It's Lenten season, and throughout March I've been making an effort to explore more vegetarian options. This time, I visited Sukhadia Sweets and Snacks at 2559 W. Devon St., an area known for its incredible variety of Indian restaurants. A friend of mine wanted to ease me into Indian cuisine and suggested this spot as a great starting point. Since I'm in the final weeks of my fast, I needed to stick to some pretty specific dietary guidelines, and this place made that easy. I ordered the idli with sambar and a side of green chutney, while my friend had the rava dosa. I was able to try some of hers as well, and it was really tasty. The chutney was especially delicious and came with onions. I tend to prefer cooked onions over raw, but even so, the flavors were enjoyable and well-balanced. The restaurant operates in a counter-service style, and the cashiers were very helpful in answering questions about the menu. The space itself has a casual, café-style feel, more like a quick lunch spot than a full-service restaurant, but still comfortable enough to sit, eat, and have a good conversation. If you're looking for a quick, flavorful vegetarian meal in the area, Sukhadia Sweets and Snacks is a solid choice. Since this was my first time trying Indian cuisine in this setting, it's a bit hard to fully compare, but based on this experience, I'd definitely come back and explore more of the menu. 4 out of 5 stars. read more

Years later, Sukhadias never disappoints!!! I love it here and crave the homey atmosphere where service is still curt and confusing and possibly slow. But it's solid and you're going to love your meal. My youngest wanted to just plain Rice and they accommodated for her and threw in some extra sides like sambaar and yogurt. I love their packaged snacks which makes great gifts for friends and family around town as well as outside of Chicago. Their chaats are fabulous as is their coffee. You can't find Pani Puri everywhere so it was a nice surprise finding it here. All the ingredients were fresh and made to order. My favorite dish of the night was definitely the Dahi Puri. Fun fact: the difference between the Dahi Puri and the Pani Puri is that the Dahi Puri has yogurt. The spice level was perfect. The dishes had just enough heat without being overwhelming. Sukhadia's is such a gem if you're craving classic Indian comfort food. We ordered a little bit of everything -- the regular thali, dahi puri, samosa chaat, rabdi, jalebi, and chole bhature -- and loved it all. The dahi puri was hands-down my favorite: perfectly crisp, tangy, and refreshing. The chole bhature was also a standout -- fluffy bhature with flavorful chole that hit the spot. For dessert, the rabdi and jalebi were rich, sweet, and exactly the kind of indulgence you want at the end of a meal. What made the experience even better was the service. The staff were really kind and even went out of their way to cater to my friend's allergies, which we appreciated so much. Food: 8/10 This was my first time trying Indian food (besides butter chicken and lamb biryanis) and let me just say I really enjoyed trying the thin, airy bread, puri! I loved dipping it into the choke, which was a hearty chickpea dish with a bit of a kick to it. The samosa seemed to have vegetables and potatoes in it, and when I dipped it into the green sauce it was a bit spicy. The mango lassi was $4.50 and the combination of the sour yogurt flavor with the sweet mango blended so well in this drink. Service: 10/10 Family owned business! I would give them only 1 star not because of their service or anything but the food quality was super bad. They are in business just because they have name in market. At least what i tried today was not even close what a non professional cook can make. It was far worse than what you can make watching youtube. We ordered Papdi chat and aloo tikke with chole. Aloo tikki chole was like as if you boiled 2 potatoes and fried them in Oil and served. There was no flavor in the Tikki, chole were pathetic. Damm it who puts capsicum in chole. The chai and Coffee were very good. But in regards to snacks, its one of the pathetic place to be. Two times in a row now I have had exceptional service at Sukhadia (today being one of them).

I ordered two trays of sweets here for a catering party and they did such a great job providing an array of options and it was aesthetically pleasing! When placing the catering order, a manager let me sample a whole bunch of the treats. They were so fresh and delicious. Also, I've been here a few times to buy my all time favorite Indian treat- shrikhand. It's so thick, and sweet, and bright yellow. I love it. I can easily eat a container in 2 days. read more

Visiting this place every time reminds me of India. We usually go here when we feel like eating Vada Pav or Chole Bhature. These are the two items that I really enjoy at Sukhadia. Ordered a Rava Onion Masala Dosa this time and it was not a good experience. The dosa was very soft and it just didn't taste anywhere close to what an authentic rava onion masala dosa would taste like. The Special Thali was. We ordered Dahi Puri and Kachori Chaat. Both the items were substandard, bland and uneatable. Their service was fast taking into the fact that there were no other customers when we arrived here. Though they had no customers, they didn't take a bit care about neither the quantity nor the quality of the food they served. The puris they served for Dahi Puri were more of the size of papri. And yes as a cherry on the top, no one was wearing a mask, neither the one who took the order nor the ones who prepared our food. I strongly advise against visiting this restaurant or at least avoid ordering these two items in their menu. read more

