I had chip off the old block trim my 75 ft Aleppo Pine tree and the crew did a wonderful job. They arrived early and started on the tree and then the crane arrived . They were very careful with my property and my neighbor's property because the tree limbs were hanging over both our roofs. The two tree climbers were awesome! The crew cleaned up our yards, roofs, and the street. Jacob came to my house twice and explained everything that needed to be done to keep my tree alive because I did not want to have it removed due to we love our tree. All in all the crew was at my house for two and a half hours and the tree looks fantastic. I recommend them to anyone who needs tree service. read more

Chips Tree Service/Chip off the Block provides incredibly poor service and does not follow through on their commitments for the service requested. They make appointments and then repeatedly cancel them at the last minute. The timeline they give for the completion of a project was completely inaccurate. They charge for a particular service, but do not fully complete that service. After delaying my project for over seven weeks, they promised a refund for services not rendered, and I have waited over two weeks for that refund. Chips tree service gave me 3 bids. The first was to skin my palms, Did a great job with that. The second was to remove 3 large pine trees, Did a great job with that. The third was to remove an Olive tree, ( that was done at the same time the pine trees were removed ) and remove the root ball. This is where my issue came. They charged $250 to remove the Olive tree. That was OK. They charge $1000 to remove the root ball. I was told by their office when I asked if they could plant my palm at the same time that there would not be enough time in the day because the root ball removal would take too long. 2 men arrived at 7:30, dug and used a chain saw to cut it out about 2 feet deep and were packed up and left by 8:30. The photos show the job they left. I find it hard to believe that they could charge $500 per hour for each man to do that job. When asked about it Mitchel said they underbid the job it and charge $100 an inch for root removal. When he later spoke to my husband he acted like he had never had a conversation with me. He said you signed a contract, it is $1000. I did sign the contract. Second issue. I did not know that they kept my credit card number on file and billed the balance without sending me a final bill or letting me know that they were going to charged on it. Don't let them rip you off! I have been getting my tree in our front yard trimmed by them for 6 years. They were never great with calling you back for your estimate, but the prices were always reasonable and they did a great job. I called for an estimate this year, 4 days later and no email as promised. I called back and the poor staff has no idea how to read or review anything on file. They finally figured out how to send me the estimate and it was more than DOUBLE the cost for the same service I have received for 6 years. Nothing has changed, same tree, same trimming. I was told they are under new management and have new prices with a minimum. Ok sure, I can see a slight increase, but double!? What a joke. read more

I need to break my comments into three categories: 1. The quotation - Jack was timely, informative and developed a reasonable quote is little time. My rating would be an "A". 2. The crews - the first crew arrived on schedule to remove the tree. They were courteous and efficient. They were in and out in less than an hour. Rating is an "A". The second crew was the grinding crew. Same experience. Rating is an "A". 3. Customer Service - here my experience was completely different. While there were a few exceptions (there were several phone calls), they were generally not helpful, often the person I was trying to contact was not there, they were poor at returning phone calls, and in some cases bordered on rude. They're REALLY good at deceiving customers, pointing fingers at other employees, and ultimately pointing fingers at the customer. This is NOT a business you want to hire. Miscommunication, empty promises, and lack of follow-through: I asked them to come out and finish the job, as in staking the trees they planted two weeks ago, and putting rocks back around the trees as they had been. (By the way, some of the rocks were stacked up around the tree beds when they removed them but quite a few of them were thrown into our basil plants. Nice.) I couldn't believe one of the responses to my pleas for them to just stake our new trees as they had said they would do (I had already replaced a lot of the rocks myself) was "How about we stake your trees and instead of us charging you for that, you give us a good review?" How about you do the job as you had said you would and THEN I leave you a good review? They were supposed to: In the backyard, take the stumps from the dead trees out of the planters, replace them with new trees (that WE bought), trim the other trees in the yard, check the sprinklers, and then return the rocks to the planters. They said they would "clean up the front yard of