I won't say who our server was because he's the reason why I deducted a star. He didn't really say much, which is fine with me... but he also wasn't very attentive. I don't need or want a server who hovers, but when 3 out of 4 people have empty drinks and your server has passed your table several times without acknowledging you, it becomes a problem. Also, when I needed a box and my check, he was halfway across the restaurant standing around and not bothering to look at his tables. Other than that, it was a pleasant time. I went to lunch with three ladies after a conference we attended and we had a wonderful time. The food was good and we got just what we expected. The restaurant was clean and well lit. There was a manager going around visiting with people and checking on things. She didn't come to us, but we had just been sat so we hadn't even ordered yet. I like Johnny Tamales and I will go back. But there are too many restaurants vying for that title. So, if I call it the 2nd greatest combo plate in Texas, I'm probably safe. But seriously, (on the day that I went, that is), it was vintage, it was classic, it was perfect. Big scoop of delicious guacamole. Perfectly realized Mexican rice (with just the right hint of cumin). Excellent frijoles refritos (made with manteca). A mild and perfectly seasoned chili gravy covering cheesy enchiladas.And, as you'll see from the photos, they make their own leche quemada, and it is chock full of pecans. Highly recommended. It's worth the road trip. You can have fun visiting all of the antique shops on Main Street and then having your terrific Tex Mex lunch.

The bean and cheese tostada is exactly as it should be -- warm crispy shell and beans topped with cool lettuce and cold cheese (I asked them to omit the tomatoes). The crispy taco is fine in a Tex-Mex sort of way without the pool of grease that is so common with this dish. The rice is way too fluffy for my taste, and the charro beans basically looked like refried beans with some liquid added. Not impressed. I judge Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurants on their salsa, first and foremost. This place serves it warmed, which I despise, but they brought me a cold cup of the red stuff upon my request. It was delicious. Tomatoey. Oniony. A little bite. And I'm pretty sure I tasted some cilantro. The price point here is fabulous, and they seem to have some outstanding lunch specials.
