We got a rounds a margaritas...I got a Cadillac marg and it was really good. One we got the bill, we saw the margaritas were $3 each in wich we found out it was a happy hour special. Service was terrible. The sever was rude and gave me an attitude when I asked her kindly if I could order off of the kids menu. She told me she was going to charge me the regular adult price of chicken tenders with fries but give me a kids size like what? That makes zero sense. They took forever to come back with the check too. Horrible Mexican food. It tasted like a prefabricated poor quality food that was not worth eating. We had to send the chips back because they were so stale! The enchiladas, taco and rice were the worst. The beans were somewhat eatable. I asked for pico de gallo to see if it could enhance the flavor. Customer service was terrible. Took forever to get our drinks. We ordered queso and ran out of chips. It was about 5-10 minutes before the waitress noticed we needed something when she walked by. They were not busy at all to justify this either. In the main dining room there was one other table than ours seated. There looked to be one person in the side dining room eating and one playing slots when we left. It took forever to get a check. I got up to walk to the front where I saw a man who looked dressed like a manager. I asked if we pay up front. He said pay at the table. When I said well we haven't gotten our check yet, he just ignored me and walked on by. I've worked in the food industry. This place was so dead and did not justify service like this at all. Further, the food was not great. Most notably the queso tasted artificial and fake. I could eat a little bit with the chips but I could not stomach it on the Texas fajita beef burrito I got. It completely ruined it for me. The one thing that would make me go back was the avocado margarita. It's the only reason I am giving it a 2 star. I've never had or heard of an avocado margarita before and it was delicious. If you enjoy unique flavored margaritas, they do have a good selection. I couldn't leave Texas without having some good ole Tex-Mex. Well, I guess that this qualifies anyways. I went on a Saturday night and, much to my surprise, it was nearly empty. There's food places on every block in Texas so I figured this wasn't too much of an anomaly. Naturally, I got nachos. If you know me, you know i'm a sucker for a good nacho. My favorite kinds of nachos are the ones that are covered in cheese like the ones pictured on this review. I was pretty satisfied overall with the nachos. I also had Chicken fajitas but I forgot to get a picture, bummer. The fajitas were alright but I would probably just stick to the nachos next time. I don't know if I should laugh or be mad here. This was an utter disappointment. We came here to visit great friends visiting from Colorado but we should of went somewhere else. The food was just horrible as well as the service. I had to try the enchiladas with a fried egg on it which they pass off as "Southwest Enchiladas". There is nothing Southwest about it at all. More like breakfast enchiladas that should be a no-go! There was cheese everywhere, I mean I wouldn't be surprised if the tea had cheese in it. I know I'm bantering but I can't help it. Came in for lunch. Ordered a Caldo de Res which comes with tortillas of choice and a side of rice. Rice was slightly sour and soup vegetables were extremely smooshie. Needless to say the beef was tough. I don't usually make this dish but I can estimate it to be reheated a couple times too many. The food was delicious!!! I ordered Chile rellenos with beef, Beef enchilada, charro beans and rice. I was only able to finish the Chile Relleno and charro beans. I saved the beef enchilada and rice to eat at home. I loved my food!!!! Especially the charro beans, they are the BEST I've ever had! My daughter got a kids plate and it was so much food, she will also have it for leftovers later at home. The staff and owner were awesome. We definitely got our money's worth with the food portion. The lights were a bit dim for my taste, the overall atmosphere was pleasant. Definitely going back soon! I also ordered a lemonade and it was AMAZING!!!! The fajitas are amazing. They have the best chile con queso. I've been to plenty of Mexican restaurants in Houston but their cheese is top notch. I got tortilla soup and my hubby got fish tacos. The kids split fajitas. There was enough food to take home. We will be back. read more

This place, either needs to be condemned or serious help from Gordon Ramsay! You can smell the mildew when you walk in. The walls are dingy. The dinning room is gloomy and dark. I don't think this restaurant has had a thorough cleaning or a paint touch up since it opened January 18, 1986. The food is mediocre, typical Tex-Mex, nothing special. This was an institution of Tex-Mex 10-20 years ago. Unfortunately the restaurant is not what it used to be. The menu hasn't really changed but the prices for basic Tex-Mex have doubled. My last visit, there was only one thing I wanted. They make a great appetizer plate of Queso Asado(grilled) which is served with roasted whole jalapenos, sliced avocado and corn tortillas. It decent. However the service was terrible and the margarita was abysmal. I mean seriously, a margarita has 3 ingredients....Tequila, Cointreau & Lime. It tasted like freaking lemonade. I think our iced tea was refilled once. My associate ordered the same drink that I had and told them it was terrible. They refunded it. I'm not sure what she actually had for dinner(quesadillas??), but we asked for extra