I recall at my wedding the wife and I basically didn't get to eat anything; we were too busy glad handing everyone and by the time we were done everyone had eaten most everything. My best man took us to Cho Cho San after everyone left the wedding. We'd all been many times before. Just a lot of good memories, birthdays, and anniversaries there. It's similar to Lupe's in that it's just one of those landmarks you never forget. I feel like Lupe's might have gone downhill a bit after the remodel but it's been many years since I've been. When presented with a big menu, this is a red flag for me but I always ask the server the popular or signature dish for recommendations. Staff were nice and fast service. This location has nicely decorated outside waiting area and front lobby has Samurai items. I ordered Yellowtail Yuzu sashimi, Unagi box, Chirashi bowl, and Ramen. Fish is decent for a sushi place. I didn't actually eat the food. The people seemed nice enough but I don't actually know the service. What upset me is that the online happy hour menu does NOT match the in restaurant happy hour menu!! It's nearly 50% more in restaurant. I was getting my tires replaced across the street and wanted to grab late lunch. Saw a sign that said happy hour everyday from 2:30-5pm. So I went online to look at the menu and was excited. Get into the restaurant, lo and behold, prices don't match online at all. And I was looking at the THOUSAND OAKS specific HH many. The people in the restaurant just kept saying, oh that's outdated. Then take it off the site. I know it's not their fault, whoever manages the site and company is responsible. It definitely soured me on ever coming back. read more

So...my family has been coming here for years...I don't think that's gonna continue. We went for dinner last night and had the filet and shrimp. The filet used be a nice quality piece of meat...but this little pathetic thin sliced piece of shoe leather they brought out was awful! It was grey to begin with before cooking and then tough as hell after! The rest of the food is the same as always...salty and over cooked. Now, for the kicker...they ask if it's a reservation for a birthday...you say yes...then, they bring out two scoops of ice cream with a candle...now keep in mind that we did not order this!! It's a nice gesture..but then you get the bill and they have charged you 6.50 for two little scoops of ice cream...that again....technically we did not order!! Every other place gives this out for free and really wants you to enjoy your bday! The yellowtail and albacore sushi was so good! My husband loved his baked scallop hand roll (Rock and Roll) and the encino roll was bomb! Also had a no rice roll that was fantastic! AND! Their uni was delish! One thing we did not like is their sushi rice is WAY TOO SWEET! Never ever have we had sweet rice at a sushi bar? Unfortunately it overwhelmed everything. Lucky for us my husband and I had the rarity of having the whole teppanyaki side to ourselves. It's my husband's birthday weekend so it felt like kismet. The food was great and I truly felt like it was huge portions. The only downside was the waitress was pretty blasé and flighty. I would say she spent about 2.5 minutes with us the whole meal. Went to celebrate Father's Day. I should have realized I would feel rushed out during a holiday. We literally got asked if we were ready for our check while halfway through eating and while we were still waiting for food we ordered initially to arrive. Our server either hates her job, hates working on Father's Day, or was just having an incredibly rough day. She wanted nothing to do with our group or the other group with us. I felt like no matter what we did she hated us. I still tried to tip her kindly enough, but goodness it hurt my heart to do so. Other servers seemed kind. Perhaps it was just our experience. Was bummed to be so excited for a fun surprise to be so let down. The two stars are for the food, because that was still delicious. Just the experience dampened the goodness. What a WONDERFUL experience today! Daughter Michelle was visiting from New Jersey with husband Barak and grandsons Gideon and Nadav - all celebrating our Sept, Nov and Dec birthdays! We lived in Thousand Oaks for 20 years and went to Cho Cho Sans for many birthday celebrations - so it was family tradition to go to this for the great food and the SHOW. Problem was we didn't know they stopped the lunch show and seeing how special this was for our family, the host Jeff made a SPECIAL text to Chef Tem if he could come in for US! And he DID!! Even though we were the ONLY customers in the habachi room, our server Lauren did a fantastic job and of course at the end they ALL sang Happy Birthday in English AND Japaneese!! We felt so special to have been able to continue our family celebration at our place even though our family is in New Jersey, Texas and NoCal, we aren't able to be together that often. I have been coming here for years for their Teppanyaki and the experience each time varies depending on what chef you get. This most recent time was with Chef Ten and he was fantastic all around. No complaints at all. Some chefs cook the food just perfectly (Ten did!) and others overcook it (in my experience is well overdone chicken). I love their salad dressing and the overall experience is great each time but I get concerned that if I order chicken that I can expect a more than 50% chance of another chef overcooking it. It's awkward to complain about food when the chef is right in front of you so hopefully your experience is good like my most recent time here. Also their fried rice is literally just rice with egg, no veggies in it, see the picture. About a decade ago they used to have a lot of veggies mixed in with it and I thought that was better. Overall I love coming here and their food is on average just ok probably explains the community rating of 3 stars. From my perspective is that the food experience is inconsistent and that some of their food items like their fried rice has gone down hill. For dinner time this is not a cheap place to eat. Expect to be dazzled by cooking tricks and fun personalities, but keep my concerns in mind! read more

Generally, I come here every weekend for the happy hour. But I was really feeling sushi and came around 1:20 in the afternoon. I tried to order the Cajun tuna with spinach. I took about 15 or 20 minutes for them to say they had no spinach. Then I was gonna order something else, but it took the new server another 20 minutes or so to get back to me so I could try and order something. Once the chef finally came to our table, he repeatedly singled out my girlfriend with comments and "jokes," making her visibly uncomfortable. It became so excessive that she left the table in tears. This dinner was supposed to be something special for us--she chose the restaurant because she liked it--but the experience was completely ruined and she barely ate. Well first of all, if you've never been to one of these places, don't think you're going to have a quiet and relaxing dinner. This is a fast paced, loud, and always moving environment. It's about the spectacle and show as much as the food. The food is good. It's not gourmet and high end. I had the steak, but didn't opt for the filet. I'd hope that would be better, but the steak was good enough and I didn't want to spend the extra $. The soup and salad are ok and basic. The soup is broth with some onions and I think a mushroom in there and the salad dressing was good. In addition to steak, I had scallops and my gorgeous date had shrimp, so we could have some of each. Again, they were good. They were not huge succulent shrimp like you'd get at a seafood restaurant, but they were tasty. Fried rice is always good, and I love all of the grilled veggies. The chef was pleasant enough and the server was always around asking if we needed anything. These places have been the same for decades, and it would be neat to see them innovate a bit. Maybe some different veggies, or shake up the "show" a bit? This is good for a once a year visit. read more
