It's so nice when the casino gives you a food comp. I would come to Chips 'N Ales even if I had to spend my own money. The people are very friendly and helpful. They keep the place clean and they make sure you have everything you need. We each ordered the #5 Fish 'N Shrimp Platter at the counter and were given an order number with a shiny holder to place on our table so they could find us when our food was ready. By the way, shouldn't there be a limit to the number of times "'N" can be used instead of the word "and" on a menu? Just asking. Anyway, our lunch was ready and delivered rather quickly. We had tarter sauce and malt vinegar for the 2 fish filets, which were tender, flaky and delicious. We had cocktail sauce for the 3 beer battered shrimp. I think they would have been better with a panko type of coating but maybe the beer batter makes it more authentic for an English pub. Was at the casino and got hungry so decided I'd get fish for lunch. Ordered the 2 pieces of fish with 3 shrimp and fries and Cole slaw. The staff was very friendly and helpful answering all my questions. They looked like they all enjoyed working there which you don't always see. I wasn't to thirsty so asked if I could have a cup of water while I waited said no water was available which surprised me. Food came out pretty quickly. Everything was good and not too oily(which I've found with fried fish at other places) The fish was tender and the shrimp were also & were pretty good sized and very tasty. Coleslaw was a little runnier than I'm use to but did taste good. I know I'll stop here again next time I'm at the casino. read more

So I didn't know the tenders would be super breaded like the fish and they also overdid it with the spring mix. So it was decent at best. Went for lunch today. We weren't that hungry after a big breakfast so this was our choice in the WinStar. We have been here before and it seemed better last time. The food is definitely hot and cooked to order. My issue was the combo plate all the proteins tasted the same especially the chicken and Cod. I could not tell the difference. They were good just not great. The fries were also a little disappointing because they were very limp and not hot. We came right at open (11am) and there was a line already. Everything is made to order so it's fresh. They have delicious fries in both the plain form and Irish nachos. The Irish nachos had cheese, bacon, jalapeños, and dipping sauce. I'd get it again. On the double bacon cheese burger, the meat patties could have more flavor but regardless I'd say it's a great place for some fries. The portions are huge so you could share the nachos. After playing in the casino for a few hours, we decided to stop in here for a late night snack around 11:00pm. There were only a few people eating when we walked in the door, I ordered the Irish Nachos (fries w/toppings), and my spouse ordered the Chips (fries). While we stood there to pay, I looked behind us and noticed a swarm of people in line. Like this place really fills up fast. The restaurant closes at midnight, so maybe everyone decided to come before closing. The staff wasn't overly friendly, and almost all of them looked tired. Maybe because it was 11pm? We paid for our food and sat down. Our food was on our table within 7 minutes or less. My Irish nachos came with jalapeños, sour cream, and cheese. I had them remove the bacon, as I don't eat meat. The fries were pretty good, not too greasy, however, the fries at the bottom of the basket were just a little over cooked. So I didn't eat those. They don't have options here for Veg Heads, other than fries. Unless you order the chicken tender salad and have them remove the chicken. The fresh cod & hand cut fries are great here. There is a line at times, but it moves pretty fast. You can get fresh cod or shrimp or a combination with chicken tenders. They also have hamburgers, which look good. They sell beer and soft drinks. You can order a chocolate chip cookie, chocolate lava cake, or what looks like a lemon or vanilla cake. I have never tried the desserts. A few years ago, they did offer a bread pudding that was crazy good. I have no idea why they stopped offering it. They really should bring it back. I go to Winstar just for the #2 Chicken Tender combo. These are by far the best chicken tenders I ever had. I sometimes dream about them at night. The batter on the tender is so exquisite. Every single bite is savory. Each visit is better than the last. It is impossible for these tenders to get any better but they still do every time. This is one of my favorite spots at Winstar casino. Both times I've visited, I've stopped into this pub and was able to order quickly and the food came out hot. This last time I ordered the 2 piece cod, 2 piece chicken, 3 shrimp combo and it was just as good as the first time. I really enjoy it because the breading is quite light. They have cheaper drinks than the casino floor too. If you walk up