I haven't been here in a while, but I think I remember why. I stopped in for a late lunch for takeout and there was no one else in the restaurant so I felt bad for the cashier and left him an extra five dollars on the bill which came up to $35 a small cup of soup cost $14 and a side of Yucca fries cost $12. I'm more understanding on the fries because it came with a small cup of cheese sauce, but the soup is ridiculously small for $14. I feel ripped off. I asked them when I ordered since the soup was $14. Is it a full portion? It is a cup of soup not a bowl. I'm very upset by this. I've never paid that much for such a small bowl of soup their food prices and especially their lunchtime prices it's probably why I was the only person in there. It is such a shame I like Peruvian food. I guess I will go to the other places in Virginia Beach from now on. read more

Omg DIVINE. Peruvian food has so much flavors! Like the essence of some Peruvian food is fusion and geez they perfected it. Cholo's is in Lynnhaven- and a wonderful hidden gem. The staff are nice and chill and the vibes are quaint. Got the sampler which is a smorgasbord of potato. Perhaps, I was expecting too much. While I am not Peruvian, I have visited the country, and Peruvian cuisine has been my go-to cuisine for at least 10 years. Although I'm not an expert in all things Peruvian, I hope that I have a decent handle on what to expect at a Peruvian restaurant. First, the service was great for what it was because I think our waitress might have been a bit overwhelmed. During over visit, the restaurant was pretty packed, but I think she was the only waitress handling the entire restaurant. That said, she did display great poise while being pulled to and from everywhere. Overall, the food was fine, but I found some of our dishes to be a bit bland . . . compared to what I have had in the past. Generally speaking, the dishes tasted like someone forgot to add seasoning to them. While the cooked food was a bit bland for our liking, the ceviche was pretty darn delicious. Looking back, we probably should have ordered several of ceviche dishes instead of the saltado. The price of the food seemed more or less ok based on my previous experiences with Peruvian food. read more

We came in for an early dinner. When we walked in the tables was dirty and food on the floor. They told us to seat ourselves and as we were walking around the establishment looking for a clean table to sit, we were about to walk out when the cashier/ waitress/ hostess decided to call us back and cleaned a table and swept the floor. The parihuela had fish, and a bit of small shell fish and the taste was not of a parihuela. Moreover, I would clasafy this place as a Hispanic eatery and not a Peruvian restaurant. I asked for part of the soup to go and was given a container to pour my own soup. While doing so the waitres handed me a bigger spoon and I heard a staff member laugh. Total price was $45.92 tax included and a chicha morada as well. I tipped $5.00 cash becauseI I don't know if handing over a to go container is the way to go in this area. I wish I could give Cholo's 100 stars. This may be my husband and I's favorite place in Hampton Roads. Amazing, authentic Peruvian food. At first glance, you may be underwhelmed driving by, but go inside, order a Pisco, and I promise you won't be disappointed. Their Piscos are STRONG and FOAMY - two of my favorite cocktail attributes The service is always excellent - the staff are efficient and kind. I appreciate them because they don't hover, but are very attentive. No matter how crowded the restaurant is, we always get our food within 10-15 minutes. Definitely start with the ceviche or yucca for an appetizer. Their ceviche has one of the best lime sauce/spice mixture of any ceviche I've had. It comes with the authentic, Peruvian corn and sweet potatoes. For main dishes, we love Lomo Saltado, Pescado a lo Macho, and Arroz con Mariscos. But I'm POSITIVE, you cannot order wrong here! The inside is simple and only has maybe ten tables or so. We almost always dine in though because we love our food hot and fresh! We decided to come with the family after spending all morning and early afternoon at the beach. We were craving Peruvian food so we found this place on Yelp with very decent reviews. Often times we are very disappointed at the Peruvian restaurants we find but we were positively surprised by the quality of the food and the good flavor. It was not perfect tor amazing but compared to the average Peruvian restaurants you find it was above average. Peaking at the kitchen the cooks appear to be Peruvian so that makes a big difference. We ordered the appetizer sampler ( papa rellena, papa a la huancaina and the causa ) and they were all good... maybe the huancaina could have had a bit more spice but not a big deal. Then we ordered the arroz con pollo, it was tasty and didn't disappoint. Then we ordered the seco de carne with frijoles.... It was good but in my opinion the meat needed to be a bit softer, so either a different cut of meat or cook it longer ( that is just my advice for the cook :) ). Then we ordered the pescado a lo macho and it was excellent, creamy and very tasty, we loved it. We also ordered some dessert .... We got the mazamorra/arroz con leche combo ... kids ate them