Less and less show...more and more food. Unfortunately the draw for teppanyaki is the show the chef puts on while preparing your meal. Our family has been here before and recently it appears the show has taken a back seat, which for us was the main reason to come here with our children. Maybe our chef Tim was tired? I saw him leaving in the parking lot with a smile. Regardless, there was no food flip into the kids' mouth, there was no choo choo train whistle, there was no laser light show, there was no little boy bottle putting out the fire, there was no design with the egg, just really a lack luster display. I don't think we'll take the risk of coming back for dinner and a show when there's no show to speak of. read more

We have only been here for happy hour. They also have a normal Japanese/sushi menu and a teppan room. I love the salmon belly and the hand rolls, both are on the happy hour menu. Happy hour is every say until 5pm. Hope to try the teppan some day. read more

I've been apprehensive about trying this place. But today we had delicious food and a great chef Mario. Honestly for $40 to get salmon, New York steak,salad and soup... that's deal these days. We cracked up and the kids loved it. Our food was bomb! Ask for Mario, the other guys look boring. But pleaseeeee update the ambiance! CHEF DAVID!!!! We love Cho Cho San. We have been coming here for years and it got to a point where we were almost coming once a month. My boyfriend and I are enthusiastic participants when the chef is at our table, but sometimes we find ourselves providing our own "choo choos" and providing our own techno beat when they do the little strobe light effect to make it a bit more lively. On Wednesday, we we're absolutely mind blown and couldn't stop cracking up at the amazingly fun, outgoing, and unpredictable show provided by David. He's making funny TV and movie references, he's pretending it's karaoke and singing songs...he's a diamond in the rough and made our usually enjoyable, yet predictable experience an absolute blast! My finance and have been talking about Teppan/Hibachi all week; we happen to live in Thousand Oaks with limited options for this type of food. Yamato in agoura has closed down and Benihana has also closed down. We saw the reviews and how many starts this place has and it almost deterred us from trying Cho Cho San but we decided to take a chance. The food was fantastic! We decided to go with Teppan and ordered the combo of New York strip and shrimp. The dressing for the salad that comes with the meal was slightly different than what I've had but I really enjoyed it; it has orange notes in the sauce which I loved. The miso soup was also different but fantastic. As for the sauces, I do think the white sauce was a little on the sweet side and I prefer it less sweet. However, that is the only complaint I have. Incredible and filling meal. Servers were young and seemed overwhelmed by our selection but still did a great job. The food came out very quickly, raw food was fresh, cooked food was cooked to perfection. The only complaint any of us had was that the egg rolls may have been just a little too well done. read more

We hadn't been to this restaurant in quite a few years, as we felt the quality had slowly gone downhill. Then a friend of ours told us she had just been there and everything seemed very good. My wife and I talked to some of our friends and we decided to have lunch here on a weekend. We were greeted very politely and seated at a Teppan table where the chef would cook in front of us. About half of us ordered from the Teppan table, while the rest ordered from the regular menu Everybody agreed that the food was very good, although some that had the Yellowfin fish said it was a bit overcooked. First and last visit. This is not Kisho. Supposed to be same franchise but it was terrible in comparison. 1. They sat my party of 3 with a 6 person family with three kids, one being quite young (2). There was not enough room at the table and that family didn't care that their two year old screamed and cried right in my wife's face the whole dinner. 2. The cook had zero personality, still wearing a face mask on June 17, 2024. Was he sick and shouldn't be there? If not how is this part of the atmosphere. 3. The food was utterly bland. It's like zero seasoning was put on the meat. Absolutely terrible. 4. The pricing was much higher than Kisho, and so not worth it. 5. Candy shrimp normally has a red sweet sour sauce and a spicy mayo. Ours came out with whipped cream. Whipped cream on fried shrimp. What? And $17 for that terrible appetizer? Serious? 6. They allowed a dog in the restaurant, not a service animal, who was barking as well during our dinner. 7. Forgot to add the menus were sticky and dirty. Whole restaurant felt gross. The obnoxious family we were sat with really screwed up the atmosphere but the food and service by itself was one star. Wish I had checked yelp reviews prior to going to see the 3 star rating and realize this is not Kisho. Anyway, terrible time. Poor food. Horrid atmosphere. read more

