This place was definitely worth the drive from the Battle Creek area. A friend and I stopped in and had a few appetizers and got so full we could barely get to our entrees. I tried the special that day, which was crab salad on watermelon. An interesting combo! All of our food was great, service was good, although it is a small place and was pretty busy. This place is the real deal. I have dined inside before, and it was mind-bogglingly delicious. Best Asian food anywhere around. But this review is specifically for their takeout service. Chinn Chinn is hands down the best Asian food in the area, even though it is about 10+ miles from Kalamazoo. Coconut Red Curry and the Kung Pao are my two favorites on their regular menu. They also have a board on the wall and all the tables, which lists the daily specials. Last night I stopped in late to meet D. I ordered their Lettuce Wraps and Wontons, which were amazing as always. D loves their Hot & Sour soup, so you can image his disappointment when he was told they were out. However, a few minutes later our server reappeared with a piping hot bowl of Hot & Sour soup and said she found out they prepared a new batch. He was a happy camper. The service is super friendly and young. All the waitstaff appear to be under 25, which gives them lots of energy. read more

We got our food for takeout & it was right on time. Three minutes early actually. We definitely appreciated their happy attitudes & easy to work with customer service. Hibachi chicken comes with onion rings on top & obviously they were soggy by the time i got home so i recommend getting this meal when you are eating in. Cold noodles are always my favorite so delicious. They were also very compliant with our order being plant based. Lettuce wraps also were not soggy in anyyyy way. They had a nice crunch. What a pleasure. Chinn Chinn catered a friend's birthday bash this past weekend, providing a wide selection of fabulous and familiar foods in abundance. Chinn Chinn's Hot and Sour Soup is the example by which we measure all other Chinese and Asian Fusion restaurants. We've enjoyed it since 1980 (in the earlier Peking Palace incarnation as well). Every other item we've ever had there has been wonderful as well. I'm salivating now just thinking of the Shredded Pork Szechuan. It's great to see the Tsui family's successes over generations. Drove all the way out from Kalamazoo for a Father's Day dinner and was told we could "come back tomorrow". I don't feel like waiting until tomorrow to eat dinner. Next, we were told take-out is unavailable. Inconvenient, and a lack of empathy on their part. Looks like I'll settle for the same old Chinese Cuisine in Kalamazoo next time. Excellence, thy name is Chinn Chinn. Today we tried a new (to us) appetizer: Ben Pao Shrimp. As the menu says, DYNAMITE. The burn is mostly in your mouth, but the flavor of batter-fried shrimp covered in chili oil and a concoction of peppers and seasoning turned out to be perfection...beautifully balanced heat and flavor. We continued to enjoy stalwarts like hot and sour soup, Mongolian beef, and ginger brocolli chicken for the rest of our meal. Disappointing! We wanted to love Chinn Chinns...Especially because of glowing reviews from other reviewers and because Asian Fusion is a favorite! If this is the best the Kalamazoo area has to offer, this is very sad! Our visit was certainly less than lovely... And this was not a first visit. We planned out visit ahead of time, knowing that the restaurant fills fast... So we came for dinner at 4:45pm and even though the restaurant had many open tables, we were plagued to wait for several minutes before being seated. There was definitely a lack of impetus in getting our party of six seated in a timely fashion. After what seemed to be a good ten minutes of waiting---again with many open tables available, we were seated. Timeliness did not improve as our visit at Chinn Chinns progressed. The table already featured water and some deep fried wanton "chips" with sweet Thai Chili sauce for dipping. Our waitress made her way over and took our order of appetizers... During the ordering process a drink fell off the table and we asked for a replacement. Again, several minutes later and still no beverage at our table. In fact, it wasn't until our appetizer order was delivered to the table that a replacement beverage was provided. It was as if the waitress felt she couldn't come back to the table until the appetizers were ready to be delivered. Mmmmmm.... When appetizers did finally arrive, we asked to put