of what I used to consider "just like home" in Japan. Service has for the most part been good, except when the servers become distracted when they gather around the sushi bar and talk loudly for 5 or 10 minutes at a time without checking on the customers. I like traditional miso soup with wakame (a kind of seaweed) and cubes of tofu. In the early days, I could expect a tasty bowl with a moderate portion of both. Recently what I've received has become more watery, and very little, if any, wakame or tofu. I pointed this out to my server last time, saying that I hoped for tofu and wakame, but I don't think she understood. Kind of a strange request, possibly, but again it was weak with nearly none of my favorite traditional ingredients. Much of the appeal of a restaurant is in the appearance and atmosphere. Once things start to look run down, my experience has been that everyone including the customers start to lose enthusiasm. Over the short time that Toba has been open it's seen a lot of traffic and now the interior is starting to look tired. I would suggest to the owner(s) that it's time to refresh the appearance, upgrade the interior, and retrain the staff to bring back some enthusiasm and authenticity. I'll still go to Toba just because it's about the closest I've found to authentic in Kalamazoo. I just hope that next time there'll be a little more seaweed in my miso. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with Toba Sushi & Grill! I ordered the Toba Katsu Bento, which had a great variety with thoughtful portions and high quality food. The katsu chicken was perfectly tender with a great crunch and I was amazed by the katsu sauce, which had an excellent mix of sweet tomato/spicy flavor. The tempura was cooked very well with a fantastic crisp. I'll admit I was disappointed that there was no tempura sauce in the to-go order, which surprised me. But you get it if you dine in. I also enjoyed the gyoza which was generously filled with moist pork. The rice was cooked perfectly, especially in the inari, which had a pleasantly sweet skin. The edamame and octopus sides provided a nice aside. I also enjoyed the salad's variety of greens and thought the dressing had a good balance of sweet/sour. Besides the lack of tempura sauce, I will say that I'm not sure the higher prices match the casual/takeout vibe. But besides this, it was a very enjoyable meal, and I hope to return soon. read more

Went here for my boyfriends birthday tonight and wow did it not disappoint! We both got the sushi bento boxes, and it had so much in it for only $15! Fresh tempura and gyoza and delicious sushi and sashimi! Also the miso soup was out of this world delicious! For dessert we got the red bean mochi ice cream ($6) And it was amazing! I was a bit skeptical of this place just because of the fact that I don't like fish, any type actually. My husband and I visited Toba because of a Yelp event, we walked in and we were instantly greeted. Everyone is SO incredibly nice and welcoming! Makes you feel right at home. We ordered the sweet and spicy pork bento box. When it came to our table I was SO happy to see so many little choices! I instantly dug into the pork, it was spicy but just right. Not to spicy, it came with deep fried veggies which were delicious the rice was cooked perfectly and a side of edamame that was perfectly salty!! It also came with a tiny squid salad lol which I photographed but didn't try because I don't eat anything under the sea. The owner also came over and talked with us and was the nicest ! Told us that if we needed ANYTHING, to let him know. I would definitely recommend coming and giving the place a try! The sushi LOOKED good and everyone was raving about it! I wish I liked fish!!! Now on to my best friend, this was her very first Yelp event to throw and I can't believe how incredibly proud I am of her, the place looked amazing, everyone was having so much fun, I had a blast, the little bento boxes and goodies were the best! Haven't tried the new Japan-Korea restaurant in town yet? Shame on you! The food is superb and the service friendly. Tonight we had takeout: 2 appetizers, some nigiri, and sushi rolls. The appetizers were familiar gyoza (good) and one new to us, galbi gui--we are definitely ordering that again! The traditional nigirii, ebi and sake, very generously sized and perfect. So I had plans to try this place for the first time with a friend this coming weekend but I couldn't wait that long after seeing post after post about this place on the Kalamazoo Menu Facebook Page. My co-workers and I ordered takeout for lunch today and I went to pick it up. Like others have said, I LOVE the aesthetic of the space. It's a minimalist/modern design. Has a very causal yet refined vibe to it. I will be going back this weekend to try more things because I'm hooked. I ordered The Kimchi Bulgogi Burrito + green onion. I actually think I got the Bulgogi Burrito + Kimchi which is even better! Haha It had Bulgogi beef (theirs was fantastic), kimchi (not as spicy as I usually like but I think it will appeal to more ppl that way), bean sprouts, cucumber, green onion, Bulgogi sauce and what I think was spinach. Phenomenal. I also got the Unagi Nigiri (eel) which is a favorite of mine. My co-worker ordered the Kino-Dama appetizer (starter) which is deep fried mushrooms with crab salad and cream cheese (11/10 would recommend and I'm not even a crab salad person). She also got the TOBA Burrito and really liked it! My other co-worker tried the Volcano 2 roll and said it was wonderful. It is extremely dangerous that this place is like 5 minutes from my house and directly between work and home You reeeeally need to check this place out if you haven't already, I need it to stick around! Update: I added more pictures from my 2nd trip to TOBA today! Everything was amazing and I would definitely recommend the Bento Box. Decided to try this place after hearing great reviews about it. It was worth it. We went on a Friday evening pretty early as they usually have long waits once it's peak hour. We got our table instantly (yay!). It's a small and cozy place. We got the miso soup (it's served in really cute wooden bowls) and it was delicious! They have limited vegeterian options so we didn't have much choice with food. Post soup we ordered kimchi - it had some really good marination on it. For main course we got fried rice, veggie burrito and veggie tempura burrito. The sauce that came with the burrito was YUM! Both the burritos were super delicious with fried zucchini, asparagus and, arugula. The burritos were really filling and we didn't have any room for dessert. Overall it's a great place. Wish they had more vegeterian options. Next time we'll make room to try the desserts too! read more

I dined here last night and wanted to leave a review because I was concerned for a server there. I love Toba and my experiences with the restaurant are very positive. However yesterday evening 9/15/2025 a man came into the restaurant at first I thought he might be homeless but he walked straight up to one of the men making the sushi in the back. They talked for a bit and he got a drink from a waitress. He ended up leaving but then he returned to talk to the guy making sushi again. The waitress walked up to the man (I think he didn't pay for the drink? I'm not sure) but this big man got super aggressive and stepped into the waitresses face. She looked like a young girl and he seemed really angry. He did end up leaving and I saw the girl visibly shaking after. I was in a table by the door and am kicking myself for not saying anything in the moment. But I am extremely disappointed in the men at the establishment at the time for not doing anything for that poor girl. I am not sure if this should be mentioned but when the man was leaving he threw something in a basket and pointed at the guy he had been talking to. I love Toba and their food is awesome I just wanted to make sure this situation was brought to the managements attention. read more