I think the average three stars is the appropriate rating for Cho Cho San. Let's start with the positives... The teppanyaki is good, the shrimp is great, vegetables good, New York sirloin was cooked well. Is fun for kids! The sauces were, meh... in my honest opinion they seemed watered down. The negatives. There was a squiggly black hair in my food (probably a mustache hair) attached to one of my shrimp. Definitely didn't come from the chef, probably came from the people who prep in the back, but obviously stopped me from wanting to eat anymore. I understand things happen and I tried to pick around it, but this isn't the cleanliest place overall and that hair just topped it off for me. The sushi - I just don't recommend it. I had a feeling it would be a hit or miss, but if you're not getting veggie or cooked fish rolls then I advise you to not get sushi. I had the yellowtail and tuna nigiri. The yellowtail was fishy, I didn't finish it and the tuna was so bland and strange it almost tasted like nothing. Overall the experience is fun, staff is friendly and the environment is good. If you're just coming for teppanyaki I'd say it's a fun time. The food just isn't that great and the serve forgot two of our dishes we ordered. I personally won't be back due to the hair in our food. read more

This place has lost a bit of it's magic. When you make a reservation, you expect to be seated at least near your reservation time. We have come here and the last 2 times we're waiting an additional 40 minutes past our reservation. I'm sure they do this so the chefs aren't overwhelmed all at once but still, I think they should respect the customers' time by at least seating people close to their times. The food has also suffered a bit in quality. Don't get me wrong, it's still a cool place but it could be a lot better. The bathrooms are oily and you feel like you're going to slip any time you walk in there. As for the service though from the wait staff, very good - they totally make up for the other shortcomings. We will give it another try but it might be the last chance. read more

Our dinner was delicious. We enjoyed eating at the teppan table and didn't have a reservation for a weekday (not needed and were seated almost right away). The sparkling sake was sweet and refreshing = A+. The soup and salad come with your meal. I ordered the chicken and shrimp along with fried rice. Plenty of food and enough for leftovers. Our experience was amazing! My family and I are Benihana fans BUT we live somewhat far from one. My husband picked this place for his 50th birthday & we were so happy with the service and the food. We got there and they sat us right away (party of 4) we sat for teppanyaki. Troy was our waiter and he was absolutely phenomenal, very attentive and on top of everything he was a very nice guy. Tim was our cook and he was so funny, he put on an amazing show and the food was excellent. Also you won't be disappointed in the portion sizes. They are huge compared to Benihana's. This restaurant has been in TO for at least 20 years. I haven't been in a while so we thought we'd try their sushi dining side. Presentation is nice, the service was attentive. Aw man I really wish I looked at the reviews for this one before sitting down to order. Just paid $80 for a half eaten meal because it felt like we were going to get sick, & I honestly feel sick writing this right now. Food quality is just not there... everything seemed old and just not good. Especially with sushi you want fresh fish and this just wasn't it. The tempura was soggy. The wasabi had a crust formed on it like it was sitting out for days. Also our table was sticky & dirty we had to have them clean it, and the menus were grimy too. I came here for the first time last month for my birthday. Everything we had was amazing! I had a roll with seared steak and shrimp tempura in the middle, absolutely delicious! Also ordered a small salmon skin salad, again, flavor and crunchiness of the salmon skin was just perfect and not greasy. Everything was fresh and the roll was served warm. Only thing is that they didn't ask us if we wanted dessert, but it was also 15 minutes before they closed, so can't blame them if they just brought us the check so we would leave sooner. The food was so good, I wanted to go back the following week. Tried the same roll, but this time the rice was lukewarm and the seared meat on the roll was cold. I still ate it, but it was a bit disappointed. I did ask for dessert that time, tempura green tea, it was delicious! A bit much for 1 person, but I loved the fresh strawberries and something else on it. I did scrape off the whipped cream, was a bit much. The service was excellent that day, coincidentally, it was the same waiter we had the first time. I definitely want to come back again and try everything else on the menu!!! read more

