Went on a walk around the city and decided to stop into Chiya Chai Cafe after seeing it all over my social media (I know! I'm a sucker for chai tea!). This place is right across the street from Millennium Park and it wasn't too busy on a Saturday afternoon. It is a counter service establishment, so all orders are to be made at the register and picked up once ready. The cafe is super small and would not be great for a group larger than 3. I got my chai tea and went on my walk around the city. The chai tea was delicious, but probably comparable in pricing to Starbucks (for the size of the drink). Chita chai is so tasty and cheap!! Definitely a great place to get some work done, read a book, chat with a friend, and enjoy some tasty food! We went in Chiya to grab a snack after a flight. I just wanted rice and naan and they were super accommodating. My friend got a bowl and thought it was tasty but a bit dry. The tea we had was really delicious and worth going just on its own. An impromptu dinner with our friends led us to this cool place which was On my list for a year now. Indian fusion done right and with authentic flavors too. Loved everything we ordered from the potato fries which had a very unique masala which was finger licking good... to the lamb in curry sauce . All The momos were soft and well cooked , we got the pork , chicken and veggie. The spinach paneer was the highlight of the evening and the lassis were frothy and delicious. The only dish we didn't like Was the cabbage salad, it lacked taste although the presentation was appealing.. Tea lovers, rejoice​! There are so many delicious Chai to taste. They also have other drink offerings such as Lassi and loose leaf teas. I went with what I was told was the most popular Chai, "Ginger Cardamom." It had a deep flavor with a bit of that spicy kick to it. I got it with almond milk which still kept it nice and creamy. I had my eye on the Salty Pink Himalayan with Almond butter, but I wanted to ease my way in first. We also got Samosa (2) & chutney (tamarind and cilantro). We also got the Darjeeling pork dumplings​. The samosas were amazing! So flavorful with all of its spices, but if you're not used to spice you may find yourself going back for more and more water. I loved the tamarind chutney which gave it a nice sweet and spice soothing taste. The dumplings had a bit of broth inside​ but were pretty tasty altogether​. Love the fact that they opened up a small counter on riverwalk and this review is for the riverwalk location only. 10/10 for their chai 8/10 for their samosa (this is really good and filling too) and 4/10 for the cauliflower rice bowl.. the cauliflower rice bowl lacked asian spices and himalayan flavors and some seasoning too plus the quantity is little for $12!! The samosa chaat i wish they had 2 samosas in there but they have just one in their chaat..no doubt the flavors are nice but if i compare it with other restos serving samosa chaat i would get 2 in their chaat for the same price.. I wish this place had their famous dumplings but unfortunately since this location does not have a litchen we will have to live without it!! Yet another delicious little spot on Milwaukee Ave. Very hipster/young vibe meant to clearly cater to a younger customer-base but it is more than just your local Gori Indian Cafe. I'm a huge fan of tapas-style sampling especially for a place that offers things like small plates. It is absolutely worth in order to get a little everything. Decided to with 2 small plates, our server highly recommended pork dishes so we went with the pork vindaloo and creamy masala chicken (i.e. butter chicken lol). I had read that this place has amazing wings, it was on a list of top 10 wings in Chicago so we definitely had to order those. And then you can never go wrong with Momos. Once again we went with the Darjeeling pork for those. Butter chicken was well made, solid butter chicken, surprisingly difficult to mess up, so glad they got it. Pork vindaloo was also delicious but wasn't as spicy as vindaloo should be, and usually it is made with lamb so using pork just didn't feel right. But otherwise they were both fine. The momos were honestly okay, the pork felt a bit undersalted/underflavored. But I have heard great things about the vegetarian momos here. Now the star of the show the WINGS! Absolutely the best wings I've had hands down. Everything about it was perfect. The sauce, the slight hint of chaat masala, very evenly tossed throughout, and garnished with red chili flakes. *chef's kiss* The chicken was cooked to perfection and thank god they were sizeable wings too! One of the best places for chai! I went for the first time this past weekend and ordered the chai flight- pink Himalayan, vanilla nutmeg and spicy masala. All were amazing!! We were a huge group so we got masala fries, veggie and chicken Momo's, samosas, and the potatoes. Everything was pretty good (the potatoes were a little spicy). I've been seeing my friend