and the line is long, give it 15 minutes and it should go down. I stayed at the hotel and got a coupon for the crab cake sandwich, for $2.99. I ordered it without the slaw and the sauce on the side. I have a unreasonably averse reaction to mayo. The sauce was quite vinegary and had mustard seed in it, which I enjoyed and did end up putting it on my sandwich. The bun was good. The sandwich came with red onion and tomato, which I enjoyed. As for the crab cake, it was alright. It was probably imitation crabmeat that is breaded and fried, but it tasted alright and had a nice crunch. The French fries were really good, but definitely not English style chips. If you have a coupon, it is totally worth the $2.99. The atmosphere was very pub style, lots of wood. Honestly, whenever you come to Winstar, it's not for the food, it's to win some big money! So Chips 'N Ales is a decent restaurant inside the casino that has some freshly fried fish and chips. The wait is significantly shorter than if you wanted to eat at the Winstar buffet, and the menu is simple. The cashier and staff are extremely friendly, and the food comes out in a timely manner. When I came here with my parents, I ordered combo #5, which was the chicken and cod. In my opinion, the fried chicken strips, and fried fish are some of the best fried items on the menu. The chicken strips were very tender and crispy. They were also not too oily, and paired well with the ranch. In regards to the fried cod, it was slightly greasy, so be sure to use extra napkins to soak up the excess grease. However, the fish was fried very well, and they were decently sized portions. If you like your fish and chips with a crispy and not too dense batter, then Chips 'N Ales will nail your preference. Also, the fries were nothing too special, but it was a nice addition to the meal. We decided to eat here since we didn't really feel hungry enough to indulge in their buffet and we were under a time restraint. The menu is very straight forward and the service is friendly. I was relieved to see that they cook everything to order since the restaurant seemed more fast food oriented vs an actual sit down. We decided on a bowl of clam chowder to start. The clam chowder was filled with clams and the usual suspects, but it was absolutely ruined by the amount of salad. I would say borderline inedible. I ordered the Fish Sandwich Combo (grilled or breaded Alaskan cod on a Kaiser bun topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles,tartar sauce). The sandwich itself was actually pretty good. More greasy than I would have liked and could have used a bit more fish. My husband ordered the Cod Combo (Alaskan cod fillets coated in our distinctive beer batter, then golden fried). Once again, the fish itself was tasty but it was just way too greasy! We went through so many napkins just trying to get some of the oil off. The fries that came with both our meals were really good though. I'm not sure if we would ever come back just because the food here wasn't all that great. It wasn't exactly cheap neither. Being at Winstar it is inconvenient to go to your car and head to Gainsville to eat so we decided to try out several of their restaurants. We both ordered the Cod and Shrimp basket. We received 2 small fried filets of fish and 3 shrimp. It was as we expected, more like fast food fish and chips vs a seafood restaurant version. Hard to beat a great day at the casino and with Windstar the number of restaurants available you can truly find anything you could feel like consuming. I always enjoy good fish and chips! To me, it's the perfect comfort food, when done well. The location in comparison to the poker room for Chips and Ales is a bit of a hike, which is not bad after spending hours on your hind quarters. The price point is about 25% more than it should be, at $10, but that's expected, captive audience and destination style resort. The fish was beer battered beautifully, creating a nice crispy flavorful coating over delicious succulent cod, which was fresh as could be! The tartar sauce was a reasonable facsimile due to the mass production. Pass on the beers, as they are ridiculously priced!! The "chips" (fries) were the weakness of the dish! I returned the first batch thinking they were not cooked fully or had sat around too long. The young server quickly replaced them without anything more than a smile and "I will be right back." The second batch came out, clearly piping hot, and just out of the oil..... They were limper than Bob Dole prior to Viagra (based on the volume of his commercials in the past)! I could wring out the grease, and there was nothing crispy about them!!! The last space on the plate was filled by coleslaw which had a nice taste, was crunchy, and not overly sauced. This is one of our favorite restaurants to eat at every time we visit Winstar World Casino. The fish is always prepared fresh and comes out really hot and delicious. Their batter is awesome.