in our order right away, which we were able to after waiting once again... During our period of being delayed again, a bug (some type of beetle) flew into one individual in our party which caused a bit of a stir at the table momentarily. Has the health department been here recently? Finally---our waitress made her way back and we placed our order. There wasn't really anything special about our order... No extras, substitutions, replacements... Nothing out of the ordinary. It was all on the menu as printed... But another period of lengthy waiting began and did not commence for what seemed to be decades of time later. In fact I watched all of the individuals in our party age substantially before our entrees were delivered to the table. Now I might be able to make somewhat of an exception for some of this lack of "effort" or "timeliness" or "driving force" in service with outstanding food... But I unfortunately cannot say that the food was outstanding. A couple of dishes in our party were completely cold (supposed to be hot). Flavors were okay, but nothing to be overtly happy about. All in our party had something different. But none were extremely pleased with that which was presented in front of them. Either the food was cold, flavor was lacking, or we were thinking of a much better version of the same dish at a different location. During our time of eating entrees, a large party entered the restaurant and their period of waiting began. Of course when staff eventually got around to setting up the now filled establishment, the staff blocked a potential exit door with tables (fire code issue?). For dessert we decided to do ourselves a favor and get out before having to wait for the rest of eternity before being served. In other words...we declined. If you are planning a visit to this location, be sure to do yourself a favor and plan at least 3-4 hours of time for your visit. Don't expect too much from your server, there is definitely a lack of drive and importance in focusing on the customer. Again, if this is best the Kalamazoo has to offer in the Asian Fusion category, I feel very sad for this vicinity! For something to be the best, there needs to be elements of being the best. My wife and I lived near Chinn Chinn from the time it opened until the time we moved to Indianapolis a few years later, and ordered take-out in a bi-weekly basis. We returned to the area 13 years later with just a few reminiscent places to visit on our list, including Chinn Chinn, but it wasn't nearly the same, it was bigger and better. This made us feel good because of the local support we gave this business when we were there, and imagine we were a small part of the growth. However, when greeted by our waiter, he was a jerk and was rude because we brought in a plastic cup, and was chippy to let us know we couldn't have food or drink from the outside in the restaurant. He was obviously annoyed and went to the server station complaining to his female colleague about us bringing in an outside cup, along with 'an f'ing peanut butter and jelly'. The female was clearly engaged in stirring the pot and taking part of the drama, so we immediately realized that we had spent enough time in the restaurant and decided to leave. Yes, we understand the principal, but the waiter could have chosen a much better way to approach us other than his clear annoyance with rolling eyes. To the female who tried to save face upon our exit, your fake empathy after the fact was spoiled by the fact that you were initially part of the problem and not the solution. Finally, I'm sorry to the owner, who greeted us with nothing other than happiness in the early years, and who has worked so hard to have his legacy tarnished over a few bad apples. By the way, the plastic cup had a special powder in it for our Autistic son to help with his anxiety while on a long trip, which we premixed in the car to avoid to avoid an issue. Chinn Chinn offers good food. They also charged an undisclosed fee to cater to my seven-year-old's peanut allergy. The charge appeared on my bill with no warning and was not referenced in the menu. When I confronted the owner, he cited extra labor costs to clean a wok and refused to reimburse me for this undisclosed fee. The ADA considers dangerous allergies to be a disability, and my son was charged extra for the privilege of a safe dining experience. This "allergy fee" is a discriminatory practice. That aside, what lack of compassion leads to such a policy? Chinn Chinn may offer good food, but this is a deal breaker for me. read more

