Indian food, and it's BYOB? Sure, let's try it out! Apparently, this place handles a lot of takeout orders, so much so that they have a dedicated takeout window where you can grab your food without entering the restaurant. However, if you prefer to dine in, you can: It's a small, no-frills restaurant. Keep in mind good food takes time, and though they felt a little slow with their service, the food was worth the wait. Chicken 65 is a little different at every Indian restaurant I've been to, and though this one looked a little bit different than what I was used to, it's just as good: The spice you desire, the crispiness you expect. The Butter Chicken was average, the Lamb Vindaloo was my favorite (the right amount of heat), and of course you can't go wrong with the Chicken Biryani. I like the spice room. But overtime I've watched them skim on things like their chicken portions to save money and charge the customer the same amount. It's truly unfortunate because their food is great. I don't think I'll be going to them any longer. read more

Good not great! Have an ordered a few times for delivery because we forget which restaurant we like the best after favorite closed. Both times the chana masala was almost inedible because of how salty it was! (Will not order next time if we do again) It's a pity because it has really great flavor but you have to coat it in rice or bread just to still be way too salty. AND I LOVE SALT. My pick for Saturday night and I was feeling like Indian. Brother Brent in town for the weekend on his way to Helsinki. Tried out The Spice Room, a semi-short walk from home. We got three different dishes- lamb tikka masala for me, chicken korma for Brent and chicken vindaloo for Donna. My lamb was tender but the sauce just didn't pop. Brent's korma was the winner, I thought, mild and flavorful. Donna liked her vindaloo, could've been spicier and also didn't pop with flavor. All in all, pretty average. We ordered dinner from here through grubhub. Unfortunately, they forgot the 2 orders of garlic naan, which we really couldn't do without. So we ended up ordering 2 more orders of the naan and driving there ourselves to pick it up. The food was actually really good, but I can't see us ordering from here again bc of how inconvenient they made our night by forgetting to pack the naan (we really were needing the naan that day!) Spice Room has actually become one of my top go-to options for delivery over the last year or so. There's a great variety and the food is very high quality with reasonable prices (especially as some other Indian options have jacked up the prices of late). My go-to options are: Paneer Tikka Masala - yes, classic option, but they execute it really well and the flavor is incredible Daal - really like their daal and I don't always love daal but there's less of a beany/lentil texture and it's smoother. Chicken korma - really good nutty sweetness Mattar Paneer - this is the only one that isn't great. Love the spice room. Evening I've eaten here has been fantastic, and keep in mind, the hot items on the menu truly are very hot even for people who like heat. Approach with caution!! Service is very friendly but a bit rushed. Not really the spot to lounge for hours. BYOB which is awesome and rare in this area. Easy atmosphere and usually there's space for walk ins. Disappointed with last nights meal - been a customer here since it opened but seeing obvious signs of cost cutting: 3.5oz of lamb in my vindaloo! This is our go-to Indian food spot in the area and it has never disappointed us. This past round, we ordered saag paneer, butter chicken, and chicken korma, along with sides of garlic naan and paratha breads. My go to spot for chicken tikka masala. I usually order take out and love the flavor and portion sizes that the Spice Room provides. My typical order is the tikka masala with garlic naan and veggie samosas. Their naan is always soft and fresh and the hostess is super friendly and welcoming. We came here for pickup on a rainy Tuesday. The pickup time said our order was ready so we headed over but we were told at the pickup counter it would be 15 more minutes. It seems like this place was busier than expected or the order pickup times need to be improved given everyone was waiting for a long time. SO SPICEY, the food was barely edible. I have a pretty high tolerance to heat (I usually order things on the medium-hot/hot level) and I crave spicey food but this was a *painful* spice. I almost thought maybe they accidentally added extra spice to mine because there's no way this would be edible for the majority of diners. I really wanted to like this spot as I had heard good things about it and the reviews were mostly positive. I gave it a try on UberEats and ordered a chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo with garlic naan. The naan was GREAT, probably the best I've had amongst the Indian food I've tried since moving to Chicago. It should be noted that the meat entrees came with their own sides of rice (I wish it had specified this on the meal delivery apps because there are a lot of spots that make you order basmati rice a la carte which I ended up doing because I was unsure). I ate about 1/4 of each of the meat dishes because I honestly could not stomach more it was SO spicey. I could taste a little flavor and what I could taste was good but honestly it was mostly just painful spice. As someone who LOVES spicey food, this just wasn't enjoyable. Because I have heard good things about this spot, I would love to try it again. I did a DoorDash order from here. I loved the food. I think the flavor profile was amazing, creamy, everything it should be. Now I just wanted to give it a 4 instead of 5/5 because I asked for spicy food. Maybe a 7/10 but jeez I got a 9/10 or 10/10 My dad eats extremely spicy and even he thought it was spicy. I couldn't touch the biryani, but the bit i had tasted amazing but my mouth was on fire. The butter chicken I got was tasty and since i ate it with naan, it helped a bit. I'd definitely recommend people ask for a 5/10 spice level. It'll taste great and have a kick of spice. I have been a (delivery) customer for many years. I always order the Chicken Korma Curry, and sometimes the Saag Paneer Curry. Both have been consistently excellent. However, that was not the case with my most recent order. Whereas in the past, the Chicken Korma would comprise three or four large pieces of chicken that would require cutting, this one was more like a soup! There was hardly any chicken, and the pieces were very, very small. It's apparent that they are focused on increasing profit margins while at the same time, compromising the quality of the product, that built their customer base in the first place. read more