We have been dining with Cho Cho Sans for years but after tonight they will NOT get any further business from us. The past few times we have door dashed little things happened and we let it go. Tonight we placed a 100.00 order through DoorDash and when the food arrived my husband's order was not complete. He ordered three rolls and not one of them came with the sauces listed on the rolls. They also didn't include wasabi or chili oil. When we called we were told we could drive to them and pick those items up. My husband explained it wasn't our fault and asked what they would do. He was told a manager would call him back. Over an hour went by so my husband called again. He asked for the manager. The phone was put down so we could hear the gal tell the manager we were on the phone again. He told her to hang up and the call was disconnected. My husband called back and was told he would get a call in the near future. I called and asked who the manager on duty was earlier and told Arby(don't I know spelling or if even correct name). So if you are planning to order from this place... consider Love Sushi..,they are always friendly and orders always seem to be correct. Bye bye Cho Cho Sans!! I've been living in Westlake Village for 14 years and never tried this place until today and what a miss that's been! I can't believe a teppan table was in my own backyard, thinking I had to go into LA for that! Stopped in today for lunch and had the sushi roll lunch special, which is 3 hand rolls out of 6-7 selections. Had the shrimp tempura, California avocado and crab, and shrimp hand rolls and all were excellent. I also had a shrimp tempura ramen with the soyu soup base, and I've finally found a place for Hawaii tasting and style of ramen. I know I was getting filled up, but seeing the busy and popular sushi bar, I asked if they had sweet shrimp. They did! So I had to have one of them! Done perfectly! The service was fast and no waiting for a table or the order, even with the busy Saturday lunch time. Parking was huge in their own lot in back. I checked out the teppan table dining room and saw 6-7 tables. Am going to return for either lunch or dinner at a teppan table. Prices are reasonable, for sushi or ala carte or for the teppan table selections. read more

Walking through the front doors reminded me of some of the fancier places downtown. The restaurant was much emptier than i anticipated it would be. However, the restaurant is separated between the sushi bar and their hibachi grill, which was nice and packed. The food is... not great. I will go in order. The rice was wonderful, but it sat and got a good film over it before it came out. It's understandable for clumpy sushi style rice, though, so it's a pass as it was tasty. The sashimi was clean and fresh tasting and was very tick cut. Steak was stringy & tough. I can blame it on a particularly bad cut. The carrot sauce for their salad? Tasted like indian food. Not even enough spices to make it taste like indian food even. More like my salad just sat next to a plate of indian food and absorbed more essence than the sauce could give it to begin with. It just wasn't good enough to taste like much. Which is what i found to be the case for the rest of their sauces. The wife gave me a bite of her marilyn-mon-roll (cute name), and the sauce slathered on it was just thick soy sauce. The shrimp tempura topper was absolutely undercooked. And the roll itself otherwise was the equivalent to a $9 Ralphs Krab roll. I wish i could comment on the baked crab roll, but they gave us the wrong roll, and my wife wasn't in the mood to eat that one, so we gave it back to the waitress. Speaking of, the waitress was wonderful. She was attentive and prompt in all her service. Give that woman a raise. read more

Went to teppan tables with our son and 5 of his friends as a going away to college sendoff. After taking our order, our waitress was difficult to find (until time to pay the check, of course). Had to flag down the manager to replace 2 plates that were chipped. Also had to flag down another waiter for chopsticks, napkins and water refills. Teppan "performance" was non-existent. No interaction from chef. The teppan tables aren't really our thing but just thought it would be fun for the group. Will not be going back and would not recommend it to anyone else. read more
