It's OK. Ordered a spring roll and hot & sour soup. I did not expect the spring roll to be deep fried and so small -- about 3" long. To me a spring roll is a cold piece of white rice dough wrapped around fresh uncooked vegetables seasoned with vineager and other spices -- sort of like a rolled up salad. My hot and sour soup was hot in terms of temperature but not at all hot in terms of spiciness. Service and cleanliness were fine. read more

i placed a order for crab Rangoon during my lunch break. Tracey the woman who took my order and lady who also rushes you over the phone told me that my food would be ready in 10 min. I get there and Tracey decides that she does not want to give me my food. All bc I asked for a refund 1 year ago bc my crab Ragoons were not fresh they were hard as a brick. This woman was so rude and nasty to me it called me every bad name you could imagine while she's yelling at me she's spitting as she's talking to me. The outrage she had was so bad I almost called the police on her. Mind you I live way on the other side of town and would drive here for good food. It's crazy bc I have ordered a few times after my return but i sent my daughter in to get the food And never had a problem. I wasted my whole lunch break going back and forth with this crazy lady. Tracey kicked me out of the store in front of customers and told me to never come back. I can't believe how horrible I was treated. Tracey had the absolute worst customer service ever. I am a fan of small independently owned food spots, especially the Asian variety. Somehow this spot escaped my radar for quite a long time. I finally became aware of it when my co-worker brought in some take out from there and was bragging how good it was. SO of course I HAD to check it out! Fast forward a couple months later. South China has become my default go to for Chinese take out. I haven't dined in yet so this review is strictly about the take out. First of all the staff is super friendly. All smiles. And they remember you, and conversations you've had with them. That shows they pay attention to their customers. The interior is pleasant but nothing fancy. Simple booths and tables. Clean but simple. Some vague Asian inspired decor on the walls. Take out is pretty straight forward. Call ahead or order at the counter. I never call ahead and still have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my order. And they tend to do a pretty steady take out business, volume-wise. And for what you came to hear.... the food is EXCELLENT! I wont say it's the best I've ever had, but it is delicious. And even more important, it's CONSISTENT! I have been eating there at least once a week for the last 2 months or so and have YET to be disappointed. Did I mention the egg rolls? The egg rolls, these are the BEST IN THE KALAMAZOO/PORTAGE area. I know that's a huge claim to make but I stand by it. I've gone and just grabbed 3 egg rolls with a side of sweet & sour sauce. No cars in the parking lot, we were the only ones in the restaurant. Lots of people came in for takeout. My wife got the peppered steak plate and I got the orange chicken which there wasn't a single piece of orange skin or flavor in my plate. Had to ask for real Chinese mustard instead of the stuff that were in the packets on the table. South China is a local place on Riverview. I had never been there and didn't know what to expect. It was packed when we got there and a line for take out was out the door, which is a good sign. The line moved quickly and the staff is very friendly. The food was absolutely excellent. My wife and I love some good Chinese takeout. It was authentic and it's local and family owned. What more could you ask for? Did I mention the very reasonable prices? The inside could use a coat of paint but honestly it was a great place to eat or get takeout from. Went on a sunday afternoon for chinese dinner. The waitress was a bit helpful with recommendations. We ordered the shrimp fried rice which was recommended by previous members; I personally did not like it much and it was a hygiene issue (found a small hair in the plate). We have been visiting South China about three or four times a month for about two years now and really enjoy the quality and value of the meals. We always get the steamed dumplings and egg rolls which are some of the best I've ever had. The quantities are generous and we always walk out with enough for lunch the next day. Most meals are in the $8-$10 range which is a great value considering the quality and portion size. While their version of spicy isn't as hot as what we are used to, everything has always been consistently flavorful and well prepared. Definitely a step-up from the typical buffet style Chinese and on par or better than just about every other Chinese restaurant in southwest Michigan that I've visited. Service is quick and to the point. Takeout is a major part of their business so there is a lot of foot traffic coming in at the counter. Don't expect a serene lounge type experience. Quiet moments are interspersed with occasional noisy conversations from across the room. This place has been here for as far as I can remember. My cousin really likes the place so I wanted to try. Now the food did come and I ate itt before I even took a picture. The reason for that is when the food came out...An upset customer walked up to the checkout demanding a refund. No vulgar language or anything threatening, but the expected elevated voice off a person in destress. The young woman taking at the register was very polite and took the bag. Only to check it and tell him no refund. After fifteen minutes of arguing the guy finally gave up and left. I felt bad because she was very frustrated and I know how customer service is. So I went to check on her. Found out the guy tried to get a refund for a half eaten box of shrimp fried rice. Claiming there was no shrimp inside. Clearly there was shrimp inside of it, but it was no longer a quart. Another woman who had saw the part of the exchange, asked for the meal if it was gonna get tossed. Great food! We ordered a pint of beef with broccoli and a quart of steamed mixed vegetables. Compared to other types of restaurants, this is a lot of food for the money! For example, a pint of beef with broccoli is only $5.75 (+tax) and it comes with a half pint of white rice. That's enough food for two people (or one really hungry person). The family who owns this place are wonderful people. They rarely take a day off. Even better the food is really good. Most dishes can be cooked fresh in less than 20 minutes. I had been here once previously, and the food was mediocre at best, but it was close so I thought I would try it again. I ordered food for pickup and on my way there I got into a car accident and my car's front end got completely smashed in. While still on the scene, I got a call from the South China asking me where I was- I nicely explained to them that I had gotten into an accident and that it might be a long time, and that I wasn't sure. They said ok, and called back around an hour later. However, when I explained to them this time that my car was smashed in and that I wouldn't be able to make it, I was told "fuck you" by the owner and hung up on. It didn't help that I was already having a terrible night and wasn't even able to eat, but that the whole reason I got into an accident was to get food from this place in the first place!!