leaves" but when asked if they could pull a couple of weeds, they said no, they're tree guys. What they did: Left little rocks and dirt clumps all through our lawn in back. Took out the stumps, leaving quite a few dead roots in the planters. Planted the two new trees and trimmed existing trees. The guy who was supposed to check the sprinklers didn't come out for a few days afterward and that arrival was a guessing game. (He did finally show up.) We were told the staking guy would come out in a day or two after that. A week later, nothing. Denied promising the install of stakes, the return of the rocks, asked for a good review in return for them doing what they should of in the first place, and said my husband should of been the one calling them to handle the situation. Also, before I called them and spoke to Mitchell, who asked for the good review, and then received a call from Mike, who started the conversation with a condescending tone, they hadn't charged us for the second half of the project. Once my call with Mike was over, they charged us immediately. By the way, Mike was willing to throw Mitchell completely under the bus by firing him. I have used Chip Off The Old Block for many years and was previously very happy with their work. I am not happy at all with the job they just did, but there is one thing in particular that really has me upset. I asked them for the estimate to include the removal of a dead tree (not very big) which it appeared on the paperwork that they did. However the day of the work the tree was just chopped down and the stump and roots left. I called them about this as the estimate had said to "pick out" which sound like stump and roots to me. They sent their stump grinders out another day to do the work. They picked out the stump leaving all the roots. When I asked them about the roots the guy said they are "just going back to mother earth". Then I began looking into getting a new tree for the area the other tree had been removed from and found out that the nursery I have used in the past will not put in a new tree for you if there are still roots from an old tree and they do not remove them. When I received the estimate from Chip Off the Old Block there was no explanation that pick out as it sounds did not include the roots. I went back and forth calling them and I spoke with them last on September 2, 2020 and they promised to get back to me about resolving the issue. I was extremely patient, but today, 12 days later I called them back. They had done nothing on my issue. They called the employee who originally gave me the estimate then and called me back saying the only way to get the roots removed is if I pay an extra charge. I paid what I think already was an over inflated price of $800 for 5 trees to be trimmed and one dead tree to be removed. I am not paying more and I will never use this company again and I think other potential customers need to be aware of their business practices. I have talked above about my main complaint, but other things they did were also not professional including being late, smoking in my yard and my presence, dumping their discarded cigarette in my yard, cutting off one of my drip lines, leaving the property in the back yard, front yard and street not properly cleaned up and on their second visit breaking one of my garden lights. So have you ever had the experience of finding a business that offers exceptional service at a good price point, only to have it all go to hell when new owners come in? Well that's exactly what happened with Chip Off the Old Block. I found COtOB years ago from Yelp, and it was so nice to have them come out and do a full trim and clean of our sizeable yard. They always sent a large crew (4-5 people) that could get all the work done in less than 3 hours, and that included pruning six of our palms as well. We were always satisfied with the condition of our property, as they were fairly thorough with cleanup too. Though they cost a bit more than your average joe landscaper, it was worth it as they do everything. One time, we did hire an average joe who did a full landscape job, but told us he wouldn't haul away the debris. We were left with a 7 foot tall, 40 foot long pile of crap in our front yard, and had no idea how to get rid of it. Thankfully, I ended up calling COtOB and they had it removed in less than an hour. In the end, we didn't really save any money going with another company, so we started using Chip Off exclusively. That is, until about 3 months ago. We had them send out an estimator to take a look at our palms again, as the seed pods were getting ready to bloom. They wanted $450 to trim six palms, and we remembered it being cheaper in the past. We contacted them to see if there was anything they could do seeing as we had been loyal customers for a few years, but I was told that under the new ownership, prices were set and non-negotiable. I informed them that we had contacted a local landscaper by our house that would do them for $50 each, to which they responded that we should go with that because they won't even take a job unless it's over $400. Really? They didn't even try to keep our business; they simply let a customer spending almost $3k annually go elsewhere. We did end up going with the other landscaper, and they did such a wonderful job for a lot less money, so we hired them on a monthly basis. Thanks Chip Off! I hate losing that one company that you can depend on to take care of a certain service. I wanted Chip Off the Old Block to always handle my landscaping but it seems the new management doesn't want my business. I wish them luck in the future but they've probably heard the last from me. read more

