Love going with the family to Tomodachi really nice bento boxes with lots of extras and their tempura is our son's favorite.

Tomodachi Newbury Park is kaput. It has been replaced by Mahina, which appears to be Hawaiian sushi.

I was so stoked to revisit this, once great, sushi restaurant. Then things became interesting. As I stepped in the restaurant, there was no one to greet me and take me to my seat. I waited for about 5 minutes until the lone sushi chef gestured that I sit at the bar across from him. There was a menu and sushi checklist waiting for me. I already knew what I wanted, and selected the coordinating boxes. The waitress took my drink order and instructed me to give the completed sheet to the chef. He informed me they did not have the salmon roe, so no problem. But then I took the sheet back and noticed he replaced my bluefin tuna with regular tuna, without asking or telling me. They were also out of quail egg. So far .. not so good. I mentioned then if he could make my smelt egg roll without rice and he said yes. Thinking he would wrap it in seaweed, he scooped out two lemon halves and served the smelt egg in two lemon halves. Frankly, the terrible presentation wasn't the issue, it was the chef's lack of experience and practicality. You should be able to eat an egg roll in one bite. He should know that. When I asked him how he thought I should eat it, he said I should scoop it out with my fingers. Wow. Really? When I asked for a small spoon from the waitress, it never came. My hot green tea was lukewarm and tasteless. The restaurant itself was clean but the bar counter was a little sticky. The yellowtail fish was good and fresh. Otherwise, I do not believe I will be returning, due to such deplorable customer service. I do not enjoy writing poor reviews, but was not expecting this place to fall from grace so fast. The only booster seat available didn't have working straps, which was an issue but we made it work. They gave the kiddo a free bowl of tofu. It's a neighborhood favorite of mine and the freshness is important for any sushi restaurant. The quality of the fish is there and the freshness is there. The prices beats Sugarfish and Seabutter for the portions you're getting. The Albacore Delight is truly delicious if you like ponzu citrus flavors. So yesterday, Thursday, I went to order some food to go. The red light open sign was on on the outside of the restaurant. It was a few minutes after 4 PM. I usually like their sushi and their prices. Upon entering, I looked at the menu and decided what I wanted to order and walked in and said hello hello! Nobody was around. Finally an employee who was sitting in a booth said hello, way behind me, not anywhere near the entrance desk or the sushi bar. He said they were not open yet. I said but oh your sign is on that says that you are open! He said yes I know but nobody is here and we are not open. I left. I wanted to write this review on that day, but I thought I'd give them another chance. So now it is Friday, I went in at 6:45 PM to order just one roll and one order of yellowtail to go. Love them. This place is an extension to our kitchen! Part of the family DNA! Their sushi and dinner entree's are always fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly and attentive always welcoming us with a smile and cheerful salutations! The restaurant is clean and very tastefully decorated. They can accommodate large party's as well. We felt like sushi and wanted to try a different place in town so after years of wondering about this place, we ordered takeout. We are not disappointed! The yellowtail sushi is fresh and is served with large portions of fish over the rice. It melted in our mouths! The spicy tuna roll was absolutely delicious. Tomodachi is a solid sushi restaurant if you are fan of no frills fresh sashimi style fish. I've driven by this location many times but it wasn't until recently that a friend and I were craving sushi close to home that we decided to give this spot a try. The ambiance and atmosphere left little to be desired though. It's definitely got a stark feel, not very warm or inviting so I was a little apprehensive walking in. However the servers were friendly enough and sat us right away. For a weekend evening the restaurant only remained about five tables full at all times. It was quiet and relaxing in that way as it didn't have the normal hustle and bustle some restaurants have on a weekend night. So if you want a more intimate private setting this restaurant would surely work. The service was a little hit or miss. I felt that simply out of the two servers on the floor, one was more on it then the other. We did have to ask for our drinks to be refilled which I'm never a fan of, especially when I find the restaurant to not be very busy. But then service picked up towards the end were we stopped having to ask and they were more on it. Also the sushi all came out together which was definitely a plus as when your dining with someone you want to be able to both eat together which sometimes is a barrier at sushi spots when they bring only a roll or two at a time. The sushi chefs behind the bar were friendly and again the meal was well paced. I felt that the prices were average. Not a deal but also for the area the prices were appropriate as the sushi was fresh and the bites were perfect in size. The menu as others have said wasn't innovative really, but at least they did the classics well and the menu would be easy to follow for an average sushi eater. Not an overwhelming amount of rolls to pick from but their nigiri menu was on point! Our favorites of the night were just the well balanced nigiri sections of salmon, yellowtail, and soybean curd. As for the rolls I would skip as we found we would rather spend money here on the nigiri. If your in the area and wanting a simple but fresh tasty meal of nigiri and sashimi this is definitely the spot for you. We also noticed a lot of to go orders so this seems to be the hot spot in town for takeout so worth remembering. I don't know if the meal was memorable that it would be on a regular rotation for me but if someone was begging to go I would surely give them another go as it's nice to have different sushi options on this side of town. read more

I thought I would try getting some Japanese teriyaki food for takeout. The server said it would be 15 minutes. 20 minutes later, she said it was being cooked. When I got home, the food was cold, like I had been given leftovers or the food had been sitting around. It was not good food and the customer service wasn't good either. Had a quick business meeting and decided on a place right off the freeway. Service was warm, friendly, and prompt. Was greeted immediately upon entering. This is my first time ordering takeout from this restaurant. I ordered a hand roll and two cut rolls and they were absolutely sublime. The rolls were super fresh -- spicy tuna, and an Alaskan roll. it took about 25 minutes for them to prepare the food and they had a pretty busy dine-in crowd tonight. The prices are reasonable I can't speak for the dine in experience though I've read some misgiving reviews. I can safely say that takeout experience was phenomenal. read more