come here a lot and wanted to check it out for myself! My friend and I came in early January. The place is a nice cafe with modern decorations and a lot of natural lighting. We asked for some suggestions while looking at the menu. We ordered the Masala Curry fries, Prairie Bison dumplings, and Masala Chicken pie. The fries had good spice and the curry sauce tasted good as well. The bison dumplings and chicken pie were great although the dumplings were my favorite. They were big and gave us 6 for $8. It had some spice but nothing intolerable. Also loved the dipping sauces. As for the pie, I liked that there was a good amount of meat in proportion with the crust. The peach chutney and green apple Raita didn't add much to the dish for us. We also ordered the chai flight. We got the 5-flight because usually the glasses are small in any flight, but these were almost full sized glasses! We got the Dark Chocolate Spearmint, Caramel Sea Salt, Ginger Cardamom, Anise, and Coconut Creme. My favorites were the Dark Chocolate and Ginger Cardamom, which are two of the ones I picked. The Anise was good but I'll stick to that in my G&T. My friend loved the Caramel she picked. The Coconut was nice and sweet compared to the savory palette of everything else. I will definitely come back! The food comes out hot and freshly cooked, was bursting with flavor, and the chai flight is beautiful. Prices are reasonable. Wonderful flavor and even though the potatoes were smothered in sauce, they were still crispy! Delicious. The momo dumplings were a little bit of a disappointment - although the lamb and dill filling was good, steaming it in a dim sum basket was not the best because the wrapper completely stuck to the basket so the wrapper would break and the juices would be wasted. Sad. Sometimes in dim sum there's a little piece of wax paper so that it doesn't stick -- could be helpful. 3 stars for the chai teas. We got the chai fight which is awesome they offer so you can try a variety of flavors!! The issue is that all of the flavors were soo sweeet. Spicy masala did not have any distinct flavor. Pistachio and coconut were my favorite. The layout is very cool -- casual cafe in the front where you order at the counter and you can stay as long as you want working/studying with outlets by the tables. I think they normally have proper indoor dining, but with the transition from the pandemic, everything still had a fast casual vibe (the back dining area wasn't being used). We ordered at the front and they brought our food out to us. We got the pork vindaloo, lamb + dill dumplings, palak paneer, and a roti. Everything tasted good, tho I did think the dumplings were a little dry. Idk if it was the lamb, but inside the dumpling was one solid piece of ground meat as opposed to a filling. My bf thought the vindaloo was a bit salty, but I thought it was fine. Hands down my fave item was the palak paneer; so creamy and delicious with chunks of cheese all throughout. I really didn't want to knock off 2 stars for this review but I have to mention, right when we began eating and I served myself some rice (it came with the two entrees), I saw a huge piece of hair in the bowl :( We told one of the employees and she apologized and said she would talk to the kitchen and "management." Samosa chaat was full of vibrant flavors, and it had a light kick of spice. The horchaitea was sweet and refreshing. If you're not into chaat, the menu also has various curry bowls. The service was great, as the workers were kind and helpful; they helped me understand the portion sizes and got our food/drinks ready pretty fast. The ambiance was very warm and ethnic. I loved the Indian art pieces hanging on the walls. For being a rather small cafe, Chiya Chai actually has a decent amount of seating space. I came here a few months ago with a friend for a quick lunch. At the time, they offered both indoor and outdoor dining, and we were able to make a reservation for an indoor spot. I got the Chicken Masala Pie and Caramel Sea Salt Chai. The chai was delicious and fragrant, and the caramel sea salt flavor added a unique touch to the chai. The pot pie was fairly underwhelming as the dough to filling ratio seemed a bit off. There was barely any filling, and I don't think I had any bite of the chicken. My Indian friend and fellow Yelp elite brought me to Chiya Chai, and I loved it so much that I ended up going there twice in the span of two days. The second time I happened to be in the neighborhood and my friends were in the mood for a good lowkey dinner. Either way, that's how it good it was, I wanted to go again even though it'd been less than 24 hours. My first visit, we got the chicken balti pie and the masala chicken curry bowl, and both were super good. The second time, I wanted to try the momos, which my friend had warned me were not as good as the rest of the food. We got the prairie bison dumplings, which were decent, but not as wonderful compared to their