Anthony, the certified arborist was great and honest which I appreciated so much. He incorporated some things like removing debris which is easy for them to do but very hard for us. We agreed to tree trimming and feeding. The tree trimming group was here Friday and did a great job on trimming two large eucalyptus trees. Noe was very personable and eager to help. Fernando was amazing in how he trimmed the larger tree so quickly. Ricardo was able to get all the dead wood off the other tree. Carlos did clean up. We were very happy with the work! Our only comment is that we asked to keep all the wood chips but discovered that the chipper was not cutting up wood into small pieces as we have had before so we have to clean it up as we use it. After researching several palm tree trimming service companies I decided on Chip off the Old Block mainly from yelp and other site reviews. I called and scheduled a quote with Conrad. He showed up and we discussed what needed to be done and told me it would be $625. I asked if there were any discounts. He responded if I paid cash the price would be $425. He wrote up the agreement with the details we discussed and gave me a copy. The office called me to schedule an appointment for July 8. A couple days before my appointment I called the office to reconfirm and was told they had to reschedule due to someone in the office had coronavirus and everything had to be rescheduled. If I hadn't called would anyone have called me to reschedule or just be a no show. Set new appointment for July 17. On July 17 crew showed up looked at my palm trees and said no way they can do the job for the quoted price, one of the crew made a phone call walked around my yard and then just left without further explanation. I called the office and was told the info on the quote was wrong and they will send another person out today to give a revised quote. They would not honor the quote by Conrad. Nolan arrived to give the revised quote and told me more than just trimming had to be done. The quote he gave was a little over $1,000. I questioned this quote and Nolan said he would check with the crew supervisor and or owners to see if they can do better on the quote. He promised to call me back either the same day or the next morning. Here it is 4 days later and no call. Needless to say I have to find another service at the busiest time of year for palm tree trimming. There are several issues here. The first quote given by Conrad, made me wander if this was a normal business practice, to give low quotes for cash. What would happen if I paid cash then later I would be sent an invoice stating I had not paid for services. If the owners are not aware of this they need to be made aware that an employee is conducting business this way. The next issue is if I had not called to reconfirm the original date would anyone have contacted me to reschedule. From this experience I doubt they would have. When Nolan promised he or someone would call me the same day or next morning and 4 days later no calls, I question their standards in regards to proper customer service. In summary, I suspect deceptive business practices by the person who gave the original quote. An outrageous second quote, and poor customer service in regards to me not being called back as promised. This is the first time I have used Chip off the old Block and my entire experience was awesome. Joe came out and gave me a fair quote on removing three trees. He was knowledgeable and helpful. On the day of the work Moises and crew came out on time and removed the trees within two hours. They knew exactly what had to be done and they were all respectful to my property and cleaned up the area. They even went by my neighbor's house to clean up a little bit of debris that had gone over to their yard. After that Saul and his helper came by to remove the tree stumps. They, too, were easy to work with and did a fantastic job. They even had to be especially careful as they were working around irrigation pipes. Stay away from this company. They are not sending certified arborist to estimate or examine trees like they advertise. The person who came to look at my trees explained my citrus trees had a citrus greening disease and told me to call the state to have the trees examined and removed as this is a highly contiguous disease and the state is trying to protect the citrus industry. I called the state dept of agriculture and was told that disease does not exist in the phoenix area and i should seek a different arborist. However prior to learning that i hired them to trim my other trees, thin them out, remove dead wood and shape them. I was given time estimates for their arrival as my dog needed to be contained in the house while the work. They arrived the at completely different times than scheduled and then were upset the dog wasnt locked up and couldnt perform the work When they finally did the work, the quality of workmenship was subpar. Dead branches left, trees not shaped. This is the worst company i have ever had and the price was 4 times as much as i have paid other non certified arborist companies! read more