Given a choice of the three, until recently I would've said that finding the first two would be more likely than finding the third. After all, I can probably count the number of Asian people I've seen in Van Buren county on one hand (0.3% of the population). Yet there I was face to face with Chinn Chinn. Standing outside, you can see right into their immaculately clean open kitchen which has actual Asian people cooking. 'Could it be?', I pondered, rubbing my eyes. Shifting my attention to the dining area, I saw stylish decor and a large crowds of patrons enjoying their meals. I went in and tried the Szechuan eggplant which was spicy, delicious, and surprisingly free of grease like you find at many other places. Cooking eggplant well is such a rare feat I swear I got a little misty (or maybe it was the chilies). Despite a expansive list of authentic dishes and specials, my friend went with the kung pao chicken (hey, I tried), and it was terrific. Perhaps the best I've ever had. To top it all off, they have a large wait staff and the service was top notch. Friendly, polite, and attentive. So if you're ever in Mattawan or driving by on I-94, do yourself a favor and stop in for a great meal. You'll see that some legends are true after all. read more

My husband and I stopped here for a late lunch on a Saturday just after they'd opened for the day. At 3pm, we couldn't believe there was a line, but we took it as a good sign. Lines usually mean we can expect good food. It was not to be. We ordered the Blazing Jam Boong and Pad Thai with Shrimp. Shrimp Pad Thai: The noodles, vegetables, and shrimp were perfectly cooked, but there was an odd flavor evident right away. It wasn't a bad flavor, but it simply was not right. Eventually, we realized that there were was a copious amount of holy basil in the dish. Basil does not belong in pad thai. The dish, while tasty, was not pad thai. Blazing Jam Boong: This was extremely disappointing before we even tasted it. My husband is a Korean, and when he looked at it, he knew something was wrong. The color of the sauce/broth was a strange brownish red, when it should've been blazing red. One taste told us the broth was soy sauce-based, and the taste was completely off. If they had called this something else, we might've liked it, but it certainly was not what we thought we had ordered. read more

Horrible experience- Unprofessional manager and severely lacking in communication across the restaurant. We tried calling multiple times earlier, finally getting ahold of someone to ask about making a reservation. We were told we could not make a reservation, and it's first come first serve. So we decided to make the trip out to Mattawan and take a chance at getting a table without too long of a wait. When we arrived, we were asked if we had a reservation (which ironically we were told we could not do earlier) the hostess asked the bartender for guidance on which table to seat us at (their were plenty open) and I saw the bartender say yeah we can probably put them right over there, then a manager pops out of nowhere just looking like she is just looking for a fight. She was very rude, negative, and unaccommodating not wanting to listen or understand what we were telling her. It seemed as though she is very miserable with her life she just was waiting for an opportunity to try to ruin someone else's night too. Clearly this restaurant does not care about business or customer service. I used to recommend this place but I just can't anymore after this experience. read more

Yes, it is hard to believe that this restaurant exists in southwest Michigan. Their food is good. I had the lettuce wraps for an appetizer and the Chili Prawns. The lettuce wraps were fantastic and the Prawns were good. The chili sauce was a Korean gochu jang sauce that only had the flavor of the gochu jang. My sister had My Little Hibachi which was not as good as the lettuce wraps either. The wait for a table here is legendary. We arrived at 8 pm on a Wednesday night and had to wait 20 minutes for a table. Which isn't too bad, but it was 8 pm mid-week. If the wait here is so long, why can't Southwestern Michigan support more good quality ethnic restaurants? read more

So after almost two years since my Halloween '16 review, and twenty more meals under my belt (so to speak), both take out and in the restaurant, I am as convinced as ever that Chinn Chinn is one of the two best Asian restaurants in SW Michigan. (Nonla is the other, also in Mattawan.) Most recently my girl and I met two colleagues for dinner. We had two orders of rangoons as an appetizer, my girl ordered crabcakes (a special that evening) which came with a spicy corn relish and a spicy mayonnaise, colleague A had Chicken Fried Rice, colleague B had the Mushroom Medley (domestic white, portabella, shiitake mushrooms in a brown sauce consisting of soy, garlic, scallion, and marsala wine), and I had something that I hadn't seen on the menu before: Bibimbap, a Korean dish. We finished off the dinner by all sharing the "Great Wall," a huge slice of a rich, dense multilayered chocolate cake (what several other restaurants in the area call "Death by Chocolate"). At the meal's conclusion, we were all happy and satiated. The food was delicious. Megan, our server, was attentive and professional. And that's generally the case at Chinn Chinn, meal after meal, without exception. Whether it's just me and my girl, or the two of us with friends, the food served is interesting and thoughtful and delightfully yummy and the service is impeccable. When we get take out, we know the order will be filled correctly every time. Living in the Midwest, I don't worry about the authenticity of Asian cuisine (or Mexican, or Italian, or Greek) that is served locally. Criticism about authenticity falls on deaf ears. My girl and I want food that is well seasoned and delicious. She hates spicy hot, I bathe in heat, and Chinn Chinn always makes us happy with our decision to eat there. read more

This place was fantastic! Had a girls weekend and the 7 of us stopped here before heading home. We were a mess of "mmmmm" and food shares. We even had crispy little won tons in a cute metal(?) take out container with sauce. I had bulgogi and was in love. Our waiter was very kind and we had perfect service. The community knows this as they are always busy and it can be difficult to get in or order pick up unless you call very early in the day.
