I am extremely disappointed by my experience at this salon. During my visit, I felt that I was treated differently because of my race. While I remained respectful throughout my appointment, I experienced behavior that made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Specifically, when I was told to pay before my service was done. As a paying customer, I expected to be treated with the same level of respect and professionalism as everyone else. Whether intentional or not, the experience left me feeling humiliated and disrespected. No one should leave a business feeling singled out because of the color of their skin. I hope the salon takes customer concerns seriously, reflects on how clients are treated, and provides better training to ensure every customer is welcomed and treated fairly and respectfully. read more

Awful experience!!!!! I asked for regular French pedicure and was told it was a $30 up charge which I know isn't true because my white passing grandmother went the previous week and got the same exact thing I asked for at the regular price. Once the service was complete and seated in the area to dry my nails, I was told I needed to hurry up and pay even though my nails were still wet. I will never return here!!!! There targeted customers are old white ladies!!! If you are a POC who looks like a POC you will be treated differently!!!! Awful place!!!! My sister and I had gel manicures and the keratin hand treatments. Kimmy and Lucy were our technicians and they really rocked it! So, i was really happy with this place at first. I got my nails done yesterday- i treated myself to a specialized pedicure. They told me they couldn't do the acrylic powder wrap over my nails so they did the dip powder- i didn't have a good experience the first time i did the dip so i was really hesitant this time around. After everything was done i was really impressed with everything until- my nails started cracking. 12 hours haven't even passed to where my thumb nails have visible cracks in them, my index finger already chipped. I am extremely disappointed. I feel she filed my nails too line to where my nails are cracking and chipping left and right. Visit this place at your discretion. UPDATE: went today sept 13, i had to go get my nails fixed because my whole thumb chipped and came off. I explained what happened- they were able to fix my nails free of charge but i was only able to do gel. I wouldn't recommend this place if you want acrylic done but they are strictly regular mani, UV GEL which is $70 and regular gel which is $40. I don't think I'll be coming back to this place again. read more

I live in Westville and have several friends who come here regularly but I had never been here before and unfortunately don't think I'll ever be back. I called an hour before close on a Sunday and asked if I could still come in for a pedicure and was told that yes, they could accommodate me. When I got there 10 mins later, my technician tried to convince me to get a new spa pedicure they just started offering that was $40 more than the regular one and I politely declined and went for the basics. Within a couple of mins she had cut one of my toes which bled throughout the rest of my pedicure. While she was apologetic, it wasn't a great start and hurt quite a bit. The pedicure was just ok, there wasn't much to it and the hot stones were barely even warm. She also left wax on one of my ankles! In my own naivete, after being told there was also time for a manicure, I went for it. The same girl whose name I didn't catch proceeded to give me the worst manicure I've ever had. My cuticles were air cut, the tool barely even touched my skin. My nails were filed crookedly, there was polish left on my skin, and bubbles on almost every nail. They were waiting to close and started turning the lights off while she was in the middle of the second coat so it's not shocking that it got worse from there! I have never in my life not left a tip but this was a really terrible experience. A woman (the owner?) had the nerve to come over and asked me if I accidentally left out the tip, and when I mentioned my bleeding toe and showed her the uneven manicure, she said that next time I should come earlier and they wouldn't be in such a rush! Well, next time don't tell me you have plenty of time! Really disappointed with the attitude and overall service. A friend of mine is loyal customer of Chocolate Spa and has invited me down a couple of times to join her for a relaxing time at the nail salon. I have gotten a gel manicure as well as a pedicure on a couple of occasions. The service is always extremely friendly, and the salon is never too busy. It seems like there is a good structure of making appointments here. The one thing that separates this salon from my home salon is that they give chair massages! I'm not exactly sure how much they cost but they're not too expensive. I usually go with the 10 minute and they know how to work your pressure points. After a relaxing pedicure and manicure, this massage just takes your relaxation and puts it over the top! The one thing that knocks down one star is for some reason my toe polish never seems to last as long when I come here. At my home salon I could literally let my toe nails grow out and the polish would never chip (haha) but the last time I came here, mine chipped within one week even though I sat for a long time under the dryer after I was done. But, I would definitely recommend this salon; try out the chocolate pedicure! read more