The garlic naan was warm, although I wish it would've been thicker, the size was pretty wide. Overall would have a again. The wait time was about 15 minutes. When this place opened, we decided to try it out, but didn't think it would standup to our other favorite, Rangoli. Here we are several years later and it's like Rangoli who? Don't get me wrong, we still like Rangoli, but it's not a great option if you're entertaining people who are spice averse. The best compliment I can pay Spice Room is that they are consistent. We've never been let down with the quality of the food we order. The are a few standards we order like the samosas, garlic naan, onion kulcha, and the aloo paratha. All of them are really tasty and solid choices that won't let you down. Husband and I are creatures of habit he gravitates to the butter chicken or vindaloo and me the aloo gobi. For our most recent order, we decided to change this up. He got the bagara chicken and I got the gobi manchurian, which is technically an appetizer, but with all of the sides we usually order plenty enough for me. Great Indian restaurant in Chicago. Every dish my friends and I ordered were very flavorful and delicious. We ordered the Garlic naan which I love! Paneer butter marsala is my favorite as well, spinach and potatoes marsala, chickpeas, and veggie korma that has a kick to it if you like spicy food. You'll love the veggie korma. The staff is very friendly and all the dishes came out fresh and hot. We arrive on a Friday night and there wasnt a long wait at all. A great spot for Indian food! We got the butter chicken, lamb biryani, and garlic naan. I definitely recommend the butter chicken; it was delicious! The spices in the sauce were just right and the dish was very flavorful. I wish I got more of it haha. The lamb biryani was alright, but I found it to be a bit too spicy and aromatic. I probably would not get this dish again, but that may be due more to personal preference and spice tolerance. The garlic naan was also good and a good addition to our main dishes. I think this is a nice spot I'll come back to whenever I'm craving Indian food. The food is reasonably priced and the setting feels pretty modern and with nice decor. The midwest can't do spice. Yeah, I said it. There's maybe a handful of spots that kind of come close to the level of spice that I like and so I'm always hunting for my next fix. I give the Spice Room an "A" for effort. I ordered the lamb rogan josh because I feel like vindaloos can sometimes be too vinergary and didn't want to chance it. I came into the restaurant and ordered in person just so I could look whoever took my order in the eye and tell them to make it as hot as possible. You can't hurt me. The end result was that it was spicy enough to get me sweating a little, which is a plus but I felt like they held back a bit. The dish itself was crazy salty though but I ate it because the other flavors were great, including the lamb which was incredibly tender. I will definitely order some more dishes here next time as nothing by my apartment is even remotely spicy. read more