pickled jalapenos for the chips and queso. Welp....that's gonna cost you extra, which we didn't know till the check came. For two people, 3 ordered items, crappy drinks that was 70 bucks and the service sucked. Terrible customer service. waitress did not speak English and put in the incorrect order. I ordered steak ribeye fajitas and then she ordered baby back ribs which was almost $20 more. when I mentioned it she didn't acknowledge it except had a manager come over who I shared the same with. They still charged me for the full meal which was their mistake. They didn't even acknowledge the mistake. After i got my check back a second then with no change I brought it up again and the waitress told me in Spanish she understand but no apology or anything. as I walked out I said something to the manager asking if they even understood what happened and she said yes. the food is mediocre, the beer is served warm and when you ask for a cold one we are told that that's the way they serve their beer ! absolutely ridiculous we spent tons of money and felt that they wanted us to leave. the cold drinks were hot, the shrimp was tasteless no seasoning , the staff was in not attending our table well at all and the manager says if you have happy hour drinks you MUST order two , who makes rules like this ? or if you order a happy our entre, you can't order anything else ???? too expensive and overrated. We meet some friends here for lunch that were flying out of Hobby airport and thought it would be a good spot as the outside of the building looked pretty schnazzy. Okurrrt. Lol. Well, we were terribly wrong. The service was awful. After finding our own friends with no help, we seated ourselves and waited several minutes before we were even asked for a drink order. Then we were rushed to order like they were busy. You can see in the pic that it was a ghost town in there. When the food finally arrived, I was blown away at the tragedy that was my plate. I had to search for tiny enchiladas like a needle in a haystack. My tea remained empty during the majority of my meal. That's a huge no no for a country boy like me. Hims needs his tea please. It was my boyfriend's idea to check this place out. Neither of us had ever been. We went around 4:30 or so. It wasn't crowded at all. I noticed they had a plaque on the wall stating they had won "Best Fajitas in Houston" in 2004. And my boyfriend was in the mood for fajitas anyway. So we shared mixed fajitas for one. The fajitas were pretty good. The meat was tender and juicy but I don't think anything really set them apart from other fajitas we've tried. The rice and beans were bland so that was a bummer. Also I think there prices were a little high for the quality. I wanted to order queso but the medium was $10. I think the large was between $13-$15. For our meal of mixed fajitas for ONE and two drinks, it was $23. I don't mind paying that much at Pappasito's because their quality is A+ in my opinion. But Don Carlos was very mediocre to me. Our server was friendly and polite. And service was quick but I doubt we'll be back. There are so many other great Mexican restaurants around. Sorry! read more

Six of us went in on a Saturday night at 7:00. The first thing I noticed was how empty the place was. We were greeted warmly and quickly seated. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. Chips and salsa were very good and they gave us all we wanted. The menu has a lot of choices. Our food was served in about he time you would have expected. I asked everyone how their food tasted and there were no negative comments, most felt that it was just good Mexican food. Nothing really stood out as good or bad. Everyone left with plenty to eat. Here are a few observations: - If you are trying to be WFPB or vegetarian, there are no really good choices on the menu. If you are vegan, then you are definitely out of luck, unless you want to have a long awkward exchange with the wait staff. Most Mexican places have at least a few good options, this one didn't. - the price was slightly higher than I expected. Not excessive, just a bit more than I would have thought. - the automatically added 15% gratuity to our bill. I know many places do that for a large group, but 6 isn't really a big group. We arrived in Houston from Hobby Airport. We're Texans recently transplanted north. We were ravenous so our first order of business was Mexican food! Google gave us Don Carlos as a suggestion and with 4 stars we thought we'd give it a try. Our daughter wanted breakfast and they serve it all day on the weekends. She had the chilequiles with queso. It came with 2 eggs, cooked your way, papas y chorizo and refried beans. Everything was delicious! My husband had the Mexican omelet and on the servers recommendation, had both the beef and chicken fajita meat. He loved it! It also came with papas y chorizo. I went for the fish tacos. The tilapia was well seasoned and grilled and came with slaw and a yummy cilantro sauce. It came with refried beans and rice. The 3 fish tacos filled me up. very disappointed how veterans spouses are not recognized, even if they have a DOD ID card, the food was great, the service was horrible. Not the waiters fault, he was slow because he was the only person working, it seemed. The general manager says they don't extend discounts to retired service members. I should have learned my lesson the first time I went there and the server took 20 min just to bring back a margarita. Her excuse was "she was waiting in line for other peoples margaritas to be made first" there were 3 tables seated in the whole restaurant .