Good solid Sunday sushi. The sushi is fresh and tasty. Favorite rolls are Alaskan, Tomodachi roll and Spider roll. Rainbow roll is always a good option as well. Favorite sushi bite is the Albacore. Service is good. Usually prompt. When asked if they have special Sushi of the day, they said "everything is special" which means No. no specials. So, while not innovative, they have good fresh sushi and at the end of the day.... That's what we all want. Honestly this place as well as their Westlake location is truly great. I feel the quality of their fish is up there with the top tier sushi restaurants that you'll find in LA. I've ate at popular places like sugar fish and this place definitely competes with them on the quality of their fish. Good food, Tuna Sashimi is really good along with the Hawaiian Cut Roll. They have good deals on box lunches/dinners, get a lot of food with rice/soup. Miso Soup is solid. The only knock of a star is the lack of waitress/waiter service. They only have one person working the entire restaurant, and when it gets busy there's a good wait for any refills, additional orders, and eventually your bill. read more

Had a nice dinner for 2 here. I'm newer to eating sushi so I can't make too many comparisons but all of the seafood dishes were fresh and tasty. The portion sizes were large too. The ramen wasn't anything impressive. Although I ordered the Tonkutsu Ramen and expected pork meat in it, it was just broth, noodles, green onions, an egg, and some herbs. The egg was absolutely not cooked for that ramen - the yolk was the hardest boiled yolk I've ever encountered in a ramen and had likely been sitting in a fridge. The broth was rather bland - I opted to make it spicy and it just tasted like spicy miso soup. The stuffed jalapeño appetizer with spicy tuna and cream cheese was very tasty, but it came out like 10 minutes after the rest of our meal (including the ramen) which was disappointing. We thought they had forgotten about it and didn't really want an "appetizer" anymore after diving into spicy soup. Service was decent - I asked for a fork with my ramen which I never got, but not a huge deal. All around the experience was good, but not exceptionally special, fun, or unique. read more

Best sushi place in Thousand Oaks! I am an avid sushi eater, so I have tried multiple sushi restaurants in Thousand Oaks. None have impressed me until I have come upon this restaurant. Now, I won't go to any other sushi place in Thousand Oaks except for this one. I've gone here 3 times now. I am unsure why the ratings are lower than expected, but it deserves better. My friend and I ordered the Plum wine (~$6) and Chardonnay (~$6), and both were fantastic; I was caught by surprise by how good the plum wine was. I always get the garlic edamame (~$6) for the appetizer. That dish comes out pretty quickly and it's a delicious and great starter. Lately, I've been getting the combination meals of A+B items ($15), and that comes in a bento-like dish, and it comes with a lot of food. When you order a combination or meal dish, it comes with miso soup! The combination meal comes with a salad, this cucumber salad, a slice of cantaloupe, a gyoza, a large bowl of rice, and the items that you've chosen the bento to come with. I'm always impressed and too full to eat the whole thing. I always enjoy the spider roll (~$12) and any of the no-rice rolls (~$14). The no-rice rolls are delicious and tasty, and you don't even notice the rice not being there. What I love about the quality of the sushi is the size of the sushi. These rolls are thick, like I want to say it has a diameter of about 2 inches maybe, which is probably why the sushi always fills me up. On a typical dinner, my friend I normally get the edamame appetizer, each get a combination meal, and split two rolls, and that is more than enough to eat. The price of the food is very fair, and you definitely get more than your money's worth. I always feel extremely full, and have leftovers for the next day. I'm always surprised looking at the check because I always thing that the dinner for 2 is going to be $100+ (because of how much food there is), but it has never went over that. The service of the place is phenomenal. There are two ladies who serve you and they are so friendly and kind. They always come and check in on you, and always have a smile on their faces. It brings such a warmth to the place. All the workers wear masks and hand sanitizer is available at the entrance. The restaurant is located at a large plaza, so parking is normally not an issue. What I love about this restaurant is that they very well accommodate people who have to be gluten-free. One of my friends has Celiac disease, and they have gluten-free soy sauce ready. If you tell the waitress that you can't have gluten, they easy accommodate it. Overall, highly highly recommend this sushi place! So delicious, great people, and awesome vibes. read more

I just ate here and WOW! I am beyond upset, I ordered ONE roll. I asked if the crunch roll could be not spicy so the guy crossed out the spicy part and put in my order. Then the lady came over to my table and asked about the spicy and suggested a different roll instead but was still a crunch roll, I said okay. My order came and it was so spicy my mouth was on fire then shortly after that another roll came out, I never ordered two rolls. The roll was horrible, then I asked for the bill and they charged for $16 for a Tomadachi roll. I didn't order that. The roll I ordered was $8.50 when I said something about this they just acted like they didn't understand. I AM BEYOND PISSED. It's not okay to overcharge people like that and I should have made a bigger deal, I clearly didn't tip them anything, I will never come back. I honestly just want my money back, I wish I never came in this evening, what a waste. Go somewhere else. Somewhere that doesn't do this to a customer, I just realized I was charged for two rolls. I tried to call multiple times to get my money back and no one answers the phone. I tried to go back and they closed early. I will be calling first thing tomorrow. I am so pissed. I totally forgot about this sushi place! I had been pre-pandemic and really enjoyed their happy hour rolls. Today, I stopped at a nearby store and saw that they were open for takeout and patio dining. I ordered 2 rolls- spicy tuna and a tempura shrimp roll. They were fresh and tasted great. Miss the indoor dining experience and happy hour. But I will definitely be getting takeout when I have a sushi craving. Support your local businesses so they survive!! On a side note: The lady at the cashier did not understand my simple question. I'm not sure if it was the mask or she didn't understand English?
