Considering that no place around here offers anything like it, Choice gets the highest marks. To open an authentic French boulangerie/pâtisserie/épicerie de quartier so off the beaten path shows courage and intelligence. Their prepared food and pastry cannot be recommended enough. To those whining about overcrowding: deal with it. It's a testament to their success, and three seasons a year the ample outdoor seating is perfectly suitable. There are plenty of uncrowded bodegas around here where you can get lukewarm coffee and snack cakes wrapped in plastic. If you're going to snob-out about seating, please go elsewhere. I'll continue making my Sunday morning strolls over from Bed-Stuy for coffee and the best petit pain au chocolat I've had outside of France, to be enjoyed all the more without you. read more

This place will make your mouth water, just thinking about it. I feel like a kid in a grocery store checkout line when I'm approaching the till....."oh this looks delicious, oh that sounds good, I think I'll get one of those for the road, oh gee I forgot about these....." - when all I intend on getting is a cup of coffee. Choice is what its name implies - full of choices. You can't go wrong here, whether you want fruit, pastries, breakfast, lunch, dinner....the selection is always overwhelming, in a good way. The staff is always working hard too, if my order takes a little while, I know it's because they're busy and not slacking off. Delicious - worth every penny (and they don't charge too many pennies). Add stars for providing soy milk at their coffee-doctoring station......that balances the 2 stars I would've taken away because their coffee isn't very good.....I think maybe they brew their coffee after having brewed tea through their machine? Who knows, but the coffee does have a weird minty taste from time to time, and is a bit watered down---it's scalding hot too, be careful unless you want those dang burned bumpies on your tongue! read more

Oh my god, I want to get one of everything; I'll have one of every scone, muffin, croissant, roll, pie, tart, bunt cake, pastry, bread, yes, please. Their made-to-order savory fare of omelets and brunchy stuff is quite nice though you will be hard pressed to find a table or chair to enjoy it at, but if you are patient, something will free up. This joint is cute and bumping and could be a tad more efficient in the service department, though its charm would probably suffer as a result. Accepting credit cards would also be really convenient. Who carries cash around anymore? But the secrete awesomeness of Choice Market is that after 5pm, muffins, scones and croissants are all $1! Freakin' amazing and still very fresh. Everything looks so scrumptious. Really. But some of the people behind the counter are obnoxious. And, they don't have a toilet for customers. This pisses me off beyond words. Gasp! The cramped room and rather long line for a Wednesday at ten in the morning may put some people off, but clearly it's just the price of admission into one of the most committed eateries to be found in Brooklyn. Converting an ancient deli into a bakery, without losing the original deli capabilities, is quite a feat. Pre-packaged salad, along with prepared pastas, fish fillets, roast beef, and veggies, are all the first things to see from the end of the queue. Once those who have made it to Choice ahead of you have shuffled along, and the cupcakes and tarts and sweets have passed by, there's still some exceptional coffee and baked breakfast items to take with you. An egg sandwich with bacon, goat cheese, tomatoes, and eggs on perfect grain bread grilled to perfection. Such a breakfast sandwich, which in what is probably a nod to the place's history, is the size of a traditional deli sandwich. Along with a smooth and sublime chocolate croissant, along with a strong iced Americano, this place, as Ferris would say, "It is so choice." read more

