Food was kinda OK, but just not what we were used to. Ordered the black bean chicken and it seemed to be 50% onions and was far too spicy to eat. Wife and son wouldn't touch it, so it was left for me alone to finish as I was the only one who uncomfortably could finish it. Never had this dish so dang spicy anywhere before. Ordered sweet and sour chicken for my youngest son as you can't go wrong with breaded, fried chicken, right? Wrong. It came swimming in sauce. Again, this was a new one for me. Dozens of places I've ordered this before, never saw that before. And... then the kid refused to eat it. Overall the food was OK, but things being quite different than I've experienced at many many other Chinese Takeouts made this a disappointment because my kids then weren't able to enjoy dinner and we all had to split dishes quite a bit differently than expected. Also, really weird how all the tables and chairs were stacked up in the corner and they refuse to let anyone eat there. I mean, why have them at all if you're just going to do takeout. We were up in Kalamazoo for a quick trip. We stayed at a local hotel, and ordered China hut. It is just a little hole in the wall take out joint, but the food was very good. Not your typical Chinese. Ride past this place all the time and I thought ehh why not try it out. So I placed a to go order of the vegetable lo mein. It looked amazing and smelled amazing. It's just something about the taste that got me. Almost like I can taste the grill in a bad way. When I went to add some soy sauce on top it literally sunk to the bottom of the bowl due to their excessive use of oil. I will give them the benefit of a the doubt and try this place again just not too soon. For now it's a two star for me. read more

Love the chef specials and Indonesian dishes. It's great to get away from always eating Chinese dishes. One of my favorites is the Potato lovers and the Crazy Fried Rice is a good, different flavor change. Indonesian dishes are in some cases, similar to Malasian food. read more

Absolutely fantastic Chinese restaurant!!! The food is so good. I came here when I was in Kalamazoo for a two night trip I got the sesame chicken and dumplings and crab Rangoons and it was all fantastic!!!!! Everything was homemade even the spicy mustard, this was all surprising I had to come back the second night and eat here again!! Even better the second time. I've tried a couple of the Indonesian dishes and my favorite thus far is definitely ayam goreng kacap- it's so good! A tiny, hole in the wall, kind of place. Obviously family run as the "dad" was sitting behind the counter feeding a not-too-happy baby. He looked sort of frustrated himself LOL Service was prompt and friendly, if a little abrupt. The prices didnt seem out of sync with similar places id been too. The dining room was clean, small, but pleasant. They specialize in Chinese-Indonesian food. The food was...ok. I order sweet & sour chicken, egg drop soup, and egg roll. The chicken was over done. Tasted like the oil it was fried in was old. Not gross just odd. It was also drowned in a very sweet sauce. Not much sour. The egg drop soup was basically just watered down chicken broth with spatterings of the ghosts of egg whites. Speaking of the soup, when taking my order, she neglected to tell me that the soup CAME with my order, so I ended up with 2 bowls of that watery concoction. Feh... The only decent part was the eggroll and it was average. So, if you want some relatively cheap Asian food... and you dont feel like driving anywhere else... and theres a convenient parking space.. and you notice a hot chick going in there... it MIGHT be worth the visit... maybe. Recommended this place to many of my friends and coworkers. They all loved it! My faves are Potato Lover, Singapore Rice Noodles and Ayam Kecap. Good place for a take out dinner. It is a small and quiet place to have a private sit down dinner or a qiuck lunch. Friendly owners/staffs and fast service. I tried this place based on a review here claiming that they had the best General Tso's Chicken in town. I disagree. I found it basic and overpriced. The place is small, but seemed clean. Seating for, I'm guessing 20 or so. Granted I came in at about 2pm on a Wednesday, and I was the only customer. I didn't wait long for my food, it felt like less than the 10 minutes they quoted me but I didn't time it either. I realize there are at least 100 different ways to make this dish, but this style is not my favorite. Again, I found it basic and overpriced. $14.xx for my dish and a single spring roll. This is the first time I have pleased enough with a restaurant to go through the effort of downloading an app, signing up, and writing a review. First, I am not a Chinese food expert, and have to eat gluten free. The last few times eating Chinese (other places) I got glutened. I was skeptical to try chinese again and asked lots of questions. I was relieved that lady taking my order (who I believe to be the owner) was knowledgeable about what gluten is and what sauces and ingredients have it. I chose moo goo gai pan and have eaten and emerged unscathed in the gluten department. The place is clean, the lady was nice and the food came quickly. The first thing I noticed was the bag was heavy, REAL heavy for just two meals. The portions are HUGE. I have quite an appetite and I couldn't eat it all. The wife and I could have shared it and both had enough. I ordered my moo goo Mai pan extra spicy and holy smokes was it spicy. I was able to taste the food as well and it had a good taste to it and good texture, not rubbery or squishy. For the wife I ordered empress chicken, hold the hot spice. My wife loves Chinese food, has been to china even and she was also impressed. She shared some of hers with the neighbor and she said it was very good. All this for less than $20. This place is an awesome value! We'll be ordering again soon! They do have a few tables to eat there too. read more

We have ordered take-out from China Hut perhaps three dozen times. The food is always freshly cooked, prepared as requested, ready for pick-up, and quite reasonably priced. The owner is a wonderful friendly person. Highly recommended. And if you are getting on in years, a hint is that one dinner serves my wife and me. Twice. I recently stumbled upon China Hut on my way home from a function and with the task of bringing home dinner. Since I've tried a few places in the Portage area with little to no success, my search for a go-to Chinese take out continued. Next in line is CH. So, here goes. I walked in about 6 or so and was greeted immediately by a lady (and baby in a pack n' play) where she promptly took my order. Let me stop here by explaining that I do order the same thing for the first time to grade each and every Chinese place equally. This would be an order of egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, crab rangoons, and pork lo mein. With this order I added sweet and sour chicken for the wife. I only live 10 minutes or so away, so the food was still warm when I got home. The last thing I wanted to do is microwave these dishes and ruin any chance of authenticity. Egg Drop - Just ok. Little runny, wasn't the thick, savory stock with chunks of egg that I like. Didn't seem homemade. H & S Soup - Another miss. The soup was overly filled with strips of crunchy veg (bamboo) which made it a little difficult to eat. I really could have used more mushrooms, egg, and a little more bite or savory-ness. Crab Rangoons - These were not formed in the typical shape that you would expect, more of an envelope filled with usual cream cheese filling. I could have used a little more crab taste but they did the trick. Lo Mein - Nice rich, smokey flavor with strips of pork. This was good. I ate some during dinner and finished the rest later that night. My preference is the larger flat noodles that absorb more of the sauce where here they use a skinny noodle, just my preference. S & S Chicken - The breading to chicken ration was WAY off. When I tried cutting the chicken piece in half, all the breading came off only to reveal a little nugget of chicken underneath. A little disappointing. The sauce was good and rice was acceptable. Not sure I would be running back to China Hut anytime soon. If I was in the neighborhood and was craving some Chinese, I'd have to stop since the competition in Portage is slim. We really need a stand out joint for quick take out. Recommendations? read more

I live close and have eaten here several times. The dining room is clean. The staff are friendly. The food is a good value with decent flavor. I recommend them if a budget friendly menu is what you are looking for. Dining room is not large group friendly, for a small family or take out it is perfect. read more

Although the service was friendly and fast the food was not so great. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, which was burnt and smothered in a thick, too sweet sauce. My friend ordered chicken and broccoli and had a difficult time choking down the poorly flavored meal. The fried rice was obviously cooked in oil that was used for something else, and the crab rangoon was just wrong on all fronts. Even the fortunes in the fortune cookies sucked.