Mitchell came out to check out my trees and walked around my yard telling me about all the trees I have and how to best keep them healthy. Two days later there were three guys at my house to do a property line cut of my neighbors trees as well as prune 4 others. They were efficient, clean and did a beautiful job on the trees. Al's/ Chip off the old block has serviced my mesquite for 20 years, Its at huge tree and the trim price usually ranges from 700.00 - 1000.00. This year I called to have my tree serviced and an estimator Joe who was wonderful came out quoted me $950.00 and said the office would call to schedule. I scheduled for two days later, took a day off work (I work from home), moved cars, plants, yard art etc... They didnt show up. I tried to reschedule and they bumped me again. A week later I received a solicitation phone call from a nice young man named Timothy who got me scheduled for today he had no idea that I had a pending work order. At 3:00pm today knowing my tree takes a few hours I called the office and I am not scheduled I have taken multiple days off work, made all of the necessary preparations with safety in mind. It should not be this difficult to schedule work, especially if they are calling around soliciting business. 50% payment to schedule and they never show up and then calling to solicit new business sounds like they are just running a SCAM. They did a wonderful job of saving my storm damaged 25' mesquite tree. They pruned and thinned the tree and added three duck bill anchor cables to keep it from blowing over. I called them with an emergency request because were having multiple monsoon storms lined up for a week and they worked me into their schedule. While during a 10 year period of time, the previous ownership was wonderful to deal with, the current owners are not. The moment they purchased this company they increased their fees from an average of 200 for a completed job to 400 just to show up for 1 hour with fee increasing incrementally from there. While my tree is very large and has required 3 to 4 trimmings per year which is out of the ordinary, they gave me a better deal with the old ownership due to frequency. Mind you the most I ever paid For the tree trimming service each time in total was 175 to 250 depending on what I needed done. Repeated attempts to speak with the new owners about a more reasonable fee due to my loyalty for 10 years went on deaf ears. Additionally 6 other people on my block and in my neighborhood have used their services as a result of my recommendation. This company even had the audacity to send me a text message and call me directly saying that they wanted additional business And offered a coupon for a free evaluation. When I called them and discussed It (not fewer than 4 times) again this went on deaf ears with the new ownership. Repeated promises to call me back. While I had plans for my regular landscaper to trim the tree next week and had already paid them, with yesterday's storm I lost my tree completely and it fell on a car. I cannot stress strongly enough how non responsive this company is and that their failure to recognize that the average person cannot or will not pay an arborist the same amount that you would pay a physician to care for your health. It is ludicrous to think that they can double their fee completion just to show up for one hour and treat people so horribly. They have had multiple times to reach out but have not. I have stuck with this company for a while as I have 4 homes that I would like to be able to stick with one company on. This company with Conrad and Frenando giving quotes started out OK, although Frenando quoted twice the price of Conrad but after a few missed appointments and now when I call them back for tree trimming, they have raised their price by almost 25% since I am a current customer. I have told them to take a hike!!! There are so many other reputable companies out here in the valley wanting business that can do just as good or better.. Do not recommend this company at all!!!! 1st job will be decent price, after that, RIPP OFF!!.. Do not recommend. Their prices are good and they do an excellent job. Been using them for palm trees, ficus, elms, jacaronda, and mulberry for many years. They do have a $600 minimum, so if you only have a few palm trees you'll need to go somewhere else. Jack is their on-site estimator, go-to guy, and a really good guy. Very responsive to everything we need, and very available. They are punctual, and call before they come. They carry hefty insurance so you don't need to worry there. Never had any problem or damage.