There is no way to get food from this place without waiting at least 20 minutes, though it's usually closer to a half hour. I vowed to stop going but walked by the other day and saw that there was absolutely no one in there - "surely it couldn't take longer than 5 minutes to get a sandwich," I thought. Well, 20 minutes later when I asked if they had made any progress on my sandwich - "the lunch special" - they seemed confused and then realized they had made the wrong thing - some sort of pasta dish. Instead of apologizing and trying to get my order made quickly, they kind of laughed and bickered amongst each other. By then a bunch of other people had come in and my order somehow got demoted to the back of the line. If I hadn't already paid I would have walked out. Instead I had to wait another 20 min. Close to an hour for a sandwich when there was literally NO line! I've gone through the trouble of retelling this because it's the norm - not the exception at this place. The food is quite good though, I should say, if you're ok ignoring their recent C rating... This was so amazing! I wish I had a place like this where I go to school. I'm totally jealous of Pratt students. They have everything from simple pastries to fancy pastries, to traditional breakfasts and also yummy sandwiches. All their sandwiches are delicious and reasonably priced at around $6-7 but have great ingredients in each and every one of them . I have to admit that the wait can be a little long, but it's worth it. Your sandwich comes out hot, pressed and toasted like a panino so it's nice and warm. Choice is actually a big step for me, because it's OFF campus. Sort of. It's as close to being on campus as off campus gets. It's just close enough that it seems like it might as well be ON campus when you realize your other option is the Pratt cafeteria, and you're already about to headbutt the next shrieking, precious undergrad you trip over. Anyway, the coffee is good, the baked goods are GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD (too good, stop being so good, why do you want me to be a pig, Choice?), and the service is bastardly. Why are you glaring at me? All I asked for was a small coffee and a chocolate croissant. This requires 2 small arm movements on your part, not including the one where you take my money, why are you looking at me like I asked you to bake me a cake and do my taxes while performing the presidential fitness test and orally pleasuring a series of unattractive homeless men, lady? Sweetest server ever even with a huge line. Saturday morning coffee go-to! Their service is impeccable, the food is out of this world. Their coffee put a jolt in your step without tasting like it is going to make your world spin upside-down. And oh lawdy the baked goods, I could put on 20 pounds and burn a hole in my pocket here without a stitch of complaint. I'd give this place all the stars in the world if it weren't for the fact that everyone knows how good it is and it has been super crowded every time I have been there -- so it is not their fault they lost a star for the overcrowded atmosphere but I also don't think a 4 instead of 5 star review is going to hurt them either! I used to love Choice Market until Gossip Girls and Pratt students took over. Now the service is completely horrific. The workers don't even KNOW what is being service and they look like they've spent more time dressing up than getting to know the menu. I will only walk into Choice if there is no line - because 99% of the time they get my order wrong and it's horrible to fight a million hungry parent-funded art students. Food was ok. I didn't feel their cooked food menu was that great. The flavors and textures didn't seem to blend well. E.g. hearty meats with delicate breads etc. In addition, service here is horrible. Expect to wait at least an hour for your order to arrive, no matter how much you ask for your food. A lot of the staff members also have a bit of an attitude problem. So watch out for that. Beware of anything custom made. They don't seem to care and there's a good chance they'll screw it up. If you really need to get something here, I would recommend the pastries as they were good and inspirational and didn't require a long wait. read more

A friend said they heard they have the best Blt in the city and well, i love bacon! So we made the treck out to try it for ourselves..... It delivered! Everything from the bacon itself to the bread they use to the Rosemary mayo (amazing!) hit the spot big time. Plenty of other items on the menu that i would love to go back and try as well...... I've been going to choice for years! It certainly had never failed my expectations when it came to the food. I LOVE their paninis and burgers. It is kind of expensive, however the food is worth it, you'd definitely be full from their servings. The dishes that are premade at the front, i usually don't order them since they are EXTREMELY expensive in my opinion, but the occasional hanger steak really solves my cravings. As for the C in the health inspection, i don't think i'd really mind it too much, since i do see them cleaning and making fresh food by 4-5am. Main Reason I came here was because I watch Food Network last night and if Ted Allen ventures all the way to Brooklyn for the BLT and it's so called "the perfectly balanced BLT" he has ever eaten then Heck it's on my to do list! If the rating was based just on the BLT-- You would be seeing 10 stars ( and I hate tomatoes-- so that says ALOT) Layer by Layer everything was amazing from the bread to the bacon. The bread was super crispy and not in any way soggy like most sandwiches can get once mayo is added. But it wasn't just any regular mayo it was the kind that had rosemary in it and were my taste-buds dancing with joy. The lettuce also had a crunchy kick to it and the healthy aspect when you see all the bacon that was loaded into the sandwich but no overload. The tomatoes were out of this world and once again that says a lot because I hate tomatoes and I am also slightly allergic to them ( of course no epipen was used during this food tasting-- and i'm not highly allergic so it's fine) The tomatoes gave it this sharp tart taste that just flowed perfectly with the bacon that came next. Bacon-- This food element gets its own description. I need to know how they make this bacon I have never had bacon that tasted this PHENOMENAL! There was no extra grease coming from the bacon, it wasn't over or under cooked, they didn't pat the grease out with paper this i know for sure because when you do that the bacon becomes soggy, The bacon was crispy, flaky and none of the chewy fat that strings one you take a bite. The bacon itself was a masterpiece. Overall the BLT tied in together perfectly-- It had just the right amount of bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It really was the perfect sandwich primarily for the taste but also because nothing slide out when you bite into it and that my friends is a hard concept to master but Choice Market did it and high- five for that! No one wants to be picking up the inside of there sandwich from the paper/plate. Space: Small and Cozy-- I think I was lucky and hit it on a slow morning but I can see it getting packed real quick as I was leaving The reason I took 2 stars off: The service was not great at all, no one is smiling and no good morning or screw you-- no emotional behavior at all and that is very disappointing especially working in the service industry. I felt a little belittled by the staff and that didn't stay well with me-- But I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that I could be due to a bad day. The wait time is also strangely long and that's a bit concerning since there wasn't a lot of people so I can't imagine it when it's packed. Would I go back? Of course-- and Hopefully the service will be better and if that will be the case I will add on the 2 stars and give it a perfect 5! read more

