I've been going to Chiya Chai regularly since it opened. It's a cute spot in the neighborhood for delicious fresh chais and great snacks. However, on my most recent visit I was disappointed by the type of customer service I experienced. I ordered my chai on Ritual App and arrived to pick it up. I asked one of the cashier workers (who was also making the drinks) if my order was ready. She said she would check in a few minutes when she had a sec. I didn't worry since I've been ordering through ritual for a while, so I waited and then headed to the restroom. On my way to the restroom, one of the employees appearing to be on his break, got up frantically to yell across the room to tell me the back room was closed. I replied I was using the restroom. He then followed me to the back and continued yelling that the back room was closed and that the use of restrooms was for "paying customers". I mentioned I ordered through Ritual and my order wasn't ready. He then mumbled something and walked away. After I left the restroom and took the time to process what had happened, I came back to find the young man who yelled over making my drink. He appeared to have understood he made a mistake but when I asked for his name (and some napkins) he walked away and didn't acknowledge my request. I tried reaching out to a manager but there was no one present. Honestly, this type of experience makes me feel under valued and harassed. Why did he assume I wasn't a paying customer? read more

I don't normally write reviews, but my experience today absolutely compelled me to. We visited for the first time and was blown away. The restaurant was having some issues with tickets due to the internet being out in the area and they were more than accommodating - bringing us complimentary chais and fries (which they absolutely did not have to do). Aside from the service being amazing, the food was phenomenal. The Masala Chicken Savory Pie was to die for - as was the Masala Chicken Curry Bowl. And the Momo Dumplings were outstanding. So I just wanted to update this review in light of what the owner wrote to me below. While I totally understand that with covid everything is very up in the air and ingredients are harder to source I also just want to point out other things that I hadn't mentioned before. I think the most important thing to say here is that their workers are not working their masks. The employee who gave me my food didn't put his mask on until I came in. He also didn't even put his mask on correctly as his nose was completely uncovered. I also ended up eating the chicken momos since the bison ones weren't available and I wasn't even able to finish one of them. The dough was truly not edible and I felt like it wasn't even completely cooked through. Love, love, love this place! Not only can you get delicious, authentic chai in many flavors, but the food is so good! You can grab a quick bite, chai (and more importantly chai flights) and lunch in the front of the restaurant or there is a more elaborate menu that in the back room for dinner. All meals are great! For lunch I really loved the veggie momos (dumplings) and the masala chicken savory pie. The staff was really awesome and let me order my favorite samosa chaat off the dinner menu for lunch because I really wanted my parents to try it. Thank you!!! For dinner, I would recommend the chili chicken or tofu, the samosa chaat, the saag paneer, the coconut curry shrimp, the masala chicken, and the goat curry. The drinks are also tasty! I ate here twice recently and really enjoyed both the experiences. This is a great spot for a casual dinner, good environment and great staff here. The best part is they have some really tasty Vegan options. I tried the tofu appetizer, potatoes and samosas for their appetizers and they are all great. Momos are good too, and their curry dishes are perfectly spiced with the right flavor. I take all of my friends and family to Chiya Chai when they visit and they love it as much as I do. My favorite chai is the Vanilla Nutmeg and I especially love the Kale & Potato Pie. I really like their wings with a side order of Chiya Chilli Potatoes. I'm not a big fan of curry but I did try their chicken curry and rice and it was pretty good. I always get the mule kick cocktail when I'm there. First time I went I was seated in the back room, which is nice for a date night. The second time I sat in the front room which does not have a waiter you must order at the counter and they will bring out your food. The last time I went I noticed a change in the backroom, it seems like you must now have a reservation to be seated back there. The service is always nice and welcoming which keeps me coming back to try different things on their menu. Although, ranked number one Indian Restaurant for 2017 by Chicago Magazine, will definitely bring me back to test the standards. Samosas were as should be, delicious, filing and crispy. Dipped into the chutney, rounded the dish. Two samosas for $5 makes for the perfect snack. The owner is remarkably friendly and invited me to their anniversary party. I've moved close to Chiya Chai Cafe last month and have already visited it thrice. My first time here was to grab some Chai but we ended up trying their momo's as well. They were amaziiiing! They come in this cute bamboo steam box and the presentation is a treat of its own. The veggie tends to become a bit too soggy tho. The chicken ones were excellent. I've also tried some of their other cafe food- the Vegetable jalfrezi (whos 4-5 chilli rating scared me in the start) was actually more flavorful than spicy. It had the distinct jalfrezi taste in it which took me back home. Now for the Chiya chilli potatoes- they're yummmmm. It has this crunchy coating which is to die for with the perfect sweet sour chili sauce on it. The chai selection/variety is pretty good too. I tried the cutting chai and tasted the pink himalayan almond butter chai. If you come here on a hot summer afternoon, I recommend to try their mango lassi which is delicious!!!! My first pit stop in Chicago for fun light dinner. Went for the bison momo dumplings ($8) and a appetizer for samosa($2 off during Happy Hour) came to be and coconut cream chai latte. Both had same chutney so ended up tasting the "same". Quality was akin to food cart level. For most people the main dish and a appetizer is enough for a filling meal. We had high expectations for the dumplings but were really disappointed. They weren't particularly flavorful and just fell flat. We got the eggplant, masala paneer, and aloo bodi curries. We loved the eggplant and the aloo bodi curries, but the paneer really lacked spice and fell flat for us. We also got the garlic paratha but it really lacked the garlic flavor we were looking for. Stopped one night with my lady friends and saw a poster that said "Ladies Night," and followed inside this nice back space. They also have dining tucked away at the back with a very modern Indian-ish atmosphere. 2. The food they serve is an eclectic mix of modern Indian and Nepalese food. It's what I would say neo-Indian if one such category exists. They are tasty, served in a generous portion and not too heavy like most other traditional Indian restaurants. 3. Finally, the crown jewel of the place is the variety of tea and chai they serve. The chai reminds of the spice induced flavored chai you can get only in the traditional tea shops in South Asian regions. There are plenty of options to choose from on the menu. If you are craving for the more western take of the chai, they have a separate column to choose from as well. You will find your espresso and cappuccino there, but then again, they made them interesting with interesting flavors. [4. Bonus] They serve traditional South Asian snacks and munchies in case you are craving for something light. I love the place.