The food was delicious as always, it was prepared and ready in time and packed nicely. They even advised how to get it delivered using Uber Package. This place has an impressive amount of chaat, snacks, sweet and entree options. The place is also very spacious to sit and enjoy a meal. I was super interested to get the khaman (dhokla). The owner asked me to come back after 30 mins as they had run out of it and they were still making more. I visited other nearby stores and came back after 45 mins and they took my order and I paid for it. But, they came back and let me know that they were not ready yet. They did not offer any refund - but asked me to pick another option. I ended up buying vada pav. The vada pav was well packed and was well made. I'd say the spice level was mild. My family and I absolutely love this place. It's bright and cheery and when we walked in the people behind the counter were more than willing to help us navigate the menu. We ordered a chaat, a dosa, samosas, and subji poori. That was more than enough food for us and we enjoyed every bite! This place is amazing! Not sure why it doesn't have more stars, but fear not and prepare to be delighted. Just like their name says, this is a snack shop that offers wonderful Indian sweets and savories. We've tried several of their desserts (including gulab jamun, which we often use to test a place and see how good it is), along with a few savory items like the samosa chaat, which is incredible. This is one of my favorite places in Little India and my husband, who grew up in Benares (northern India) is always happy when he leaves from here. Sukhadia's did a catering order for a Law School Diwali event and everything they made was amazing. We ordered Samosas, Dhokla, Bhel Puri and Mixed Mithai and everything was fresh and delicious. They made sure to provide abundant chutney with the samosas and Dhokla. They made the Bhel Puri easy to serve by separating wet and dry ingredients and the chutney they gave with it was a big hit. The mixed mithai was so fresh and not overly sweet and all came individually wrapped and the trays were decorated beautifully. We look forward to using Sukhadias for future events!! read more

I realized my Mum had been gone nearly 20 yrs...I have managed to teach myself a few a Bengali dishes; I fail miserably at deserts. And she was amazing at everything. I found Sukhadia on line, and they had a lovely selection of sweets they ship! Some items I knew by name, or photo, but there were a few items I only knew by the Bengali "slang name". Thankfully, Sukhadia provides clear descriptions, and everything I ordered was exactly what I hoped for. Everything was clearly hand packed, to the brim. And the boxes they use for each "pastry" so beautiful! Not one drop of syrup leaked! I am sooo excited to have Shondesh and Carrot Halwa. I haven tasted them since I was a child. An unassuming exterior with some delicious veg treats inside. I had the Samosa Chaat which was absolutely packed with flavor, and the dish was unlike anything else I had gotten before. The Gulab Jaman was pretty good and was a sweet foil to my main dish. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked delicious and was very interesting. This place is very authentic and doesn't cater much to non-desi folks so be prepared to bust out Google search if you aren't well-versed in Indian cuisine. I was craving ras malai and this was definitely the place to go to. They have many desserts freshly made and snacks. You could also buy desserts or snacks to go. They even had small bites to eat. I got the ras malai(2 pieces) and chocolate barfi. You could tell that the desserts were made everyday and were fresh and delicious. My significant other and I love going here for the following things: JALEBI - the best in town!!! Also, the following: 1) Sandwich Cham Cham - the malai inside is absolutely to die for! 2) Malai Jamun - Again, the Malai is delicious and the gulaab jamun half is soft and sweet. 3) Ras Malai - even though everyone who comes to Devon raves about Tahoora's Ras Malai, we prefer Sukhadia's as the texture of their Ras is so much better, and less syrupy and dense than Tahoora's. 4) Aloo Samosa - their Aaloo samosa is the bomb dot com! 5) Masala Banana Chips - SOOOO GOOD!!! 6) Chai - pretty good. Great take out place and ordering via Yelp's interface with GrubHub for pick up or delivery is so much easier than calling in. The menu has a long list of favorites for vegetarians but one downside is the lack of description. Here's some favorites for ordering: masala dosa (spiced potato in a rice and grain flour crepe is served with a spiced coconut sauce, lentil sauce - mildly spicy). Rava dosa refers to a mix of the grains in the dosa. Subji (leftover vegetable stew) paratha (wheat flat bread that's pan crisped with clarified butter) or pori (puffed fried flour and wheat bread). With the Subji dishes, it's culinary roulette, but Sukhadia will balance out one creamier vegetable curry with a tangy one, the spice level is medium to spicy for me, but someone else might say it's mild. For the bread fillings , I've learned over time that gobi = cauliflower, aloo = potato, paneer = a semi soft farmer's cheese, mooli = white radish A vada is a spiced savory donut with lentils in it, a delicious street food I'm told. And Uttapam (recently tried) is a thicker dosa, so if a dosa is like a thinner tortilla, an uttapam is like a Gordita. Enjoy read more