The best thing about this place is not: the luscious freshly baked cakes, the light and fluffy pastries, the freshly ground coffee, the to die for lunches or even the fact that it opens (when a bakery is meant to) at 6am....nope. The best thing about this place are the bad ass Brooklyn lbj's (little brown jobbies- birds) that bathe in the dogs water bowl and saunter over, TWEET TWEET TWEETING their demand for their share of your spoils. If you like savoury food you must try the Ham Croissant (basically a Croque Monsieur) which is the best one I have ever had. Their chocolate cheesecake brownie is amazing and their cupcakes are off the chart good. Basically I love this place and have started coming at least once a week on a Saturday or Sunday morning. read more

One of my favorite places to get a sandwich. They have amazing panini's. The consistency is very high. Every time I go I am not greatly pleased. This is one of the few places where the consistency could not be any better. I am mainly speaking of their paninis. They have a nice selection of great baked goods which are good but the 5 stars are for the sandwiches. I recomend the chicken. I was going to eat there but I ended up hauling ass back home as soon as my order was ready because I wanted to breathe again. On another note, nothing here is vegan as far as I could tell. I ended up getting a veggie burger and even that wound up having cheese on it--a not-very-pleasant surprise for me. (In their defense, the chalkboard menu did say that the veggie burger had cheese on it, but it was kinda scrawled in this itty bitty handwriting and I thought it was part of the description for another item on the menu. Oops, I was wrong.) So, in summary, this place was fine, I guess, but I surely wouldn't go out of my way for anything they have to offer. read more

The only reason I'm writing this negative review is that I hope someone at Choice reads this and realizes that this place is usually so god. I come to this place often because I live in the neighborhood but had a really bad experience there last Sunday afternoon and probably won't ever go back. I waited in the long line, which is normal and I usually don't mind except when I got up to the front there were about 4 people behind the counter and nobody acknowledged me for a good few minutes. They were joking around with each other and figuring out food orders. When someone finally made eye contact with me, without saying hello mind you, I asked for a drink. She then said that their milk machine was down. Disappointed, I settled on the hot cider since that didn't require the machine to heat up. The girl who went to fetch the cider took forever and then forgot about me! I honestly usually love this place. The older French guy who I mostly see working behind the counter is SO GREAT and helpful and friendly. These new younger people are awful. I used to love choice market when I first moved to New York but it is going downhill. Their mac and cheese is inconsistent, sometimes having too much sauce, too little sauce, sometimes flavorless and sometimes there's blue cheese in it - the grubhub does not say there is blue cheese in it. And I like blue cheese but this was gross. If you order any type of sandwich it's soggy for delivery. But their desserts are tasty. read more

I've lived in the area for almost two years, and have been patronizing Choice since I arrived. At first I was an intense advocate, but as time has passed my heart has continually sunk with every visit, and today was no exception. Even though there were three counter workers, including a trainee, a fully staffed kitchen, and an almost empty cafe, it took twenty minutes to make a simple sandwich, one that was, to put it mildly, lackluster to its core. Perhaps the main reason the service was so poor today was the fact that the entire staff seemed to be high, they were moving that slow - one gentleman stood in the back on his phone, the chef continually fucked with his ipod trying to find the perfect Bob Marley song (I did mention they seemed high, right?), and the two young women moved as if they were wading through molasses. I also have to say that the owners' ability to reinforce every pathetic stereotype about the rude Frenchman is both heartbreaking and hilarious. I really can't help but long for some serious competition so that Choice will get the serious kick in the ass it's in desperate need of these days. The one upshot is that the potato salad remains rather tasty, so at least they have that going for them. read more