in about 15 secs flat ! They were great. We took some alfajores to go as well and they were soft and fresh. I decided to have lunch before checking out a movie at the AMC Lynnhaven and I decided to try Cholo's since it was nearby. Cholo's is a Peruvian restaurant; I was excited because I don't have much experience with their cuisine. I've been to Imperio Inca in Ghent off of 21st Street, but that closed a long time ago. Since then the only experience I had with Peruvian food was Charcoal Chicken at Loehmann's Plaza in Virginia Beach. Anyways, back to my visit. I was sat quickly and my server kind of leisurely came over with a menu. He took my drink order and left to fetch my drink. I ordered the arroz con mariscos (rice mixed with shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams, served with salsa criolla) since I was in the mood for some seafood with rice. After that, my server left to hang out at a register near the back and went ahead and messed around with his cell phone. Now this is where I have issues, because I realize cell phones are almost essential to function today. But in a work environment cell phone use should be at a minimum. In my opinion, cell phones shouldn't be used when it comes to food service, or at least not used in plain view of customers. That distraction can result in poor service, at least slower service. And guess what, that worry became my reality. My dish was ready and placed in the window not 5 feet from my server. The line cook rang the bell a couple of times but my server didn't respond; face buried in his cell phone. The cook rang the bell again; still nothing. Five minutes had passed before my server bothered to look up from his phone. The cook rang the bell as often as he could but he had to prepare other customers' dishes. I watched whole thing unfold to the point where I wanted to yell, "Dude, can you bring me my food that's been sitting in the window for 5 minutes??!!?!?!?" I remained silent and let "cellphoneserver" do his thing. After he finally brought my entrée over I have to admit it was good. But the fact I witnessed an employee simply ditch his duties for whatever he was doing on his cell bothered me. Anyways, Cholo has some good food but I wasn't happy with the service. I ordered my food and had it delivered. I found that the Pollo a la Brasa is amazing! Tender, seasoned well, full of flavor. The whole chicken is abit pricey but worth it, it comes with steak fries, and there is a half chicken option with steak fries that is cheaper! The Salsa Amarillo is tasty also! I tried the Jalea Mixta (fried seafood combo) and the fried calamari, it was fried wayyyy to hard! (See photo) it was unchewable! This is my second try at ordering something that they have that is fried and I won't order hose two things again! When my office relocated to the Lynnhaven area I was excited about all of the new lunch options available and vowed to expand my dining options. Unfortunately within two months my waistline was the only thing expanding This restaurant was recommended by a co-worker so I decided to give it a try! I'd give this place 10 stars if I could!!!!! Within minutes my food arrived - so fast I couldn't check in via Yelp to start my review in real time but now almost 17 hours later I'm still thinking about that lunch. )The true measure of a good meal). Now back to the food the chicken was so tender, every bite better than the last. My entree came with two distinctive sauces (I apologize for not being able to call them by name but oh so good) I definitely plan on returning and will ask next time. I lived in DC for 8 years before moving back to the area, and had become quite addicted to Peruvian chicken while I was there. I tried nearly every Peruvian restaurant there was to try in the DMV area, so I was naturally very sad because I didn't think I'd be able to get that same experience when I moved here. Well Cholo's comes close! I found and tried two other Peruvian restaurants in area, and Cholo's came out on top. To be clear, I am referring specifically to the chicken, yuca, and rice. This is by far the closest experience I can find to what I'm used to in the DMV. I was looking for a place to dine where I had not been before and no one had referred me to. My first Peruvian restaurant experience was in Maryland and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I saw Chulo's and decided to give it a try after reading Yelp reviews. I had the Arroz con Pollo and Maduros (fried plantains). The chicken was delicious. It was so tender and flavorful. It was severed with a green sauce that had a bit of heat to it (not too much, but I do like spicy food), lettuce, tomato, and onions. The onions tasted as if they were lightly pickled or had a little rice wine vinegar on them. The Maduras were sweet, soft and crispy on the ends just like I like them. Great Peruvian restaurant in the area. The Virginia Beach area doesn't seem to have a ton of destinations to get Peruvian chicken. As this seems to be a fairly new restaurant, it adds variation and flavor to the once boring Sports Authority shopping center. The food is excellent and the food comes out fast. Their chicken has great flavor. I would also recommend their passion fruit juice. I would come again whenever I'm around Lynnhaven mall. read more