This was, by far, the worst manicure I have ever had. The nail tech used the drill on my bare nail, attempted to cut my cuticles without any kind of cuticle oil, and returned the clippers to the drawer without sanitizing them. The table was gritty before he even started working, everything just felt dirty. I know I tend to have "stiff" fingers, but the nail tech visibly rolled his eyes each time he had to direct my fingers. He provided me with what I can only describe as a small cardboard box covered in dirty black tape as a bolster, despite the fact that there was a regular bolster right next to him. By the time he finished the manicure, I looked down to see that every single nail had bubbles. He clearly noticed too because he took the drill and unsuccessfully attempted to smooth the nails out. They look like absolute garbage and I'm sure will crack over the next couple days. Worst of all, the last thing the nail tech does is take out the file and proceed to file my very regular length nails down TO THE QUICK and rounded. I only noticed how short he was filing them when I felt pain because he was literally filing the skin under my nail bed. When I say I was horrified when I saw my right hand... they look like tiny tombstones. I can't believe I didn't bleed. I said, "Oh, these are very short and very rounded... please don't make the nails on my left hand so short." He said, "You asked for rounded." I said, "No, I asked for almond and to keep my natural length." He immediately appears to be not only irritated but furious. He stands up and whips his gloves off, gives me a filthy look, and just walks away. I'm left sitting with my nails ruined and 70% finished. I literally had to ask "Excuse me, is anyone going to finish my nails"???? What in the world?! The manager ended up finishing my nails. She asked me what I had asked for, and again I repeated almond. She has the audacity to respond, "Your nails are too short for almond. Next time you need to get tips like mine." Like??? They weren't too short until your nail tech ruined them?! At this point I was fighting back tears, so uncomfortable and counting the seconds until I could leave. I cannot believe that this is a real business. I HIGHLY doubt that the "nail tech" is licensed, there are too many details to list but he truly did not seem to know what he was doing. Between that and health department codes this place should be permanently closed. read more

I have tried this place at least three times. The first time, I was so impressed by the vast nail polish selections--tons of Essie and Opi. They also have a great inventory if you want to buy polish. The polish is a few dollars more than a drug store, but you can walk out with the same polish on your hands. My next two visits (also my last) were pretty much the same. Apparently, all of the nail techs live in NY and rush back at store close. Even if you have just been polished, you only get to dry for about 3 minutes, then they spray your nails. Of course, you are more prone to snags and mistakes. They will sloppily fix them but send you out. The service is very disappointing. Unfortunately, they do a fast pedicure and you barely have a chance to soak your feet. I gave it two stars due to the polish selection, clean space, and sterile instruments. I have been a customer for many years. I'm usually very loyal to establishments that I'm comfortable with and have a good rapport. I was even given a rewards card that tracked your visits and accrued points (allegedly). Here's my issue. Each time I made an appointment I would ask for a balance. You would need to have spent a certain amount in order to use the minimum balance of $10. Prior to covid I was given a receipt that stated I had the required balance. Each time I schedule an appointment I give my telephone # because that's how they like to look up the card without having the physical card on your person. I'm either told there is something wrong with the computer or the computer was turned off because they are getting ready to close, and the latest excuse was the card don't work anymore. After all this time being a loyal customer even after they changed staff, they began using a machine to cut your cuticles (which they NEVER used to do thus the reason I enjoyed going there) and do not keep up with the latest nail fashion amongst other things. Service is mostly a miss and they are bit shady when charging. Twice they have "accidentally" over charged me. The first time they did it, it was a shit show; they over charged me by $100 because the girl who was doing my nails didn't speak English well and claims to have misunderstood how much I wanted on my gift card. They had trouble figuring out how to reverse the charge but when they finally did figure it out, they were apologetic. I forgave them, gave them the benefit of the doubt... honest mistake, right? Sigh. Went back, like a masochistic, to use the rest of my gift card. The lady who did my nails this time was a straight up smart ass. She gave me a stink look and told me the color I chose was too light. Well thank you Ms. Fashionista! No one asked you though. This ray of sunshine then went on to complain that my hand was too stiff and heavy. Is this chick for real? I was counting the minutes to get out of there. Finally, time to pay. I look at the bill and its over by $5. I pointed it out to her and they first thing out her mouth was, "I was tried when I was doing the math, its not my money, I wasn't paying attention." Thank God for restraint and grace because I was one second for dishing out a few choice words for this genius but I thought this review would be a better response. The spa itself is nice and big. Pedicure was good. Manicure was one of the worst I have ever had. 1. I don't think the guy was licensed to do this (or the pedicure-but at least he did OK with that) 2. He was slow 3. Kept applying my nail polish and then taking it off and reapplying-must've done it about three times. 4. Talked about a customer in front of other customers 5. Did an incredibly sloppy job (he rushed towards the end because he knew he was taking a long time)-leaving air bubbles, smears and even PAINTED MY ACTUAL FINGER (my SKIN) With all that said, I would actually go back but ONLY if I get someone else. read more