Who knew a modest neighborhood Indian joint would have such amazing quality food! Yes, we expected ordinary, standard, Punjab/Northern/Americanized Indian. The interior is just fine, but rather modest, with inconsistent lighting and casual table settings. But looks can be deceiving. First off, The Spice Room is clearly chef'd and staffed with care and attention. There are at least 4 servers in a rather small room and we were attended to regularly and without asking. Everything (including the sauces) is made from scratch. Second, the style is mid-India, think Maharashtra and Mumbai, with a rather large menu including plenty of vegetarian items. Third, and most important: The flavors are outstanding. Rich and complex. And believe me when I tell you they believed me when I asked for it hot, "like your father has at home." Plenty hot! And excellent. The mango lassi was on point as well. With very reasonable prices ($15-$18 for mains), The Spice Room has now been added to our core go-to restaurant list. read more

Better to eat in than order out. Food was pretty good, as was the service. Feels a little cramped, but not bad. Ordering take out however is another story. Normally, I check the bag to make sure I got what I ordered, but it was cold out and I was in a rush. It had my name on it and two items, so I figured all good. When I got home, I found out they got the order wrong. I asked for Kashmiri Naan not Pulav. I get the first two words are the same but Naan and Pulav sound nothing alike. OMG...it was good....REALLY good. We ordered pick up. Decent prices, generous portions, packaged well and good quality food. We ordered an assortment... The chicken Tikka platter, garlic naan, regular naan, chicken saag, bagara chicken, chicken korma and lamb roganjosh. The chicken Tikka was outstanding...so much flavor and tender. The saag was insanely good...I could eat it daily! The korma was also the best I've had! Other dishes were delicious but a bit spicy for me...both meats were cooked perfect! Covid-19 Isolation Review Very delicious, and spicy, Indian food. The ordering process is easy; we ordered and paid via the phone, so pick-up was easy and fast. We ordered- GOBI MANCHURIAN (Indo Chinese classic, cauliflower florets, spring onions tossed in Manchurian sauce). This was probably my favorite item we ordered, very flavorful and perfectly Indian and Chinese. It can be a meal itself if you add some rice. VEGGIE SAMOSA (triangular savory deep-fried turnovers with seasoned potatoes and peas). So good. And even though these are large, I wish there were more in the order. CHICKEN VINDALOO (succulent pieces of chicken in hot and spicy vindaloo sauce with potatoes). It was tasty and so spicy. I mean it, very spicy and very spicy hot. You could taste the different spices, but it also made my mouth hurt (so good). We froze the spicy sauce we didn't finish and added it to some chicken a few days later. It was pretty good. CHICKEN BIRYANI (basmati rice cooked with a house blend of spices and chicken and vegetables). This was a good rendition of chicken biryani; good spice, good chicken. Ordered takeout during a week night and when you pick up outside the window you can see what a popular pick up spot this is! We didn't have a ton of interaction with the service but the food we ordered was ready fairly quick and we ordered early in the night. We ordered subz sangam, Butter chicken, Haryali chicken, Aloo paratha, Garlic and butter naan with white basmati rice. Everything was great and the portions were large! I ended up eating my subz sangam over 3 meals. The haryali chicken was a little spicy so bear that in mind if you are not a big spice person. Next time I'd only get the aloo partha and garlic naan because the butter naan was a little plain. We'll definitely be back. read more

great flavor and fresh ingredients... the space is small and a bit confusing -- the front door is locked likely due to the MANY takeout orders. they encourage drivers to grab orders from the take-out window so if dining in, you'll need to give someone inside a wave :) the service was a tad slow -- again, probably bc of the abundance of to go's. we were with our kids so asked for everything mild as could be - i'd say that 3 of the 4 dishes i'd consider a 6 out of 10 spice level (i.e. not mild). luckily my kiddos have a spice tolerance better than me! my veggie korma was actually just the right spice and absolutely delicious. i would return for this and the bhindi. read more
