After being sick for a week, I was looking forward to eating something other than soup and decided to visit Charcoal Chicken in Loehmann's Plaza. I hadn't eaten there in over five years, so I was hoping the food was still as good as I remembered. My visit was on a Friday evening, around 6:00 or 6:30 PM. The dining room was relatively quiet, with only two other customers present, and I was immediately greeted upon walking in. I asked the cashier about the new menu item, the "Lamb Chops." He described them as pan-fried, noting that an order includes two to three nice-sized chops and comes with two sides. I decided to order the lamb chops to go, selecting the arroz chaufa (fried rice) which was a $1 upcharge and plantains as my sides. I was extremely disappointed when I opened my order and found that I had been served lamb shoulder for $18 and not the lamb chops I expected (typically rib or loin chops). To add to my disappointment the quality of the Lamb was very poor; it was tough, contained an excessive amount of connective tissue and fat, and was ultimately inedible. I ended up having to throw the entire portion away. The arroz chaufa also had inconsistent quality. While the flavor was good, the texture varied significantly, with parts being mushy and overcooked, and others remaining hard and undercooked. The Plantains were cut too thick and were also undercooked. Given the cost and the expectation associated with "Lamb Chops," I was extremely unhappy with my meal. I believe the cut of meat served was misrepresented, falsely advertised and the quality was unacceptable. I certainly cannot recommend this item to others and regret not ordering the chicken, which I know your restaurant prepares well. read more

Best Peruvian chicken in the area!! We've tried other Peruvian chicken spots in the past around this area but they didn't cut it. This restaurant hit the spot and is so good. The chicken is flavorful and moist paired with the sauces is chefs kiss. The prices are really good too. We got the whole chicken special for $35 and it comes with the sides an a 2ltr soda. It was plenty for my family and we even had leftovers. The staff is friendly and the restaurant had plenty of tables so you can sit down and enjoy your food but we opted for take out and ate at home. We will be back and I want to try the other items on their menu too. Be sure to give this place a try, you won't be disappointed! read more

I love Horchata, Charcoal chicken make Horchata. Yucca frites, fresh cooked. I eat half before I get home. Black beans are well seasoned. Charcoal chicken is nicely marinated. Always a friendly greeting when you enter by staff and the open Charcoal rotisserie in front of your face. I love the authentic drinks and recipes there's guys replicate. I stopped by Charcoal Chicken about 30 mins before they closed and quickly ordered a 1/4 Chicken Combo with Fried Rice and Plantains! The aroma of the food cooking made my mouth water before the food was even served, it smelled phenomenal. Thankfully, it only took about 10 mins for my food to be ready and since I was super excited to try it, I decided to dine in. I was thoroughly impressed with the flavors of the food! The chicken was seasoned, tender and juicy and every bite was divine! The fried rice was absolutely delicious and I loved that there was chicken added to it as well. Hands down, some of the best fried rice I've ever had! The plantains were cooked perfectly and were just as great! I literally wanted to return the next day, it was just that good! Charcoal chicken is a nice healthy alternative to fast food when you want quick and on the go. You will find them in the Walmart shopping center off of South Lynnhaven, VB. They have a wide selection of food to choose from, from like Peruvian chicken, burritos, tacos, plantains, steak, rice n beans, French fries, Philly cheesesteak and more! Basically, something for everyone! The sides are all cooked so you can pick which sides you want with your meal. They are in their grand opening and the staff done a wonderful job with moving the lines along and answering questions sufficiently. So for the food. I got the 1/4 chicken rotisserie chicken with 2 sides. It came with a cilantro sauce too that was delicious, a little spicy but that's how I like it! The chicken was tender and flavorful. The fried rice side I got with it was tasty too. Wasn't greasy or salty. The black beans also were seasoned good. I can't wait to try the Mexican grill dishes. Yum! First time here and loved it all! Service: It's an order at the counter kind of place and the woman behind the counter was helpful and patient with us. She gave great suggestions on what to order and it was all great! Food: We ended up with the following, 1/2 chicken with pinto beans and the fried rice, and a chicken sandwich with fried plantains. All was delicious and would order it all again, and can't wait to order it all again. Also got the special punch drink and it was just as delicious too! The green sauce has a kick and the yellow sauce is also good! Ambiance: It's not overly large about 8 tables but love that they have an area to grab plates/silverware/napkins if you are eating in or even taking your food to-go and need those items. Cons: Ordered an extra yellow sauce and didn't receive it as well as one of the green sauces. Not a biggie, we will just make sure to check the bag before leaving. Looking for Peruvian grilled chicken and we found ourselves here. This area has a selection of Asian restaurant which I'm happy to find here in Virginia Beach. The place looks small but inside you have a good enough dining area. It's clean and well lighted. You come in and the great smell of grilled chicken permeates. There were the nice gentlemen dishing the orders. They were quick and efficient in taking our orders which they were fast to give too. So because we did take out. We were there in and out. A delight when you are in a hurry. The chicken is warm, moist and so delicious. Really what we were looking for. The black beans, the fried plantain and the fried rice was so good. Walked in. Saw a few people sitting around a few tables. This place isn't a get dressed up fancy place. I wanted a simple meal. Nothing fancy and it hit the spot. Chicken was good! Nice flavor. Breast was a little dry but that's white meat for ya. Don't fear- they have 2 dipping sauces for you. The green one is spicy but I liked it. The yellow one- it'll rock your world so don't stress about the white meat. I went with the lentils and I loved them. Lots on the menu other then the chicken. Delivery was fast and efficient and the dash driver was nice and friendly. The food was a bit spicy but delish, rice on point but the only down side was the portion, sweet plantains soft and tasty and fries amazing. Had this spot booked marked forever. I would say 3.5 stars & am rounding up. I came, I discovered, & I asked, "what's in the yellow sauce?" Their response, "We don't know. It's just made and given to us." The sauces were delicious and much needed for my chicken. It was lunch time so not sure why the chicken would be dry. I thoroughly enjoyed the salad and yucca fries. It was absolutely delicious; I even ate each one of the purple onions it came with because it tasted like lime juice. I can eat that every day! Charcoal Chicken is actually true to its name as the inside of the restaurant smells like a summer outdoor charcoal bbq! Whether they use actual charcoal to grill their chicken is still unclear but it sure does smell the part. It's located in a strip mall near Town Center in Va. Beach near a more known competitor, Nandos. The Peruvian grilled chicken is the star of the show although they offer other options such as chicken wings and lomo saltado. It's a locally owned business which is always a plus! I placed a call in order as it is highly suggested since they grill your chicken to order. I still had to wait even as I got there but it was not an issue. I ordered a 1/2 chicken with salad and fried rice. It came with their two house red and green sauces and I ordered extra of each for a little extra. The 1/2 chicken was super juicy and flavorful with their unique seasoning! It had a very distinct charcoal smell and taste which made it even better. The red and green sauces complimented the chicken nicely. However, the fried rice was forgettable and the salad wasn't the best. It was mainly just greens with no dressing provided. The sides I got were disappointing but the chicken still made my meal worthwhile. The chicken is truly the best option here and maybe I'll try different sides. First time here and we ordered takeout, whole chicken with 2 sides. Went with the plantain and yuca as sides because those usually aren't readily available at most restaurants. Size of the the side dishes were good for the price. The whole chicken only comes with 4 tiny cups of sauce. The chicken tasted good but not much about was Peruvian chicken. I'm northern Virginia there are lots of Peruvian chicken restaurants and they are excellent but this didn't have that classic Peruvian taste. The sauce amount was lacking because I rely on the green sauce for a more authentic flavor. All in all good! read more