Staff is friendly and the environment is good but the food was bland and unimpressive. I ordered the pulled pork hash and found it completely lacking flavor or seasoning. The chocolate almond croissant wasn't great either, and the hot mocha didn't have any chocolate flavor at all. Ended up not liking anything I ordered unfortunately. This was the first meal I ate upon arriving in New York City. I had the mozzarella panini with fresh tomato and basil and it was scrumptious. Definitely recommended. The place is small and the only seating is a large table surrounded by some chairs, so you'll end up sitting with random strangers. My boyfriend and I just barely beat the lunch rush and we managed to get two seats next to each other. All of the pastries looked very, very good as well. I've only recently started frequenting this spot, but I like it plenty. It's great for breakfast food when you don't want to resort to the more questionable, less healthy options at, say, your average bagel place or diner (not knocking diners!). The food is fresh, well-prepared, and (I believe) mostly locally-sourced and organic. The portions are great, and the price is reasonable for what you get. They give you greens with your eggs. Into it. They have a good selection of teas (both hot and iced); I haven't tried their coffee, but it seems like a cheap spot to get your fix. I saw the words "banana smoothie" written on their chalk board one day, but I missed my chance. Regrets. I work nights, and I like coming here for my post-work meal when my night drags on particularly long. When it first opens, Choice Market is a nice, quiet place to sit with a paper or laptop. Naturally, the pace picks up as they day begins, and that's when the service might slip a little. In my half dozen or so times here in the past month, the only time I had a service issue was when it was a little busier, around 7:30. The food they gave me was completely different from what I ordered. To be fair, I didn't say anything, and had I brought it up, I'm sure they would have fixed the situation. It was still delicious for the most part. I'll give them a mulligan on this one. There's also an excellent looking array of pastries and plenty of sandwiches on the menu. I'd pop this up to five if buying food hear wasn't so financially painful. This place has amazingly delicious everything. Turkey burger? Get out of town.. we're talking legitimate amazingness in your mouth. A $2 large coffee seems market, that I can handle on my way to work/class, but the $9 panini that is oh so delicious and would make me feel better if I only forked over $7... that'll keep me from eating here too much. Lots of variety - soups, salads, coffee, pastries, and drinks! The lemon ginger muffin was very home-made. Simple, key ingredients. Definitely saw the fiber strands of the ginger. Wish there was more lemon flavor in it. Was not overly sweet at all and not as dense as store-bought muffins. My friend got a mocha and it had a very nice, strong, smooth coffee flavor. Wish the drink was hotter in temperature though. Would definitely come back to try the food! $10 minimum on cards so bring cash if you're grabbing something quick! read more

The pastries are awesome. Cakes are great. The sandwiches are, for the most part, fairly good. The service though, blows dogs for quarters. I live only a few blocks away, and while sometimes I think i can tolerate the stressful situation that is ordering from here, most days I don't bother. Being that it's located on Pratt's campus, there are ALWAYS kids in here, and usually a ridiculous line. Don't even think about going on a sunday morn, cuz then you have the church-going, pushy broads as well. Part of my issue is: the place is simply too small. Especially in the winter. You wait in line, order and pay for your food (or wait to pay, and simply order), and then you're waiting in this tiny, cramped space for them to call your name. If it's nice out, you can go outside and TRY to find a bench seat and check back in a few minutes, but in the winter, you're just standing there, in the way. There's never anywhere to sit, and you're usually pushed up against the pastry glass, waiting to hear your name. Even when i do go in, and there's less of a line, it always takes a minimum of 20 minutes to get my food. For all the people they have working behind the counter, and the limited table space, that is RIDICULOUS! It's a cafe environment, not a restaurant. Part of the problem is the employees. They are all attentive and trying their best, but they're all trying to do everything at once. Management needs to assign them each a job, and make them stick to it!! There are people making coffee, taking orders, AND calling out names. It makes everything that much more ridiculous. And several times, there have been other orders placed by people with the same name as me, and I've gotten their food. Love the food here, but for the love of god, PLEASE EXPAND and train your employees better!! read more

I love this place. I used to look forward to coming here all day when I worked as a dog walker. I dreamed of the baked goods...especially the ones with cheese in them, which happen to be discounted at the end of the day.