I've been going to Chocolate for a few months now for gel manicures and pedicures. The staff has always been very friendly, but I have always made appointments in advance and never walked-in. I also haven't been pressured for any of the add-on services, but I normally splurge for the cucumber pedicure, so that may be why. My one complaint with the salon is that two times now, my gel manicures have needed a bit more cleanup than the technician has provided. A friend of mine bought me a gift card for this place as a gift, and as someone who had never gotten my nails done, I was pretty excited to use it. The first two times I came here, the manicures were perfect and I had no complaints. The third time I came here, my nails were chipped within two days. The last time I came here (today), the lady seemed very rushed. I had been sitting under the nail dryer for what seemed like an exceedingly long time, with no other customers besides a couple people that got their eyebrows done. Everyone was just sitting around talking. I looked around, but didn't see the girl who had done my nails. Finally I took out my phone- my nails were dry, and I'd been sitting there for an hour. This is a great place for a mani/pedi! The salon itself is nice- clean, bright and modern. They have a large array for colors, both OPI & Essie to choose from, they do an excellent job. The people who work there drive down from NY everyday to operate the salon. If that's not dedication and commitment to service - then I don't know what it. I mean really if gas is $4/gallon you're not going to drive 60 minutes to get to work and do a bad job, right?. AND...they still give the shoulder massage while drying. I was using another nail salon in Westville, and I had two terrible manicures in a row, so I was LOOKING for a new place. I found a gem. Tonight, I had my third gel manicure at Chocolate Spa and Nail, and I have to say, I have had three of the best manicures I have had since I left Manhattan. They are clean, they are thorough, and the manicures last a long time. They charge 30 (most in this area charge 25) but I am happy to pay the extra five bucks for the great job they do, and like I say; the manicures last a long time. They also offer massage, and I would like to try that one day as well. So I will update. Also, I am due also for a pedicure. I assume they must give great pedies as well because the pedicure bar is FULL, so they must be doing something right. Highly recommend this place! read more

This is my spot to get my nails done! I love everything about this place, from the soft color on the walls, the nice music they play, the consistent good work on my nails from all technicians, the amazing massages (while you dry or paid massage), and so much more. They pay attention to little details like the hot stone massage during your pedicure, fun freebies during certain times of the year, and just overall making you feel special. Oh....and the price is super reasonable! I even have a friend who left her nail salon to come here because of the amazing pedicures. They kept pressuring me to purchase more add-one to the pedicure because "I need it". I asked for a gel Set, and was given acrylic extensions, which would be fine, but I was charged 80$. Then, ten dollars per nail for nail art. I was upset that the woman used the drill on my natural nail, and showed her how raw it was, but she blamed me for having sensitive fingers. Can't say enough good things. Definitely no frills but I've *never* had to wait for a service. Literally never. There is always one more person available no matter how busy they are. Waxing is great - I've had people ask me where I get my eyebrows done. The pedicure with chocolate is great. For $10 more than a pedicure with callus removal you get a facial for your legs, paraffin treatment, 10 minutes foot massage, and a hot stone massage for your legs. read more

I moved to New Haven a year ago and spent months popping around to different nail salons trying to find one I could call my own. I was underwhelmed at each and every one until I tried Chocolate. I'm writing this review in the pedicure chair right now. I've been coming regularly for a few months now and have nothing bad to say. The spa pedicures have all the bells and whistles....callus remover, hot towels, paraffin wax, leg mask, scrub, and (my favorite) a 10 minute massage *that they put a timer on for so you know they aren't skimping!* I've had several different nail techs and all have been great. I probably prefer the men a tad for the pedicures as I like a really strong massage. I'm a gel manicure gal, but I'm really picky about them and too often nail techs rush. If even the *slightest* bit of gel is on the skin it will lift and/or get caught in my hair, etc. It bugs me so much I bought my own light and gel colors to do my own. Sometime so like to feel pampered though! I've had gels 4 times at chocolate with 3 different techs and each time they have been perfect! I prefer gels for the longevity, but I've had regular nail polish put on here too and even it has lasted a full week! Incredible for someone as hard on her nails (and a picker) like me. Chocolate is a bit pricier than some "Asian nail salons", but the quality of their work and the whole experience make it worth it. I have found my new salon :-) read more

However I showed up and said I was here for a pedicure, and she rolled her eyes, gave a big sigh as if to imply they were so busy and said, "Fine, but you'll have to wait awhile." She then proceeded to tell another customer who was waiting how they never get a break because customers are constant. What an awful way to act toward customers as if we are a burden. So I have been coming here pretty regularly for a few years. As a result I am upgrading my review because things have improved over the past 2 years (or I have adjusted my expectations). I pretty much stick to manis (with or without gel polish) and pedicures (I usually splurge on the hot cream pedi as it includes a 10-minute massage). Occasionally an eyebrow wax or chair massage. BUT I now call ahead and make an appointment and I feel like that makes all the difference. I have tried other places around town but out of all the nail salons of this type (quick, affordable) in the area, they are the best I have tried. Are they perfect? No. Do they get busy on Thur and Fri eves? Of course. You can't go here on a Fri afternoon and expect a leisurely pampered experience, it is just not going to happen. But come here on a Tues at 1 PM and you'll feel like a Queen, LOL. Grace is my favorite tech but really, I like everyone well enough to let anyone do my nails. You just have to be vocal about what you want - cut or file? Trim or push back cuticles? Square tips or round? They are happy to accommodate, you just have to speak up. Language can be a barrier with a few of the techs but someone else usually pipes up and explains to my tech what I need if they aren't getting it. Frankly, unless something goes terribly wrong I won't go anywhere else. I feel like they know me now (and they know I tip well when they do a good job) and I believe that has made a huge difference. :-) read more