Wow, they actually care about my feedback. I was very impressed the owner and Chris reached out to me to formally apologize and acknowledge their mistake. They even allowed me to order anything on the menu and would have it personally delivered by Chris. I changed my decision on trying the meal I had last time, so I ordered the whole chicken and two large sides (plantains and fried rice). And most importantly, the green and yellow sauce. Here is my takeaway from all this: The owners understand their customers and will go above and beyond to redeem themselves to make us happy. I was tired of burgers and hand held foods, so we stopped by Charcoal Chicken in Loehmann's Plaza . When we walked in there were about 4 or 5 tables filled with people eating. The gentlemen looked a little busy so he wasn't able to greet us right away. When it was out turn we were greeted and we ordered C4 which was chicken and rice with tomatoes and onions, and it came with green and yellow sauces. It cost about $15 for everything. We waited for the food and looked around. Its a cute little restaurant where you help yourself to condiments and napkins. The owner seems nice and it was clean inside. I couldn't wait to try it. It smelled good so i tried it in the parking lot.. The chicken was good, not to dry. I got the white meat. The rice was ok but some was soft some was clumped together. But it tasted ok. I liked the onions and tomato. I also enjoyed the sauce. The green one is almost spicy. I mean close to it, but not really. Still good but i liked the yellow sauce best. It was slightly sweet. It definitely helped the chicken out. Its $.25 per addtl. sauce but I'd recommend getting extra, especially if your a sauce boss!! I had to get 2 extra of each sauce. You get 1 of each with the meal. My husband liked his meal. 1/2 chicken and sides. I didn't like the nachos though. The flavor wasn't terrible, but it was like cheese soup with chicken over chips. Kinda greasy and gross. I would try the restaurant again, just not the nachos. read more

The food was awful. The chicken was overcooked and dry. So was the fried rice. This was our first time and it will be the last.

Alex was a really nice person. The food was ok. Although it took some time, the wait was definitely not worth it because everything was bland and not as tasty. Moreover, everything was reasonably priced. If you love spicy food, the ceviche was definitely overly spicy. Personally, I am not a fan of the Pisco sour, but the food was good. If you are in town with your family, this would be a great spot to go to because there is nothing in VA beach strip that's good. read more