other offerings. We also got the hot curry wings, which were also solid, but my favorites were still the chicken balti pie and masala chicken curry. But really, what shines at Chiya Chai is the chai. Not a surprise given their name, but I've never seen or even dreamed of a place where a whole board is devoted to flavors of chai, and the other board is a mix of coffee and tea. I've had chai before, but never like this. Chiya Chai is where I discovered my love for chai. We got a chai flight, which is incredible, and I was able to sample the ginger cardamom chai, maple pecan chai, spicy masala chai, and salty pink Himalayan with almond butter. They were all good, but I would rank it as spicy masala, maple pecan, ginger cardamom, and salty pink Himalayan from best to worst. I also tried the horchata chai, which was iced and good, but probably lower-ranking compared to their warm, yummy chais. All in all, Chiya Chai was lovely and can't wait to come back. read more

I'm relatively new to the Indian food game, but this spot has instantly elevated itself to the top of my list. I ordered the wings, bison mono dumplings, and pork vindaloo. The wings were incredible. I typically don't stray away from plain Buffalo style... but I was scrolling through the gram and these caught my eye. They were fantastic and I couldn't put them down. Easily the best thing I ordered. The bison momo dumplings were just okay. They looked incredible in pictures, but that's why you don't judge a book by it's cover. It reminded me of a beautiful girl on dating apps, only to meet her for the first date and it be a complete disappointment. They were really strong in flavor which may entice some. I'll try different things going forward, just felt like my mouth could start a forest fire with the stench from these things. Good texture tho! Pork vindaloo was also great. Not a ton to add here. We also ordered the Kathmandu Chicken dumplings and the Masala Chicken Pot pie. The dumplings were a bit pink on the inside which was a little concerning, but it was tender and juicy. The pot pie was particularly decadent and filling--flaky on the outside with DELICIOUS sauces. I could not figure out if I liked the pickled yellow sauce or the sweeter syrupy sauce better!! The food here is just ridiculously good, fresh, and creative. The sauces, chutneys and such, tasted so freshly made like no other Indian sauces I've had anywhere else. The masala chicken pot pie is the perfect comfort food with yummy, flaky crust. The drinks use Indian spices in them, too! Really unique! You order from the counter and seat yourself. There is a happy hour including discounted apps and drinks! I didn't personally love the dumplings, we tried the bison and they were a little too doughy for me. This is one of my new favorite finds. I love pot pie and I love chicken masala. Marry them together and omg! I was in love first bite. Their spicy pork pie is also tasty, but very spicy so have that milk ready. The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars is sometimes you'll get stale or later-dated desserts. For example, the first time I ordered from them I got the flourless chocolate cake and it was divine. The second time I ordered, we got the cake again and mango cheesecake. Both were almost at expiration based on their container labels and definitely tasted like it (stale and dry). I would hope in the future they just toss those and make fresh ones. I love finding Indian fusion restaurants because it promotes my culture with an American twist and Chiya Chai does a wonderful job of that! For those that love chai, GET THE CHAI FLIGHT! It's not written on the menu but they can do it for dine in only (3 flights for $7 or 5 flights for $10). I got the following: ginger fennel, coconut creme, pistachio cardamom, himalayan pink salt and dark chocolate spearmint. My personal favorite was the ginger fennel since I love traditional chai but all 5 were fantastic The food and chai prices are all very reasonable and they have great happy hour deals on Wednesdays and Thursdays - Wednesday - $40 for two meals and a bottle of wine - Thursday - 1/2 off apps, and $5 beer and wine I can't wait to be back here for more chai... and apps...and momos.. and entrees... and cocktails... and then be in a deeeeeeep food coma :D read more

During a recent visit to Chicago, my daughter recommended Chiya Chai Cafe for delivery, telling me they made curry pot pies. I was instantly IN! I love a pot pie and I love curry and I wondered why I'd never thought of combining them before. I ordered the Chicken Balti Pie and we shared orders of Chiya Veggie Dumplings and Masala Curry Fries. Love, love, love this place! Not only can you get delicious, authentic chai in many flavors, but the food is so good! You can grab a quick bite, chai (and more importantly chai flights) and lunch in the front of the restaurant or there is a more elaborate menu that in the back room for dinner. All meals are great!
